Kenneth Penney, 95

KENNEBUNK - Kenneth Penney, 95, a resident of Summer Street, Kennebunk died March 22, 2004 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief illness surrounded by his family at his side.

He was born in Bangor on Jan. 12, 1909, a son of Edmund and Emily (Billie) Penney and attended Clifton schools.

He moved to Little Falls, N.Y. where he worked at the Erie Canal for several years then he moved back to Maine where he worked at the Bath and South Portland Shipyard during World War II. After the war he moved to Old Orchard Beach where he worked at the Saco Lowell Shop.

In 1947, he moved to Kennebunk and a few years later he went to work for Keuffel and Esser of Kennebunk until his retirement in 1972, but he kept involved with his family's lives and his many hobbies which kept him alert until the very end. He had been making plans to go brook fishing this spring and had his garden all planned with assistance from his daughters.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening with a passion and picking blueberries.

Daughters Deanna and Joyce were his primary caregivers through the last five years since the death of their mother, allowing him to live independently in his much-loved home.

He was considered a real true gentleman to all his friends and neighbors at the Landing and will be surely missed.

He was predeceased by his wife Hazel M. (Fenwick) Penney who died in 1999 and four brothers, Roland, Norman, Owen, and Russell Penney, a sister Hilda Penney Braun and two grandsons, Andrew Ross and Robert Vadnais and a great-grandson Kenneth David Webster.

He is survived by one son, Alan Penney of Amarillo, Texas; four daughters, Marilyn Welch of Cary, Ill., Deanna Ross and her husband Harry of Wells, Sandra Carroll of Sarasota, Fla., and Joyce Walz and her husband Karl of Sanford.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kennebunk Baptist Church, Main Street, Kennebunk with the Rev. James King officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk in the spring.

Memorial donation may be made to the Kennebunk Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 396, Kennebunk, ME 04043 in Mr. Penney's memory.

Elsie Chase, 76

WELLS - Elsie Elizabeth (Annis) Chase, 76, of Wells, beloved wife of Daniel (Maurice) Chase, passed away March 20, 2004 at York Hospital, York, surrounded by four generations of her family. She died peacefully after a long bout with lung disease.

Born in Wells on Feb. 16, 1928, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Louie (Mellor) Annis. She attended Wells schools, graduating in 1947. She missed two years of elementary school in the 1930s, courageously fighting off pneumonia in the days before modern antibiotics.

She married Daniel on June 15, 1947. She spent her life as a mother and a housewife. She was a wife in the old style, a person who never sat down to eat until her own family was nearly finished because she wanted to ensure all had enough. Her children and their friends will fondly recall her hot milk cakes and her chocolate mayonnaise cakes. She never got her driver's license until she was in her 40s. She worked for several years as a chambermaid at the Norseman in Ogunquit.

She successfully instilled in her children a spirit of independence in thought, word and deed.

Always a competitor, she strived to succeed in whatever she did, whether it was bowling or playing her favorite game of cribbage. At cards, she was known for her ruthless play - while her grandchildren always seemed to win their first game of cards with her, they found it much tougher to win a second.

She was loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Her sisters, Lucille, Arlene and Marjorie predeceased her.

Besides her husband of Wells, she is survived by one daughter and five sons, Thomas and his wife, Carol of Acton, Kathleen, and her husband, Glenn Winslow of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Jack and his wife, Arlene of Wells, Paul and his wife, Debbie of Wells; Glen, and his wife, Clara of Conway, Ark., and Stephen and his wife, Diane of Wells; 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her special friends, Jim and Helen Lewis of York.

A funeral was held Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Spring Interment in Pine Hill cemetery in Wells.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Maine Children's Cancer Program, 100 US Route 1, Suite 107, Scarborough, ME 04074.
