Irene Wilson, 88

KITTERY - Irene B. Wilson, 88, of Norton Road in Kittery, died Sept. 8, 2003 at York Hospital following a period of declining health.

She was born on Sept. 24, 1914, in Somersworth, N.H. and was a daughter of Napolean and Matilda (Couture) Breton and attended local schools.

A wonderful wife, mother and sister, she enjoyed collecting stuffed animals, and rosaries, as well as sitting and enjoying the beach and reading. She also had a particular fondness toward nature and animals. She will be remembered for her love of family and the many Sunday dinners she enjoyed preparing.

She was a communicant of St. Raphael Parish Church in Kittery and truly enjoyed the church family that was so important to her and her family for many years.

She is survived by one son Ronald Lamontagne of Kittery; two sisters, Rachel Breton of Somersworth, N.H., and Cora Lessard of Methuen, Mass.; many nieces and nephews; as well as her dear friends, Mel and Mary Delcourt and Gene and Dolly Goodwin.

She was predeceased in 1971 by her husband, Alphonse Lamontagne and her loving husband Norman F. Wilson in 2000, as well as a sister Louise LeBlanc whom she was very close to.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at her church, St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery on Friday.

Family flowers only, donations may be made in her memory to her church.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Sharon Beatham, 59

ALFRED - Sharon Lee Ann Beatham, 59, of Pine Lane Drive, Alfred, formerly of Kennebunk, died Sept. 13, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a short illness.

She was born in Farmington, Maine, the daughter of Leo and Eleanor (Wheeler) Campbell. She graduated from Farmington High School and Burdett College in Boston. She worked for Delta Airline in the reservation department for several years.

She loved gardening, writing, traveling and especially spending time in Boston.

Surviving are her mother Eleanor (Wheeler) Campbell of Farmington; her husband and companion Fred Beatham of Alfred; one son Adam Beatham of South Berwick; one daughter Kristin Beatham of San Diego, Calif.; one brother Paul Campbell of Winslow; three sisters, Marie Lucarelli of Jay, Fran Scott of Durham, and Patricia Volkernick of Largo, Fla.

A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk with the Rev. Father Laurent Laplante officiating.

Warren Allen Jr., 79

ELIOT - Warren H. Allen Jr., 79, of Riverview Drive in Eliot, died on Aug. 9, 2003 at York Hospital, following a two-year battle with cancer.

Born in Rye, N.H. on Aug. 24, 1924, he was the son of Warren H. Sr. and Clover A. (Gould) Allen. He graduated from Portsmouth High School with the class of 1942. He went on to further his education from the University of New Hampshire with a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1948.

He served his country in World War II, as a B-17 pilot in the United States Army Air Force, flying out of England over Germany. He was assigned to the 322 Bomb Squadron, 91st Bombardment Group. After his military service he was employed as a senior engineer working on the development of the Ram Jet with Wright Aeronautical Corp. in Woodbridge, N.J. In 1959 he moved to the seacoast where he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pioneer in Quality Control and Assurance, first as a design engineer and later as the head of Engineering and Design Department, retiring in 1984.

He also served as a member and vice chairman of the Eliot Planning Board from 1975 until 1984, where he worked to establish three-acre building lots and other town regulations. He wintered in Bradenton, Fla. He had a wicked good slice in tennis. He also enjoyed entertaining people with his piano and organ music over the years, and was a great cribbage player.

He is survived by his loving wife of nine years, Thelma (Lowell) Allen of Eliot; two daughters, Bonnie (Allen) Pease and her husband Brian of Oakdale, Conn., and Linda Shapleigh of Hermon, Maine; six grandchildren, Nathan, Lindsay, and Tom Allen, and Aubrey, Cory and Krystal Roukey; and one sister Marion Berry and her husband Stanley of Sarasota, Fla.

He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Geraldine (Shapleigh) Allen, a son Bradley H. Allen, and his sister Sue (Allen) Sullivan.

Services will be private.

Donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30329, or to York Hospital, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Kenneth Durning, 65

KENNEBUNK - Kenneth J. Durning, 65, a resident of Forest Lane, Kennebunk formerly of Westboro, Mass., died unexpectedly Sept. 10, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Queens, N.Y., the son of Kenneth John and Julene (Ward) Durning. He graduated from a Catholic high school in Staten Island, N.Y., he attended two years at Cornell University and was a Vietnam War veteran in the 91st Airborne Division of the US Army. He married Jean Nash on Oct. 25, 1986.

