Leon McCrory, 80

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Leon M. "Mac" McCrory, 80, of Pleasantwood Estates, Old Orchard Beach, died June 24, 2004 at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Salem, Mass. on June 22, 1924, a son of Thomas and Mabel (McGrath) McCrory.

He was a Merchant Marine and Navy World War II veteran.

On Aug. 28, 1951, he married Sandra Cook in Old Orchard Beach.

He worked for many years as a construction superintendent in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. He specialized in the construction of high-rise buildings. He returned to Maine in 1976 and was employed with Everett Dobson and Sons Construction Company. He retired in 1989.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Saco.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years of Old Orchard Beach; two sons, Alan McCrory and his wife, Donna of Huntingtown, Md., and Michael McCrory and his wife, Ginnie of Biddeford; one daughter, Sharon Weeman and her husband, Larry of Kennebunk; six grandsons, Justin, Michael and Mark McCrory of Huntingtown, Md., Christian and Cameron McCrory of Biddeford, and Christopher Weeman of Kennebunkport; three granddaughters, Maile McCrory of Huntingtown, Md., and Megan and Mallory Weeman of Kennebunk.

There will be no funeral service.

As he wished, his body was donated to medical science.

A memorial ceremony will be held at a later date at the University of New England Medical School in Biddeford.

Mary Morton, 89

SEBAGO - Mary (Brooks) Morton, 89, of Sebago Lake Village, died June 28, 2004 at Springbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Westbrook.

She was born in Passaic, N.J. on Feb. 4, 1915, the daughter of Walter Stanley and Minnie (Brooks) Boynton.

She graduated from Smith College and had worked as a librarian at the University of Southern Maine, Baxter Library in Gorham and the Kennebunk Public Library.

She was also a homemaker all of her life.

Her husband, Rutledge Morton, died June 26, 2001.

Surviving are one son, Dana Rutledge Morton of Biddeford Pool; four daughters, Linda B. Hoppe of Falmouth, Sarah E. Morton of Ellsworth, Susan B. Watson of Standish, and Mary L. Medina of Arundel; one sister, Barbara King of Brunswick; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

There will be a private burial for the immediate family.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Baxter Park, 64 Balsam Dr., Millinocket, ME 04462.

Arrangements are under the care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Mary Scovill, 83

KENNEBUNK - Mary R. Scovill, 83, of Punta Gorda, Fla. passed away June 22, 2004.

She was the daughter of Kenneth and Viola (Porter) McIntosh, born Feb. 26, 1921 in Littleton, Maine. She graduated from Houlton High School. She worked for Dead River Oil Company in Houlton, as head bookkeeper for more than 30 years. She was an active member of the Methodist churches in Houlton, Wells, and Athol, Mass. She loved knitting children's sweaters, mittens and creating handmade patchwork quilts with all proceeds donated to her church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebeccas, and the Grange.

She is survived by one daughter, Joann (Harvey) Hoskin Goldstein of Punta Gorda; one step-daughter, Patricia Estabrook; one stepson, John (Gail) Scovill of Houlton; one sister, Phyllis Nelder of Brookline, Mass.; one brother, Herschel (Mildred) McIntosh of Houlton, Mass.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by first husband Lt. Harold E. Hoskin, U.S. Army Air Corps World War II and second husband C. Gerald Scovill; sister Ada V. McIntosh.

Eva Shaw, 76

WELLS - Eva W.M. Shaw, 76, of Valley Road, died June 28, 2004 at York Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in St. John, New Brunswick on Aug. 16, 1927, a daughter of Alfred and Gladys (Calvin) Wickens. She graduated from St. John High School.

She enjoyed spending time with her family. She was an avid reader. She also enjoyed the ocean and trips to the mountains.

She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Arnie; two sons, William A. Shaw and his wife Donna of Peachtree City, Ga., and Stephen M. Shaw and his wife Nancy of Tewksbury, Mass.; two daughters, Brenda Carol Bowdridge of Tewksbury, Mass., and Linda Mae Gilberg and her husband Richard of Lynn, Mass.; two brothers, Arnold and James Wickens; one sister, Christina Baston; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells, with the Rev. Bob Cole officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to York Hospital, Attn: Donations, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Philip Stevens, 38

KENNEBUNK - Philip Lyman Stevens, the son of Pendleton Stevens of Kennebunk and the late Alix Loree Stevens, died unexpectedly on June 19, 2004 in San Diego, Calif.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1965 in New Jersey and lived there until 1978 when his family moved to California. He graduated from Grant High School in North Hollywood, Calif. and entered the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, Calif. in 1983. He received training as an air traffic controller and was stationed at Yuma, Ariz. until his discharge in 1987.

He graduated from the San Diego State University in 1992 with a degree in business administration and was employed as a traveling auditor for Foodmaker. He preferred outdoor work so he created Crystal Clear, a pool maintenance and repair business in the San Diego area. A back injury prevented him from continuing the work that he enjoyed and most recently he was employed by Prudential Life Insurance Company.

