Raymond Hillman,88

BIDDEFORD - Raymond W. Hillman, 88, resident of Fortunes Rocks, Biddeford formerly of Winchester, MA died at Southern Maine Medical Center, May 22 after a lengthy illness. He is the husband of Frances (Bouzane) Hillman.

Mr. Hillman was born May 10, 1916 in Holyoke, MA a son of William and Mabel (Souther) Hillman. He attended Holyoke schools and served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the USS Susan B. Anthony AP-72 (1945). Following his tour of duty, he worked for Commercial Union Insurance Company of Boston for 20 years, retiring as one of its Vice-Presidents. He moved to Maine in 1978. Mr. Hillman was a member of the Reading, MA Lions Club and enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending time with his family.

Mr. Hillman is survived by his wife of 56 years Frances Hillman, 2 sons Lee R. Hillman of Flanders, NJ and David Charles Hillman of Cape Elizabeth, ME, 2 daughters Susan Hillman Bourne of Grand Manan, Canada and Elizabeth Hillman-Garriepy of Kennebunk, ME and 5 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at St. Phillips-By-the Sea Church in Fortunes Rocks Wednesday May 26 at 10:00 AM.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Salvation Army, 297 Cumberland Ave., Portland, ME 04101 in Raymond's memory.

Frank Hussey, 81

WELLS - Frank W. Hussey, 81 0f Coles Hill Road, died May 21, 2004 at his residence.

He was born in Somerville, MA on June 26, 1922, the son of Eugene D. and Pauline E. Cooper Hussey. He graduated from Dartmouth College earning his BA Degree and was a member of its Dragon Honor Society.

He served his country in the US Army during WWII.

Frank worked for Foot Flair in Manchester, N.H., United Shoe in Cincinati, Ohio and Dorson-Fleischer Shoe in Manchester, N.H. where he served as its Vice President and retired from there.

After his retirement, he moved to Florida where he worked as a Real Estate Agent for Downing-Frye Real Estate in Naples.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Patricia Bell Hussey of Wells; a son Peter C. of Portland; a daughter Heidi Hussey-Cone of Keene, N.H.; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, Research and Treatment of Pulmonary Fibrosis, 122 State Street, Augusta, Maine 04330. Lloyd Burt Sr., 88

ELIOT - Lloyd H. Burt Sr., 88, of Indian Rivers Road in Eliot, died at his home surrounded by his family on April 30, 2004.

Born on Dec. 2, 1915 on Long Island, New York. He was a son of Alden and Flora (Hall) Burt.

After his high school career he went on to earn a degree in agriculture from the University of New Hampshire. He also taught for a time at the university, where in 1943 he met and married his loving wife of more than 58 years, Rae Philice (Andrews) Burt.

He was employed for a time by the Dairy Herd Improvement Association based in New England. This took him all over New England visiting and testing animals at many farms. He truly enjoyed and became well acquainted with many farmers he worked with.

He and his wife settled in Eliot, where they founded and operated for many years, Indian Rivers Camp Ground. Although stricken with infantile polio he never let his disability prevent him from achieving anything he intended to accomplish, such as establishing and operating the camp ground from scratch, ice sailing, racing with the UNH Yacht Club, or his passion for swimming.

He was also employed for many years as a pasturizer for Strafford Farms in Dover. He was also a supervisor for Pace Industries in Portsmouth for a time and worked at JANCO in Rollinsford, N.H. before his retirement.

An active member of his community he served on the Eliot Board of Selectman, the Chamber of Commerce, working to get Route 236 named for Harold Dow, and the Eliot Grange. He was an active and beloved member of the Portsmouth Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He is survived by his loving family; four daughters, Diana Desjardins of Georgia, Sandra Genaw of Berwick, Marion Hall of Eliot and Vinnie DeVore of Florida; one son, Lloyd H. "Chip" Burt Jr.; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters.

He was predeceased by his wife Rae Philice (Andrews) Burt in 2001.

A funeral was held on Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Alumni Drive in Portsmouth, N.H.

Family flowers only - donations may be made in his memory to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints "Mission Fund," c/o Bishop Gong, 43 Evans Rd., Madbury, NH 03820.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Kathleen Dixon, 87

NEWCASTLE, Maine - Kathleen (McManus) Dixon, 87, most recently of Newcastle, Maine, and formerly of Rumson, N.J., died peacefully at home on May 3, 2004 surrounded by members of her family.

