Kathleen Burgess, 75

KENNEBUNK - Kathleen E. Burgess, 75, passed away peacefully on Feb. 9, 2003 at Kennebunk Nursing Center after spending the day with several members of her family.

A lifelong resident of the area, she was born to Arthur F. and Elsie N. (Wyman) Burgess on the family farm in Arundel where she lived and cared for her parents until their deaths. She then became a resident of Kennebunk.

She graduated from Kennebunk High School and worked at Crossmans Clothing Store, Dr. McPhetres dentaloOffice and retired after many years with Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells Water District.

Beloved "Auntie" to her large extended family, she assumed the role of matriarch, working diligently over the years to maintain connections and communication within her widely scattered members. Birthdays and traditional holidays were faithfully and joyously observed to the particular delight of younger nieces and nephews over the individuality of the decorated birthday cakes she created for them.

She is survived by one sister, Mary Jane and Don Lamontagne of Gorham, N.H.; two brothers, William A. and Wilma Burgess of Farmington, and Allan W. and Eve Burgess of Kennebunk; many cousins, nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Martha Catholic Church in Kennebunk, followed by a gathering of family and friends at the church hall. Burial will be at Hope cemetery in the spring.

Donations can be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Assoc., 10 Bangor St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Nancy McGinnis, 65

KITTERY - Nancy Helen McGinnis, 65, of Bousch Street, formerly of York and Wells died Feb. 8, 2004 at York Hospital.

She was born in Sanford, Aug. 4, 1938, daughter of James and Dorothy (Lirette) McGinnis. She graduated from St. Ignatius and from Robinson Female Seminary School in Exeter, N.H. She received a medical assistant certificate from the Port York Medical Clinic, in Portsmouth, N.H. She graduated from Tufts University Medical School of Anaesthesiology as a dental surgery anaesthesiology assistant. She also took evening language classes at the University of Tennessee.

She worked as a live-in care-giver in the York area for many years.

She enjoyed creating stained-glass designs for her friends. She enjoyed music and exploring the local area.

She lived in Tennessee before moving to York in 1982 and then she moved to Island Beach in Wells.

She was predeceased by her son, George Dufour Jr. and by her brother Richard McGinnis. She leaves many "dear to the heart" friends.

Services will be private and donations may be made to charity of one's choice or have a party in her memory.

Doris Saulnier, 75

KENNEBUNK - Doris Therese Saulnier, 75, a resident of Kennebunk, died Feb. 3, 2004 at York Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Saugus, Mass. on June 28, 1928, a daughter of Arthur and Rose (Doucette) Saulnier.

She and her husband, Laurie Alfred Saulnier, settled in Lynn Mass., where she worked as a seamstress for Simons.

She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She was also an avid Bingo player, and could be found many nights playing at the St. Louis Alumni Hall in Biddeford. Twice a year she would look forward to traveling with her brother, Charles, to Nova Scotia. They would stay at their family home and she would play Bingo every night.

She is survived by two sons, Kevin L. Saulnier of Chulavista, Calif. and Dennis J. A. Saulnier of Kennebunk; two daughters, Ann M. Glazier of Kennebunk and Michelle D. Fuller of Rochester, N.H.; one brother Charles Donald Saulnier of Stoneham, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday at St. Mary's Church in Wells with Father Labelle officiating.

Interment will follow in the spring at Pine Grove cemetery in Lynn, Mass.

Kenneth Newson, 88

ELIOT - Kenneth Newson of 3 Newson La., Eliot, died at his home Feb. 2, 2004.

Born in Kittery on Sept. 24, 1915, he was the son of Clarence Newson and Alice (Getchell) Newson. He graduated from Traip Academy with the class of 1933. He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II in Great Britain in Europe.

He met his wife, Margaret Doris Phillips in Wales and in June of 1944 they were married. Upon discharge from the Army he started his career with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiring in 1973. Soon after he worked at the Maine Liquor Store in Kittery and after at Newson Family Markets.