In August 2003 he married Gina Jacob. They were involved with their church where he studied and taught classes on the Bible and they felt supported by their faith and church community.

He loved the California weather and casual lifestyle. He enjoyed walking his dog on the beach, mountain biking, skiing, and restoring his old Porsche. He was very bright and an avid reader with an amazing vocabulary and mind full of interesting trivia. He had a quick wit with a penchant for giving useful but humorous gifts.

His mother died in 1980.

He is survived by his wife Gina (Jacob) Stevens of San Diego, Calif.; friend and former wife, Michelle Chaney Lobo of Escondido, Calif.; his father, Pen and stepmother Dorothy, a brother, Edwin and one sister, Alice, all of Kennebunk; a brother, Mark, sister-in-law, Anne, nephews Zach and Max, of Lexington, Mass.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends from all over the United States.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday July 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Route 1, Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to Sweetzer for its Adult Community Services, 50 Moody St., Saco, ME 04072.

Leone Maling, 74

LYMAN - Leone M. Maling, 74, of Country Way, Lyman, died July 3, 2004 at Evergreen Manor in Saco.

She was born in Rockland on July 29, 1929, a daughter of Herbert and Katrina (Smith) Baum.

She attended local schools and graduated from Kennebunk High School.

She was a homemaker for most of her life. She was a member of the Lower Village Mothers Club and was a loving mother and grandmother.

A brother, Herbert Baum II predeceased her in 2004.

She is survived by her husband, Milton G. Maling of Lyman; one son, Milton G. Maling Jr. of Kennebunkport; one daughter, Linda Shelley and her husband, John of Lyman; one granddaughter, Shelley Alley and her husband Dave of Cleveland, N.Y.; one great-granddaughter, Jessie Gage of Lyman; two great-grandsons, Jason Gage of Cleveland, N.Y. and Zachary Gage of Stratham, N.H.; one sister, Mrs. Robert Gould of Kennebunk; and seven nieces and nephews.

There will be a private graveside service only.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Goodwins Mills Fire & Rescue, 481 Goodwins Mills Rd., Lyman, ME 04002.

Frances Mitchell, 76

OGUNQUIT - Frances T. Mitchell, 76, of New Hope, PA. and Ogunquit, died July 4, 2004 at York Hospital.

She was born in Pawtucket, R.I. on March 20, 1928, a daughter of Mary E. Lyons, and graduated from Rhode Island College of Education.

She was a homemaker for most of her life and had summered in Ogunquit since 1982.

Her husband, Bradford W. Mitchell died June 1, 1998.

Surviving are three sons, Mark of Harleysville, Pa., Scott of West Chelmsford, Mass. and Patrick of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Paula Robinson of Warrington, Pa. and Kristen McPherson of Glenside, Pa.; one sister, Betty Fernandez of Exeter, N.H.; and 10 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at St. Mary's Church, Wells. Burial was at Pleasant Hill cemetery in Sabattus.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to: York Hospital, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are under the care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Caitlin Rotchford, 48

NEW VERNON, N.J. - Caitlin (Cofer) Rotchford, 48, a resident of New Vernon, N.J. died June 30, 2004 after a long struggle with multiple system atrophy.

She had vacationed at Goose Rocks Beach all her life.

She attended Westfield, N.J. schools, Phillips Andover and Brown University. She enjoyed a 25-year career as a publishing executive specializing in educational books for children. She was president of Pearson Learning, president of Modern Curriculum Press and executive vice president of Prentice Hall College. She began her career at AT&T and retired for health reasons as president of Weekly Reader.

She is survived by her husband Brian G. Rotchford of New Vernon, N.J.; two sons, Peter and Jamie; her mother, Dorcas Cohen of New York City and Kennebunkport; her father, Frederick J. Cofer of Westfield; one sister, Lisa Gonnelia of Westfield; one brother, James H. Cofer of Old Greenwich, Conn.; her stepfather, D. S.J. Cohen; her stepmother, Faith M. Cofer; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mary Stoddard, 68

KITTERY - Mary B. "Bernie" Stoddard, 68, of Ash Drive in Kittery died suddenly at her home on June 28, 2004.

Born in Worcester, Mass. on Feb. 29, 1936, she was a daughter of Jack and Edna (Green) Lamson, and attended local schools.

She was employed for many years by the city of Worcester in the Code Enforcement Division of City Hall. Following her employment in Worcester she was employed at Spofford House in Spofford, N.H. as a substance abuse counselor and also shared her talents with the court system in Keene, N.H., working to provide substance abuse guidance and treatment for those mandated by the courts. She worked for a time at Frisbee Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H., also providing substance abuse services.

She enjoyed more than 20 years of marriage with her loving husband Mr. Harold M. Stoddard. Together they made their home in York for many years; first at the Nubble and for years after, on Saltwater Drive, most recently they have made their home in Kittery. They also enjoyed a home in Ft. Pierce, Fla. for more than 15 years. She was a faithful member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 27 years. She served her community as a devoted member of St. Christopher's Church in York.