She was born in Elizabeth, N.J. on June 5, 1916, daughter of the late Ambrose and Katharine McManus. She attended the Vail-Deane School in Elizabeth, N.J. and the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Noroton, Conn.; she graduated from Vail-Deane in 1934. She also attended the Katherine Gibbs School in New York.

With her husband, John Gordon Dixon, she settled in Rumson, N.J. where they raised their seven children. She was a parishioner at Holy Cross Church in Rumson and a member of the Navesink Country Club in Middletown, N.J. For almost 40 years, she spent her summers on Great Pond in Belgrade Lakes, Maine. Since 1984, she has lived year-round in southern and mid-coast Maine, in the company of her family as well as friends old and new.

Predeceased by her husband John Gordon Dixon, she is survived by her seven children, John G. Dixon Jr. of Mount Vernon, Maine, Nancy Dixon Welch of Key Biscayne, Fla., Peter B. Dixon of Rumson, N.J., Stephen P. Dixon of Newcastle, Katherine Dixon Rose of San Anselmo, Calif., Edward A. Dixon of Scituate, Mass., Helen Y. (Hydi) Dixon of Kennebunk; by her four siblings, John G. McManus of Eliot, William W. McManus of Atlanta, Ga., Nancy M. Cole of Eliot, and Richard A. McManus of Newburyport, Mass.; as well as 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass in her honor will be offered on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Saint Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Newcastle, Maine.

Evelyn Grover, 91

ELIOT - Evelyn (Hutchins) Grover, 91, formerly of Tidy Road, passed away April 28, 2004 in the Kennebunk Nursing Home in Kennebunk.

She was born July 30, 1912 in North Berwick, a daughter of Herbert E. and Velma J. (Winn) Hutchins. She attended North Berwick High School and McIntosh Business College in Dover, N.H.

She worked for one year at York Extended Care and seven years at the Eliot Town Office.

In 1943 she married Archie E. Johnson. He passed away in 1970. She then married Charles Grover in 1977 and they lived in Eliot until after his death in 1987. She had lived in Kennebunk ever since.

She was pre-deceased by her two husbands, four sisters and one brother. She is survived by several cousins.

A funeral was held Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Interment was in the Woodlawn cemetery in South Berwick.

James Koufos, 75

SOMERSWORTH, N.H. - James "Jimmy" Koufos, 75, of Bernier Street, Somersworth, N.H. died April 27, 2004 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H.

He was born on May 30, 1928 in Somersworth, N.H., a son of Christos and Alexandria (Papakriste) Koufos. He was a graduate of Somersworth High School. He was a Korean War Veteran of the U.S. Army. After the service, he went on to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until retirement.

He served as the Post Commander of the American Legion in Somersworth. He was also a member of AHEPA.

He enjoyed life. He loved his family. In their words: "(He) leaves behind two grandchildren who he greatly loved, Nicholas who he often compared to his son Chris, a busy little boy full of energy and love, and Emily, his beautiful little Emmie he always called her." He also loved visiting with his friends and neighbors, sharing a beer and swapping stories.

He is survived by his loving wife Ann of 40 years; two sons, Dean Koufos of Somersworth, N.H. and Christos Koufos and his wife Tracy of Louden, N.H.; two sisters, Mary Pappey of Redding, Mass. and Freda and his brother-in-law Harry Sakas of Lake Hiawatha, N.J.; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church in Somersworth. Interment followed at the Greek Orthodox cemetery in Somersworth, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, PO Box 110, Tates Brook Road, Somersworth, NH 03878.

KENNEBUNK - Dorothy Morissette died Sept. 24, 2003. Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Main Street, Kennebunk with the Rev. Carol Strecker officiating.

Lorraine Stevens, 83

YORK - Lorraine Grace Stevens, 83, of York, passed away on April 27, 2004. born in New York City in 1921, she was a top fashion model featured in publications such as Life magazine, and worked with renowned fashion designers, Pauline Trigere, Adele Simpson, Omar Kiam, and Ben Reig for many years. She married her first husband Henri Pommier in New York City and raised four children in Westport, Conn. In 1977 she married Ralph Stevens of Kittery, and has been a resident of York for 20 years. Her brilliant blue eyes, set off by striking white hair, reflected the joy she experienced with her family and dear friends. She loved to cook, travel and spend time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by three sisters, and her four children: Michele Pommier Diel of Miami, Fla., Monica Kravitt of Katonah, N.Y., Denise Johnson of Cape Neddick, and Marc Pommier of Ogunquit; and her seven grandchildren, Danielle Johnson, Jessica Johnson, David Diel, Alexandra Kravitt, Jackie Diel, Max Pommier and Nathaniel Pommier.

