Helen Dunwoody, 82

KENNEBUNK - Helen B. Dunwoody, 82, a resident of Wiggins Pond Lane, Kennebunk died Sept. 22, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after brief illness.

She was born in Dorchester, Mass. on Jan. 19, 1921, a daughter of Walter and Camille (Paszkiewicz) Pansewicz and attended local schools there.

She was a homemaker for most of her life. She lived in Greenwich, R.I. for many years before moving to Kennebunk in 1989.

She was avid golfer where she was a former member of the Greenwich Country Club and the Dutch Elm Golf Club of Arundel where she played in the women's league.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years Calvin Dunwoody of Kennebunk; three sons, Peter Dunwoody of Denver, Colo., Steven Dunwoody of Falmouth, and Donald Dunwoody of East Greenwich, R.I.; one daughter Janet Dunwoody of Bellingham, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Per her request there will be no services.

Kirkland Gourley, 77

KENNEBUNKPORT - Kirkland S. Gourley, 77, a resident of Ocean Avenue died Sept. 16, 2003 at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Lowell, Mass. on Sept. 21, 1925, a son of Robert L. Gourley and Margaret Gourley. He graduated from Lowell High School (Mass.) and Ricker College in Houlton. He was in sales with the R.L. Gourley Corporation of Wellesley, Mass. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II in the 10th Mountain Division, 85th Service Group and served in Italy. He trained at Camp Hale, Colo., and Camp Swif, Texas. He enjoyed boating, gardening and flying airplanes.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Betty (Hyde) Gourley of Kennebunk; his mother, Margaret (Doherty) Gourley of Wellesley, Mass.; two sons, Robert Gourley of Newport, N.H. and Kirland Gourley of Brewster, N.Y.; two daughters, Deborah Violette of Warner, N.H. and Margaret Gourley of Gloucester, Mass.; three step-sons, Robert Reidy of Worcester, Mass., James Reidy of Somers, Conn., and Steven Reidy of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and 12 grandchildren.

A private service was held on Sept. 20, 2003.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society-Maine Affiliation, 1 Main St., Topsham, ME 04086-1246 in Mr. Gourley's memory.

Charles Kelley III, 72

CAPE PORPOISE - Charles Elliott Kelley III, 72, a resident of Cape Porpoise, formerly of Walpole, Mass., passed away peacefully, Sept. 28, 2003 at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., the son of Charles Elliott Kelley Jr. and Esther M. (Kelley) Haverty. He graduated from Tilton Academy, Tilton, N.H. and Boston University in Boston, Mass. He served his country proudly in the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.

He was the former owner of the Wrentham Insurance Agency in Wrentham, Mass. for 32 years before becoming a self-employed lobsterman in Cape Porpoise.

He was a 44-year member and past master of the Azure Lodge of Walpole, Mass., Chaplain of the Arundel Lodge 76 and member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Kennebunkport. He was a member of the Maine Lobsterman's Association and the American Legion of Kennebunkport and was a member and trustee of the First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport.

A beloved son, devoted husband and caring father and friend, he was a trusted participant in many church and lodge activities. Through his selflessness and charity, he served as a mentor and inspiration to his family, church constituents and fellow lodge members.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eunice (Lilley) Kelley of Cape Porpoise; his mother, Esther of Kennebunk; four sons, Stephen E. of Sheldonville, Mass., Charles C. of Scarborough, Jonathan S. of Buxton, and Richard M. of Scarborough; two daughters, Sharon E. (Kelley) Carleton of Needham, Mass., and Elizabeth M. Kelley of Cape Porpoise; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Masonic Service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church, North Street, Kennebunkport, followed by a Memorial Service with the Rev. Bonnie Steinroeder officiating. Interment will be in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Kelley's memory to the First Congregational Church, 141 North St., Kennebunkport, ME 04046.

Peter Kelsey, 60

ELIOT - Peter W. Kelsey, 60, of Beech Road in Eliot, died Sept. 29, 2003 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Machias, Maine on May 29, 1943, he was a son of Leon and Marie (Lowe) Kelsey and attended local schools, graduating from Jonesboro High School.

Following high school, he was accepted into the apprenticeship program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, he worked at the shipyard for a number of years in shop No. 38 as an outside machinist, then as a General Foreman in Nuclear Inspections until his retirement.

In 1979 he met and married his loving wife of 24 years, Rachel (Caron) Kelsey and made their home in Eliot, raising their family.

He will be remembered as a strong man of few words, who would help anyone in need. He was involved in a number of activities, he enjoyed, mixed league and men's bowling leagues at Bowl USA in Newington, golfing, and watching about any sport including, being an avid Red Sox fan, as well as NASCAR racing and local racing at Beech Ridge Raceway.

He always enjoyed building anything from wood, from school desks for his children to a fancy hutch, or anything that was made of wood, he could build it, and people would admire it.