Her first love however was her family. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her, including her husband Harold M. Stoddard of Kittery; two daughters, Ann Emery of Ipswich, Mass. and Jennifer Bouler of Sterling, Mass.; one son, Michael Mooney of Ware, Mass.; one step-son, Jay Stoddard of Jamestown, N.Y.; two brothers, John Lamson of Vernon, Conn. and Paul Lamson of Holden, Mass.; and her seven beloved grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Allison and Erin Stoddard, Kirby and Meghan Johnson and Erin Mooney.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday with Rev. Fr. Colpitts officiating at her church, St. Christopher Parish Church in York.

Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to York Hospital Memorial Fund, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Joan Wilson, 72

ALFRED - Joan Marie Wilson, 72, of Keywood Manor Park in Alfred, died suddenly on July 1, 2004 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, surrounded by her family.

Born in Newton, Mass. on Nov. 5, 1931, she was a daughter of Margaret and the late Edward Wilson. She attended schools and was raised in Newton until she married. She and her husband moved to York Village, for a time, returning to Massachusetts to make their home and raise a family in Franklin, Mass., where she leaves many good friends. She currently resided in Alfred, where she has shared her home and cared for her 100-year-old mother and enjoyed the company of many wonderful friends.

She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her including her loving family, her mother Margaret Wilson of Alfred; two daughters and their families, Donna and her husband Tom Chase of York, and Deborah Grinnell and her husband Joe of Monmouth; three sons, Daniel and his wife Kathy Wilson of Livermore Falls, Dennis Wilson of Cape Neddick and Dean Wilson of Sanford; seven grandchildren, James Wilson, Sabrina and Peter Grinnell, Kelly Blue, Roger, TJ, and Melissa Chase; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua, Harly and Taylor Wilson and Alicia Blue and Kiyla and Olivia Chase; one brother, Bill and his wife Rosemary Wilson; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday at St. Raphael Parish Church. Whipple Road, Kittery with Rev. Fr. Real Nadeau officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Eliot. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Arthur Beal, 80

GROTON, Conn. - Arthur Blackburn Beal, 80, a Groton, Conn. resident, retired U.S. Navy A.O.C. and World War II veteran, died peacefully on the Fourth of July, 2004 at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer with his daughters by his side. He was the husband of the late Isabel (Collier) Beal who died in 2004 after 57 years of marriage.

He was born in Millinocket on Sept. 13, 1923, the son of Dr. George Napoleon Beal and Agnes (Norton) Beal of Beals Island and the great-grandson of Tall Barney Beal, "Gentle Giant" and Maine folk hero of Beals Island. He graduated from Deland High School in Deland, Fla., where he was a member of the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society. He subsequently entered the U.S. Navy, and at the age of 18 became aviation ordinance chief, one of the youngest officers to ever achieve this rank. He served on the USS Ranger (C-4), a World War II aircraft carrier and infamous "ghost ship" that sank five German ships after Axis U-Boat commander Otto von Bulow believed he had "sunk" her in 1943.

After retiring from the Navy in 1961, the Beal family moved to the Floyd family homestead on Barralock Hill Farm, where he opened Beal's Radiator Shop. He had many diverse hobbies, including computing, sailing, winemaking, beekeeping, collecting and restoring antique cars, and photography. He was an avid ham radio enthusiast, broadcasting internationally as operator WBIGCE and holding the handle "Wet Bottom." He was a member of the USS Ranger (CV-4) Reunion Group, the Navy Amateur Radio Club, the Beals Historical Society, the Groton Historical Society, the Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society, and was a friend of the Union Congregational Church of Groton.

He was well known as a great storyteller with unique timing and a wry choice of words. He held a distinction for being unconventional, including piercing his own ear and displaying a diamond earring, a naval tradition for crossing the equator aboard ship. He was proud of his military service, and often marched in the Veteran's Day parade through Groton. He also had a notable appetite for Maine lobster, a habit frequently satisfied by his son-in-law lobsterman.

He is survived by two daughters, Marcia Beal Brazer and her husband Normal Jr. of Ogunquit, and Deborah Beal Normandin and her husband Eugene of Lunenburg; one sister, Ella Hyde of South Royalton, Vt.; two grandchildren, Sarah Brazer Campbell and her husband Chad of Lanai, Hawaii, and Dr. William Fletcher Brazer and his wife Sara Melissa of New Milford, Conn.; three great-grandchildren, Isabel Ke'alohilani Campbell and Lauren Ki'linahc Campbell of Lani, Hawaii, and Jack Benjamin Brazer of New Milford, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Badger's Funeral Home, 45 School St., Groton, Conn. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Union Congregational Church, Main Street, Groton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beals Historical Society, PO Box 280, Beals Island, ME 04611, or to the Sea Coast Mission, 127 West St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Burial will be at the Groton cemetery.

Arrangements are made by Badger's Funeral Home in Groton, Conn.
