Christopher Wuerthner, 37

WELLS - Chris Wuerthner, 37, senior builder at Rumery's Boatyard, Biddeford, died suddenly the morning of March 24, 2004, while at work.

A 1988 graduate of the Landing School of Boat Building and Design, Kennebunk, he had been employed at Rumery's since 1991.

Prior to joining the staff at Rumery's he had served as a teaching assistant at the Landing School and had been self-employed as a boat carpenter. His most recent project, the 38-foot lobster yacht, Moxie, was featured at this year's Maine Wooden Boat Builders Show.

Among the outstanding features of the boat was the beautifully crafted and finished mahogany used throughout including paneled doors and the exquisite mahogany wheel which graces the pilot house. The design and construction of the wheel represented the kind of challenge he savored and that distinguished his work.

He also built and customized other craft in Rumery's line - the 26-foot Alerion sloop designed by Nat Herreshoff and the Torpedo 38, which incorporates features from Will Frost's legendary Leonard W. His restoration projects included Windalier, Moon Fleet and Sonnet. His half models are prized possessions of art.

A 1986 graduate of Kennebunk High School, he played soccer and ice hockey.

He was a member of Kennebunk's 1986 Class B state champion ice hockey team.

His passion for boat building was surpassed only by his devotion to his wife, Jennifer, and his three young sons. He and sons Tyler and Nicholas often puttered together in the boat barn attached to their Drakes Island home. Their backyard, with the tree house Chris built and the zip rope and swings secured to the ancient birch trees which border their property, was where Chris and Jen spent many hours with Andrew and his older brothers.

He is survived by his wife Jennifer and two sons, Tyler, Nicholas and Andrew of Drakes Island; three brothers, Scout of Arundel, Eric of Alfred and Peter Clothier of Dorchester, Mass.; one sister, Melissa Clothier of Biddeford; his parents Joan and Bob Wuerthner of Kennebunk; and his grandparents, Marian and John Longyear of Kennebunk.

A memorial gathering was held Sunday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. A service honoring his life was held Monday at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Kennebunk.

Donations can be made to Wuerthner Educational Fund, c/o Ocean National Bank, PO Box 58, Wells, ME 04090.