His greatest love however was his family; his grandchildren played a big part in filling his heart with the joy only grandchildren can bring. He enjoyed time spent fishing with his grandson Aaron at "Spikey Back Pond," and just sitting reading with any of his grandchildren on his lap. He also enjoyed a large vegetable garden every year in the backyard, spending time caring for it and watching his vegetables grow, so that they may be shared with many friends and family.

He is survived by his loving wife Rachel (Caron) Kelsey of Eliot; two daughters, Joni and her husband Doug Fallon of Eliot and Carol Howard of Eliot; two sons, Joel Lehman of Hollywood, Fla., and Jared Lehman of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren, Christina Fallon, Nichole Procaccini, Alison Procaccini, Aaron Howard, and Joanna Howard; one brother Webster and his wife Marilyn Kelsey of Kittery; and son-in-law and friend Craig Howard.

He was predeceased by his son David Kelsey and his brother Aaron Kelsey.

A funeral will be held today at his church, the First Congregational Church of Eliot at 11 a.m., with a time of refreshment and sharing to follow in the church fellowship hall.

Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the Wentworth Homecare and Hospice, 113 New Rochester Rd., Suite 4, Dover, NH 03820.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Phyllis Leavitt, 85

ELIOT - Phyllis L. Leavitt, 85, of Goodwin Road in Eliot, died on Sept. 29, 2003 at Langdon Place in Dover, N.H., following a period of declining health.

Born in Eliot on Aug. 16, 1918, she was a daughter of Fred R. and Martha L. (Kramer) Leavitt. She attended local schools graduating from Eliot High School.

She was employed for many years at Westwind Gardens in Somersworth, N.H. working in the greenhouse, planting and caring for the plants as well as arranging flowers. She also provided in-home care for a number of people in their homes in Eliot and the surrounding area.

She was an active member of her church, the Eliot United Methodist Church. She was a tireless worker in the thrift shop, the faith circle and hope circle. She was also a member of the Eliot Historical Society and the secret pal club of Brixham and Goodwin Roads in Eliot.

She will be missed by her loving family. They include three sisters, Ruth Richards of Eliot, Dorothy Blaisdell of Eliot, and Sylvia MacKay of Eliot; three brothers, Lyndon Leavitt of Eliot, Norman Leavitt of Madison, Maine and Robert Leavitt of Eliot; many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers Wilfred, Laurence and Richard.

A funeral service will be held at her church, the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot, today at 3 p.m. No visiting hours, family flowers only please. Donations may be made in her memory to her church.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery, ME 03904.

Evelyn Linehan, 75

WELLS - Evelyn L. Linehan, 75, a resident of Drakes Island, Wells, died after a courageous battle against lung cancer, Sept. 24, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born in South Boston, Mass. on Aug. 30, 1928, a daughter of John and Mary (Reiss) McGrath. After attending Boston schools she and her husband, John settled in West Roxbury before deciding to move to Maine.

She was a gifted artist who enjoyed painting. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed the beaches and traveling.

She was predeceased by a sister, Claire Poole.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, John J. Linehan; two daughters, Beverly LeConte and her husband Michael of Westbrook, and Jeanne Cote and her husband Roger of South Berwick; one sister Marion Gorham of Brunswick; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral Mass was held Saturday at St. Mary's Church, Wells with Father Joseph Ford presiding.

Bruce Hale, 67

IRVINE, Calif. - Bruce Hale, 67, of Irvine, Calif., formerly of York died Sept. 19, 2003 in Irvine, Calif.

Born on Nov. 2, 1935, he was a son of Herman and Phebe (Burrows) Hale.

He was raised in York and graduated from York High School, before moving to California in 1959, where he owned and operated a plastics manufacturing company.

He is survived by his wife Willa Kay Hale of Irvine, Calif.; one daughter Dawn Meeks and her husband Douglas of Irvine, Calif.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dana Hale of Eliot and Allen Hale of Kittery Point.

Funeral services are private.

Local arrangements are submitted by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Dorothy Morissette

KENNEBUNK - Dorothy Ellen Morissette, a resident of Bradford Court at Huntington Common died on Sept. 24, 2003 at Bradford Court in Kennebunk.

She was born on April 25, 1916 in Portland, Ore., the daughter of William Henry and Eva (Morris) Adams. She attended Portland (Oregon) schools. She was the first woman in her family to graduate from college, graduating from the University of Oregon in Eugene in 1937. After graduation, she moved to Boston to attend Simmons College School of Social Work where she received her master's degree in social work in 1939. She was always adventurous and loved to travel.

Her first job after graduate school was at Yale / New Haven Hospital as a medical social worker. She met her husband Russell Morissette there while he was in medical school at Yale. After he finished his training and served in Japan during World War II, they settled in Auburn in 1949 and he set up pediatric practice in Lewiston.

