Katherine Norton, 91

CAPE NEDDICK - Katherine A. Norton, 91, of 29 Locust La., So. Berwick, formerly of Mountain Road, Cape Neddick, died April 7, 2003 at her residence after a long illness.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1911 in York, the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Moulton) Briley and attended York schools.

She managed summer properties in Ogunquit and worked as a private housekeeper for many years.

She had been a member of the Agamenticus Christian Church. She had lived in the Agamenticus Village area her whole life and was known as the Pillar of Agamenticus Village. She enjoyed going to yard sales and was an avid card player. She loved people and spent much of her time helping people in the area.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Roland Perkins in 1965 and by her second husband, Daniel E. Norton, who died in 1989. She was also predeceased by a son, Harold L. Perkins in 1995; two brothers, Joseph and Thurston Briley and a sister, Florence Alley.

Survivors include one son, Donald Everett Perkins of Eliot; one daughter, Muriel R. Smith of So. Berwick; one brother, Henry Briley of Cape Neddick; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday April 25 in the First Parish Cemetery, York St., York. Family flowers only.

Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc., PO Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Frances Rooney, 64

WELLS - Frances M. Rooney, 64, of Chicks Crossing Road in Wells, died on April 11, 2003 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1938 in Brookline, Mass., a daughter of Ralph and Mary (Smith) Gunther. She attended Brookline schools and was a graduate of Brookline High School.

She was a homemaker who was an avid bridge player, and could often be found volunteering at local schools. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Wells, and ran the food pantry there.

She is survived by her husband Thomas F. Rooney Sr. of Wells; two sons, Joseph L. Rooney of Salem, N.H. and Thomas F. Rooney Jr. of California; two daughters, Patricia A. Ziehler of Litchfield, N.H. and Maryann R. Fink of Sanford; one brother, Ralph Gunther of Florida; and six grandchildren, Jessica, Krista, Patrick, Katelyn, Rachel and Lauren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at St. Mary's Church, 236 Eldridge Rd., Wells.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Mary's Food Pantry, 236 Eldridge Rd., Wells, ME 04090.

Maurice Weare

NAPA, Calif. - Maurice Perkins Weare died April 9, 2003 in Napa after a long illness. He was born Aug. 31, 1908 in York, Maine, one of six children of Charles and Adelia (Perkins) Weare. He was a longtime and 11th-generation resident of the town of York.

He is survived by Charlotte A. Weare, his loving wife of 55 years; two daughters, Kathryn M. Weare of York, and Barbara L. Weare of Napa, Calif.; two grandsons, Alexander and Joseph Pader of Napa; and one brother, Charles Weare of York.

He graduated from York High School in 1926, and from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, class of '31. He served three years in World War II in the Army Coast Artillery. He was the third generation innkeeper and operator of The Cliff House in York from 1942 to 1979. He was a charter member of Maine Publicity Bureau (Maine Tourism Association) and a longtime member of Maine and New England Innkeepers Associations.

Bruce Woodward

YORK - Bruce R. Woodward, 216 Route 103, York, died April 19, 2003 at Maine Medical Center after a valiant fight against cancer.

He was born in York May 6, 1940, the son of Russell and Edith (Ferrin) Woodward. He attended York schools graduating in 1958.

He worked in the family business, Austin Gas & Electric after which he was employed by Eastern Propane of Rochester until his retirement in 2000.

He was a devoted member of the York Volunteer Fire Dept. for 43 years, serving in many capacities during that time. He enjoyed deep-sea fishing, outdoor activities and woodworking.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Tracy (Woodward) Byrd who died in October 2001.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shirley (Balentine) Woodward of York; his parents of York;

two daughters, Penny and husband Jay Phillips of Columbus Ohio and Alison Thompson of Dover, N.H.;

one granddaughter, Olivia Mae Phillips of Columbus, Ohio; one son-in-law, Robert Byrd of Lowell, Mass.; one brother, Gerald and his wife Luann Woodward of Wells; one niece, Evelyn Woodward of Brandon, Fla.; and one cousin, Anna Woodward of York.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the First Parish Cemetery, York. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only.

Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Fire Department, 1 Firehouse Dr., York, ME 03909.

Greta Chick, 98

KENNEBUNKPORT - Greta S. Chick, 98, a resident of South Maine Street, Kennebunkport died April 16, 2003 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a brief illness.

She was born on March 13, 1905, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley. She attended Bangor schools and graduated from Bangor High School.

She was a teacher in Bangor schools for several years.

In most of her life, she was a homemaker. For several years, she and her late husband owned and operated Chick's Housekeeping Cabins and the Berry Gardens both of Kennebunkport. She was a member of Aurora Chapter Order of the Eastern Star of Kennebunkport.

She enjoyed cooking, crochet and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Daniel Chick and her son Carlton Chick.

She is survived by her four grandchildren, Paul W. Chick of Kennebunkport, Robert L. Chick of West Kennebunk, Donna E. of Biddeford and Wendy A. Merrill of Lincoln; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

An Eastern Star service was held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Funeral service was held Friday at the Chapel with Pastor Dan Moore officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Judith Funston, 78

KENNEBUNK - Judith Woodman Funston, 78, of Kennebunk, formerly of Boylston, Mass., died April 14, 2003 at a Kennebunk area nursing home.

She was born in Utica, N.Y., a daughter of Karl Ayer and Doris (Kingsley) Woodman. She graduated from Dean Academy in Pepperill, Mass., and received a certificate of occupational therapy from Endicott Junior College.

She was a homemaker, and cared for her mentally challenged daughter for 41 years. She volunteered with Special Olympics, enjoyed knitting, and was a caregiver for many people and would always help out others including the residents of Kennebunk Nursing Center. Always with a smile on her face, she loved being around her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Cmdr. William Howard Funston III on Sept. 6, 1986.

She is survived by three daughter, Deirdre L. Foster of Kennebunk, Deborah L. Carlson of San Diego, Calif., and Derrell L. Funston of Biddeford; four grandchildren, Mark Lozoraitis of Falmouth, Matthew Lozoraitis of Worcester, Mass. and Justin and Kylan Carlson, both of San Diego, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Emily Grace Lozoraitis of Falmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Godin House, 445 A Main St., Biddeford, ME 04005.

Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Georgette McKenney, 65

KENNEBUNKPORT - Georgette M-R. McKenney, 65, died April 18, 2003, surrounded by her family at her residence on the Wildes District Road in Kennebunkport after a long battle with cancer. She was the wife of Raymond E. McKenney.

She was born in Biddeford Dec. 15, 1937, a daughter of Laurent and Rolande (Lemieux) Gaudette. She attended Biddeford schools and St. Andre's School in Biddeford. She was employed in Kennebunk as an assembler at the former Keuffel & Esser Company for more than 20 years. She also was employed at the former Kesslen Shoe Company in Kennebunk. She enjoyed playing beano and playing several cards at the same time. She also enjoyed her flower gardens at her home.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years; one daughter, Linda McKenney Leach and her husband Raymond (Toby) Leach of Kennebunkport; five brothers, George Dubois, Robert Gaudette, Raymond Gaudette, Conrad Gaudette all of Biddeford and Paul Gaudette of Stafford. Conn.; two grandchildren, Amanda Leach and Nathan Leach; several nieces and nephews.

At her request there will be no memorial services, the family will privately remember. Interment was in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

Meta Rust, 80

YORK - Meta (Libby) Rust, 80, resident of York, died peacefully April 15, 2003 at her home after an extended illness. She was predeceased by her husband Myron D. Rust in 1984.

She was born in South Portland Jan. 7, 1923, a daughter of Carl Clarence and Lillian (Marie) Nielsen Libby. She attended South Portland schools and graduated from South Portland High School class of 1940. She then went on to the former Maine General Hospital School of Nursing class of 1944.

She was employed at Maine General Hospital and Mass. General Hospital in Boston for several years while her late husband attended law school. She then returned to York where she worked as an R.N., York Hospital where she served as supervisor of the operating room, the recovery room, central supply and the emergency room. She retired from nursing in 1984.

