Frederic Nourse III, 67

BOONE, N.C. - Mr. Frederick Russell Nourse III, 67, of Sugar Grove, N.C., died the morning of April 21, 2003 at home.

He was born Feb. 9, 1936, in New York City, to the late Frederic Russell Nourse Jr. and Margaret Dunn Nourse Ross.

He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He formerly worked in real estate in Maine, New Hampshire, Florida and North Carolina, after which he owned and operated his own real estate appraisal firm. He was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis, N.C.

Survivors include his former wife, Renee Rand of Sugar Grove; one son, Frederic Russell Nourse IV and wife Terry, and two sisters, Martha Nourse Reynolds and Nancy Ross Carroll, all of Ocala, Fla.; one stepson, Richard Rand III and wife Debbie of Atlanta, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Whitney Rand Franz, Courtney Rand James and husband Dr. Luke James, and Christina Rand, all of Durham, N.C.; three step-grandchildren, Richard Rand IV of Atlanta, Ga.; Manfred and Sebastian Franz, both of Durham, N.H.; and one cousin, Denise Powers and her daughter Jessica Donovan, both of York.

He was predeceased in death by a brother, George Dunn Nourse.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Rd., Boone, NC 28607.

Allan Schwarte, 58

WELLS - A committal service for Allan Richard Schwarte, 58, resident of the Upper Landing Road Wells will be held at the Ocean View Cemetery, Wells, at 1 p.m. Friday May 9.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice in Allan's memory to continue his legacy of serving your community.

Adelelmo Tomassini, 76

YORK - A graveside committal service for Adelelmo P. "Dan" Tomassini, 76, who passed away Dec. 22, 2002 in York, was held on Saturday in the Hillside Cemetery, Route 4, North Berwick, with Rev. Robert G. Cole Sr. Officiating.

Carolyn Cray, 64

WELLS - Carolyn J. Cray, 64, of Burnt Mill Rd. Committal service 3 p.m. Friday, Ocean View Cemetery, Wells with the Rev. Henry presiding. Lisa Hutchins, 38

WELLS - Lisa Hutchins, formerly known as Lisa Heft, 38, of Wire Road, died April 27, 2003 at her residence, surrounded by her family, following a long illness.

She was born Dec. 30, 1964, in Sanford, a daughter of Kenneth and Muriel (Sayward) Hutchins and was educated in Kennebunk and Wells schools.

She owned and operated the horse boarding stable "Whispering Pines" in Wells, and worked at the Lighthouse Depot in Kennebunk for three years, leaving there in February 2002 due to illness.

She enjoyed bike riding and spinning, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding and spending many hours with her niece, Amanda.

Surviving are: her mother, Mrs. Robert (Muriel) Dickson of Wells; her father, Kenneth Gilman Hutchins of Kennebunk; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Tina) Cole of Wells; one brother, Craig Hutchins of Wells.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced by Wells Congregational Church in Wells with Pastor Herb Henry officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Kennebunk.

Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford.

Mary Bergstrom, 82

KENNEBUNK - Mary E. Bergstrom, 82, a resident of Huntington Common Drive, Kennebunk, formerly of Wethersfield, Conn., died March 5, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford, after a brief illness. She died peacefully with her family by her side.

She was born in Hartford, Conn. on Feb. 9, 1921, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Martin) Bergstrom. She graduated from Weaver High School and Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford, Conn. In the spring of 1944, she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. During World War II, she spent time in England as a first lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She liked to tell the story of being in Piccadilly Circus in London on VE-Day. After the war ended, she lived in Burlington, Vermont before returning to her home in Connecticut to become a nurse at the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1987, she retired from Connecticut Mutual to her home in Wethersfield, Conn. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Wethersfield. In July 2001, she moved to Kennebunk.

She was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Bergstrom, and two sisters Florence Trerice and Charlotte Bergstorm.

