Doris Houston, 93

WELLS - Doris (Bryant) Houston, 93, a resident of Post Road, Wells died March 26, 2003 at the Monarch Center of Saco after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Kennebunkport on Sept. 9, 1909, a daughter of John I. and Rowena (Clough) Bryant and attended Kennebunkport schools.

She and her late husband ran the Vegetable Stand on the Route 1 for several years and opened the Pine Tree Gardens Gift Shop in 1928, which they owned and operated for more than 41 years.

She was a member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church and Priscilla Chapter Order of the Eastern Star of Wells.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers and spending time with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Houston who died in 1988 and her three brothers, William, Wilbur and Donald Bryant and a sister Sarah Avery.

She is survived by one son, John C. Houston of East Sandwich, Mass.; one daughter, Joyce O. Holmes of East Falmouth, Mass.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

A funeral was held Monday at the Chapel at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells with the Rev. David Clark officiating. Burial was in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

Richard Wirling Sr., 88

ARUNDEL - Richard A. Wirling Sr., 88, departed this world for his eternal home the morning of March 26, 2003 at the York Hospital, two days before his 89th birthday. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Donna, of almost 30 years; they were to celebrate their 30th on Aug. 25.

He was born in Beverly, Mass., on March 28, 1914, the son of Arthur and Beatrice (Hogan) Wirling. He graduated from Beverly High School in 1932 and from Northeastern University in 1937 with a B.S. in engineering. He served his country in World War II as a special operative for the Treasury Department. He also was the owner of several small businesses and real estate development projects in and around Beverly. He worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as a principal highway engineer for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1977. After retirement he moved to Maine and with his wife Donna operated a small family farm, home-schooling their three children.

He enjoyed sailing, camping, building houses and furniture, farming and gardening. He continued gardening and building even in his last years. He worshipped in the Roman Catholic faith, and his strong faith and enduring prayerfullness were an inspiration to all who knew him. He was universally regarded as the patriarch of the Wirling family, and his ability to recollect and colorfully retell many stories from his life was a source of great enjoyment for his family who feel his loss tremendously.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia (Carlton) Wirling, two daughters, Louise Maggiacomo and Holly Wirling, and his granddaughter, Cynthia Maggiacomo.

Surviving sons and their spouses are Richard C. and Mary Wirling of Beverly, Mass., Lawrence and Charlene Wirling of Peabody, Mass., and Richard A. Jr. and Bernice Wirling of Germantown, Tenn.; daughters and their spouses are Pamela and James Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Wendy and John Morrison of Brookings, S.D.; 12 grandchildren, Mark, Michael, Scott, Kelly, Ryan, Kevin, Gareth, Jonathan, Grace, Abigail, Fiona, and Bronwyn; and two great-grandchildren, Justin and Thia.

At his request there were no funeral services held. A private graveside committal service was held at the North Beverly cemetery on Saturday.

Donations in his memory may be made to the March of Dimes or the American Cancer Society.

Edward Adams, 93

KENNEBUNK - Edward G. Adams, 93, of 18 Park St., Kennebunk died May 23, 2003.

Born in Roslindale, Mass., in 1910, he graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, Vt., and attended Boston University.

He worked in the industrial advertising business where he was employed by advertising agencies in New York, Cleveland and Hartford. Later he went into the agency business in Hartford, Conn., where he was vice president of Peck-Adams Inc., and president of Ted Adams Inc., in Windsor Locks and Glastonbury, Conn.

He and his wife, Helen L. Adams, lived in Glastonbury, Conn. for 27 years. During that period he served on the Glastonbury Historic District; he was vice president of the Hartford String Orchestra; he handled public relations for the West Hartford School of Music; and was president of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony in New London, Conn. in 1957. While in Hartford, his agency handled public relations for the Connecticut State Library.

He retired in 1985 and moved to Kennebunk. Since then he has been active in volunteer activities at Southern Maine Medical Center, the Kennebunk Free Library, and the Meals-On-Wheels program. He served on the board of directors at the Kennebunk Free Library and was a member of the building committee for the new library in 1995.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Helen L. Adams of Kennebunk; one son, Edward Gary Adams of Manchester, Conn.; two daughters, Beverly E. Fitzgibbons of Allentown, Pa. and Cynthia Emmons of Saco; one stepson, David L. Yoder of Glastonbury, Conn.; one stepdaughter, Anne L. Niles of Old Saybrook, Conn.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Norma Adams of So. Hadley, Mass., Betty Miller of Chelsea, Mich. and Jean Palmer of Lakeland, Fla.

A memorial service will be held in Shirley, Mass., at a later date.

Alan Edmond, 49

KENNEBUNK - Alan S. Edmond. 49, of Settlers Way, Kennebunk, died May 25, 2003 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, with his family at his side.

