He fought in the front lines for over 250 days without a break as the Rainbow Division advanced through France and Germany, experiencing some of the hardest fighting of the war. One of the most affecting of his wartime experiences occurred when his company was the spearhead for the liberation of Dachau concentration camp on April 29, 1945, in which he was one of the first Americans to enter the camp.

After the war, he returned to Centralia to continue his college education. During this time he met and married Jimmie Joan Reed on Aug. 1, 1948 and transferred to the University of Colorado to complete his degree. Outside of work he had a wide variety of interests and talents. He was an accomplished pianist and composed a number of original works for the piano. He loved to read and to learn, and could speak knowledgeably on any number of topics, from Greek history to human evolution, modern politics to musical theory. He loved to discuss books, politics, and the issues of the day with family and friends, both in person and through spirited internet discussions. He was a life-long photographer, with a good eye for landscapes and a knack for catching the decisive moment in portraits. Another passion was golf; he was a long-time member of Webhannet Golf Club, playing with a regular foursome of old friends.

A lifelong Democrat, he was a consistent supporter of liberal social concepts of civil rights and justice. He was also a strong supporter of American Armed Forces, taking great pride in his military service, and in his later years, enjoyed attending reunions of the Rainbow Division swapping stories with fellow soldiers.