She was the mother of four children. She enjoyed her children and was a good mother. A resident of Lewiston-Auburn for 46 years she was a tireless volunteer and community service worker. She was instrumental in getting a Head Start program started in Lewiston and Auburn. Her interest in handicapped children led her to volunteer work on several boards. In 1975, those boards merged to become Pathways Inc. She was a part of the American Association of University Women's Doorways to the Future, a job-shadowing program for eighth-graders in Lewiston and Auburn. She helped to establish Androsscogin Home Health Program in Lewiston.

She also held several social work positions, including consultant for the Crippled Children's Services at the Department of Human Services in Augusta, and Child and Family Services in Lewiston. She set up the Social Work Department at St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston and worked there as director of social work for 20 years.

In 1997 she moved to Kennebunk to be close to her daughter.

She is pre-deceased by her sons, Russell and David; her husband Dr. Russell Morissette.

She is survived by one brother, Dr. Raymond Adams of Brookline, Mass.: daughter and son-in-law Beth and Dennis Anderson of Kennebunk, and daughter and son-in-law Claire and Jim Hinkle of Golden, Colo.; three grandsons, Jason Spaulding, Tim Hinkle and Matt Anderson; three granddaughters, Heidi Hahn Tymkew, Tami Hahn Musfeldt, and Heather Hahn Schneider; and one great-grandson, Kyle James Tymkew.

A Wake was held at First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church in Kennebunk on Sunday.

William Rix, 92

ELIOT - William Miller Rix, 92, of Beech Road in Eliot, died on Sept. 27, 2003 at Sentry Hill in York Harbor.

Born on May 10, 1911 in Limestone, Maine, he was the son of John and Minnie (Carney) Rix, and attended local schools.

In 1933, he met and married his loving wife of 70 years, Pauline C. (Webster) Rix. Together they made their home first in Wales Corner, Maine then for a number of years in Green, Maine. In the '40s they moved to the seacoast area, settling in Eliot where they continued to raise their family.

He was employed for more than 20 years at the Sprague Energy terminal in Newington, as a driver. He also worked on road construction at the Pease Air Force Base, while it was being built.

He had a strong love for nature, the woods, and animals. His love of the out of doors brought him often to the Belgrade lakes for family camping and boating trips. He particularly loved his time spent on the Allagash wilderness water way, he often enjoyed fishing and camping trips with his son Billy, and son in law Ben. Moose Head lake was a favorite spot as well as Telos landing, whether camping in his camper with his wife or in a tent with many of his camping friends, he was at home with the lake and nature.

Closer to home he often enjoyed trips out on his boat to the Isles of Shoals for a day of saltwater fishing, or a trip into the woods with his chain saw and woods truck or tractor to prepare wood for the winter. He enjoyed gardening, often having fresh vegetables well into winter from his root cellar. After a day of working in the woods, garden, his shop, or just on a hot day, he would hop on his motorcycle and take a ride to cool off.

His love of animals was easily recognizable, by the trip home with a few hundred baby chicks, left in the kitchen until they could be moved, or a dozen or so ducks for his pond that he worked so hard to build. He was rarely without the company of a dog or two, he especially enjoyed his dogs Coquette, Benjie and Fawn, along with others. His love of animals strongly guided him as the State Humane Agent for many years, traveling throughout Maine investigating and protecting the welfare of domestic and farm animals.

He was a man of strong personal faith and determination, he played the piano by ear and enjoyed many of the traditional hymns. He was affiliated with the Eliot Baptist Church. He often enjoyed trips to Florida to see his children and grand children, and was proud of their many accomplishments.

His first love was his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, of 70 years, Pauline C. (Webster) Rix of Eliot; seven children, daughters, Faye and her husband Ben Hunter of Eliot and Northport, Fla., Judy Sargent of Napa Valley, Calif., and Donna and her husband David Bridgeham of North Hampton, N.H.; four sons; William Rix of Clearwater, Fla., John Rix of Northport, Fla., Paul and his wife Leslie Rix of Exeter, N.H., and Jeffrey Rix of Leesburg, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, due to join the family soon.

Funeral service will be private.

Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the Eliot Baptist Church, 328 HL Dow Highway, Eliot, ME 03903.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Elizabeth Thompson, 81

KENNEBUNK - Elizabeth (Etta) Thompson, 81, of North Conway, N.H. and Temple Street, Kennebunkport, died Aug. 23, 2003 at the Kennebunk Nursing Home after a long illness.

She was born in North Conway, N.H., a daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth Hunt and attended schools there, graduating from Kennett High School in 1941.

She married Fred Thompson June 26, 1957 and they lived in New Hampshire until moving to Kennebunkport.

She loved flying and took many lessons. After her husband's death in 1982, she started what would become a renowned stuffed animal collection.

She is survived by many loving cousins and dear friends who will miss her dry humor and her kind, gentle way.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen cemetery on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Charles Whiston officiating.