He was born in Framingham, Mass. on Oct. 8, 1953, the son of Hubert and Edith (Anderson) Edmond. He attended Framingham schools and graduated in 1972 from Framingham South High School. He was a standout basketball player, having his No. 4 jersey retired at the end of his high school career. He attended Assumption College in Worcester, Mass. as a scholarship basketball player and graduated in 1976 with a degree in mathematics. It was there he met his wife, Barbara Taylor, and they were married on June 25, 1977.

He taught mathematics for a number of years at Hingham High School. He then became an industrial engineer first for J.F. McElwain Company, a shoe manufacturer, in Nashua, N.H. and then for Health-tex, manufacturer of children's clothes in Central Falls. R.I. It is with Health-tex that he first moved to Maine in 1982, residing in Topsham, and became production manager for DAVOL in Cranston, R.I., he returned to Maine in 1989, where he held supervision roles for CYRO Industries in Sanford and LL Bean Manufacturing in Brunswick.

For the past five years, he has worked in inventory control at INCON in Saco.

His favorite place in the world was the family summer camp on the shores of Lake St. George in Liberty, Maine where he spent many hours fishing and canoeing. He was an avid exerciser, enjoying running, walking and of late his recumbent bike, in addition to following his children in their sports careers.

Often referred to as "Big Al" because of his large 6-foot 6-inch stature, he was a loving husband, super dad and playful brother and uncle. He would often be found surrounded on the living room floor by a pile of kids - wrestling, tickling and making laughter abound. The family are parishioners at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk.

Surviving are his mother and father of Westboro, Mass.; his wife of 26 years, Barbara, and two children, Scott and Meagan Edmond of Kennebunk and one sister, Patricia Edmond Rogers of Westboro, Mass.

Friends may call at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Martha Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk with the Rev. Laurent Laplante and Paul Coughlin officiating the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made "In memory of Alan Edmond" to the United Way of York County Endowment Fund, PO Box 727, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Leota Foss, 93

KENNEBUNK - Leota E. Foss, 93, died May 25, 2003 at the Southridge Living Center in Biddeford after a lengthy illness. She was a former resident of Kennebunk and Sanford.

She was the widow of Linwood Foss who died in 1972.

She was born in Westbrook Oct. 27, 1909, a daughter of Alvin and Martha (Murray) Barbour. She attended Westbrook schools. A former resident of Sanford, she moved to Kennebunk in the early 1980s.

She was predeceased by her husband, a son, Charles Foss and his wife Joyce and a grandson, Charles Foss, a granddaughter, Denise F. Bryant, one brother, Richard Barbour and a sister, Laura Damon.

Surviving are one granddaughter, Rhonda-Jo Foss of Arundel; four great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Wednesday at the family lot in Oakdale Cemetery, Sanford.

David Hilton, 42

YORK - David N. Hilton, 42, of Camden Avenue, husband of Diane C. (Treamer) Hilton died May 24, 2003 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H.

He was born in York, Nov. 17, 1960, son of Alva A. and Janet H. (Hutchins) Hilton and graduated from York High School.

He owned and operated a business, along with his wife, Diane, DNH Collectibles, selling old bottles, postcards and ephemera, and was very knowledgeable about old bottles and their value.

He was responsible for getting fire towers in the area operational and staffed by volunteers after they were closed by the state. He spent many hours manning the tower on the summit of Mt. Agamenticus in dry times, in order to detect fires. This was a service he performed which was very dear to his heart.

He was the author of a book titled "From York to the Allagash-Forest Fire Lookouts of Maine."

He served actively on the York Fire Department from 1979 to 2003. He served as firefighter, lieutenant, and driver (or as he would say "Motor Pump Operator"). He spent many hours volunteering for the fire department, dedicating his time with the rehab, weekly fire log, fire lookout tower, and most known for making sure the second pump got out of the station. His memory and spirit will always be in the Village Fire Station and Engine 4.

He was president and vice president of Southern Maine Fire Notification Association, which he co-founded with a friend, Rick Plummer, which is a volunteer organization notifing citizens of fires and disasters, in order to help those in need.

He was a member of the Cape Neddick Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife of 14 years, Diane C. (Treamer) Hilton of York; one son, Nick D. Hilton of York; one daughter, Lora D. Hilton of York; his parents of Cape Neddick; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Doris Treamer of Berlin, N.H.; sister-in-law, Louise Donato of Berlin, N.H.; several aunts, uncles, cousins and two nieces.

Graveside services were held Wednesday in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the David Hilton Family Relief Fund, c/o Kennebunk Savings Bank, 16 Woodbridge Rd., York, ME 03909 or donations may be left at the York Police Department.

