Helen Sampson, 80

KENNEBUNK - Helen M. (Barrett) Sampson, 80, a resident of Fletcher Street, Kennebunk formerly of Braintree, Mass., died June 8, 2003 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Roxbury, Mass. on Aug. 30,1922, a daughter of Joseph P. and Ellen (Rogers) Barrett. She graduated from Braintree High School, Braintree, Mass.

She was a long-time clerk for the Motor Vehicle Department for the State of Massachusetts for many years and she also was a clerk for Draft Board for the Town of Braintree for several years.

She enjoyed doing needlework.

She was predeceased by her husband George Sampson and two brothers, Joseph and Leo Barrett.

She is survived by one brother, John E. Barrett and his wife Virginia of Kennebunk, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan, Mass.

Joan Monahon

KENNEBUNK - Joan (Grant) Monahon of Huntington Common, Kennebunk, and a resident of Kennebunk for more than 75 years, died quietly in her home on July 4, 2003.

Born in Brookline, Mass., her life was one of great commitment to family and community. Following graduation from Wheelock Teachers College she taught school in Brookline, Mass., until her marriage to Richard M. Monahon of Wellesley, Mass., an ensign in the Navy at the beginning of World War II. Following the war, her young family resided in Green Lawn, Long Island and then Basking Ridge, N.J.

Her activities as a young mother in New Jersey included participation in the League of Women Voters, the local garden club and as manager of the local bookstore. Her life-long interest in and love of gardening and books provided her the opportunity to leave a remarkable legacy of volunteer work in each community in which she lived.

Following the family move to Waitsfield, Vt., she opened her own interior furnishings shop, The Village House, which she and her husband Dick ran until his death in 1981. In Waitsfield, she was active as a volunteer and trustee in the local library, and was one of the founding members of WIB, Women in Business, which was one of the first grass-roots organizations to recognize the enormous talents and energies that women were increasingly providing to the local business community.

She moved to Kennebunk, her longtime summer residence, following the sale of The Village House. She became a member and trustee of the Kennebunkport Historical Society and the Graves Library, assisting the library in every activity, including numerous fund-raising events. She maintained her great love of books, even following the increasing loss of her sight, through a new friendship with the staff of the Library of Congress Books on Tape.

She is survived by one daughter Cynthia Monahon of Northhampton, Mass.; two sons, J. Grant Monahon of Belmont, Mass. and Richard M. Monahon Jr. of Peterborough, N.H.; and five grandchildren who will all remember her warmth, love and hospitality of her homes, her independence of mind, and her positive view of the world.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. David's Church, Route 1 south, Kennebunk. A reception will be at the Huntington Common immediately following the services.

Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Laurette Goodwin, 75

WEST KENNEBUNK - Laurette J. Goodwin, 75, a resident of Alfred Road, West Kennebunk died July 6, 2003 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Manchester, N.H. on Jan. 9, 1928, a daughter of Lucian and Marie Cadieux and attended Manchester schools.

She was employed by Morning Star (Corning) of Kennebunk as assembler for more than 18 years.

She was a member of the Saco Grange of Saco, and the Advent Christian Church of Goodwins Mills, Dayton.

She enjoyed riding with her husband Karl to deliver the Biddeford Journal Tribune newspapers in the Kennebunk area for several years.

She loved sewing, gardening and also enjoyed playing in the bowling league at the Vacationland of Saco for several years.

She was predeceased by her son Lee Goodwin who died in 1979.

She is survived by her husband Karl Goodwin of West Kennebunk; two sons, Mark Goodwin of Boise Idaho and Dale Goodwin of Lyman; two daughters, Donna Stackpole of Kennebunk and Robin Milliard of West Kennebunk; one brother Fred Poirier of Gray; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at today at 1 p.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk with the Rev. Joseph J. Saunders officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk.

Wayne Larkin, 80

KENNEBUNKPORT - Wayne Larkin, 80, of Ocean Avenue, died peacefully July 6, 2003, at York Hospital after a long illness.

He was born May 8, 1923 in Los Angeles, the son of Mark and Hazel (Crow) Larkin.

After graduating from high school in Richmond Hill, N.Y., he served in the Army during World War II. He later graduated from the former Hofstra College and Newark College of Engineering. For 32 years, he was employed as a technical writer for the electronic industry and as a freelance writer for defense contractors. At the time of his retirement in 1987, he was working in the computer industry.

He had resided in New Jersey and Nashua, N.H. before retiring to Wells in 1989.

He was an avid photographer and active amateur astronomer. He was a member of the Astronomical Society of Northern New England and the Society for Technical Communication. He was a Literacy Volunteer and did AARP tax preparations in the Sanford / Springvale area. He was a swimming enthusiast and completed close to 2,000 miles. He was a member of the Wells Congregational Church.

