Troy Lusty, 101

YORK - Troy Lois K. (Smith) Lusty, 101, of Beechwood Apartments Burdett Avenue, died July 21, 2003 at her residence.

Born in Troy, she was daughter of the late Dr. Frederick Adams and Daisy (Pease) Smith and wife of Alson Leland Lusty. She had resided in Troy all her life, formerly on Tibbits Avenue and was a graduate of Emma Willard School and Smith College.

She was manager for the former Sim & Company in Troy for five years. Her father was one of the founders of the old Samaritan Hospital on Eighth Street in Troy.

She was a member of the Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary, Van Rensselaer Garden Club, Rensselaer County Historical Society, the Thursday Morning Club, the Country Club of Troy, the Archeological Institute of America and a charter member of the Junior League of Troy. She was a world traveler, a lecturer and a long-time member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Troy.

Survivors include one son, David Leland Lusty (Harriette) of York; four grandsons, Paul S. Lusty (Stephanie) of Portland, Eric Lusty (Carol) of York, Philip Lusty (Anne) of York, and John Lusty (Kim) of Merrimac, Mass.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister Eleanor deForest and a niece, Peggy Sim Stott.

A memorial service was held at the Eddy Memorial Chapel on Burdett Avenue Troy with Rev. Alexandra Lusak, Pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church of Troy, officiating.

Doris Martel, 84

KENNEBUNK - Doris H. (LaFrance) Martel, 84, of Kennebunk, died Aug. 6, 2003 at York Hospital, York after a brief illness.

Born in Manchester, N.H. on Jan. 16, 1919, she was the daughter of Arthur and Alice (Demers) LaFrance. She lived in Manchester, N.H. most of her life, then Bedford, N.H. before moving to Kennebunk three years ago.

She worked at J.F. McElwain Shoe Company in Manchester, N.H. for many years.

She was married to Joseph W.A. Martel who died in 1995.

The family includes two sons, Richard W. Martel of Wytheville, Va. and Paul A. Martel of Wells; two daughters, Constance Briggs of No. Berwick and Gloria Asselin of York Beach; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Alfred LaFrance of Manchester, N.H.; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday at St. Pius X Church, Manchester, N.H. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Manchester.

Barbara Merrill, 66

OGUNQUIT - Barbara A. Merrill, 66, resident of the Stearns Road, Ogunquit, died Aug. 20, 2003 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H. after a lengthy illness She was the widow of Carl Merrill who died Oct. 3, 1998.

She was born in Bethel, Maine, a daughter of Walter and Norma (Rolfe) Jodrey. She attended Bethel schools and graduated from Gould Academy. She was a well-known business women in Ogunquit and the proprietor of the Norseman Inc. a well known tourist Resort in Ogunquit. She enjoyed the game of golf and was a member of the York Country Club, The Cape Neddick Golf Club and the Indian River Golf Plantation in Florida. She was a member of the Southern Maine Women's Golf Association. During the winter months she resided in Stuart, Fla.

She is survived by one son Scott C. Merrill and his wife Danielle of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Martha Sheckells and her husband Mark of Stuart, Fla., and Mrs. Lorna Wentzell and her husband Mark of Ogunquit; four grandchildren, Jack Merrill, Mollie Doucette and her husband Dan, Hunter Sheckells and Abbie Sheckells; two great-grandchildren, MacKenzie Doucette and Izaiah Doucette; and one brother Arlan Jodrey.

A celebration of her life was held Monday from the Ogunquit Baptist Church with the Rev. David Clark officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Bethel, at a later date.

Janie Bintliff, 63

FREEPORT - Hyo Chin Bintliff, 63, a resident of Old Country Road, Freeport formerly of Kennebunk, died Aug. 19, 2003 at the Hawthorne House, Freeport after a long illness.

She was born in Seoul, Korea on April 5, 1940. She attended schools there.

She met her late husband Russell Bintliff in the Vietnam War and she came to the United States and raised two sons Roger and Mark while her husband was involved with his military career. After her husband's retirement, they moved to Kennebunk in 1992. After his death in 1993, she moved to Cumberland to be near her family.

She enjoyed decorating design and cooking.

She was predeceased by her husband Russell L. Bintliff.

She is survived by her two sons, Roger T. Bintilff of Cumberland and Mark L Bintliff of Greenville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and six sisters, all from Korea.

Private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Maurice Brown, 78

WEST KENNEBUNK - Maurice L. Brown, 78, a resident of Briarwood Lane, West Kennebunk, died Aug. 23, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center Biddeford after a brief illness.

He was born in West Kennebunk on Feb. 12, 1925, a son of Walter Dexter and Olive M. (Paul) Brown. He attended Kennebunk schools. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

He was a road foreman for Griffin Construction of Portsmouth, N.H. for 35 years, retiring in 1987.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Wilfred O. Brown, Walter A. Brown, William Brown, Ernest Brown and his sister Esther Brown.

