C. Edward Bartlett Jr., 88

ELIOT - C. Edward (Ned) Bartlett Jr., 88 of Goodwin Road in Eliot, died Jan. 14, 2004 at York Hospital following period of failing health.

Born in Eliot on Dec. 26, 1915, he was a son of Charles Edward Sr. and Jean Bartlett, he attended local schools, graduating from Eliot High School. He furthered his education at the University of Maine.

He was employed as a bus and truck driver for a number of years before becoming a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he was employed until his retirement.

After retirement he wintered in Florida and enjoyed traveling in his camper, especially to antique engine and tractor shows. He enjoyed working with his antique one-lunger engines, he had a vast collection and a strong expertise about them. He was a member of the Pioneer Park Antique Engine Association, an antique engine club in Florida, and the Maine Antique Engine Association. He enjoyed the yearly Eliot Antique Engine and Tractor Show, which gave him an opportunity to share his enjoyment with fellow enthusiasts.

He also enjoyed antiques, and for a time, ran an antique shop at his home in Eliot. He enjoyed membership in the Naval Masonic Lodge of Kittery and the Eliot American Legion. He also attended the First Baptist Church in South Berwick.

He will be missed by those who knew and loved him; including his special friend Nell Raitt of Eliot; one brother Arnold Bartlett of Kittery; special neighbors and friends John and Helen Sullivan of Eliot; and one nephew.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Alice (Leibman) Bartlett and their son Harland Bartlett.

A funeral was held on Sunday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, in Kittery.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Eliot Antique Tractor and Engine Show, C/O Lisa Raitt, Worcester Road, Eliot ME 03903.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Beverly Card, 69

ELIOT - Beverly Irene Card, 69, of Beech Road in Eliot, died Jan. 12, 2004 at York Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1934 in Skowhegan, daughter of Rita I. and Edward White of Portsmouth, N.H.

She is survived by nine children, Deborah Sylvester and Gwendolyn Rix of Maine, Stephen Card of Portsmouth, N.H. and Darlene Matthews of Rye, N.H., Nancy Grijalva, Steven Card, and Patricia French of California, and Karen Newberry of Montana, and Bradley Card of Delaware; 17 grandchildren, Chad, Jenni, Jessica, Amie Linda, Sarah-Jane, Rita, Sean, Amanda, Karissa, Megan, Madeleine, Cameron, Austin, Adam, Misty, Chasity, Brooks; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 15 at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Please omit flowers; donations may be made in her memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 500 Forrest Ave., Suite 6, Portland, ME 04101.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Marjorie Kellett, 86

KENNEBUNK - Marjorie B. Kellett, 86, a resident of Huntington Common, died peacefully on Jan. 16, 2004, at Southern Maine Medical Center after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1917 in Beverly, Mass., the eldest daughter of Harry and Edith (Breed) Burnham.

She graduated from Tufts University, earning her bachelor's degree and some years later she attended the University of New Hampshire to earn a master's degree in English. After completing her education, she went on to teach English at Endicott College, Beverly, Mass. for several years.

She enjoyed arts and crafts, designing her own sweaters and various needlepoint projects. She also enjoyed painting, playing the piano, and she was taking a class in flower arranging at Huntington Common.

She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Mary Ann in 1949; her eldest son, Norman L. "Larry" Kellett Jr. in 1994; and her husband of 60 years, Rev. Dr. Norman L. Kellett, in 2001.

She is survived by Lesley E. Kellett, her eldest son's widow, of Gorham; her son, Stephen B. Kellett and his wife Linda of Appleton, Wisc.; one daughter Rosemary Kellett-Breed of Sanford; two grandsons, William and Christopher; one sister Ruth (Burnham) London of Toledo, Ohio; one sister-in-law Eleanor Burnham of Florida; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, Route 1, Kennebunk, with Rev. Alfred M. Niese officiating. Burial will at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk in the spring. Everyone is invited to a reception at Huntington Common, Ross Road, Kennebunk, following the memorial service.

At the request of the family, please omit flowers. Donations can be made in her memory to the Trinity Chapel, Kennebunk Beach, ME 04043, or to the American Parkinson's Disease Assoc., 60 Bay St., Suite 401, Staten Island, NY 10301.

