James Lank, 76

KENNEBUNK - James B. Lank, 76, a resident of the Emmons Road, Kennebunk died Oct. 4, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Joann Labrador Lank.

Mr. Lank was born Sept. 30, 1927 in Waterville, a son of Arthur and Helen (Stevens) Lank.

For over 35 years he owned and operated his sawmill and lumber business, with his son Robert, at the Lank Farm on the Ross Road.

He took great pride in his growing Christmas tree Farm. It was a passion and an interest which sustained him even in his last days. For over 20 years he could often be found working alongside of his wife Joann at their Christmas wreath business on the Emmons Road. He always looked forward to cutting trees and talking with old customers during this time of year. He had boundless energy and drive.

He would always gather princess pine at Christmas for his wife Joann. And in the spring pussey willows and always wild flowers in the summer. He always found joy in life. No matter how small or how big the circumstance.

He was a fighter. Strong willed and full of drive and determination. He tried everything and was not afraid to fail. He succeeded at most everything he set out to do. He never let his illness get the best of him. He held out hope until the very end. Often he could be found trimming up Christmas trees, his chainsaw roaring away. Or driving his logging truck up to the sawmill where he continued to work as long as his body allowed. When asked to slow down he would say I can't, I enjoy what I'm doing.

He was raised in Kennebunk on his family farm where he acquired his great love of animals. He left school during World War II and joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a boilermaker on the USS Wasp in the South Pacific.

In the early 1950s he enjoyed stock car racing. He had a great love for the outdoors. Riding his ATV, hunting, fishing, collecting fiddleheads. He enjoyed it all. He loved playing cards and especially looked forward to his Tuesday night card games. He was an avid reader and could easily read a book a day no matter what the subject. He was a man of few words and yet he loved his wife and family dearly. We in return loved and admired him.

One of his greatest gifts to his family was his strength and determination. We always could depend on him. As Jim would say, "You've got to know when to hold them and know when to fold them." He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years; four sons, Delvern Lank of Arundel, Kevin Lank of Kennebunk, Robert Edward Lank of Kennebunk, and Phillip Albert Lank of Arundel; two daughters, Stephanie Lank Richards of Alfred, and Barbara Lynn Lank Boisvert of Biddeford; one brother Arthur B. Lank Jr. (Buddy) of Kennebunk; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk at 2 p.m. today with the Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating the service. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Maine Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086 in Mr. Lank's memory.

Linda Garland, 54

KENNEBUNKPORT - Linda (Patterson) Garland was born on Feb. 26, 1949 in Bainbridge, Ga. She passed away peacefully after a sudden stroke on Sept. 29, 2003.

She was the second child of J.D. and Roslyn Patterson, who owned a farm outside of Bainbridge. She attended the local schools in Bainbridge and enjoyed spending time with her large family. An avid reader, she drove around the "Bookmobile" in the summers, offering library books to the community.

Her interest in books brought her to minor in library science and major in elementary education at Georgia College. It was at Georgia College where she went on a blind date with her future husband, Terry. They wed three-and-a-half years later in March of 1971.

Her husband had summered at Goose Rocks Beach as a child and was therefore drawn to Kennebunkport. The couple moved here in 1973. A true southerner, it was a different world for Linda in the cold north, but one she grew to love and cherish. Goose Rocks Beach quickly became her most favorite place.

She was born to be a teacher, committed to making a difference in the lives of children. She taught in the Kennebunk area before teaching first grade at Mildred L. Day School in Arundel for 16 years. After a stint with substitute teaching, she found further pleasure in assisting children with special needs. She found teaching to be extremely rewarding.

She and her husband had two children, Jinny in 1978 and Todd in 1981. She was a committed and loving Mother and would leave the housework waiting any day to spend time with her children. She particularly enjoyed the summers, when she would spend the days at Goose Rocks Beach with her children, exploring tidal pools, collecting shells and building sand castles. On the weekends, the family would go on boating excursions, may times exploring the marsh and picking marsh heather.

She was an active member at the Church on the Cape. She enjoyed being a part of the prayer chain, Bible study and various other groups. She had a strong sense of faith that carried her through two successful bouts with cancer and was extremely proud to be an 18-year survivor. She was a true miracle in the medical world.

She was an extremely loving, kind and generous person. She was never a complainer and always had a very positive view on life despite her struggles. She lived each day to the fullest. She will be sorely missed by many.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur (Terry) Garland of 32 years; one daughter Jinny Garland Sass of New Castle, N.H.; one son Todd Garland of Cape Porpoise; one brother James Patterson of Marietta, Ga.; one sister Cathy Smith of Bainbridge, Ga.; and many family members and friends.

WELLS - William C. Barry of Blackberry Lane, Wells passed away Oct. 5, 2003 after a brief but extremely well-fought battle against cancer.

He was born a beloved son of Fredrick K. Barry and C. Maxine Barry in Bangor on May 21, 1958. He grew up in Bangor on Center Street and attended local Bangor schools until high school, when he moved to Brewer, and graduated from Brewer High School. After graduation in 1976, he attended Maine Maritime Academy in Castine graduating in 1980.

He was employed until the time of his passing at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard as a health physicist. He received many awards for his outstanding work and was often recognized for his great work ethic. He was a fair and moral man who applied his sense of fair play whenever he was presented a difficult situation.

He was an unassuming man who was loved and respected by his friends, family and co-workers. He will be remembered for his quiet humor and his ability to endear himself to the hearts of all who met him. He was full of life and fun loving. He was well respected and loved by his peers His office mates made daily "group" calls to him during his illness, which was a tremendous source of joy and support.

He was a devout Catholic and was a member of the St. Mary's Parish family; he was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Ellen and a compassionate and loving father to his sons William Jr. and Joseph. He loved and cared for his wife and children above all other things. He was a true family man who chose time with his family above time for personal hobbies. He was comforted during his illness to see the outpouring for love and support that he, his wife and children received from both their church community and from the community of Wells. He would tell his wife how it eased his mind to hear the phone ring and know it would be still another outpouring of love.

He loved sports and was a notorious Chicago Cubs Fan. He excelled in softball and was a pitching legend for many years for the Rad Con Rangers in the Portsmouth Navel Ship Yard softball league. He achieved a golfer's greatest accomplishment when he sunk a hole in one on June 13, 1999 while golfing with his oldest son.
