At the age of 14 she worked toward a mission project in Rio Brazil, she spent many hours traveling to other churches and community groups, raising awareness of the struggle so many people faced there, and raising funds to support her trip. She and a group of other teens with a Christian Group traveled to Brazil for several weeks to assist in feeding street people, worked in orphanages, shared the Lord's message and performed plays for many groups. She truly had the heart of a servant.

She always enjoyed traveling and was not afraid even at a young age to board a plane and head to Florida or beyond to visit with her aunts and uncles, she enjoyed time with her family and being with her aunts, uncles and cousins.

She will be missed by so many, her loss will leave a void in her family forever.

Lt. Col. John Harrison Jr., 75

KENNEBUNK - John Frank Harrison Jr., 75, (1928-2004), a resident of Kennebunk, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2004, surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 16, 1928 in Manchester, N.H., the son of John Frank and Dorothy (Packard) Harrison.

The son of an engineer, he spent his early life and school years in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and Missouri. He graduated from Boston University with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1951 and completed his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation. He was a charter member of the Maine CPCU, teaching numerous certification classes. He also held the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation. He served on two governor's commissions on insurance, and numerous insurance advisory councils throughout his career. He was a former member of the board of directors of Grange Mutual Insurance Company of New Hampshire.

Early in his career, he worked for the Boston Old Colony Insurance Company as a special field agent with his long-time friend and mentor, Paul Goode. In 1958 he joined Joseph and Charles Cole at the Cole Agency Insurance of Kennebunk, retiring as the president of Cole-Harrison Agency in 2002 after 42 years in the industry.

He served on the board of directors of Ocean National Bank for 16 years, and as the board's chairman from 1990 until his retirement in 1997. He was passionately committed to the concept of independent community banking. Upon the merger of Ocean National Bank with an out-of-state bank holding company, he played an integral role founding Rivergreen Bank in Kennebunk in March, 2003, serving as its first chairman.

Retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Marine Corps in 1988, he served as the Commanding Officer of the 10th Engineering Company, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, headquartered in Portland. He joined the Marines in June 1946 and graduated from boot camp in Paris Island, S.C. He later attended Officersâ Candidate School, receiving his commission and subsequently serving in the Korean conflict.

He was also a past president of the Kennebunk Fire Society and a former member and chairman of the Kennebunk Board of Assessment Review. For many years he served as the treasurer of Kennebunk's Boy Scout Troop 304.

He was a modest and unassuming man who quietly assisted many in the community.

While his professional and civic responsibilities were many, his first devotion was to his family. At the time of his death, he lived with his beloved wife in their home of 46 years where they raised their eight children and joyfully oversaw their antics, their kidsâ friends, a menagerie of pets, and more recently their grandchildren. He taught all of his children to ski and, in the early 1970s, after spending years driving a station wagon of kids every weekend to various ski areas, he purchased a family ski camp in Carrabassett Valley. There was always room for one more at camp, and many weekends or school vacations saw camp filled wall-to-wall with his children and their friends. He later skied with many of his grandchildren at Sugarloaf, introducing them to his favorite sport and filling camp once again. He hung up his skis in 2003 after a skiing accident, but continued to spend many enjoyable times in the Valley.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Frances McCarthy Harrison of Kennebunk; one brother, Peter Harrison of Colchester, Vt. and Kennebunk. His eldest child, John Steven Harrison, predeceased him in December 2003.