Floyd Randall, 89

WELLS - Floyd A. "Rudy" Randall, 89, of 24 Curtis St., died unexpectedly at the York Hospital on Jan. 18, 2004 of a heart attack.

He was born in North Berwick on Dec. 15, 1914, the youngest son of the late Katie Day and Arthur O. Randall.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Elwyn and Harvey Randall and two sisters, Katherine Hurd and Isabel Turcotte.

He graduated from North Berwick High School and attended Northeastern University in Boston for three years, majoring in chemical engineering.

He was a licensed electrician and plumber, working for several companies in the area and had his own firm for many years, working on many buildings in the North Berwick / Wells area and as a maintenance worker for the University of New Hampshire. Upon retirement he was commonly referred to as the "Mayor" of the Eldridge area of Wells.

He was a member of the Masonic Order in North Berwick for many years.

Always a railroad buff, he was particularly interested in the new Amtrak train run between Portland and Boston. In recent years, he was a volunteer at the Wells Amtrak train station where he imparted considerable local knowledge to travelers in the area and made frequent visits to Portland and Boston. He participated in the inaugural run with then Gov. Angus King and celebrated his birthday on that trip to Boston with his dear friends Sandy Hughes and Nancy Junnilla.

He is survived by 25 nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and nephews throughout the United States.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and the funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday. Both services will be held at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick.

Interment will follow at a date selected by the family at the Evergreen cemetery in Berwick.

The family would like to thank Dr. Todd Adams and the staff at York Hospital for their tender and loving care. We would also like to thank the many friends and neighbors of Floyd who have shown so much love and concern for him in his life in Wells and his many friends at Amtrak for allowing him to participate in an activity that meant so much to him in his retirement years.

Dorothy Thurlow, 77

WELLS - Dorothy Thurlow, 77, of Wells, died Jan. 15, 2004, following a brief illness.

She was born in Harpswell on Sept. 13, 1926, the daughter of Winfield and Hazel (Collins) Davis.

She was a member of the Wells / Ogunquit Health Association, the Nubble Lightkeepers Square Dancers, the Trailblazers Family Club, the Wells Band Boosters, a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 365, the Thursday AM Coffee Bowling League, the Wells Beach Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary, the Wells / Ogunquit Seniors, and the Trailblazers Cribbage Tournament.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Harrison, James, and Herbert Davis and two sisters Celia Smith and Elmyra Manson.

She is survived by her husband, Reginald; three sons, Clifford Field and his wife Louise, George Thurlow and his wife Pamela, and Charles Thurlow and his wife Carrie; three daughters, Althea Downs and her husband Arthur, Dorothy Ames and her husband Charles Geer, and Hollie Parrott and her husband Frank; one sister, Elvira Watson; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Tuesday at Bibber Memorial Chapel in Wells.

Joyce Trafton, 75

BERWICK - Joyce (Peterson) Trafton, 75, of School Street in Berwick, died as she lived, with her children and grandchildren at her side on Jan. 16, 2004 at York Hospital.

She was born in Berwick on Sept. 26, 1928, the daughter of Clarence A. and Ruth (Sargent) Peterson. She graduated from Berwick Academy in South Berwick and Willard Academy of Boston, Mass., where she earned her beautician's license and practiced for many years.

For 18 years, she worked side by side with her husband as caretaker of the Hamilton House and Jewett House in South Berwick. She also worked with her husband restoring several historical houses in the seacoast area. Her strong faith was a beacon to all that came into contact with her. She was a communicant of The Bible Speaks of South Berwick.

The love of her life was her large extended family. She cared for her mother and mother-in-law the last years of their lives and had been the caretaker to her husband for 10 years, while always a ready hand for her children and grandchildren.

Besides her husband of 54 years, Marlin E. Trafton, she leaves three children, one son Scott Trafton and wife Susan; two daughters, Susan Sullivan and husband Darryl, and Christina Mros and husband Edward (EJ); 10 grandchildren, Sarah Eaton and husband Jeffrey, Seth Goldworthy and wife Nicole, Rebecca Mros and fiancˇ Craig Langill, Jesse, Korie and Cody Mros, Casey Nicholas and Elizabeth Trafton; three great-grandsons, Austin Langill, Nicholas Eaton and Jacob Goldworthy; many nieces and nephews; five sisters, Margaret Petruzelli, Jean Hayes and Patricia Swan, all of Connecticut, Marion Petersen of North Carolina and Janet Wanson of Florida; three brothers, Herbert Peterson of Maine, David Peterson and Donald Peterson, both of California.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn cemetery with Pastor Bruce Brown of The Bible Speaks, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick.

