Madeline Grant, 86

KITTERY - Madeline E. Grant, 86, of 143 Rogers Rd., Meeting House Village, formerly a long-time resident of York, died Sept. 7, 2003 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born and raised on the family farm in Patten, Maine, she was a daughter of Bradbury and Lena (Grant) Beattie.

In 1936 she met and married her loving husband of more than 53 years Edward Grant of York.

After their marriage they made their home in York and raised their family. She, with her husband were the caretakers of the Elizabeth Perkins Estate in York, as well as a number of other historical sites, enjoyed by many over the years. They cared for the old school, the tavern and the Reed House. She set up displays and ensured everything was in working order for those who visited.

She was also a private cook for a number of families in York over the years. She was a member and past president of the York County Extension Services, and sold Avon for a number of years as well.

She and her family attended the First Parish Church in York while her family was growing up, she was a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Portsmouth and most recently attended the Christian Worship Center in Barrington, N.H.

After her husband died in 1990 she spent one year in Florida with her sister before moving to Meeting House Village in Kittery, where she enjoyed the friendship and company of the many friends she made there. A wonderful mom and grandmother she thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent with her grand- and great-grandchildren.

She will be missed by those who knew and loved her. They include her family, two daughters, Elaine and her husband Raymond Gaudette of Phillips, Maine and Constance and her husband Raymond Hysler of Eliot; four grandchildren, Glenn Gaudette, Erich Hysler, Tina Thibeau and Mark Hysler; seven great-grandchildren, Joel Thibeau Jr., Benjamin Gaudette, Jonathan Thibeau, Ashley Thibeau, Andrea Thibeau, Michael Quintel and Riley Hysler; and two sisters, Louella Wilcox of Florida and Clara Mayo of Sherman Mills, Maine.

A funeral was held Wednesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-140800.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Clarence Kimball

OGUNQUIT - An informal memorial gathering and celebration of the life of Clarence "Bud" Kimball will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday Sept. 24 at the Old Village Inn, Ogunquit.

Donald Messier, 82

KENNEBUNK - Donald O. Messier, 82, (formerly of Hamden, Conn.) peacefully passed away on Sept. 3, 2003 surrounded by his family.

After a long battle with Alzheimer's disease, he is survived by his wife Joan of 53 years; four daughters, Mini Walsh of Kennebunkport, Kathy Nutter of Kennebunk, Sue Zukoff of Wallingford, Conn. and Renee Messier of Biddeford; one son, Don Messier of Kennebunk; six grandsons, Neil and Brenden Messier of Kennebunk, James and Rob Nutter of Kennebunk and Mak and Rory Zukoff, of Wallingford, Conn.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel at Huntington Common, Ross Road, Kennebunk.

Memorial donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, 300 Roundwood La., Scarborough, ME 04074 or the National Alzheimer's Association.

Bernice Shoby, 81

KENNEBUNKPORT - Bernice Helene (Lecchi) Shoby, 81, of 3 Temple St., and Litchfield Road, Watertown, Conn., died Sept. 3, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a long illness. She was the wife of Frank Shoby.

She was born Oct. 16, 1921 in Torrington, Conn., a daughter of the late Frank and Helen (Kovach) Lecchi and lived in Maine for the past 33 years. She was a graduate of Newfield Grammar School, Torrington High School class of 1938 and St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing class of 1942. She was affiliated with St. Mary's and Waterbury Hospital where she worked as a maternity and pediatric supervisor. She enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II and served for two years as a First Lieutenant. She was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Watertown, Conn. and St. Martha Church in Kennebunkport. She and her husband owned and operated the Dock Square Inn in Kennebunkport. She was well known for her famous breakfasts.

Besides her husband of Maine she leaves one daughter Kymara Curtis Lonergan, R.N. of Staten Island, N.Y. and Kennebunkport; one son David B. Shoby of Freeport; three grandchildren, Amanda Curtis, Skye Marley Lonergan, and Jennifer Shoby; one brother Frank S. Lecchi of Oakville, Conn.; one sister Mrs. Frank (Mary) Ohotnicky of Goshen, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Monday from the O'Neill Funeral Home, to St. John the Evangelist Church for Mass. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to March of Dimes, 155 Founders Plaza, East Hartford, CT 06108.

Jonathan Day, 18

YORK - Jonathan Harley Day, 18, of York Beach, died Sept. 6, 2003 at Maine Medical Center, Portland, after a period of failing health.

Without words his eyes told his story. His smile warmed the hearts of many...

He was born in Dover, N.H. June 8, 1985. He attended Village Elementary School, York Middle School and York High School. He loved people, music and balloons. The quality of his life was enhanced with the aid of many caring individuals in his community. He was a strong and brave young man, faced with many tribulations throughout his life. He was loved and will be missed by many.