He was also a member of the Naval Masonic Lodge 184 of Kittery and the Kittery Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He loved his family, the birds, his dog Charlie and the Piscataqua River that he lived on most of his life. He often spoke of Old Kittery, watching the Memorial Bridge being floated into place, and walking over the frozen river to Portsmouth. He also enjoyed his time in Wales where they owned a cottage on the mountain where he had many friends. His family roots extend many generations in Kittery including family names of Trefethen and Fernald, once owning the islands in the river, which are now the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Doris; daughter Janice Bellantone and her husband Stephen; son Alan Newson and his wife Frances, and son David Newson and his partner Jean Scott, her daughter and son-in-law Anne and Chris Donnell, his grandchildren Megan and Lindsay Newson, Marc Bellantone and his wife Angela, Stephen Bellantone and his wife Cara, and one great-granddaughter Samantha Bellantone and his extended family in Wales, Scotland, London, Amsterdam, Australia, and in Ohio.

He was predeceased by his sister Doris Chapman and an infant son Ronald Neil Newson. A quiet family man who will be missed by his loving family and friends.

Services will be private at the request of the family.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Center for Wildlife, PO Box 620, Cape Neddick, ME 03902.

Stanley Tuttle Sr., 77

SHAPLEIGH - Stanley Warren Tuttle Sr., 77, of Back Road in Shapleigh, died Feb. 4, 2004 surrounded by his family at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was one of 19 children born to Martin and Eveleen (England) Tuttle Sr., June 21, 1926 in Portland. He grew up in Limerick and Limington and attended schools there. He graduated from Sanford High School. He was employed as a production supervisor for Wasco Products in Sanford for many years. He married Dawn Muchmore in 1946 and would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on Feb. 9.

He was a self-made man. He was a voracious reader. His favorite author was Tom Merton. A liberal Democrat, he was active with the Democratic Party. He and his wife Dawn helped to establish the Free Meal Kitchen located at the Sanford Unitarian-Universalist Church. They worked more than 14 years with the program and often he would share vegetables from his abundant vegetable garden. An avid golfer, he enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and gardening. He was a devoted family man, one who enjoyed having his children and grandchildren home for his famous boiled dinner.

Survivors include his wife, Dawn M. Tuttle of Shapleigh; two sons, Stanley "Skip" and his wife Cynthia Tuttle Jr., of Wells and Wesley P. Tuttle of Kennebunk; two daughters, Debra Pepin of Shapleigh, and Cheryl and her husband Marc Clift of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six brothers, Martin Jr., John, Maurice, Harry, Richard, and William Tuttle; and four sisters, Rose Tuttle, Betty Bernier, Beatrice Sevigny and Helena Campbell.

Fellowship was held Tuesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Sanford. Committal prayers and burial will be later in the spring.

William Meeks, 82

WELLS - William Eugene Meeks, 82, of Wells, formerly of Massachusetts, who resided in Gulf of Bay Park in Inglewood, Fla. during the winters, died March 19, 2004 at Maine Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born April 6, 1921 in Towns, Ga.

He graduated from Tampa High School.

He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force - Navigator Glider Pilot. He parachuted from a burning plane and landed on a fence in a field. During his year in recovery at a hospital, he met his wife of 59 years, Estelle, in Sioux City, Iowa where she was in the Woman's Army Corp. On Feb. 11, 1945 they married.

He was awarded a bachelor's degree in textile engineering from Rhode Island School of Design in 1955. Five of his children were present at his graduation.

He worked in sales at John Hancock Insurance. He was also self-employed in real estate for 30 years owning Harmony Homes Real Estate for 15 years and the owner of a grocery store.

He enjoyed golf, loved to square dance, which he did for more than 35 years, was a past president and officer of the Yankee Twirlers of Woburn, Mass.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Kfoury, a brother and a sister.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years; three sons, William E. Meeks Jr. of Peabody, Mass. and John W. Meeks and Michael E. Meeks, both of Oakland, Calif.; three daughters, Sharon Anaclario of Richmond, Calif., Samantha Legare of Medford, Mass., and Janice Borris of Marmora, N.J.; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Florence Morrow, 100

KITTERY - Florence (Durgin) Morrow, 100, of Newson Avenue in Kittery, died on March 17, 2004.

Born on Aug. 15, 1903 in Kittery Point, she was a daughter of Percy and Elizabeth Durgin. She attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1921.