He was predeceased by a son, Ross Steven Larkin in 1957.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helene (Kydd) Larkin of Wells; two daughters, Jane M. Hamor of Danbury, N.H. and Suzanne H. Larkin of Beverly, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Brian, Seth and Sarah Hamor.

A service of celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Wells Congregational Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St., Suite F, Augusta, ME 04330, or York Hospital, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Ruthie Maxwell, 18

KENNEBUNKPORT - Ruthie Maxwell, 18, a resident of Kennebunkport, died July 4, 2003 at the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth, Lebanon, N.H., surrounded by her family.

Her tremendous courage and spirit inspired all of her beloved family, friends and caregivers.

She is survived by her devoted parents Marcy and Jeff, and loving brothers Alex, Ian and Will all of Kennebunkport; her aunts and uncles include Bob and Pat Morden of Kittery Point, Maine, Rob and Brenda McAleer of Harpswell, Ed and Nancy McAleer of Kennebunkport, and Gary and Melinda Maxwell of Jacksonville, Fla.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

A Funeral Mass to honor her life will be celebrated at St. Martha Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk on Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

Her family kindly request that memorial donations be made to David's House or The Chewonki Foundation. David's House, 461 Mt. Support Rd., PO Box 660, Lebanon, NH 03766-0660, is a supportive home for families to live in while their children are receiving medical treatment at Dartmouth Medical Center. The Chewonki Foundation, 485 Chewonki Neck Rd., Wiscasset, ME 04578, supports the camp that has provided the Maxwell children with many happy memories.

Noreen Jameyson, 56

KENNEBUNK - Noreen (Ditata) Jameyson, 56, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away July 7, 2003 at her home.

A native of Livermore Falls, Maine, she moved to Fernandina Beach in January of 2002 from Kennebunk, where she resided 23 years. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Portland and a graduate of Westbrook Junior College. Upon graduation she went to work in the purchasing department of the International Paper Company in Jay. Following that, she worked for Joseph Iriana, DDS in Kennebunk, as a receptionist / secretary for the next 10 years. She then went to work for UNUM -Provident Insurance Company in Portland as a customer service representative. She loved gardening, flowers, walking, reading, playing golf with the ladies on Tuesday at the Golf Club of North Hampton, and above all, loved and cherished her family. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Fernandina Beach. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Baker in l984.

Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Gale W. Jameyson of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; one son John N. (Sandra) Jameyson of Durham, N.C.; one daughter Lori Jameyson (Paul) Lyons of Bidderford; one brother Michael J. (Rita) Ditata of Jay; one grandson Nicholas James Lyons; one step-granddaughter Hannah Marie Lyons; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Rev. Father Brian Eburn, Pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Bosque-Bello Cemetery.

Sheila Sandvoss, 68

KENNEBUNK - Sheila (Van Alstyne) Sandvoss, 68, of Chickadee Lane, Kennebunk, died July 4, 2003 at her home peacefully.

She was born in London, England to George and Lily Reeve, she grew up in London until her family moved to Windsor, Ontario, Canada in the late 1940s. She was accepted into the Royal Theatre and later worked for the Alcan Company as a secretary.

She lived briefly in Japan, Hong Kong, and Montreal and before settling in Westchester County, New York State.

One of her proudest moments was when she became an American Citizen on March 25, 1965.

In 1975, she moved to Goose Rocks Beach and she and her husband became the owners of the Kennebunk Dry Cleaning / Laundromat. She accomplished a lot with her life. Entering the real estate business where she attained top seller many times and practiced most recently for the Downing Agency.

She was a talented quilter and an avid reader, a member of the Real Readers Book Club, a known traveler, seeing such countries as Bermuda, Greece, Germany, England, France, Switzerland, and Austria. Family was important part of her life.

She leaves behind one daughter Dana Sandvoss James and her husband William James of Jefferson, Mass.; two sons, Mark Van Alstyne of New York City, and Christopher and his wife Patricia Van Alstyne of Duxbury, Mass.; mother in law, Elizabeth Sandvoss of Kennebunk; three granddaughters, Caitlin, Leland and Sydney Van Alstyne of Duxbury, Mass.; two sisters, Beatty Fletcher of Boston, England and Joan Johnson of Essex, Ontario, Canada, and her beloved best friend Elsbeth Sandvoss of Kennebunk,

Visiting hours are to be held from 3 to 4 with a 4 p.m. service today at the Dennett-Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco. Private family burial at Kensico cemetery in Valhala, N.Y.

Robert Scribner, 75

KENNEBUNKPORT - Robert Joy Scribner, 75, a resident of Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport, died unexpectedly at Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford on July 2, 2003.

