Millicent Patstone, 53

SANFORD ­ Millicent I. Patstone, 53, a resident of Brunell Avenue, Sanford, died on June 11, 2003 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a brief illness. She was born in Claremont, N.H. on July 2, 1949, a daughter of Albert W. and Evelyn M. (Wolfe) Hall. She graduated from Stevens High School in Claremont, N.H. and she also graduated from Keene State College, Keene, N.H., class of 1974.

She was a teacher for Cousens School of Kennebunk for 28 years until her illness few months ago. She was a member of the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport Education Association, the Maine Teachers Association, the National Teachers Association and the Kennebunk and Kennebunkport Teachers Association and she also member of the North Berwick Baptist Church. She enjoyed crafts, reading, her flower garden, and loved the ocean and her family.

She is survived by her mother of Claremont, N.H.; her husband of 24 years, Daniel Patstone; her two children, Derek H. Patstone and Sara H. Patstone, all of Sanford; one sister, Marilyn A Giles of Kennebunk; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Celebration of life memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Porter officiating. Should friends desire, memorial donations my be made in Mrs. Patstone's memory to the Millicent Irene Patstone Scholarship Fund c/o Kennebunk and Kennebunkport Education Association, 1 Storer St., Kennebunk, ME 04043. Charles Philbrick Sr., 88

KENNEBUNK ­ Charles W. Philbrick Sr., 88, a resident of Kennebunk formerly of Arundel Road, Kennebunkport, died June 16, 2003 at the Riverridge , Kennebunk after a long illness. He was born in Kennebunkport on May 16 1915, a son of George and Clarissa (Speed) Philbrick.

He graduated from Kennebunkport High School and was a World War II veteran serving the United States Navy. He was a longtime carpenter and builder in Kennebunkport area for many years.

He enjoyed gardening and his yard work

He was predeceased by his wife, Elsie E. Hutchins Philbrick, his daughter, Beatrice Philbrick and his brother, R. Longley Philbrick. He is survived by one son, Charles W. Philbrick Jr. of Edgartown, Mass.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport with the Rev. David Wigley officiating. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

William Pomerleau Jr.

KITTERY ­ William Alexis Pomerleau Jr., 74, of Stevenson Road in Kittery, died June 10, 2003 at Portsmouth Hospital. born in Limerick on May 25, 1929, he was a son of William A. Sr. and Doris

A. (Eastman ) Pomerleau. He served his country as a member of the United States Army for more than 20 years serving in supply and a number of other positions. Most recently he had worked for more than 14 years for Fosters Daily Democrat Newspaper in Dover, New Hampshire in the Circulation Department serving customers in the Kittery, Eliot area and beyond, he was known for his strong work ethic and kind demeanor, always willing to take that extra

second for a conversation. He enjoyed working in his gardens with his wife, growing flowers and tending a huge vegetable garden that he shared with many. His grandchildren will miss their yearly pumpkin he grew for each of them. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and collecting a number of things. He enjoyed membership in the Eliot American Legion Post 188, the Sportsman Alliance of Maine, the National Rifle Association and the Loyal Order of Moose 444 of Portsmouth, N.H. He was also a member of St. Raphael Parish

Church in Kittery. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him; they include his family; his loving wife Kathleen (Bates) Pomerleau of Kittery; his children; four sons, Robert L. Pomerleau and his wife Marline of Rochester, N.H., William A. Pomerleau III of South Berwick, Brian O. Pomerleau and his wife Rhonda of Kittery, and SSGT Bruce A. Wark II of Korea; two daughters, Michelle and her husband Peter Buckley of Durham, N.H., and Lisa Anne Wark of Connecticut; eight grandchildren with whom he enjoyed a special relationship with each, Jacob, Chrystal, Molly, Brian and Rene Pomerleau, Tylor Blaine, and Jared and Kyle Wark; five sisters, Phyllis Chambers and her husband Larry of N.C., Theresa DeIuliis and her husband Luke of Va., Louise Knauss and her husband Daniel of Pa., Roberta DeVall of Fla., and Joan Browning and her husband of Bruce, N.C. He was predeceased by his brother Herman Pomerleau, a grandson, Jerimiah Pomerleau and a granddaughter, Vanessa Ashley Wark. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on at his church St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery.

Family flowers only please. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St., Alexandria VA 22311.

