William Allen, 52

YORK - William F. Allen, 52, of Sanford and formerly of York, Maine and Newton, Mass., died Nov. 13, 2003 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford following a brief illness.

He was born in Newton, Mass., on May 11, 1951, a son of the late Franklin R. and Florence (Dennis) Allen.

He spent most of his adult life in the York area and for many years, working and pursuing his love of painting.

He is survived by his mother, Florence Allen of Waltham, Mass.; three sisters, Barbara Mazzola of Waltham, Sandra Noonan and her husband, Joseph of Gloucester and Judith Parsons and her husband David of Marshfield, Mass.; and also many nieces and nephews.

Following cremation, Interment was at the Newton cemetery in Newton, Mass., on Monday.

The family requests that donations be made in his name to the Discovery House, 400 Western Ave., South Portland, ME 04106.

Marion Andrews, 91

ELIOT - Marion W. Andrews, 91, of Cedar Road in Eliot, died on Nov. 22, 2003 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, following a period of failing health.

Born in Berwick on Dec. 7, 1911, she was the daughter of Walter L. and Lena (Fall) Whitaker, she attended local schools graduating from Berwick High School with the class of 1929. She furthered her education at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital where she received her nurses training, graduating in 1933 with her degree as a registered nurse.

For many years she was employed by Dr. Lester R. Whitaker, a surgeon in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was a member of the Eliot Fireside group and the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital Alumni Association.

Her first love was her family, her beloved husband Norman A. Andrews and her loving children. She will be fondly remembered as a loving wife mother and caregiver to many.

She will be missed by those who knew and loved her; one son Richard L. Andrews of Eliot; two brothers, Ellsworth and his wife Ethel Whitaker of Reading, Mass., and Kenneth and his wife Betty Whitaker of Old Orchard; two sisters-in-law, Alice and Marjorie Whitaker; one step-granddaughter Paula Lavallee of Wells; two step-great-grand daughters, Michelle and Dawn; and her cousin Carolyn Fall, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Norman A. Andrews, her son Clark "Whimp" Andrews and her brothers Raymond, Wilbur and Roland Whitaker. Her family will remain grateful to her caregivers that she so dearly loved Bonnie, Barb and Pat and whom, by their care allowed her to remain in her home.

A funeral was held on Tuesday at the First Congregational Church of Eliot on State Road. Burial followed in Evergreen cemetery in Berwick.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Alice Chapman, 88

MILLBURY, Mass. - Alice G. (Belisle) Chapman, 88, of 3 Laurel Dr., formerly of Northbridge, Mass., died on Nov. 22, 2003 in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, Worcester, Mass., after a long illness.

Her husband of 51 years, Edward L. Chapman, died in 1995.

She leaves two daughters, Alice M. McDonald of Pottsboro, Texas and Beverly L. Steele of Wells; one son, Daniel E. Chapman of Millbury; two sisters, Simone St. Gelais and Lucienne Bernier, both of Woonsocket, R.I.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Eileen L. Ingle of North Scituate, R.I. also died in 1995.

She was born in Woonsocket on Nov. 29, 1914, a daughter of the late Camille and Marianne (Belhumeur) Belisle, and lived there until she moved to Millbury in 1957. She then lived for 12 years in Northbridge before returning to Millbury in 1998.

She was a homemaker who was an excellent cook, an expert seamstress, and a wonderful mother to her children. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Parish, Whitinsville, Mass. and a former member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Parish here.

The funeral was held Tuesday from the Turgeon Funeral Home, with a funeral Mass in Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. After cremation, burial of her ashes were in St. Patrick Cemetery, Whitinsville.

Joseph Knight, 88

ARUNDEL - Joseph Archer Knight, 88, a resident of Sinnott Road, Arundel died Nov. 19, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. He was the husband of Beverly (Hall) Knight.

He was born in Arundel, Sept. 24, 1915, a son of Archer B. and Margie (Morrill) Knight. He attended Arundel schools and graduated from Kennebunkport High School. He was a Veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army and received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal along with his Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist engineer for more than 33 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, tending his wood lot and being a rock hound in collecting stones. He was a 50-year member of Arundel Lodge of Masons and served as Master of the Lodge in 1954. A 50-year member of Murray Chapter, Maine Council and St. Amand Commandery, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Portland and a member of the Maine Consistory 32nd degree Valley of Portland.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Beverly Hall Knight of Arundel; one sister-in-law Mrs. Ruth Knight of Kennebunk; one cousin, Charlotte Potter of New Hampshire.