Contributions in Joyce's memory are suggested to the Building Fund of The Bible Speaks, 224 Main St., South Berwick, ME 03908.

Linda Davenport, 60

KENNEBUNKPORT - Linda Dee Davenport, 60, a resident of Log Cabin Road, Kennebunkport died Jan. 26, 2004 at the Southern Maine Medical Center Biddeford from complication due to a long battle with diabetes.

She was born in Saco on Dec. 1, 1943, a daughter of Donald Raymond Bryant Sr. and Thelma Agnes (Dill) Bryant Gantnier and graduated from Kennebunk High School the class of 1962. She attended Beauty Academy Hairdressing School in Saco and Police Schooling for several years.

She was a self-employed hairdresser in Cape Porpoise for 18 years. She was a Police Matron for Kennebunkport Police Department for more than 22 years and received a recognition award for continuous service. For the last 21 years, she was employed by the Beaudoin family as a nanny. She was also their office personnel and treasured friend.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary, both of Kennebunkport where she volunteered her time for the organizations.

She enjoyed going to the horse shows and basketball games.

She is survived by her husband of 16 years Russell Preston Davenport of Kennebunkport; three daughters, Karen Lee Davis of Sanford, Lisa Ann Monk of Arundel and Amy Elizabeth Eldridge of Northport; five brothers, Gary Bryant of West Kennebunk, Jeffrey Bryant of Old Orchard Beach, Donald Bryant Jr., Steven Bryant and Kenneth Bryant all of Kennebunkport; four sisters, Donna Reinhardt of Wisconsin, Kelly Gantnier of Portland, Kristi Kidwell and Melinda Anderson, both of Kennebunkport; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, where a funeral service will be following the Eastern Star Service at 1 p.m. Friday with Pastor Ruth Merriam officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Linda's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2208, Church St., Augusta, ME 04330-2208.

Fletcher Ashley, 77

LEXINGTON, Mass. - Fletcher Ashley, 77, passed away on Jan. 26, 2004 from cancer. He had resided in Lexington for 53 years.

Born in Orange, N.J. on May 28, 1926 to the late Raymond E. and Hilda B. Ashley of Massachusetts and Maine, he was also the son of the late Elizabeth H. Ashley of Massachusetts and Maine.

After he graduated from Phillips Academy, Exeter, N.H., he served in the U.S. Navy. He then graduated from Harvard University with an A.B. Architectural Science cum laude in 1950 and a Master of Architecture in 1953.

Formerly an associate at Hugh Stubbins and Associates, he retired as a partner of the architectural firm Arrowstreet (formerly Ashley, Myer.) He co-designed the Boston Architectural Center that took first place in international design competition and Barnacle Billy's Etc. (formerly the Whistling Oyster) in Perkins Cove. He also was awarded design contracts for projects at Harvard University, Brandeis University, Babson College, Hampshire College, Marlboro College (Vt.), Lowell and Worcester State Colleges, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, and the Boston Redevelopment Authority. He designed his award-winning former vacation home, the "Rockhouse," in Ogunquit, where he and his family spent many blissful summers scrambling over the rocky cliffs and discovering tide pool wonders.

His creativity and innovation in architecture earned him many design awards including: Progressive Architecture Design Award in 1958, American Institute of Architects' "Homes for Better Living" Award in 1962, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development National Award in 1970, and Architectural Record Award in 1971.

He took great pleasure in landscaping and gardening his two properties. He was also an avid art collector, sport fisherman, and bridge and tennis player. He was a member of the Belmont Hill Club as well as a trustee of Cambridge Savings Bank and the Cape Neddick Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joan S. Ashley of Massachusetts; four daughters, Hilda Rideout and her husband Stan of New Hampshire, Karen Hughes and her husband S. Leon of North Carolina, Swan Ashley of Massachusetts, and Alison Ashley of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, Gregory Rideout of Massachusetts, Scott Rideout and his wife Rhonda of New Hampshire, Roland Hughes of Delaware, Anya Hughes of the Bahamas, Michael Ashley-Rollman of Massachusetts, Caitlin Ashley-Rollman of Massachusetts, Rebekah Hughes of North Carolina, and Vanessa Ashley of Massachusetts; three brothers, Raymond Ashley of North Carolina, Davis Ashley of Arizona, and Peter Ashley of Maine; and one sister, Eleanor Medford of Pennsylvania.