She met and later married her loving husband of many years Cedric T. Morrow. They made their home together in Kittery until his death in 1981.

She was employed at French's Department Store in Portsmouth as well as Paul's Market, retiring in 1968.

She enjoyed membership in her church, the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point, also in NARFE, and AARP as well as the Kittery Chapter, Order of Eastern Star 90.

A lovely woman with much to share with those who enjoyed time with her, she will be missed by many. She is survived by her nieces and nephews and was predeceased by her husband Cedric Morrow; four brothers, Andrew, Harold, Norman and Carl Durgin; and two sisters, Mary Moore and Margaret Rostron.

Arrangements will be announced at a later date.

George Pavelonis, 84

WELLS - George Joseph Pavelonis, 84, a resident of Stephen Eaton Apts., Wells died March 17, 2004 at the Kennebunk Nursing Home after a brief illness.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass. on April 22, 1919, a son of Mr. and Mrs. August Pavelonis and graduated from Lawrence High School, class of 1939.

He served with the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946 and he received several medals and ribbons awards.

He was employed by the Oxford Paper Mill of Lawrence, Mass. for many years.

He has many pen pals from all over the world and he enjoyed collecting postcards and stamps.

He was predeceased by his wife Lillian Guy Pavelonis and a brother Peter Pavelonis.

He is survived by three daughters Mrs. Russell (Lillian) Fox of Wells, Mrs. John (Dorothy) A. Richard of Methuen, Mass. and Mary L. Sinkewjz of Biddeford; one sister, Adele Clively of Utah; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 10 to 11 AM Friday March 19th 2004

A funeral Mass was held Friday at the St. Mary's Church, Wells with the Rev. Father Joseph Ford officiating. Interment was held in St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence, Mass.

Should friends desire memorial donations may be made to the Food Pantry C/O St. Mary's Church, PO Box 368, Wells, ME 04090 in Mr. Pavelonis' memory.

Betty Shangraw, 73

KENNEBUNK - Betty Jean Shangraw, 73, a resident of Woodside Drive, Kennebunk, died at her home March 17, 2004, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born Jan. 22, 1931 in Beech Creek, Pa., a daughter of Glen and Verna (Yearick) Moore Sr. She graduated from Lock Haven High School and furthered her studies in writing composition and the art of painting. She married Jack Lewis Shangraw July 14, 1951. She enjoyed writing poetry, painting in watercolor and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Blanchard, Pa. and attended the Messiah Christian Church of Wells.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jack L. Shangraw of Kennebunk. They raised two sons, Forrest E. of South Ryegate, Vt. and Dennis S. of Nelson, N.H., who passed away in 1993; one daughter, Pamela S. Murdough of York; one sister, Marjorie Bechdel of Mt. Royal, N.J.; one brother, Paul Moore of Houston, Texas; and eight grandchildren whom she loved and adored.

She is predeceased by a daughter Brenda K. in 1959 and her brother Glen Moore Jr. in 1998.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Messiah Christian Church, Route 1, Wells with the pastors Dan Moore and Glen Barton as officiates.

Interment will be at Village cemetery in Nelson, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund of Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7295, in Betty Jean's memory.

Warren Witham, 57

MIAMI, Fla. - Warren J. Witham, son of Margaret and Warren J. Witham died suddenly on March 15, 2004 at Jackson Memorial Trauma Center in Miami, Fla.

He was born in Haverhill, Mass. in 1947 and attended St. James Grammar School, Assumption Preparatory in Worcester and Iowa Wesleyan College.

He wore many hats in his all too short lifetime. For the past 10 years, he lived in Key West, Fla. where he lived life fully and enjoyed many friendships.

He is survived by four siblings, A. Kate Witham of Kennebunkport, David J. Witham of Bar Harbor, Mary E. Donovan of Saco, and Margaret E. Witham of Boston, Mass.

His life was celebrated on Saturday at St. James Church in Haverhill, Mass., the home parish of the Witham family. The celebrant was Rev. Walter J. Waldron, Pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Roxbury, Mass. and a close family friend.

He will be remembered for his passionate love of life and his outreach to people from North to South.
