Joshua Kinney, 19

KENNEBUNK In the early morning of Monday, June 9, my brother, Lance Corporal Joshua L Kinney, 19, of the United States Marine Corps died of injuries suffered from a motor vehicle accident in Sanford. He had just returned from serving his country in Iraq, and was two weeks from his 20th birthday.

He was born in Presque Isle on June 22, 1983 and had lived in Burlington, Vt. and Nashua, N.H. and attended schools in Bangor and Kennebunk. He excelled at anything he tackled and was an excellent student with many friends who gravitated to his charming warmth and his lovable good nature. For a young man, he was gifted with children and loved animals. He could make a kid feel like the center of the universe, and one day he would have made an amazing Dad.

When his road went uphill as it often seemed to do, he gritted his teeth and made a promise to himself not to stumble. And when he surmounted harder obstacles than most people will face, he dusted off his jacket and kept on marching, stronger and faster. When other people fell on their own path, he stopped to help them up.

That's why the first and last image anyone sees when thinking of Josh is his magnificent smile. His smile, which slid so easily onto his face, demanded your heart's surrender. It was so radiantly pure that pictures of his smiling face make everything OK. In pictures of him in the bleak landscape of Iraq, his smile was a beacon of light and hope against a dark backdrop. When he and I and three friends were involved in a serious car accident several years ago, he pushed the truck off the car and pulled each passenger one-by-one from the wreck he thought might explode. When he went back in for the last friend, he found him to be pinned. He sat with our friend, holding his hand and talking to him until paramedics arrived. He rarely mentioned his involvement, and only when prompted.

And for all his versatility in being a good human being, he was also a brilliant soldier. He was selected for the Academic Honor Graduate of Basic Combat Engineer Course, and his adaptability and intelligence quickly accumulated the recognition of his superiors. When he was selected to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom recently, he was chosen to be a fire-team leader among his squad in the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, a part of the 2nd Division of the Marine Corps. He was promoted to Lance Corporal and drove a Humvee from Kuwait into Baghdad where he did humanitarian missions after Baghdad fell. He loved the Marine Corps, his "brothers" in it and the ability it gave him to help people, whether it was as defender of American people or builder of Iraqi schools.

When rebuilding one of the schools there, he befriended a little Iraqi girl. He called her his little angel, and thought she was one of the most beautiful little girls he'd ever seen. As he recounted the story to me, he was very creative in thinking up ways to express his affection for this girl. He told me that every day he would play with her, and every night he would say his good-byes just in case he didn't see her again. He had a picture taken of him with her in his arms where their heads are thrown back laughing.

Josh, if you get the newspaper in heaven, know that I love you brother and even though we never said our goodbyes, I feel your soul next to mine and you are never truly gone. I cry for the life you might have had, but the one you lived makes me more proud of you than you could have known and I know that by God's side you will again be a brilliant soldier. I'll always be your loving brother, Morgan. Josh Kinney is survived by his mother, Jane A. Kinney of Bangor and his father Robert L. Langlois of Kennebunk; one brother, Morgan A. Kinney and one sister, Kathryn J. Kinney, both of Kennebunk; his maternal grandfather, Harold A. Kinney of Easton, and paternal grandmother, Lauretta Brosseau of Colchester, Vt.; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, Sunday with full military honors. Internment was in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Joshua L. Kinney Memorial Fund in care of Kennebunk High School, 89 Fletcher St., Kennebunk, ME 04043. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
