Isabel Skinner, 86

KENNEBUNK - Isabel May Skinner, 86, of Old Port Road, died on May 22, 2003 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1916, in Kennebunkport, a daughter of Raymond E. and Mary B. Welch. She was raised in Kennebunk and was a graduate of Kennebunk High School.

On June 6, 1938, she married Melvin F. Skinner. He predeceased her in 1989.

She lived in Greenfield, Mass. for 18 years, Concord, N.H. for two years and Moorestown, N.J. for 18 years. She returned to Maine in 1975.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed refinishing antique furniture. She wrote her own poetry, painted, taught rug braiding and was involved with genealogy and was able to trace both sides of her family's history.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond W. and Ernest L. Welch; and three sisters, Beatrice E. and Ruth M. Cole, and Rosamond E. Welch.

She is survived by four sons, David W. Skinner of So. Berwick, Robert O. Skinner of Tabernacle, N.J., Donald P. Skinner of Morrestown, N.J., and Richard M. Skinner of Fort Atkinson, Wisc.; one daughter, Jean M. Skinner of Kennebunk; four brothers, Cliffors S. Welch of Kennebunk, Leslie I. And William J. Welch both of Arundel and James S. Welch of Kennebunk; one sister, Frances A. Grace of Kennebunk; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; 28 nieces and nephews; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, at St. Martha Church, Route 1, Kennebunk. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association, ME Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.

Betty Wentworth, 82

FREEPORT - Betty (Libby) Wentworth, 82, passed away at her current residence in Cape Neddick on May 12, 2003.

She was born Jan. 29, 1921, a daughter of Hiram and Daisy Libby, in Auburn, where she attended schools as well as schooling at North Yarmouth Academy.

She was an avid beano player, collected dolls, and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as displaying their many pictures. She enjoyed creating many crocheted items for family and friends and of late liked watching old movies and westerns on TV.

She worked as a CNA at the Freeport Nursing Home for several years, was involved in several restaurant operations prior to that time and after retirement she helped out at the Front Desk of her daughter and son-in-law's resort in Ogunquit.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Larue and a son, William Wentworth.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Paul Wentworth of Cape Neddick; two sons, Robert Wentworth and Bruce Wentworth, both of Florida; three daughters, Margaret Bowden of Cape Neddick, Gail Berzinis of Readfield, Pamela Ferland and son-in-law, Donald Ferland of Cape Neddick; daughter-in-law, Takeko Wentworth of Chelsea; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

There will be no funeral services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to York Beach Fire and Rescue Department, PO Box 70, York Beach, ME 03910, for the wonderful rescue services they frequently provided.

Frances Borofsky, 90

OGUNQUIT - Frances Borofsky, 90, of Ogunquit, Maine, and Newton, Mass., passed away on May 19, 2003.

Along with her late husband Sydney, she was a "fixture" in Perkin's Cove, where she sat and painted in her gallery, The Left Bank Gallery, for 32 years. Since the gallery opened in 1970, it has continued to be an annual meeting place for her friends and art lovers alike.

She began her career as an architect. She studied at Girls Latin School in Boston and later received her master's graduate degree in architecture from Smith College in Cambridge. Despite her love for architecture, by the 1950's she began to focus most of her energies on her painting and continued to do so until her death.

She is survived by her one son, Jonathan and his wife, Francine Bisson, as well as by her two sisters, Sophie Horwitz of Weston, Mass., and Anna Hahn of Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Julius Dean, 79

KENNEBUNK - Julius Matthew Dean, 79, of Carriage Lane, Kennebunk died on May 21, 2003 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was the husband of Rita (Morrisette) Dean.

He was born on March 16, 1924, in Mitchell, Ind., a son of William and Catherine (Kinnett) Dean. He graduated from Jeffersonville High School in Indiana and attended Bloomington College and Boston University in Boston, Mass. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army.

He was employed as a sales rep for Doxsee Food Company of Baltimore while living in Massachusetts. He moved to Maine in 1960 and founded the Julius M. Dean Company serving as its food broker in New England for more than 20 years.