He was a sales rep. for the R.L. Schriber Company in this area. He also worked for the Sisters of St. Joseph Fontbonne Hall in Framingham, Mass. for several years and most recently worked as bar manager at the Elks Lodge in Sanford.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Westboro, Mass. and the Sanford Elks Lodge. He loved baseball and played Minor League, he was an avid fan of the New York Mets.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Jean Nash Durning; three daughters, Kathy Foster of Newton, Mass., Julie McCarthy and husband Robert of Billerica, Mass., and Gail Rowen of Chelmsford, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial Mass was held Saturday at St. Martha Catholic Church, Kennebunk with the Rev. Father Laurent Laplante officiating.

Should friends desire memorial donation may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1246 in Kenneth's memory.

Steven Goeddeke, 34

GREENLAND - Steven R. Goeddeke, 34, of 51 Portsmouth Ave. in Greenland, died suddenly on July 15, 2003 in Hollis.

Born in Boston, Mass. on Nov. 16, 1968, he was the son of Janet (Lambrechts) and the late Joseph Goeddeke. He grew up in Greenland and attended local schools, graduating in 1987 from Portsmouth High School. He attended St. James Church with his family while growing up.

He was an active athlete at Portsmouth High School, as member of the football, soccer, and basketball teams. Most recently he enjoyed skiing and golf.

He was self employed as a painting contractor.

He is survived by his loving twin daughters, whom he adored, Amanda Rose and Samantha Lynn; his mother Janet Goeddeke of Greenland and her significant other Albert Ferrin Jr. of York; one brother Brian and his wife Kelly Goeddeke of Greenland; his Aunt Dorothy Gall and Uncle Richard and his wife Marge Lambrechts of Michigan, as well as a number of cousins.

Graveside services will held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Prospect Hill cemetery in Greenland, N.H. Donations may be made in his memory to the St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge on Long Sands Road in York.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Pearl R. McBride, 90

KENNEBUNK - Pearl R. McBride, 90, of Mayflower Place, Sanford, died Sept. 15, 2003 at Kennebunk Nursing Center, after a short illness.

She was born in Newburyport, Mass., the daughter of Charles and Ida (Mineith) Hicken. She attended the Springvale and Alfred school systems.

She was a homemaker most of her life and enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

She was predeceased by a husband, Henry McBride, a sister Mabel Coutemanche and two brothers, Harold and Burleigh Hicken.

She is survived by one son Gerald W. McBride of Wells; one daughter Arlene M. Spencer of N. Waterboro; one brother George Hicken of Springvale; two sisters, Marion Levielle of Springvale and Dorothy Briggs of Shapleigh; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

There was a graveside service Wednesday at the Hope cemetery in Kennebunk.

Maria Risley, 71

WELLS - Maria L. Risley, 71, of Royal Heights, Wells died Aug. 29, 2003 at her residence.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on March 12, 1932, the daughter of Oreste and Theresa Ferrara. She was predeceased by her brother, Vincent Ferrara, and her sisters, Lucy Ferrara, Eleanor (Ferrara) Baroncini, and Josephine "Dolly" (Ferrara) Drankwater.

She was brought up in Elmhurst, N.Y. and was a graduate of New Town High School, class of 1950.

She worked as a secretary with Merrill Lynch, New York State Police, and Pepsi Cola. She was most recently a cashier at Ames Department Store in Wells, retiring in 1993.

She loved spending time with her family, doing arts and crafts, and eating out. She had a fantastic sense of humor and was a very generous woman, always believing it is better to give than to receive.

She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her two sons, Timothy B. Risley and his wife Teena H. Risley of Apple Valley, Minn. and Michael S. Risley and his wife Barbara Fitzgerald of Wells; two daughters, Cheryl A. (Risley) Worthing and her husband Walter S. Worthing of Wells, and Jill M. (Risley) Roberts and her husband Christopher C. Roberts of Kennebunk; two grandchildren, Sara E. Worthing and Shawn C. Roberts.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk. Interment was at Ocean View cemetery in Wells.

Charles Seaman, 73

OGUNQUIT - Charles Littlefield Seaman, 73, died Aug. 20, 2003.

The statement for donations was inadvertently omitted in last week's listing.