A memorial service for relatives and friends will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Belmont Hill Club, 825 Concord Ave., Belmont, Massachusetts.

Everett Chadbourne Sr.

NORTH BERWICK - Everett A. Chadbourne Sr., a life-long resident of North Berwick, passed away Jan. 23, 2004 at York Hospital after a four-month period of declining health.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1922, the only son of Harold and Lura (Allen) Chadbourne and attended local schools. In his younger years he enjoyed raising rabbits, chickens and game birds. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, and reading. He thought the world of his beagles, Tippi and Socks.

He proudly served his country during World War II as a technician fifth grade in an armored division. He worked briefly for the North Berwick Woolen Mills, 18 years at Hussey Manufacturing, then for Adams Trucking where he took early retirement to take care of his beloved wife of 38 years, Ruth.

He was predeceased by his wife and mother of his children, Ruth (Coleman) Chadbourne in 1985, a daughter Martha Alane in 1954, and a grandson Zachary Wentworth in 1995.

He is survived by his second wife of three months, Dorothy Michaud of South Berwick; one son Everett A. Chadbourne Jr. of North Berwick; three daughters, Judith Garrett of Milton Mills, N.H., Cheryl Wentworth and Patsy Koelker, both of North Berwick; 10 grandsons; seven granddaughters; one sister Mrs. Richard (Olive) Shaw of Waterboro; several cousins; and nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick.

Marjorie Gerald, 70

YORK BEACH - Marjorie E. Gerald, 70, of 11 Cappy's La. in York Beach, died on Jan. 23, 2004 at her home following a long illness.

Born in Detroit, Mich. on Oct. 10, 1933, she was a daughter of Ezra and Gladys (Clarke) Littlefield and attended her early education in Detroit before moving to York with her family where she continued school and graduated from York High School. She furthered her education graduating from nursing school.

She was an active member of the Union Congregational Church in York Beach from 1947 until recently. She was a Sunday school teacher for the first and second grades, a member of the Pilgrim Fellowship and enjoyed singing with the choir.

She was married to the late Thomas Donaghue "Cappy" Gerald until his death in 1966.

She was employed for many years as a nurse at York Hospital. She enjoyed membership in the former Piscataqua Chapter - Order of the Eastern Star, currently the Sara Orne Jewitt Chapter OES - South Berwick, and the York American Legion.

Her love of people was a driving force that allowed her to fight to build the York Beach Camper Park, where she has enjoyed providing a wonderful place for families to come and enjoy Maine. For nearly 15 years, the campground family she enjoyed so much was her life; from the day they closed at the end of the season she would anxiously look forward to their return for another fun-filled summer together. One of the greatest aspects of running the park for her, was being able to work daily with her family at the park.

She is survived by her loving family: one daughter and her husband Diane and John Spear of York Beach; two sons and their wives, Thomas and Pamela Gerald of York Beach and Timothy and Joann Gerald of York Beach; three grandchildren, Jennifer Spear, Jessica Gerald and Thomas Jeffrey (TJ) Gerald; her dear friend and loving caregiver Dr. David Lauter and his wife Diane and their children Mike and Sarah, who provided her and her family with so much love and kindness for so many years; two nieces and their husbands, Diane and Tom Bassett of New Jersey and Barbara and Pat Rizzutl, also of New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Ebbie Linscott and Dotty Milligan and their families; and her beloved little dogs, Butter and Princess.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Thomas D. "Cappy" Gerald, sisters Susan Littlefield Herman, Gertrude Littlefield Chilson and Barbara Littlefield Anderson and brothers, Ernie Littlefield and William Littlefield.

A funeral was celebrated Tuesday at her church, the Union Congregation Church in York Beach with the Rev. Patricia Smith officiating. Burial followed in First Parish cemetery in York.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
