Evelyn Blaney

ELIOT - Evelyn F. Blaney of Eliot died Dec. 31, 2003 after a long illness.

Born Evelyn Delia Fogg, June 22, 1925 in North Anson, Maine to Jenny and Carlton Fogg, she is the youngest of the three Fogg children, predeceased by her brothers Elmer Fogg, of North Berwick, and Royal Fogg of Waterville.

She is survived by two of her children, Cindy Sawyer of South Berwick and Parker N. Blaney Jr. of Saco; her long-time companion Vincent Zaloga of Portsmouth, N.H.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She attended the University of Maine campus from 1943 through 1947 and graduated with a B.A. in sociology. She was a school teacher at Erskine Academy in China, Maine and in the York School system in the late 1940s and early 1950s, like her father, going into real estate in the mid 1950s. She was, for a time, the only Real Estate Broker in the Eliot area and ran a very successful business there before she moved to Hawaii with her former husband, Parker N. Blaney Sr. and their four children in 1971. After a few years living there, she obtained her Real Estate Broker's license and continued selling homes in the Hawaiian Islands. Eventually she purchased the Beachcomber Real Estate Company with her husband in Waikiki Beach, extending a very successful career as a businesswoman.

She moved back to New England and Maine in 1981 and resettled in Eliot, a place she has lived in most of her adult life. She was an active member of the Eliot Garden Club, the Merry-Mixers Women's Bowling League out of the Bowl-O-Rama in Portsmouth, the Eliot United Methodist Church, The Aloha Club, a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, and had an extensive knowledge and collection of gems and jewelry. She was a former athlete, and enjoyed golf and swimming until her illness forced her to discontinue those activities.

The essence of Evelyn was beyond the details of these facts though. Of her many friends and relatives who loved her, she will be remembered as a truly unique individual, a friendly, engaging, proud, strong-willed woman with a kind heart. Nothing can replace the loss of her to the many people who thought so much of her generosity of spirit and her loyal friendship - including her children and her grandchildren. She will be buried between her two other children, both of whom died prematurely: Scott Fogg Blaney in 1991, and Sandra Emma Wilson, who died in 2001.

A celebration of her life was held on Sunday at the Eliot United Methodist Church.

Family flowers only, donations may be made in her memory to the Eliot United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
