Buena Vista Funeral Home, Cemeteries, Mausoleums, and Crematory. Dignity Memorial Provider.

Ernest Spencer Tomlinson, 3-2-1929 to 9-3-2003

He was a big man and he lived big. He was a man's man, serving in the U.S. Navy; as a Federal Marshal during the Civil Rights era, for which he received a presidential commendation; and Border Patrolman for the U.S. Dept. of Justice, patrolling the borders by vehicle, canoe and horseback. Although he faithfully carried out his duties in this latter work, he maintained his compassion and respect for the immigrants he apprehended. As he often said, they were just trying to earn a living and support their families, something we all would attempt under the same circumstances.

He had a penchant for horses early on, which manifested itself later as a horse trader, even after retirement when he continued to break and ride them, and broke his collar bone in a fall at the age of 70. He built a camp in Maine single-handedly, bathing and washing his clothes in the Kenduskeag River.

He was larger than life. I have written that he was a man's man, and that is true, but he was also a woman's man: unfailingly complimentary, charismatic, and oh so handsome - he never lost his looks or his charm.

Born in Maine, he returned there on several occasions - to Calais, to Coburn Gore, and to Kennebunk, his home town, but he needed space to stretch himself, and it was to the Big Sky country of Texas that he returned for good.

He was ill for a long time, but it didn't stop him from living life his way. He refused dialysis and hospitalization and had long become disenchanted with doctors. He never lost his sense of humor. When the elders of the local Mexican church visited him during a particularly bad period of pain to hold an impromptu prayer service, and a laying on of hands, he submitted to it gracefully, announcing at its conclusion. "Refreshments will be served!"

A native son of the Northeast, he found his true home in the dry dust border town of Brownsville, Texas, choosing to live among the Mexican Americans with whom he had become so familiar and respectful in his work, and as one fluent and comfortable in the Spanish language and culture. He was a legend in his own time.

He was a big man and he had a big family. In his final days, he was surrounded by all of them: devoted wife, sister, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We climbed into bed with him, telling stories, laughing and crying, reminiscing, hugging and kissing and telling him of our love. He looked straight at me and said with a wry smile, "Where is thy sting?" knowing I would understand. He was a big man - in every way - one of a kind, and he was my brother.