He was a selectman for the town of Kennebunk in 1965, and for 20 years owned the Julius M. Dean Company in Kennebunk. He held membership in the Masonic Lodge in Mitchell, Ind., all Scottish Rite Bodies and the Maine Consistory 32 Degree Valley of Portland, the Kora Shrine of Lewiston, and the York County Shrine Club.

He enjoyed antique automobiles and was the former owner of a 1940 Lasalle Opra Coupe. He was a member of the (MOAL) Maine Obsolete Antique League.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rita M. Dean of Kennebunk; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Masonic Service was held by Arundel Lodge at Saturday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. Burial was in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Cynthia Gordon, 61

KENNEBUNK - Cynthia Jane Gordon, 61, a resident of Brown Street, died May 25, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born July 3, 1941 in Biddeford, a daughter of Raymond and Maybelle (Maddox) Gordon. She attended Kennebunk schools. She was employed by SAD 71 as a custodian for more than 40 years. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Kennebunkport. She enjoyed her church and was an avid reader.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Wesley R. Gordon, and three sisters Beverly Motes, Varrell Kingsbury and Constance Harrison.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with the Rev. Bonnie Steinroeder officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Donald Huff, 80

KENNEBUNK - Donald Huff, 80, of Woodside Drive, died on May 19, 2003 at his residence.

He was born on Jan. 28, 1923, in Cranford, N.J., a son to John S. and Elizabeth Huff. He was a graduate of Cranford High School and also served during World War II in the Army Air Corps.

He was employed as a carpenter.

He is survived by his wife, Grace R. Huff of Kennebunk; two sons, Bradley Huff of Point Pleasant, N.J., and Donald Huff of Baskingridge, N.J.; three daughters, Donna Beth Thompson of Texas, Laura Grasso of Toms River, N.J., and Elizabeth Roney of Northboro, Mass.; one brother, John "Schuyler" Huff of Cranberry, N.J.; his twin sister, Doris Garrity of Jupiter, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at his daughter Laura's residence in Toms River, N.J.

If desired, donations may be made in his memory to the Southern Maine Health and Home Care Services, PO Box 739, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Lois Johnston, 82

CAPE PORPOISE - Lois (Hopkins) Johnston, 82, a resident of Fishers Lane, Cape Porpoise, formerly of York and Englewood, Fla. died May 16, 2003 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.

She was the widow of Dr. James S. Johnston, Md., who died in 1993.

She was born in Beverly, Mass. on Dec. 7, 1920, a daughter of Wendall P. and Olive (Newport) Hopkins. She graduated from Malden High School in 1938. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. and the Academy Moderne in Boston from which she received many professional modeling jobs.

In 1945 she married James S. Johnston and moved to Middletown, Conn. She was employed in banking on Long Island, N.Y. until starting her family of two sons and two daughters. The family then moved to Maine where she continued to be a loving mother and housewife.

She is survived by two sons, Bruce S. Johnston of York Harbor, and Douglas D. Johnston and his wife Toby of Englewood, Fla.: two daughters, Heather J. Wescott of Cape Porpoise, and Sandra J. Brennan and her husband Robert of South Freeport; one brother, Donald Hopkins; two sisters, Shirley Doane and Phyllis Whittaker; five grandchildren, Elliott and Zachary Brennan, Jessica Hutchins and her husband Steve, Devon Jones and Nathan Wescott; and two great-grandchildren, Rhiannon and Lindsey Hutchins.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

Arnold B. Provencher, 87

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Arnold B. Provencher, 87, a resident of Rochester, N.H. formerly of Kennebunkport died May 24, 2003 at the Frisbee Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Manchester, N.H. April 27, 1916, a son of William H. and Alice (Bourque) Provencher. He attended Manchester schools and was employed for more than 16 years as a printer for the Hildreth Press Company in Bristol, Conn. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater.

Following his retirement he lived in Kennebunkport for several years and attended the First Congregational Church. He was an avid baseball fan and his team, the former Boston Braves, now the Atlanta Braves, was the team to cheer for. He also enjoyed cribbage and entered several tournaments.

He is survived by one son, Peter Provencher of Troy, Maine and one daughter, Monique Mailhot of Rochester, N.H.; one brother, Philip Provencher of Barre, Vt.; one sister, Marcella Souza of Fairfield, Maine; three grandchildren, Joseph and Jessica Gooch and Nathaniel Provencher also survive along with several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convience of the family.