He is survived by three sons, Maurice D. Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo., Donald M. Brown of Alfred, and Walter (Billy) D. Brown of Standish; two daughters, Donna Lee Berthiaume of Alfred and Muriel Debbie (Tremblay) Hale of Tenn.; two brothers, Clarence Brown of Virginia, and H. Chester Brown of Alfred; four sisters, Edith V. Brown of Sanford, Evelyn M. Brown, Regina A. Brown and Betty Lou Dyer, all of West Kennebunk; and 12 grandchildren.

Graveside service were held Wednesday at the Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk with Rev. Armand Neault officiating.

Robert Pierce, 77

WELLS - Robert (Bob) Warren Pierce, 77, resident of Sanford Road, Wells died Aug. 24, 2003 at York Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Christine (Mitchell) Pierce.

He was born in Wells March 26, 1926, a son of Erman E. and Mildred E. (Hilton) Pierce. He attended Wells schools and graduated from Wells High School. He was employed at the Maine Department of Transportation in the North Berwick office. He retired in 1985 with more than 35 years of service. He was a member of Ocean Lodge of Masons.

He was pre-deceased by a son Randy Pierce in 1968.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Christine M. Pierce; two nieces; one nephew; and one cousin.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells. Interment was in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Charles Seaman, 73

OGUNQUIT/YORK - Charles Littlefield Seaman, 73, of Ogunquit, died peacefully at his home with his loved ones on Aug. 20, 2003.

He was born in Melrose, Mass., son of Charles D. and Elsie (Littlefield) Seaman and attended local schools.

He had several vocations including antiques and collectibles. He wrote three books about Ogunquit. They were "Pictorial History of Ogunquit 1870-1950," "Ogunquit in Pictures and Words 1900-1971," and his latest was a pictorial postcard book. He was a member of the Maine Historical Society, Maine Genealogical Society, York Historical Society, Brownfield Historical Society, Wells / Ogunquit Historical Society, Stratford County (N.H.) Genealogical Society and Charlotte County (Fla.) Genealogical Society. He was past president of the Ancient Landmark Society of Parsonsfield and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Portland Maine Cutterman's Association, Past Master of Ocean Lodge of Wells, Past Patron of Priscilla Chapter of the Easter Star, and various other organizations. He was a radioman stationed on the USCGC Barataria in Portland from 1949-1952.

His second wife Dorothy died previously.

He is survived by two daughters, Allison Zurlo of Ogunquit, and Meredith Baker of Portland, Ore.; one grandson Wyatt Littlefield Baker, also of Portland, Ore.; his father of Safety Harbor, Fla.; three sisters, Elaine Fowlie of Safety Harbor, Diane Fornauf of Melrose, Mass. and Ogunquit, and Bette Gore of Atkinson, N.H.

There will be no funeral services. Private committal service will be in the family lot, Locust Grove Cemetery, Ogunquit at the convenience of the family.

Caroline Young, 46

PORTLAND - Caroline "Candy" Hugo Young, 46, of Portland, died unexpectedly at her home, Aug. 23, 2003. Candy, as she was known to her family and friends, dedicated much of her life to bettering the lives of children. She focused most of her love and attention on kids with special needs.

Born Sept. 22, 1956, in Exeter, N.H., she was the daughter of Caroline (Colwell) Conley and Allan J. Hugo. She was raised in York and graduated from York High School in 1975. She attended the University of Maine and graduated in 1979 with a degree in education.

Her love for children led her to a career in teaching elementary school children. She spent most of her teaching career in Maine and touched the lives of many children in the Portland area.

She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Reuel Young; her mother Caroline C. Conley of Portland; four brothers, William Coyne of Londonderry, N.H., Mark Hugo of Newport, R.I., Brett Hugo of York, and L. Joseph Colwell of Ridgefield, Conn.; many nieces, nephews, and grandnephews who will miss their birthday and holiday cards each year.

She is predeceased by two younger brothers, H. Scott Hugo in August 1992 and Allan "Max" Hugo in November 1992.

A memorial service will be held at today 11 a.m. at the Lucas Eaton Funeral Home in York. A celebration of her life will follow at the American Legion Hall located on Long Sands Road, York.

Gwendolyn Chadbourne, 68

NORTH BERWICK - Gwendolyn M. Chadbourne, 68, longtime resident of North Berwick and resident of Prescott Heights Apartment, died peacefully the morning of Sept. 18, 2003 at York Hospital.

She was born in Cape Porpoise Sept. 26, 1934, the daughter of Wendell P. and Charlotte Mabel (Bracy) Cluff Sr. and attended local schools. She graduated from Kennebunk High School with the class of 1953. She and her siblings would "borrow" a skiff and row out to Goat Island. She loved being around the pier and watching the "locals" bring in their catch.