She is survived by one brother, Carl Bergstrom and his wife Lorraine of Eastham, Mass.; three nieces, Judith Rose of Kennebunk, Deborah Holland of Sherborn, Mass., and Donna Hutchinson of Wellesley, Mass.; two nephews, Roger Trerice and John Bergstrom, both of Wethersfield, Conn. as well as many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

There are no visiting hours. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. There was a memorial service to celebrate her life Monday at the Huntington Common, Huntington Common Drive, Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thomas E. Starzi Transplantation Institute, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Montefiore 7 South, 3459 5th Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, Attn: Sandy RN.

Dr. Bruce Nelson, 83

CAPE PORPOISE - Dr. Bruce Kinloch Nelson, 83, of Langsford Road, died on March 5, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1919, in Christiansburg, Va., a son of the Rev. Mr. Robert Burwell Nelson and his wife Sallie Bruce (Seddon) Nelson. He graduated from the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. He attended the University of Virginia where he received degrees in mechanical, aeronautical and electrical engineering. He also received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York and was a member of the American Academy of Sciences.

He was a long-time resident of Concord, Mass. Dr. Nelson and his wife spent their summers in Cape Porpoise, beginning in 1984 and moved there permanently in 1995. A family man, he delighted in the comings and goings and doings of his wife and children.

He is survived by his wife, Louise (Moore) Nelson of Cape Porpoise; one son, B. Kinloch Nelson Jr. of Rochester, N.Y.; one daughter, Beverly Burwell (Nelson) Elder of Cusco, Peru; and two grandchildren, Rosalie Alyria Elder and Marco Fabio Elder.

Memorial services will be held at the Church on the Cape on Sunday at 2 p.m., and on the following weekend in Christ Church, Winchester, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Watertown, Mass.

Edith Preston, 93

SANFORD - Edith M. Preston, 93, a two-year resident of the Atria in Kennebunk, passed away March 5, 2003, in the Newton Rehabilitation Center in Sanford, where she had been for the past six months.

She was born in New Brunswick, Canada on Jan. 6, 1910, a daughter of Joseph B. and Sarah (Starrak) Miller. She came to the United States in November of 1941. She worked for the Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Company for more than 20 years.

She married Frank L. Preston in 1948 and together they moved to North Berwick in 1964. She worked as a teller at the First National Bank in North Berwick for seven years.

Throughout her life, she was actively involved in volunteer work in support of local charities. Since 1986, she was very active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program at the Old Timers Shop in Sanford. She was also very active in the Sanford United Methodist Church.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1986 and a sister, Annie Miller Trites.

Surviving are one stepdaughter, Lillian Preston Carlson of Lexington, Mass.; one granddaughter, Marsha Carlson Gette of Newburyport, Mass.; one great-granddaughter, Melissa Gette Hawkins; one great-grandson, Christopher Gette; two great-great-granddaughters, Emily and Annikah Hawkins, several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Interment followed in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park cemetery in Peabody, Mass.

Friends who wish may contribute to the Crossroads United Methodist Church in Sanford or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Harry Scott Jr., 81

BIDDEFORD - Harry A. Scott Jr., 81, of Dearborn Avenue, died March 6, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born in Biddeford on April 6, 1921, the son of Harry A. and Caroline G. (McCarthy) Scott Sr. and was a graduate of St. Mary's School and Biddeford High School class of 1938, where he was outstanding in basketball and drama.

On June 10, 1944, he married Elizabeth Norwood at Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco.

He retired from the Biddeford post office in 1978 after serving as a letter carrier and postal clerk for 37 years.

He was a prominent basketball official in southeastern Maine for more than 20 years, refereeing many high school and semi-pro games in the area.

After his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service he was employed at Southern Maine Medical Center for many years. While there, he wrote and compiled the SMMC Security Manual, while serving as the hospital's first supervisor of security. He was formed to resign due to illness.

He was formerly a member and president of Branch 166, National Association of Letter Carriers, and a vice president of its Maine State Association. He was an associate of the American Postal Workers Union. He was an honorary member of the Western Maine Board of the International Board of Approved Basketball Officials and at one time was an executive board member.

He had been a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and belonged to the American Association of Retired Persons.

He was a member of St. Mary's Parish and of the former Holy Name Society. He served at one time as a lector of the church.