Mary Jane Hummell

YORK - Mrs. Mary Jane Hummell was born on March 3, 1953 in St. Louis, Mo. and passed away on March 13, 2003, at York Hospital in York, from complications resulting from a severe case of septic pneumonia. As it did throughout her life, her strong and loving heart held fast during her 30-day struggle for survival. She was a bright star of enthusiasm and gentle kindness in the lives of everyone she touched. She was a joyfully devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and eldest sister with nine brothers and sisters. She found great joy in caring for anyone in need including the residents at Sentry Hill Retirement Home where she worked as a CNA.

In passing as in life, she was deeply loved and she will be profoundly missed by her husband, children, friends and co-workers.

A Memorial Service will be held today at 11 a.m. in the First Parish Congregational Church, York.

Donald Knox, 83

MURRAY HILL, N.J. - Donald E. Knox, 83, of Murray Hill, N.J., died on April 13, 2003 at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, N.J.

He was the husband of Roberta (nee Goettler), father of Scott and Doug Knox, brother of the late Bernice Balcom, grandfather of Rebecca and Victoria Knox.

He was born in Oakdale, Mass. and lived in Wells from 1931 to 1958, in Cincinnati, Ohio for eight years working for Drackett Company, as a purchasing agent before moving to Murray Hill 37 years ago. He worked for Calmar Inc. in Watchung, N.J. from 1968 to 1988 retiring as prsident and CEO. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving with the 809th Aviation Engineers. He was a member of Ocean Lodge 142 F&AM of Wells, Priscilla Chapter 35 O.E.S. of Wells and N.J. State Golf Association, I.O.O.F. of Kennebunk and the Pine Tree Encampment of Kennebunk.

Relatives and friends may attend the funeral service at the Brough Funeral Home, 535 Springfield Ave. (Corner Morris Avenue), Summit, N.J. on Saturday at 11 a.m. Visitation between 10 and 11 a.m. on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Wells Historical Society, Wells, ME 04090 or the charity of your choice. Interment will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Paul McGuinness, 69

MILLIS, Mass. - Paul L. McGuinness, 69, of Millis, Mass., formerly of Wellesley, Mass. and Moody Beach died April 13, 2003 at his home in Millis.

He was the beloved husband of Phyllis H. (Giovasky) McGuinness for 42 years, the son of the late Felix and Anne (Toland) McGuinness, brother of Anne M. Shepherd of West Dennis, Mass., Rose K. O'Rourke of Edgewater, Fla., formerly of Wilmington, Mass., Robert D. McGuinness of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Natick, Mass. and the late Felix J. McGuinness. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was owner of the Community Coach of Millis, former owner of the Wellesley Community Taxi, a graduate of Wellesley High School, class of 1952, a member of the Itaio American Educational Club of Wellesley, the Waltham Moose Lodge, Natick Lodge of Elks, Moody Beach Assoc., Wells.

A funeral was held Wednesday at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, of Wellesley, Mass. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, Needham, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VNA Care Network-Hospice, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608.

Gladys Moulton, 91

CAPE NEDDICK - Gladys E. Moulton, 91, formerly of 133 Mountain Rd., died April 15, 2003 at the Harbor Home.

She was born in Cape Neddick, the daughter of Edmond and Lizzy (Plaisted) Welch and attended York schools.

She worked for many years as a chambermaid at the Goldenrod and in private homes and local hotels. She enjoyed knitting, traveling, crosswords and time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth L. Moulton, who died in 1985. She was also predeceased by a brother, Everett Welch, three sisters, Mildred Currier, Beulah Smith and Isabel Norton and by a granddaughter, Sue Stevens and a son-in-law, Lester C. Stevens.

Survivors include, four sons, Carroll E. Moulton of Victoria, Texas, Leslie Moulton of Wells, Elmer A. Moulton Sr. and Kenneth E. Moulton, both of Cape Neddick; five daughters, Joan Kindred, Barbara Stevens and Jean Stevens, all of Wells, Gay Anderson of Vienna, Maine and Patricia Moulton of Cape Neddick; 26 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. in the First Parish Cemetery, York St., York. The Rev. Charles Jepson Jr. will officiate. Family requests no flowers.