He was born in Dover, N.H. on May 1, 1928, a son of George and Dorothy (Sweat) Scribner and graduated from Gov. Dummer Academy in 1945. He continued his education at Boston University and graduated in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree in business. In 1952-1954 he served in the Korean War at West Point, N.Y. In 1954 he joined the Andover Companies in Andover, Mass. and enjoyed a long and successful career retiring as executive vice president, underwriting secretary in 1991. He also served as president of New England Mutual Insurance Association and was a member of the board of directors at the Andover Bank for 25 years.

While in retirement, he was an active member of the Cape Arundel Golf Club and the Arundel Yacht in Kennebunkport. He also enjoyed extensive travel throughout Europe and the United States as well as golfing, gardening and boating along the coast of Maine.

He was a devoted husband to Eleanor for nearly 54 years and a loving father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of Kennebunkport; three children, Susan Jaccoma and her husband Edward of Arundel, Robert and his wife Claire of Kennebunkport, and Joy Wallingford and her husband Brian of Lebanon; one brother and sister-in-law George and Annette Scribner of Kennebunk; and five grandchildren, Brooke and AJ Jaccoma both of Arundel, Samuel Scribner of Kennebunkport, Christopher and William Kellett both of Lebanon.

A memorial service is planned for Friday at 11 a.m. at the South Congregational Church, Temple Street Kennebunkport, with the Rev. Charles Whiston officiating.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, please make a donations in his name to Southern Maine Medical Center, 1 Medical Center Dr., Biddeford, ME 04005.

Doris Budner, 71

KENNEBUNKPORT - Doris (Albert) Budner, 71, passed away on June 18, 2003 after a year-and-a-half long battle with cancer, which she faced with her customary grace and dignity.

She was born in San Antonio, Texas, and moved to Dallas at age 5, where she lived the rest of her 71 years.

She attended Highland Park High School and Southern Methodist University. On Dec. 26, 1950, she married Lawrence H. Budner, to whom she was happily married for 52 years. She raised three sons, and had seven grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Lawrence; son Bruce and one daughter Maria, and their children, Brooke, Allison and Kevin, son Keith and daughter Elizabeth, and their children Keith Jr. and Lawrence Lee, and son Craig and daughter Dawn, and their children William and Benjamin; two brothers and sister-in-law Richard and Ruth Albert; and brother and sister-in-law David and Ginette Albert.

In addition to being a loving mother and grandmother, she contributed mightily to her community. She cofounded and served as the first president of the Dallas Jewish Coalition for the Homeless, which in 1986 opened the doors to the Vogel Alcove Child Care Center for the Homeless. Since that time, the Alcove has helped thousands of homeless families, without regard to race, religion, or ethnicity, by providing daycare for their young children so that the parents could find work and regain control of their lives.

In 2002, the Alcove’s building was named in her and her husband Larry’s honor. In addition to her devotion to the Alcove, which continued through the time of her death, she served in a leadership role on more than 30 community boards including United Way, Success By Six; Child and Family Guidance Centers; Family Gateway; Open Arms (Bryan’s House); North Texas Food Bank, and many other worthy causes. Though she never sought accolades or attention for herself, she was featured in the High Profile section of the Dallas Morning News on April 29, 2001, and she received numerous prestigious awards including the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award (1989), Foleys / Dallas Morning News Savvy Award (1995), and the National Association of Social Workers’ Public Citizen of the Year Award (1999). Just hours before she passed away, she was honored for the second time by the Dallas City Council for her many contributions to the homeless.

She devoted herself to making the world a better place. She will not be forgotten by the many people whose lives she touched. May she finally have her own peace.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Vogel Alcove Child Care Center, c/o Dallas Jewish Coalition for the Homeless, 7557 Rambler Rd., Suite 262, Dallas, TX 75231.

Services were held Friday in the Main Sanctuary at Temple Emanu-El, followed by burial service at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery.

Barbara DeMallie

A celebration of the life of Barbara Cooke DeMallie, who died in Kennebunk on Jan. 3, 2003, will be held at the South Congregational Church, Kennebunkport, on Thursday July 3, at 10 a.m. Friends are cordially invited to attend.

Eleanor Metcalf

A graveside memorial service for Eleanor E. Metcalf, who died Feb. 16, 2003, will be held Friday at 4 p.m. in the Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick. Rev. Robert G. Cole will officiate.

Donald Miller, 71

BIDDEFORD - Donald G. Miller, 71, of Biddeford, formerly of East Derry, N.H., died June 19, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 8, 1931 in Melrose, Mass., a son of Edward and Dorothy (Russell) Miller.

He was a successful business owner. His life passions were his soul mate, watching his children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild grow and mature through their life’s accomplishments and defeats. Other passions include gardening, computer, model railroads and life in the details.

He was loved, will be missed and hopefully, may he never lose his pride. We love you, the Family.

Graveside services were held in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk Tuesday with the Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating.