Jacqueline Pucciarelli, 74

WELLS - Jacqueline Pucciarelli, 74, a resident of Flintlock Village, Wells formerly of Medway, Mass. and Newton, Mass., died May 25, 2003 at the York Hospital, York, after a long illness.

She was born in Dorchester, Mass. on Sept. 8, 1928, a daughter of Isadora and Dora (Garber) Moran. She graduated from Newton High School, Newton, Mass.

She was a chef and pastry chef for the Colonial of Medfield, Mass. and Moran's Restaurant of West Newton, Mass. for more than 20 years.

She had an amazing outlook on life. While much of her adult life was filled with pain, she remained an incredibly positive person. She would give the world to make others happy, yet required very little in return. The life lessons she taught us on a daily basis will sorely be missed.

She enjoyed sharing life and love with her family, volunteering and assisting others, cooking, travel and dining, music, movies and theatre.

She is predeceased by her sister Edna Pucciarelli.

She is survived by her husband and constant companion of 53 years, Robert F. Pucciarelli of Wells; three sons, Neal of Cumberland Gap, Tenn., Dana of Valrico, Fla. and Gary of Wells; two daughters, Gail Pucciarelli of Kennebunkport and Tina Pucciarelli Ford of Braintree, Mass.; one sister, Evie Blumethal of Brookline, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Lisa Pucciarelli and Hannah Pucciarelli.

A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Isabel Skinner, 86

KENNEBUNK - Isabel May Skinner, 86, of Old Port Road, died on May 22, 2003 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1916, in Kennebunkport, a daughter of Raymond E. and Mary B. Welch. She was raised in Kennebunk and was a graduate of Kennebunk High School.

On June 6, 1938, she married Melvin F. Skinner. He predeceased her in 1989.

She lived in Greenfield, Mass. for 18 years, Concord, N.H. for two years and Moorestown, N.J. for 18 years. She returned to Maine in 1975.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed refinishing antique furniture. She wrote her own poetry, painted, taught rug braiding and was involved with genealogy and was able to trace both sides of her family's history.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond W. and Ernest L. Welch; and three sisters, Beatrice E. and Ruth M. Cole, and Rosamond E. Welch.

She is survived by four sons, David W. Skinner of So. Berwick, Robert O. Skinner of Tabernacle, N.J., Donald P. Skinner of Morrestown, N.J., and Richard M. Skinner of Fort Atkinson, Wisc.; one daughter, Jean M. Skinner of Kennebunk; four brothers, Cliffors S. Welch of Kennebunk, Leslie I. And William J. Welch both of Arundel and James S. Welch of Kennebunk; one sister, Frances A. Grace of Kennebunk; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; 28 nieces and nephews; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, at St. Martha Church, Route 1, Kennebunk. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association, ME Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.

Betty Wentworth, 82

FREEPORT - Betty (Libby) Wentworth, 82, passed away at her current residence in Cape Neddick on May 12, 2003.

She was born Jan. 29, 1921, a daughter of Hiram and Daisy Libby, in Auburn, where she attended schools as well as schooling at North Yarmouth Academy.

She was an avid beano player, collected dolls, and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as displaying their many pictures. She enjoyed creating many crocheted items for family and friends and of late liked watching old movies and westerns on TV.

She worked as a CNA at the Freeport Nursing Home for several years, was involved in several restaurant operations prior to that time and after retirement she helped out at the Front Desk of her daughter and son-in-law's resort in Ogunquit.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Larue and a son, William Wentworth.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Paul Wentworth of Cape Neddick; two sons, Robert Wentworth and Bruce Wentworth, both of Florida; three daughters, Margaret Bowden of Cape Neddick, Gail Berzinis of Readfield, Pamela Ferland and son-in-law, Donald Ferland of Cape Neddick; daughter-in-law, Takeko Wentworth of Chelsea; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

There will be no funeral services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to York Beach Fire and Rescue Department, PO Box 70, York Beach, ME 03910, for the wonderful rescue services they frequently provided.

Frances Borofsky, 90

OGUNQUIT - Frances Borofsky, 90, of Ogunquit, Maine, and Newton, Mass., passed away on May 19, 2003.

Along with her late husband Sydney, she was a "fixture" in Perkin's Cove, where she sat and painted in her gallery, The Left Bank Gallery, for 32 years. Since the gallery opened in 1970, it has continued to be an annual meeting place for her friends and art lovers alike.

She began her career as an architect. She studied at Girls Latin School in Boston and later received her master's graduate degree in architecture from Smith College in Cambridge. Despite her love for architecture, by the 1950's she began to focus most of her energies on her painting and continued to do so until her death.

She is survived by her one son, Jonathan and his wife, Francine Bisson, as well as by her two sisters, Sophie Horwitz of Weston, Mass., and Anna Hahn of Chestnut Hill, Mass.