Mary Ranta, 74

OGUNQUIT ­ Mary Patricia (Pat) Ranta, 74, of Ogunquit, formerly of Paxton, died on June 14, 2003 at her home, after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Frank Ranta of Ogunquit; two sons, David Ranta of York and John Ranta of Princeton, Mass.; four daughters, Judith Ranta of White Plains, N.Y., Mary Ellen Robinson of Rutland, Mass., Christine Ranta of York, and Cynthia Emerson of Cape Neddick; four brothers, Richard Mullaney, Paul Mullaney, Harold Mullaney and Gerald Mullaney; one sister, Doris Marengo, as well as 11 grandchildren. born April 12, 1929 in Worcester, she was the daughter of Doris and Augustus Mullaney. She grew up in Worcester and moved to Paxton as a teenager, where she edited the Paxton Pump, a town newsletter that was sent to all of the local men and boys serving overseas in World War II. She attended Classical High School and then Becker Junior College, where she studied business administration.

As a teenager she managed her parents' soda shop in Tatnuck. After college she worked in office administration at Paul Revere Life Insurance and Sawyer's Lumber in Worcester as well as Sears Roebuck in Seattle, Wash. where she moved when her husband Frank took a job with Boeing in 1949. After moving back to Paxton in 1951, she set aside her business career to begin a family. While her children were growing up, she served as a den leader for many years in the Brownies and Girl Scouts in Paxton. In addition she did volunteer work for the Paxton PTA and St. Columba's Church. After her children were grown, she resumed her business career, building on her life-long love of knitting and sewing to start her own business, the Needle People Place. Her shop in Tatnuck Square in Worcester was the focal point for knitters and needle pointers throughout Worcester County for 10 years, and she was also a founding member of the Tatnuck Businessmen's Association. She relocated her shop to Ogunquit when she moved there in 1984. While living in Ogunquit she has been a coordinator at Laudholm Farms and Meals on Wheels, a member of St. Mary's Parish of Wells and the Senior Center of Lower Village of Kennebunk. She also was an avid bridge player and belong to many clubs.

A memorial Mass followed by a luncheon will be held at St. Mary's Church in Wells at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Senior Center of Lower Village, 175 Port Rd., Kennebunk, ME 04043. Bibber Memorial Chapel in Wells is directing arrangements.

Ruth Harter, 84

KENNEBUNK - Ruth A. Harter, 84, formerly of Larboard Lane, died on May 31, 2003, at a local nursing home after a long battle with skin cancer.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald R. Harter, senior partner of Harter, Secrest and Emery, Attorneys, Rochester, N.Y.

She was the daughter of Richard and Ethel (Munson) Ashdown, who both died when she was a child. She was raised in Geneva, N.Y., by her aunt and uncle, Marjorie Guilford Humphrey and R. Elroy Humphrey.

She resided in Rochester, N.Y. for more than 35 years and was an active volunteer for Cerebral Palsy Association of Al Sigl Center; Junior Aides for the Handicapped; St. Paul's Episcopal Church Altar Guild; and Redwood Twig of Genesee Hospital. She was also a member of Genesee Valley Club and Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.

She first came to Kennebunk Beach in 1957 and took up residence at 5 Ridge Ave. Kennebunk in 1981. She was active at the Trinity Chapel of Kennebunk Beach and St. Ann's Altar Guild. She was also a social member of Webhannet Golf Club, Kennebunk.

She was a founding member of the Alzheimer's Association in Rochester, N.Y.

She dearly loved her family and always said she was "our booster, backer, buffer."

She is survived by two sons, Geoffery J. Harter (Susie) of Ossining, N.Y. and Ralph M. Peter Harter (Leslie) of Pittsford, N.Y.; one daughter, Laurie S. Harter of Kennebunk; four grandchildren, David J., Kimberly S. and Donald B. Harter and Brooke Harter-Wheeler; one great-grandson, Jack B. Wheeler; and several nieces and nephews, Samuel G. Ashdown, Jr., Michael Ashdown, Michelle Ashdown Brock, Richard Harter and Robert Harter.

A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date in Kennebunkport at the convenience of the family. Interment was in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

Memorial Donations may be made in her memory to the Hospice Program of VNS, 19 Industrial Park Rd., Saco, ME 04072.