Family members include his mother Roxanne O'Donnell of York Beach; his father Karl Day of Eliot; his stepfather Ken O'Donnell of York Beach; his stepmother Sandy Day of Eliot; one brother Matthew Day; one sister Rebecca Day; his maternal grandmother Marcelle Chabot; his paternal grandmother Vera Day; one step-sister Carolynn O'Donnell; one stepbrother Scott O'Donnell; aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother Michael Day, his grandfathers, Harley Day and Ronald Chabot.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday in the Tasker Funeral Home, Dover, N.H. with the Rev. Thomas Coover, Pastor, Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Somersworth officiating. Burial followed in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials be made to the Jonathan Harley Day Memorial Foundation, c/o Donegal Town Inc., 42 Brickyard Ct., York, ME 03909.

Andrew G. Rintala, 62

KENNEBUNK - Andrew G. Rintala, 62, a resident of Spiller Drive, Kennebunk died Sept. 13, 2003, after a brief illness.

He was born in Westfield, Mass. on May 21, 1941, a son of Jalo Andrew and Ethel (Yefko) Rintala. He graduated from Westfield High School and Western New England College in Massachusetts.

He was an engineer at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of East Hartford, Conn. before moving his family to Kennebunk in 1986 where he also worked at the Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick, Maine. He retired after 36 years in service.

He was a member of the Dutch Elm Golf Club of Arundel, and on the board of the directors of the Kennebunk Fish and Game Club. He served as an officer for the Pratt & Whitney Ski Club for many years.

He was an avid fisherman as well as bow hunter and golfer. He was a loyal family man providing loving care to an extended family

He was predeceased by his father and a sister Elizabeth "Betty" Benson.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Rhonda Hutchins of Kennebunk; his mother, Ethel Rintala of Westfield, Mass.; one son Craig Rintala and his wife Charity of Fergus Falls, Minn.; two daughters, Cara Rintala of Ludlow, Mass. and Jessalynn Rintala of Kennebunk; three grandchildren; and his nieces and nephew, Bonnie Scrivener, Beth Hassett and Brian Benson, all of Suffield, Conn.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church, Broad Street, Westfield, Mass., with the Rev. Steven Harvester officiating. Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Chester, Mass.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Pine Hill cemetery Fund, c/o Pine Hill Cemetery, Court Road, Chester, MA 01085, in Mr. Rintala's memory.

Robert Schaub, 90

BIDDEFORD - Robert H. Schaub, 90, a resident of Fortunes Rocks, Biddeford, died at his home Sept. 15, 2003.

He was born June 13, 1913 in Utica, N.Y., the elder son of Henry Charles and Katherine (Arheilger) Schaub. He attended schools in Utica, N.Y. after which he earned his degree in engineering in 1935 from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y. There he was scholastically honored with election to membership in the Society of the Sigma XI.

Upon passing the examination by the state of New York, he was granted his license to practice professional engineering with a similar grant later by the state of Maine. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

His career began as associate city engineer in Utica, N.Y., where he was responsible for both the design and construction of a wide scope of projects. With the possibility of World War II, he correlated the records in the city engineer's files with those of all the local utilities in the event of any emergency.

When World War II was declared, the War Production Board opened a district office in Utica, serving 11 counties. He became manager of its Production Division. Here, with his staff, all types of facilities were assisted in the conversion to military requirements production.

After the war, he established the Robert H. Schaub and Associates, in which he provided consulting services as a professional engineer. Later, the firm also became the representatives of electrical power equipment. This required a broad association with other consulting engineering firms and the engineering department of original equipment manufacturers.

In Utica, he was twice elected president of the Mohawk Chapter of the R.P.I. Alumni. In 1947, he became a member of the Oriental-Faxton Lodge F.&A.M. No. 224 and a member of the Utica Kiwanis Club. In 1950, he organized the Whitestown Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church.

In 1975, he retired to the home he and his wife built, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at Fortunes Rocks, Biddeford. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading and lots of golf, playing many games with his wife, as members of the Abenakee Club in Biddeford Pool. Winter months were spent with good friends on Anastasia Island on Florida's East coast.

He was president of the Fortunes Rocks Association in 1979, and treasurer of St. Phillips-by-the-Sea Chapel for 10 years, during which his wife arranged for the alter flowers.

He and his wife, Helen, were about to celebrate 60 years of marriage, when she lost a long brave battle with cancer on Jan. 12, 1998.

He lost his only brother, Lt. Henry Stewart Schaub, while flying B-17 bombers over Germany in World War II.

He is survived by one daughter Wende C. Manickas of Lexington, Mass.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A prayer service was held Wednesday at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Janet Hryniewicz, pastor of the Union Church in Biddeford Pool.

A prayer service will be held at the Heintz Funeral Home Friday from 10-11 a.m. at 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, N.Y. His Interment will be the last of the family to be buried in the family plot at the New Forest cemetery in Utica, N.Y.

Memorial remembrances may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, c/o Marion B. Case, 375 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02215-5347 in Mr. Schaub's memory.

Robert Schremmer, 54

SOUTH BERWICK - Robert J. Schremmer, 54, of Beaver Dam Road in South Berwick, died suddenly Sept. 15, 2003.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Jan. 27, 2003 he was one of nine children to Robert J. and Josephine (Khrofsky) Schremmer.