A graveside service was held on Friday at the First Parish Cemetery, York.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909, Attn: Home Care and Skilled Nursing.

WELLS - Dorothy Diana Vannah died Jan. 6, 2004. A graveside committal service will be held at the Ocean View cemetery in Wells on Friday at 1 p.m.

KENNEBUNK - Lucille Velevis died Feb. 12, 2004. A graveside committal service will be held at the Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk on Friday at noon.

Leotina Wells, 92

WELLS - Leotina Wells, 92, died April 26, 2004 at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Attleboro, Mass., a daughter of Manuel and Deolinda (Augusta) Souza.

She had lived in Wells since 1957 coming there from Cambridge, Mass. and was a homemaker most of her life.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and enjoyed knitting.

Her husband, John L. Wells Sr., died in 1966. A brother, Joseph Souza, and a sister, Cecelia Austin also predeceased her.

Survivors include one son, John L. Wells, Jr. and his wife DonnaLee of Fremont, N.H.; one daughter, Helen Cousins of Wells; three brothers, Raymond of New Hampshire, Manuel of Wells, and Bernard of Hampton, N.H.; two sisters, Mary Fernandes of Cambridge, Mass., and Alice McGurty of Arlington, Mass.; three grandchildren, Rebecca Wells of Amherst, Mass., John Wells of Florida and Warren Cousins Jr. of Wells; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells, with Rev. Joseph Ford officiating. Burial was at the Woodlawn cemetery in Everett, Mass. on Monday.

Harold White, 86

KENNEBUNK - Harold E. White, 86, a resident of Sunset Terrace, Kennebunk, Maine, formerly of Naples, Fla. and Worcester, Mass., died April 26, 2004 in Kennebunk.

He was born June 7, 1917 in Worcester, Mass., the son of Elizabeth (Mars) White and Bertram White.

He attended Classical High School and was graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and also from its School of Industrial Management. He was a 50-Year Associate of WPI and a member of the President's Council. He was a registered professional engineer of the state of Massachusetts.

He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He was commissioned at Yale University and studied radar at Harvard University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Assigned to the China Burma Theatre, he reported to a base in Central India where the B-29 bombers were first stationed. Subsequently, he was transferred to the First Troop Carrier Squadron in Assam, India in support of Merrill's Marauders and later the Mars Task Force in the reopening of the Burma Road. He was Group Communications and Radar Officer in the Tenth Air Force at the end of the war and was transferred to China to assist in the relocation of Chaing Kai-Shek's troops to strategic locations in China during the Civil War.

Upon his return to the United States, he began his civilian career with the Norton Company in Worcester, Mass. as a factory engineer and rose in the engineering staff organizations to research director. He later transferred to the operating side of the business and relocated to Niagara Falls, Ontario as director of Furnace Plant Operations in North America.

After a short relocation back to Worcester, he was appointed manager director of the Norton Company operations in the United Kingdom. During his seven years in Europe, his assignments expanded and he became vice president and general manager of Northern Europe and was appointed a corporate officer of the company.

Relocation back to the United States included assignments as general manager of the Organic Division, general manager of Norton Company of Canada and general manager of the Coated Abrasive Division, with headquarters in Watervliet, N.Y.

Following retirement he continued employment as a management consultant and also served with the International Executive Service Corps in South America.

During his years living in Worcester County, he was a member of the Holden District Hospital Board of Trustees and a member of the Holden Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Patricia (Wallace) White of Kennebunk; two daughters, Patricia A. White of Cambridge, Mass. and Catherine E. (White) Gallagher of Surprise, Ariz.; one son, David S. White of Kennebunk; two granddaughters, Cynthia P. (White) Brown of Scarborough and Anne Maka Dakin of New York City; and two grandsons, Petty Officer Andrew D. White of the U.S. Coast Guard and Michael C. Maka of Nashua, N.H.; one great-granddaughter, Lucia Joy Dakin of New York City; and two great-grandsons, Samuel L. and Ryan A. Brown, both of Scarborough.

Burial services will be private. Contributions are recommended to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.