Winthrop Nickerson, 82

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Winthrop T. Nickerson, 82, formerly of Post Road in Wells, who died on March 13, 2003, was the widower of Dorothy "Wheat" Nickerson.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

John Fenderson, 48

WELLS - John Wayne Fenderson, 48, a resident of Bills Lane, Wells died May 28, 2003, at York Hospital in, York, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Kittery, Feb. 13, 1954, a son of Clarence and Ernestine (Reeves) Fenderson. He attended Wells schools and graduated from Wells High School. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a self-employed fisherman and fished for shrimp. He also enjoyed diving and dived for sea urchins during that season.

His father and one sister Gail Louise Fenderson predeceased him in 2000.

He is survived by his mother, Ernestine R. Fenderson; three sisters, Susan I. Hludik, Paula M. Fenderson and Janet D. Knight all of Wells; three brothers, Jeffery R. Fenderson of Louisiana, Joseph M. Fenderson of Alaska and James D. Fenderson of Missouri; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held Sunday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Should friends desire, memorials may be at the Cancer Unit in Care of York Hospital, 25 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Homer Waterhouse

KENNEBUNK - Homer Waterhouse, husband of Geraldine (Keating) Waterhouse of Kennebunk,

dear stepfather and grandfather of Diane Gohier Costello and Paige Schroeder of Tortoise Island, Satellite Beach, Fla., died in Kennebunk May 29, 2003.

He was born July 31,1914, a son of Homer T. Waterhouse and Bessie Waterhouse. He was a lifetime resident of Kennebunk and graduated valedictorian from Hebron Academy in 1932. He continued his studies at Bowdoin College and graduated with a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1939.

He practiced law with the law firm of Waterhouse , Spencer and Carroll. Later with Waterhouse, Carroll and Cyr, in Biddeford. He then served in World War II in the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ordnance as Lieutenant Commander in Washington, D.C.

Following the War he spent one year on Wall Street in New York City where he continued his law practice as a partner with his law firm.

He was also a past president and director of Kennebunk Savings and Loan Association, director of Canal National Bank later by merger with Key Bank of Maine for 25 years. He served as chairman of the board of directors of Pepperell Trust Company also chairman of the board of Pepperell Investments. A director of Saco River telegraph and Telephone Company and all its subsidiary companies including Star Cellular.

He was also a director of Mutual Fire Insurance Company, a lifetime member and past president of the Webhannet Golf Club also serving on the board of governors. He was a lifetime member of the Kennebunk River Club, a member of the Arundel Yacht Club, Eagle Rock Yacht Club and a lifetime member of the Edgecomb Tennis Club. He was the co-founder of the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association (K.B.I.A.) and a member of the senior center of Kennebunk.

He is also survived by two sisters Lois, Mrs. Asa Kinney of Kennebunk and Christine, Mrs. John Raines of Goose Rocks Beach; four nieces; two grandnephews; and one grand-niece.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, Interment followed in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice in Mr. Waterhouse's memory.

John Franco, 88

SUFFIELD, Conn. - John E. Franco, M.D., of Suffield, Conn., died July 10, 2003 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in St. Michaels, Azores, Portugal, he came to America with his family at the age of 4, settling in East Falmouth, Mass. He was a longtime resident of West Hartford, Conn. before moving to Suffield six years ago.

He graduated from Massachusetts State College (now University of Massachusetts) in 1936 and Tufts Medical School in 1940. Upon completion of his medical internship at St. Francis Hospital, he entered the military in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He served during World War II as a major in the 24th Infantry Division in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was a recipient of the Combat Medical Badge and the Bronze Star.

Returning to Hartford, Conn. following his military service, he joined the staff at St. Francis Hospital in 1947 and retired after 38 years of service in 1985. During these many years at his beloved St. Francis, he served in various positions and on numerous committees including chief of the Internal Medical Staff from 1955-1969. He was former Gov. John Dempsey's personal physician and was appointed major on the Governor's Military Staff. After his retirement from St. Francis, he became a consultant to the Social Security Disability Administration.

He was a former member of the Hartford County Medical Society, Wampanoag Country Club, and an active member of the UMass 20th Century Club.

He leaves one daughter Katherine Kenney and her husband Patrick of Suffield, Conn.; three sons, John of Kennebunkport, Laurence and wife Janine of Manchester, N.H., and Robert and fiancˇe Ann Bracken of Lyme, N.H.; three grandchildren, Addison and Nate Marsh and Jenni Franco; two step-grandchildren, Bevin and Molly Kenney; his special friend, Pauline Crispen; two sisters, Sarah and husband David Fraser of Canton, Conn., Mary Cambell of East Falmouth, Mass.; sister-in-law Alice Franco of Hallendale, Fla.; two nephews, John Franco and Jayme Franco; and one niece, Karen Murphy.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday in the Sacred Heart Church, Suffield, Conn. Burial was in St. Anthony's Cemetery, East Falmouth, Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association Inc., 97 Mountain Rd., Suffield, CT 06078.