A Masonic service was held Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. Funeral service was Saturday at the chapel. Interment was in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Peter Sargent, 60

BERWICK - Peter A. Sargent, 60, a resident of School Street, Berwick, formerly of Kennebunk died unexpectedly Nov. 22, 2003 in Vernon, Conn. He was the husband of Susan (Jakins) Sargent.

He was born in Biddeford, a son of Frank Willard and Madeline (Towne) Sargent. He graduated from Kennebunk High School, was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in Vietnam and a member of the Seabees, in the U.S. Navy Reserves. For the past 34 years he was a resident of Berwick. He was employed at the General Electric Company in Somersworth, N.H. as a maintenance engineer from 1966 until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of the Berwick Fire Department. He enjoyed woodworking and going fishing.

He is predeceased by his father Frank in 1947 and his brother David M. in 1971.

He is survived by his mother Madeline Sargent of Kennebunk; his wife of 37 years, Susan Jakins Sargent of Berwick; two daughters, Stefanie Dillon of Thompson Station, Tenn. and Jennifer A. Giardino, Somersworth, N.H.; one sister Mrs. Donald (Elizabeth) Gendron of Kennebunk; and three nieces.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with Rev. Laurent Laplante officiating. Interment in Arundel Cemetery. Kennebunkport.

Eunice Thompson, 91

DOVER, N.H. - Eunice L. Thompson, 91, of 13 Roosevelt Ave., died Nov. 17, 2003 at Hattie Ide Chaffee Home in Rhode Island. She had spent much time in recent years with friends in Barrington, R.I.

She was born Feb. 14, 1912, the daughter of the late Frank A. and Alta (Perkins) Thompson of Dover.

A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, she taught in Vermont, North Berwick, Maine and Connecticut before moving to Malden, Mass. where she taught in junior high for many years. After her retirement, she worked at the Dover Public Library and did volunteer work at the Horne Street School in Dover. More recently, she volunteered at the Lung Association in Rhode Island.

She was a longtime member of the First Parish Church, Congregational of Dover and was an active participant in prior years. For many years the Thompson family spent summers at Wells Beach and she continued to do so through 2002.

She is survived by three nephews, Ronald, Gregory and Rand Thompson.

She was predeceased by a brother, Russell Thompson of Dover.

Funeral services were held Friday at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, Dover, N.H. with the Rev. David L. Slater officiating. Burial took place Friday in the Woodlawn Cemetery, North Berwick.

Doris MacGregor, 90

WELLS - Doris M. Kearley MacGregor, 90, who was retired, died Nov. 18, 2003 in Tallahassee, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Episcopal Church, 17 Clark St., Belmont, Mass. with visitation Friday at Brown's Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Rd., Belmont, Mass. from 7-9 p.m., with burial at Woodlawn cemetery in Everett, Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308, or North Shore Animal League of America, 25 Davis Ave., Port Washington, NY 11050.

She was born on Nov. 27, 1912, in Boston. She was the owner / operator of MacGregor Telephone Answering Service in Boston, which she managed for more than 20 years. Among the hundreds of her clients nationwide, many were members of the Boston Wool Trade, which honored her at her retirement in 1984. She also was of Tallahassee, Fla. She was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Tallahassee.

She was gifted in creative crafts and participated in local craft fairs with her numerous handmade floral arrangements, clothing and decorative seasonal items. Her sweet spirit and beautiful smile were a constant source of joy. Her kindness, compassion and generosity touched the life of everyone with whom she came in contact, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. If you were privileged to know her, her family asks that you celebrate her life.

She is survived by a loving daughter, Bonnie M. Canada of Tallahassee; one grandson, Robert D. Canada Jr. of Lake Worth; three nieces; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death in 1986 by her husband of 50 years, John Leroy MacGregor.

Robin Manteuffel, 40

KITTERY - Robin Joy Manteuffel, 40, of Bousch Street in Kittery, died suddenly, on Nov. 22, 2003 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in York on April 20, 1963, she was a daughter of Daniel and the late Phoebe (Grant) Manteuffel, growing up she spent time in Newington and Kittery schools, graduating from Portsmouth High School with the class of 1981.

A lifelong resident of the seacoast she settled in Kittery, where she has raised her family and enjoyed many wonderful friends. Her kindness and warmth coupled with her ability to share her feelings and allow others to do the same without being judgmental, has allowed her to form many long lasting and valued friendships.

She was a talented artist, enjoying sketching, painting and working with porcelain and with acrylic paints; she also enjoyed working with pottery. Her love of the out of doors led her on many camping excursions. She enjoyed her gardens, decorating them with her art and other sculptures she had collected. She enjoyed her many pets; her cats and toy fox terriers.