She was a talented and gifted musician. She played accordion and piano from an early age. She played her first dance with her father, "Rap" Cluff at the Atlantic Hall when she was 17 years of age. From there, she played at several of the hotels in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Wells. She substituted as organist on many occasions at the Acton Congregational Church. She played with "Uncle Fud and the Haybinders" and later with the "Generation Gap" entertaining people at fund-raisers and dances. She looked forward to visiting her daughter, Tammy in Newport, N.H. and playing for the Newport Senior Center.

She worked on the Maine Turnpike, Exit 3 in her teen years and met and married Floyd J. Chadbourne Aug. 5, 1957. He predeceased her in 1988. In 1960, they made their home in North Berwick. She worked locally in the mills and the Value House Warehouse. For many years, she was a shift manager at the 7-Eleven Store in Springvale before she retired. She was a driver for the North Berwick Rescue Squad when the squad first began.

She enjoyed line dancing, board games and going out with the "girls" for bingo. An avid reader, she loved reading mystery novels, especially P.D. James. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her giving nature and being a Nana to her grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, David A. Cluff of Los Angeles, Calif., John S. Chadbourne of Wells, and Jonathan A. Welch of Kennebunk; three daughters, Tammy L. Chadbourne of Springvale, and formerly of Newport, N.H., Sandy M. Goodale of Wells Branch and Kelly L. McGuire of Sanford; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother David M. Cluff of Arundel and Naples, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Wendell P. Cluff of Cape Porpoise and John Wayne Cluff of Kennebunkport.

Funeral services were held on Sunday at the Heald Funeral Home with Sr. Kathleen Haight, RCD, officiating. Burial will be later at the Arundel cemetery in Kennebunkport.

Jean Coulson, 86

NORTHBORO - Jean R. (Butman) Coulson, 86, formerly of 78 Washburn St., died Sept. 16, 2003 at home in Wells after a battle with cancer.

She leaves her husband of 45 years, Ernest A. Coulson; three sons, David A. Coulson and Glen H. Coulson of Northboro and Wayne A. Coulson of Charlton; one daughter, Alta L. Coulson of Northboro; six grandchildren; four sisters, Louise M. McCarthy of Hopkins, Minn., Maris A. Gray of Shrewsbury, Leah A. Kimball of Ellenswood, Ga. and Rita A. Burman of Wells; and nieces and nephews.

Born in Marlboro, daughter of Charles A. and Bernice (Asquith) Butman, she lived 62 years in Northboro before moving to Wells in 1998.

She enjoyed knitting, puzzles, crosswords, reading, making stone walls and the outdoors.

The funeral was held Saturday at the Hays Funeral Home, Northboro. Burial followed in Howard St. Cemetery, Northboro.

Merrill Crosby, 43

ELIOT - Merrill R. Crosby, 43, of Park Street in Eliot, died tragically on Sept. 20, 2003 on Route 4 in Durham, the result of an automobile accident.

He was born on May 24, 1960, in Lynn, Mass., to the late Carl and Merrilyn (Peterson) Crosby.

He moved with his family at an early age to Eliot, where he was raised and attended schools including Marshwood High School.

He began his life with his loving wife Anita (Searles) Crosby 20 years ago, and together have raised a wonderful family including their daughter Amanda and sons Benjamin and Jacob.

His family will remember among so many things, his love for them and being the best cheerleader for his children, while watching them at their sporting events, He enjoyed antique automobiles and auto shows as well as motorcycles. His ability to fix anything gained him the title of "MacGyver." He enjoyed being out of doors, camping with his family and enjoying their boat.

A hard worker who always did his best for everyone, he will be remembered by his friends as the last one to leave a party and someone who always tried to make things better. He enjoyed a good whoopie pie, rock music and going to the races, and trips to the casino.

He is survived by his loving family, his wife Anita (Sarles) Crosby; one daughter Amanda; two sons, Benjamin and Jacob Crosby; one brother Carl and his wife Loria Crosby of Portsmouth; three sisters, Cathy and her husband David Vetter of South Berwick, Debbie and her husband David Tobey of Grand Lake Stream, Maine, and Joni and her husband Bill Landry of Lee, N.H.; aunts and uncles, Kathy and Alan Peterson of Lynn, Mass., aunts Louise and Esther Leary of Dover, N.H., George and Alice Crosby of Florida, Doreen Crosby of Peabody, Mass., Ronnie and Rose Peterson of Florida; his mother-in-law Barbara Gauthier of Eliot; brother-in-law Keith and his wife Toni Searles of Eliot; sister-in-law Pam Theobald and her husband Rick of Buffalo, N.Y., and brother-in-law David and his wife Margaret Searles of Marshfield, Mass; nieces, nephews and cousins; and his dog Buddy and cat "Ollie.

A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Eliot, with the Rev. Dr. David Avery officiating.