She was a member and served on the board of Deacon's of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach; a member and Past Matron of Fadette Chapter, Order of Eastern Star of York and served as Mother Advisor of the Rainbow Girls Assemble 23. She was an active member of the York Republican Committee and a member of Gateway to Maine Republican Women's Club of York County. She served on the board of trustees of the York Health Foundation and was a member of the York Hospital Nurses Club. She enjoyed music and playing her piano and organ. Following her retirement she also enjoyed golf and traveling.

Her husband, two brothers Kenneth Nielsen Libby and Richard Mortensen Libby and a nephew Allan E. Libby and his wife Linda predeceased her.

She is survived by one son, John Davis Rust and daughter Libby Karen Rust both of York; one brother, Frederick Clifford Libby and his wife Joan of Morehead City N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis M. Libby of Dunedin, Fla. and Pauline T. Libby of Morgan Hill, Calif. Several nieces and nephews also survive: Kenneth N. Libby and his wife Karen and their sons Matt and Andrew; F. Clifford Libby and his wife Barbara and their sons Carl and Erik;

Hiram A. Libby and his wife Caren and his sons Hiram II and Nicholas; Fred Libby; Allan E. Libby II; Marshall D. Rust and his wife Almeda, Douglas Rust, Brian Rust; Lorna Libby Kocci and her husband Douglas and her children Scott Barrett and Katherine Barrett; Diana Libby and her daughter Maylee; Michelle Libby Neves; and two cousins, Evelyn N. Cox and Iver Clifford Nielsen.

Graveside services will be held at noon on Saturday at the First Parish cemetery in York with the Rev. Patricia Smith officiating the service. Family flowers only please.

Lena Violette, 83

ARUNDEL - Lena W. Violette, 83, a resident of Arundel formerly of Kennebunk, died April 15, 2003 at the Renaissance Nursing Home in Biddeford after a brief illness.

She was born in Caribou, Maine on April 3, 1920, a daughter of Harry and Lillian (Clark) Hazlett. She attended Caribou schools.

She was employed by the former Kesslen Shoe Company of Kennebunk as machine operator for 25 years.

She was a member of the Kennebunk Baptist Church of Kennebunk. She enjoyed making quilts and camping.

She was predeceased by her husband Leo P. Violette Sr. who died in 1992.

She is survived by one son, Leo P Violette Jr. of Arundel; one sister, Margaret Morrill of Plainville, Conn.; two grandsons, Steven L. Violette of Hollis and Donald Holbrook Jr. of Arundel; two granddaughters, Lori A. Holbrook of Albuqueque, New Mexico and Sherri L. Shook of Arundel; two great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Thursday April 17th, 2003 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk where

A funeral was held Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with the Rev. James King officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk.

Charles Marshall Forrest II

KENNEBUNKPORT - Charles Marshall Forrest II, 75, of Kennebunkport, passed away May 10, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford, after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Ruth (Drury) Forrest.

He was born in Lowell, Mass. on June 25, 1927, a son of Charles G. and Doris (Howard) Forrest and graduated from Mt. Hermon School. After graduating, he joined the Navy serving in the Philippines during World War II. Following his service in the Navy he attended the University of Washington and Jefferson.

He began his professional career as a vice president of Pratt & Forrest Lumber Company, a family-owned business in Lowell, Mass. After moving to Kennebunkport in 1968, he was the vice president and general manager of Fox Lumber Company through 1990. He finished his career working with his son William at Forrest Associates, a consulting Company.

An avid golfer, he was a past member of Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, Mass. where he was a

President's Cup Champion. He also played many rounds with family and friends at Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport. He was a past member and treasurer of the Arundel Yacht Club and a member of the South Congregational Church both of Kennebunkport

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth (Drury) Forrest of Kennebunkport; one daughter, Anne Forrest Raynor of Kennebunkport; three sons, Captain Charles Marshall Forrest III of Kennebunkport, William Drury Forrest of Greenwich, Conn. and Edward Howard Forrest of Highlands, N.C.; two grandchildren, Kyle Clinton Raynor and Isabella Julian Forrest; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Jacobs of Warren, Pa. and Mrs. John (Shirley) Fenner of Rotunda, Fla.

A private family service will be held in June.
