Muguette Gregory, 87

KENNEBUNKPORT - Muguette (Midge) Gregory passed away peacefully the evening of Feb. 20, 2004.

She was born in Biddeford on March 12, 1916, the daughter of Peter Johnson and Maria (Dupuy) Johnson. She graduated from a high school directed by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary in Coaticook, Quebec.

She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Philip, in 1989. She married Philip L. Gregory on June 27, 1953 in Watertown, Mass. ("the hottest day in the history of Watertown"). The couple initially lived in Wellesley Hills, Mass., where their two sons, Philip Jr. and Charles, were born. In 1960, the Gregory family moved to Auburn. Then, in 1963, they settled in Los Altos, Calif.

Her husband was an executive with Raytheon Corp., both in New England and in California. In fact, they met in the 1940s when they were both buyers for Raytheon. The couple moved to California and participated in the early growth of the semiconductor industry. He retired from Raytheon in 1979 as director of procurement for the Semiconductor Division.

In 1970, he and two colleagues founded the Semiconductor Equipment Materials International ("SEMI"). The non-profit group presents trade forums worldwide for manufacturers of semiconductor equipment and materials. The largest show, SEMICON, is held annually in San Francisco and San Jose. He retired in 1984 as the firm's executive director.

The couple traveled extensively in building SEMI internationally. Among their tours included a trip in the early 1970s to Beijing, China. Shortly after President Nixon traveled to China in 1972, they were invited as guests of the People's Republic. They toured the then-fledgling electronics facilities in Beijing as the Chinese government was looking to build its domestic semiconductor operations.

She served as SEMI's hostess throughout the world. Her warm smile and kind words helped the organization build trust in countries throughout Europe and Asia.

In California, her volunteer activities included establishing the Villa Siena Auxiliary at Villa Siena, a home for the elderly in Mountain View, Calif. She also served as an early president of the Women's Club for St. Simon's Church and was in the Legion of Mary. Finally, she was secretary of the Mountain View chapter of Catholic Charities and a member of the Caritas Society.

During the mid-1950s, she and her husband built a beautiful cottage at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport. "The Cottage" became her summer home, and she would winter in Los Altos.

She was very interested in her Acadian heritage. In the mid-1990s, she helped her cousin, Columbia Johnson, found the Association des Johnson d'Acadie. She served as a founding director.

She is survived by two sons, Philip L. Gregory Jr. of Woodside, Calif., and Charles J. Gregory of Kennebunkport; three adoring grandsons. John, Matthew, and Mark; three loving daughters-in-law, Kathy Gregory, Anne Gregory, and Susan Martin. Midge is survived by her sister, the Rev. Sister Anna Dupuis of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary; and her cousin, Frank J. Glazier of Moody Beach.

Those who remain behind are grateful for how she touched their lives. She will be remembered for her many blessings - her generosity and thoughtfulness, her outgoing and energetic spirit, and her unconditional love for everyone she met. She loved her roses in Los Altos and her lilacs at Goose Rocks Beach. A very proud grandmother she watched her grandchildren progress in academics, athletics, and their Catholic faith. Her life was filled with love and joy.

A funeral Mass was said in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wells on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Villa Siena Foundation, 1855 Miramonte Ave., Mountain View, CA 94040.

Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Edward Houle, 89

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Edward "Eddie" R. Houle, 89, of Court Street in Portsmouth, formerly of Walker Avenue in Kittery, died on Feb. 29, 2004 following a period of failing health.

Born in Manchester, N.H. on Oct. 8, 1914, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Houle and attended local schools graduating from Manchester High School.

He served his country as a member of the United States Armed Services for more than 15 years as a medical corpsman.

He enjoyed his home on Walker Avenue in Kittery for many years; he loved tending to his flower and vegetable gardens and enjoyed raising animals. His love of his animals and his sometimes mischievous temperament led him in the late 1970s to allow his chickens and turkeys to roam freely around the neighborhood for a time before being convinced that they needed to be in their pen.

His greatest love was his faith, a faith that allowed him to share his gifts with others and with his God. His church St. Raphael Parish Church in Kittery was a very important part of his life. He served for more than 15 years as sexton, he served as an acolyte, and Eucharistic minister, as well as on various committees. During his time as sexton he enjoyed keeping the grounds of the church, planting many flowers and tending to the lawn. Most recently he enjoyed leading the rosary group at the Feaster Apartments in Portsmouth where he made his home.

He will be missed by the many people he unselfishly helped throughout his life. He is survived by his sister Shirley Finn of Hartford, Conn.; several nieces and nephews; a dear friend and caregiver Michelle Mallory and her husband David of Rye; and a friend Shirley Finn of Virginia. He was predeceased by a dear friend Peter Finn in February.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at his church St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery. Friends may visit today from 1-3 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd. in Kittery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Rd., Exeter, NH.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