He graduated from Canevin High School with the class of 1959. He furthered his education at the University of Southern California with a MBA and went on to receive a master's in public administration from Indiana State University.

He came to the seacoast area in 1969 to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he continued to be employed as a nuclear facilities manager.

In 1985 he met and married his loving wife of 18 years Patty (Lyman) Schremmer, they moved to Eliot where they raised a family, moving to South Berwick in 2002.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed running. He was active in Scouting, serving as assistant Cub master in Eliot and a Cub and Boy Scout leader. He also served his community as a member of the Eliot Zoning Board of Appeals.

His first love was his family who will miss him dearly. He leaves behind his loving wife Patty (Lyman) Schremmer; one daughter Molly Schremmer; one son Nicholas Schremmer; his mother Josephine (Khrofsky) Schremmer; three brothers, Rich Schremmer of Nashville, Tenn., Jim Schremmer and his wife Rhonda of Nashville, Tenn., and Larry Schremmer and his wife Meriam, of Atlanta, Ga.; five sisters, Betsy Cothron and her husband James of Nashville, Tenn., Jayne Martin and her husband Gerald of Savannah, Ga., Judy Perkins of Nashville, Tenn., Jackie Schremmer of Atlanta, Ga., and Suzy Siegenthaler and her husband Robert of Nashville, Tenn.; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Parish Federated Church in South Berwick. Friends may visit with his family on Friday evening from 6-8 at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery, ME 03904. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the Robert J. Schremmer Memorial Fund, C/O Kennebunk Savings Bank, PO Box 118, Eliot, ME 03903-0118, to benefit his children's education.

Conrad Smith, 76

SWEET HOME, Ore. - Conrad S. Smith, 76, of Sweet Home, Oregon, died at Corvallis Good Samaritan Hospital on Aug. 22, 2003.

He was born on June 11, 1927 in Saco, Maine, the youngest child of former mayor of Saco, John G. Smith and Harriet (Whitney) Smith.

He lived in Maine until age 20 when he moved to San Jose, Calif., where he attended college. On May 6, 1978 he married Martha Banderson in Los Angeles.

He was predeceased by his brothers Richard of Berkley, Calif., Robert of South Paris, Maine, John of Kennebunk, Norman of Providence, R.I., and Donald of Kennebunk and a sister Billie Arlene of Glen Falls, N.Y.

He moved to Los Angeles and worked as a traffic manager for a seafood company until he retired in 1992. He dealt with imports and exports from all over the world.

He moved to Oregon in 1992 and lived in Woodburn from 1993 until moving to Sweet Home two years ago.

He collected die cast cars, trucks and gas haulers. He also collected Big Band records.

He is survived by his wife Martha of Sweet Home; one daughter Cora Mack of Gervais; two sons, Kenneth Stidham of North Carolina and Christopher Stidham of Florida; three grandchildren; two brothers, Royal W. Smith of Kennebunk and Freeland K. Smith of Kennebunkport; one sister Frances Street of Oakland, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, c/o Workman and Steckly Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long St., Sweet Home, OR 97386.

Irving Wilcox, 70

KENNEBUNKPORT - Irving S. Wilcox, 70, longtime Kennebunkport resident and area businessman died at his home Sept. 8, 2003.

He was born Oct. 10, 1932 in Waterbury, Conn., the youngest of three children of Percy W. and Grace (McKnight) Wilcox. He graduated from Leavenworth High School in Waterbury in 1950 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, serving as a photographer's mate on the USS Valley Forge and the Currituck. He married Judy Root in 1955, and they settled in Kennebunkport following his Navy discharge.

After the war, he worked in office equipment and service for Jon Milligan in Kennebunk, then later began a lifelong career in the garment industry throughout New England. In 1972 he opened his own clothing store, "Shirts N' Things" in Kennebunk, eventually expanding his business into a total of 13 stores throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He retired in 1993.

During his military service, he played baseball for a U.S. Navy team, and after his discharge he organized and pitched for the Kennebunkport Braves, a semi-pro team in the Great Bay League. He remained active in baseball, coaching area Little League teams for several years. An avid aviation buff, he flew small aircraft and remained actively interested in aviation all his life. He and his family have maintained camps on Big Lake for several generations, where his interest in historic watercraft included restoration and reproduction of an antique powered canoe that has been prominently featured in boat shows throughout the area.

He was a member of the Arundel Yacht Club, served on the Kennebunkport School Board, was a trustee and deacon of South Congregational Church, served on the Kennebunkport Recreation Commission, was a member of Arundel Lodge of Masons and founder of the Lafayette DeMolay chapter, and sang with the Yankeeland Barbershop Chorus, a chapter of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy Root Wilcox; three children, Stephen and wife Debbie of Kingsland, Ga., Linda Crawford and husband Scott of Greeley, Colo., and Scott and wife Robbie of Wells; one sister Polly Wookey of Princeton, Maine; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Friday at South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport.

Should friends desire memorial gifts may be made to the American Diabetes Society, Maine Affiliate, PO Box 2208 Augusta, ME 04330 in memory of Irving S. Wilcox, or to a charity of one's choice.