It reads: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, PO Box 875, Ogunquit, ME 03907.

memorial service

BIDDEFORD - A tribute to honor the life of. Sam L. Cohen will be held on Friday night Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Etz Chaim at 36 Bacon St. in Biddeford. The community-at-large is invited.

Sam Cohen was an esteemed member and lifelong supporter of the Biddeford synagogue. He worked tirelessly to keep its doors open, including directing many modern changes to meet the needs of the growing York County Jewish community.

"Sammy" was born and raised in Biddeford and he touched the lives of many with his generosity. He is missed by many in the community and the congregation is extending this opportunity for all of his friends to honor him.

The evening will begin with a short Friday night service, followed by speakers honoring Cohen's life work and the dedication of a memorial plaque in the synagogue. Refreshments will be served in the downstairs social hall.

Lloyd Ellison, Sr., 70

KENNEBUNK - Lloyd L. "Bud" Ellison, Sr., 70, formerly of Ludlow and Springfield, Vt. died Aug. 31, 2003, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family at his residence on Longview Terrace in Kennebunk. He was the husband of Carol (Miller) Ellison.

He was born in Ludlow, Vt. Jan. 12, 1933, a son of Leroy and Vera (Jewitt) Ellison. He attended Ludlow schools. Following this he entered the apprentice program at the General Electric Company in Pittsfield, Mass. He then entered the United States Army. He received his bachelor of science degree at the University of Southern Maine. He was a manufacturing engineer in the aircraft industry for several years and was employed at the General Electric Plant in Ludlow, Vt. He moved to Maine in the mid 1970s and was employed at the Morningstar Corp. plant in Kennebunk. He then went back to Springfield, Vt. with the Bryant Grinder Company and in 1986 he moved back to Maine and became employed with the Pratt Whitney Company at North Berwick. Prior to retiring he was employed at the H.D. Bauman Company in Portsmouth, N.H.

He was a member of Black River Lafayette Lodge 85 A.F.&A.M. of Masons in Ludlow, Vt. and a member of Mt. Sinai Shrine 3 of Montpelier, Vt. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. He was a member and strong supporter of the National Rifle Association.

He was predeceased by a brother Frederick Ellison of Ludlow, Vt.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Carol (Miller) Ellison of Kennebunk; three sons, Shawn Ellison of Ludlow, Vt., Lloyd L. Ellison Jr. of Kennebunk, and Jeffrey Smith of Colchester, Vt.' three daughters, Joan White of Hartford, Vt., Linda Hastings of Mt. Holly, Vt. and Melanie Karpinski of Oxford, Pa.; one brother Dana Ellison of Ludlow, Vt.; two grandchildren, Tyler Farnsworth of Hartford, Vt. and Nicole Karpinski of Oxford, Pa.; one niece Diane Partenau of Vt.

A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Summer Street, Kennebunk, with the Rev. James King officiating the service. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Ludlow, Vt. at a later date.

James Andersen, 80

KENNEBUNK - James M. Andersen, 80, resident of Beach Avenue, Kennebunk formerly of Concord, Mass., died Aug. 25, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born April 18, 1923 in Acton, Mass., a son of John Henry and Olga (Ostberg) Andersen. He was a 1941 graduate of Acton High, World War II and served with the North Atlantic Wing Air Transport Command. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars along with American Theater Campaign Medal. Following the war he became a prominent builder in the Concord and Acton, Mass. area during the '60s and '70s.

He retired moved to Maine upon retiring 18 years ago. He attended the Evangelical Free Church in Concord, Mass. for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kennebunk. An avid golfer and was a member of Dutch Elm Golf Club in Arundel. He also served on the Louis T. Graves Memorial Library Building Committee in Kennebunkport.

He is predeceased by his wife Margaret (Carson) Andersen in 2001 and a son Kent J. Andersen in 1956.

He is survived by one son, Keith J. Andersen of Sanford; one daughter Mrs. John (Jean A.) Bailey of Kennebunk; one brother Walter Andersen of Acton, Mass.; one sister Helen Estabrook of Sun City, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Melissa J. Bailey of Portland, Ore., John H. Bailey III of Seattle, Wash., Jennie Marie Larson of Newburyport, Mass. and Jaycen A. Denorscia of Framingham, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday from the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kennebunk. Interment was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, Mass.

Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2 Lord St., Kennebunk, ME 04043 or to Caring Unlimited, PO Box 590, Sanford, ME 04073 in Mr. Andersen's memory.