Betty Hussey

SOUTH BERWICK - Betty Lee (Trafton) Hussey of 250 Knights Pond Rd., died peacefully July 14, 2003 at home surrounded by her family.

Born in York April 25, 1923, she was the daughter of Burton and Christina (Hooper) Trafton.

She graduated from Berwick Academy in 1940 and worked at the Central School cafeteria for 25 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and also attended St. John's United Methodist Church.

The widow of Edgar Hussey Sr., who died in 1987, she is survived by two sons, Dennis Hussey and his wife Suzanne of Easton, Maine and Edgar Hussey Jr. and his wife Sally of South Berwick; three daughters, Judith Ann Moses of Fairbanks, Alaska, Jane Lee Hall and her husband Ron of Tenants Harbor, Maine and Ann Lee Hussey and her husband Michael Nazemetz of South Berwick; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Marlin Trafton of Berwick.

She was predeceased by a brother Burton Trafton Jr. and a sister Ruby Perkins.

A graveside service was held Wednesday at Woodlawn cemetery with the Rev. Earle Custer, retired minister officiating. A gathering was held at her home immediately following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to her memory to First Baptist Church, 130 Main St., South Berwick, ME 03908, to St. John's United Methodist Church, 28 Cataract Ave., Dover, NH 03820 or to the charity of one's choice.

Wayne Larkin, 80

WELLS - Wayne Larkin, 80, of Ocean Avenue, died peacefully July 6, 2003, at York Hospital after a long illness.

He was born May 8, 1923 in Los Angeles, the son of Mark and Hazel (Crow) Larkin.

After graduating from high school in Richmond Hill, N.Y., he served in the Army during World War II. He later graduated from the former Hofstra College and Newark College of Engineering. For 32 years, he was employed as a technical writer for the electronic industry and as a freelance writer for defense contractors. At the time of his retirement in 1987, he was working in the computer industry.

He had resided in New Jersey and Nashua, N.H. before retiring to Wells in 1989.

He was an avid photographer and active amateur astronomer. He was a member of the Astronomical Society of Northern New England and the Society for Technical Communication. He was a Literacy Volunteer and did AARP tax preparations in the Sanford / Springvale area. He was a swimming enthusiast and completed close to 2,000 miles. He was a member of the Wells Congregational Church.

He was predeceased by a son, Ross Steven Larkin in 1957.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helene (Kydd) Larkin of Wells; two daughters, Jane M. Hamor of Danbury, N.H. and Suzanne H. Larkin of Beverly, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Brian, Seth and Sarah Hamor.

Shirley Lee, 68

KENNEBUNK - Shirley Ann Lee, 68, a resident of Jacksonville, Fla. and a summer resident of West Kennebunk, formerly of Salem and Newburyport, Mass., died July 14, 2003 at her summer residence in Maine. She was the widow of John Dana Lee who died in 1991.

She was born in Salem, Mass. July 27, 1934, a daughter of the Late Arthur G. and Charlotte M. (Boyd) Roderick Jr. She attended Salem schools and graduated from Salem High School in 1952. She attended Salem Commercial School.

She resided in Jacksonville, Fla. for more than 30 years in the winter months and for more than 20 years she was employed at H. & R. Block Company in Jacksonville, Fla. during the tax season. She was a member of the Order of the Moose in Jacksonville, a former member of the Palmer Cove Yacht Club of Salem, Mass., a member of the Golden Girls of Arundel. She traveled the world extensively with her late husband during his military career and summered in Maine for the past six years.

She is survived by two brothers, Arthur G. Roderick of Beverly, Mass. and David B. Roderick of Naples, Fla.; four sisters, Jean Theriault of Jacksonville, Fla. and West Kennebunk, with whom she made her home, Nancy and her husband James Devine of Marblehead, Mass., Sally and her husband Joseph Provencher, and Charlotte and her husband Anthony Bucco all of Salem, Mass.; one sister-in-law, Mary Signoretti of Saugus, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 9 a.m. Thursday July 24 at St. Thomas Church, Margin St., Peabody, Mass. Interment will be in Our Lady Star of the Sea Cemetery, Marblehead, Mass.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice in Mrs. Lee's memory.