He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (Norwood) Scott in December of 2002 and two sisters, Rita Scott Ross Henker and Eleanor Scott Polackwich.

Surviving are one son, Kenneth J. of Biddeford; three daughters, Carolyn L. Scott of Biddeford, Bethany (Mrs. Rick) Kadlec of Biddeford, Barbara (Mrs. Jerry) Keene of Bar Harbor; one brother, Robert F. of Winthrop; and seven grandchildren.

Martin Ulan, 57

BIDDEFORD - Martin O. "Oley" Ulan, 57, of Roundhill Home, Roundhill Street, formerly of York Street, York, died March 9, 2003 at Evergreen Manor in Saco.

He was born in Newark, N.J., a son of Martin S. and Gladys (Olsen) Ulan and attended Essie Abell School and Hackensack, N.J., public schools. He later attended the American Institute of Mental Studies in Vineland, N.J., learning life skills.

He worked as a wood cutter at Creative Works Systems in Biddeford, a subsidiary of Maine Woodworkers of Saco.

He was a member of the Anchor Baptist Church in Biddeford.

He enjoyed reading the Bible and listening to Opera at the Met on the radio. He had the ability to tell a person the day of the week on which they were born when given the date of their birth. He especially enjoyed gatherings with his family and friends. He constantly struggled with challenges that life sent his way.

He was predeceased by his father, Martin S. Ulan, who died in 1995.

Survivors include his mother, Gladys (Olsen) Ulan of York Beach; one sister, Mardys C. Leeper of Wynnewood, Pa.; two nieces, Lauren Yattaw of Providence, R.I. and Monica Brooke of Bryn Mawr, Pa.

A funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Anchor Baptist Church, Foss and Pool streets, Biddeford.

Kristina Williams, 56

KENNEBUNK - Kristina A. (Stetson) Williams, 56, of Kennebunk died May 2, 2003 after a short battle with cancer, at her daughter's residence on Baker Street in Wilmington, Mass.

She was born in New Haven, Conn., the daughter of the late Joseph and the late Greta (Svenson) Stetson. She graduated from college having earned a master's degree and was employed as a clinical social worker. She dedicated her life to family and friends and helping others.

She is survived by her two daughters, Carolyn McBain and her husband Tim of Mendon, Vt., and Anne Land and her husband Gary and their children Evan 6, Lexie 3 and Brayden 7 months, all of Wilmington, Mass.; one brother, Joseph York Stetson and; her former husband James F. Williams.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the W.S. Cavanaugh & Son Funeral Home, Wilmington, Mass.

Sarah Bryant, 84

KENNEBUNK - Sarah (Seavey) Bryant, 84, died on April 29, 2003 at the Barron Center in Portland.

She was born on May 1, 1918, in Kennebunkport, a daughter of Albert W. and Fannie E. Seavey. She attended Kennebunkport schools and was a 1937 graduate of Kennebunkport High School. She also graduated from Shaw's Business School in Portland.

She was employed as a secretary at Mercy Hospital in Portland, as a legal secretary for Attorney Reagan of Kennebunk, a secretary to the superintendent of schools for SAD 71 of Kennebunk, and also worked for George Mitchell in Portland for several years.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cross-stitching, knitting and crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Kennebunk and belonged to the First Church of Christ Scientist, Mother Church in Boston, Mass.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Wilbur, Richard, Paul and Albert Seavey; and two sisters, Alberta Shaner and Lillian Stearns.

She is survived by two sons, Calvin Bryant of Cape Porpoise, and Russell Bryant of Woodbridge, Va.; two daughters, Judith Black of Pomfret, Conn., and Alice Doyle of Middleburgh, N.Y.; five sisters, Frances Derham of Westbrook, Mary Bridges of Westbrook, Eleanor LaFerriere of New Jersey, Elizabeth Derham of Westbrook, and Cynthia Bonsey of Lisbon Falls; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. Burial was in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Kennebunk Health and Home Care Services, PO Box 739, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Gertrude Hall, 76

BERWICK - Gertrude D. Hall, 76, died on Jan. 27, 2003 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick with Father Hilary Cameron officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick.