She is survived by those who knew and loved her; her father Daniel Manteuffel of Amesbury, Mass.; her daughters Stacey Manteuffel of Kittery, Stephanie Rice of South Carolina and Amy Guyette of Vt., and her son Tony Rice of South Carolina; one grandson Jaycobe Manteuffel; one brother Daniel and his wife Tina Manteuffel of Rochester N.H.; one half brother Tim and his wife Cheryl Rowell of Somersworth; one half sister Laurie Rowell of New Jersey; her maternal grandfather Paul Grant of Kittery Point; her paternal grandmother Lois Manteuffel of Alabama.

She was predeceased by her mother Phoebe Grant and her brother David Manteuffel.

A funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery, ME 03904. Friends may visit with Robin's family on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dr. Robert Collins, 90

KENNEBUNK - Dr. Robert Shattuck Collins, 90, lately of Kennebunk, died on Sept. 24, 2003.

He was a dentist with the U.S. Navy for 30 years, retiring in 1972. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Over the years he was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas; El Cajon, San Diego, and San Francisco, Calif.; Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands; Quantico, Va.; and Bethesda and Bainbridge, Md. He was serving on the U.S.S. Boxer, an aircraft carrier, in 1955 when he attained the rank of Captain. In his last years with the Navy, he established and ran a charitable dental clinic for civilians in Bainbridge, Md.

He retired in North East, Md., where he lived for 36 years before moving to Kennebunk. In North East, he served as treasurer on the board of his neighborhood association, volunteered at St. Mary Ann's Episcopal Church, and enjoyed maintaining and touring with antique cars.

He was born on Feb. 13, 1913, in Indianapolis, Ind., and grew up in Owosso, Mich. He graduated from Michigan State University and the Dental College of Northwestern University. He was married for 46 years to Margaret Maddy of Oskaloosa, Iowa, who predeceased him in 1984.

Three daughters, Ann Yamrus of Cameron, N.C., Jane Reinhardt of Huntington, N.Y., and Margaret Robin Kleinrock of Springvale; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren survive him.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Huntington Common and Bradford Court for making their father's last years very pleasant and comfortable. Beacon Hospice provided wonderful transition care.

A memorial service will be held in North East, Maryland, at St. Mary Ann's Church on Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.

Animals and his pets were always very important to him. Any remembrances may be directed to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or any local animal shelter.

Jean Coulson, 66

NORTHBORO - Jean R. (Butman) Coulson, 66, formerly of 78 Washburn St., died Sept. 16, 2003 at home in Wells after a battle with cancer.

She leaves her husband of 45 years, Ernest A. Coulson; three sons, David A. Coulson and Glen H. Coulson of Northboro and Wayne A. Coulson of Charlton; one daughter, Alta L. Coulson of Northboro; six grandchildren; four sisters, Louise M. McCarthy of Hopkins, Minn., Marie A. Gray of Shrewsbury, Leah A. Kimball of Ellenswood, Ga. and Rita A. Butman of Wells; and nieces and nephews.

Born in Marlboro, daughter of Charles A. and Bernice (Asquith) Butman, she lived 62 years in Northboro before moving to Wells in 1998.

She enjoyed knitting, puzzles, crosswords, reading, making stone walls and the outdoors.

The funeral was held Saturday at the Hays Funeral Home, Northboro. Burial followed in Howard St. Cemetery, Northboro.

Robert Dowling, 55

BAR HARBOR - Robert Jeffrey Dowling, 55, of Bar Harbor, passed away at Maine Medical Center in Portland on Aug. 28, 2003, following a brief illness.

He was born on Feb. 6, 1948, in Rockville Centre, N.Y., the son of Robert J. and Betty B. Dowling. He lived on Long Island and in Connecticut during his early childhood. The family moved to Dover, Mass. in 1960.

For many years, he worked in the family's retail businesses as manager of gift stores, Pine and Print Inc., in Boston and Wellesley, Mass., and Ogunquit, and a specialty mail order business, Viennese Operetta Records Inc. He was also a dealer in vintage cameras.

He was a talented photographer, writer, and musician. Many of his photographs and articles were published in photography magazines. He loved

opera, hiking and boating on the Maine coast, and was an avid reader.

He is survived by his parents, Robert J. and Betty B. Dowling of Newton, Mass.; two sons, Robert F. Dowling of Medford, Mass., and Rolla T. Dowling of Wells; one sister, Cathy Dowling Norton of Newton, Mass.; three nephews and one niece.

A private memorial service for family members will be held in Newton, Mass. His ashes were scattered on Mount Desert Island.
