Althine Watson

OGUNQUIT - Althine B. Watson, 92, of Ocean Street, died Tuesday (listed Thursday, November 4, 1999) at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery after a brief illness.

She was born June 14, 1907 in Bath, a daughter of Leonard M. and Grace Small Munsey, and was a 1929 graduate of Morse High School and Gorham Normal School, Class of 1927.

Her long teaching career began in 1927 in the one room Wells Division 4 School in Moody, where she taught grades 1-8 for three years. She then taught grades 1 and 2 at the Ogunquit Village School and was principal there until 1940. She then served as a substitute teacher in Wells, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, York and North Berwick. In 1950 she accepted a position as a grade 6 teacher in the York School for four years.

She then remarried and moved to Kennebunk and served as clerk for her husband, who owned and ran the Kennebunk Star newspaper.

In 1958 she taught a seventh-grade class of 41 challenging students who had seven different teachers in 12 weeks . In the fall of 1958 she was elected to be the English Department at Wells Junior High School. She retired from teaching in 1972 after 37 years.

During the summers, Mrs. Watson worked as a waitress at the Poland Spring House and Ogunquit Lookout Hotel, clerked in the Ogunquit Post Office, and was a bookkeeper for the Ogunquit Pharmacy and Maxwell's Store.

An active community member, she served the Town of Ogunquit as its town clerk for 10 years, the budget committee for 10 years, as chairman of the Wells 300th Anniversary Publicity and Budget committees. She also volunteered with F.I.S.H., VITA, formed a Campfire and Girl Scout troops, served as president of the Wells-Ogunquit PTA, and during her tenure brought driver education into the school.

Mrs. Watson did reporting for the Portland Press Herald, Portland Sunday Telegram, Biddeford Journal, Portsmouth Herald, York Weekly, and York County Coast Star from 1927 to 1998.

A 66-year active member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church and the Ladies Aid, she served as president of the York Audubon Club, was a member of the Maine Retired Teachers Association, AARP, Ogunquit Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Waban Projects, Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm, Kennebunk Animal Shelter, Ogunquit Women's Club, Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, Ogunquit Rotary Club and the Ogunquit Art Association.

Her husband, Willis Watson, died in 1963.

Survivors include her son, Leonard W. Wyman of Ogunquit; two stepsons, David Watson of Aurora, Colo., and Hubert Watson of Saco; and a stepdaughter, Dorothy Pillsbury of Kennebunk.

BERTHA MARTA, died Oct. 30, 1999 in Biddeford. There are no calling hours. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Church, Lawrence, Mass. Burial in Saint Mary's Cemetery. FOGARTY

JEROME, 39, died in Utsunomiya, Japan Oct. 17, 1999 after a brief illness. Memorial Mass 10 a.m. Saturday at St, Mary's Church, Biddeford. Arrangements by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford.

WATSON

ALTHINE B., of Ogunquit, died Nov. 2, 1999 in Kittery. Visiting hours 4-7 p.m. Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, the Rev. David Clard officiating. Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Ogunquit Fire Dept. Women's Auxiliary, c/o Donna Howe, P.O. Box 525, Ogunquit, 03907.

LAMONTAGNE

FRANCIS "NIG," died Nov. 2, 1999 in Kennebunk. Gathering of friends and relatives 4-7 p.m. Friday at the home of Edward and Nancy Meehan, 33 Fletcher St., Kennebunk. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport Little League, P.O. Box 1600, Kennebunk 04043 or to Hospice, Southern Maine Home & Healthcare, P.O. Box 739, Kennebunk. Arrangements by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.

ELEANOR J., of Parsonsfield, died Nov. 1, 1999 in Brookline, Mass. Memorial gathering 2 p.m. Saturday at the North Parsonsfield Public Library, the Rev. J. Bradbury Mitchell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the library or First Church of Christ Scientist, Fryeburg. Arrangements by Heald Funeral Home, Limerick Chapel.

RICHARD F., of Lyman, died Nov. 2, 1999 in Biddeford. AURORE M., died Nov. 3, 1999 in Biddeford. Visiting hours 3-8 p.m. Friday at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Andre's Church. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

BEVERLY, formerly of Old Orchard Beach, died Nov. 3, 1999 in Gorham. Ted Poland of the Washington Avenue United Methodist Church officiating. Burial in Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery.

POWERS

M. GWENDOLYN, 85, died Nov. 3, 1999 in Georgetown. She was born Nov. 21, 1913 in Arlington Heights, Mass., a daughter of Frederick R. and Laura E. (Davies) Harvey, and was a graduate of Jamaica Plain High School. On Sept. 7, 1932 she married George A. Powers. She was active in the Robinhood Church, where she was secretary and treasurer for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bath. Mrs. Powers enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, knitting, gardening and reading. Her husband died July 31, 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Edith L. Robinson of Topsham and Faith J. Snowden of Bath; two sons, George H. of Lewiston and Robert E. of Waterboro; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grand{-D} children. At her request there will be no funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church Children's Fund, 9 Beacon St., Bath, 04530. Arrangements by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath.

David Lucas

SANFORD -- David Lucas, 44, of Sanford died early Wednesday (listed Thursday, March 2, 2000) at his home.

He was born Oct. 13, 1955 in Marlboro, Mass., a son of Frank and Doris Guilbert Lucas.

Mr. Lucas was the owner and operator of Lucas Country Store in Sanford.

An Air Force veteran, he served from 1971 to 1975 and attained the rank of airman first class.

Mr. Lucas was an avid outdoorsman and involved with the efforts to restore the wild turkey in the State of Maine, a bird he considered the most beautiful of God's creatures. He spent time educating anyone who would listen about the importance of good hunting practices and the appreciation of land conservation for turkeys, as well as any other wildlife.

In addition to spending time at his cabin up north in Masardis, Mr. Lucas was a representative of Quaker Boy products and enjoyed sparking the interest of others to become involved with turkey calling.

A registered Maine Guide, he often he took people out on turkey and deer hunting expeditions.

He was president of the Maine Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, a state director of the National Bowhunter Education Foundation and founding past president of the York County Beards and Spurs Wild Turkey Federation.

Mr. Lucas was also a member of the Sanford/Springvale Fish and Game Association, the Sanford/Springvale American Legion.

Surviving are his wife Mary Lucas of Sanford; two sons, Ben and Jesse; a daughter, Michelle Lucas of Nova Scotia and grandson Cody of Nova Scotia; his father Frank Lucas of Westboro, Mass; three brothers, Paul Lucas of Somersworth, N.H., Scott Ricker of Westfield, Mass. and Michael Lucas-Madeiras of Wainne, Hawaii; three sisters, Janet Lucas-Valery of Ashley Falls, Mass., Rose-Marie Hall of Wheelwright, Mass. and Lisa Mascroft of Treasure Island, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John Jones

SANFORD -- John R. Jones, 83, of Breary Farm died Sunday (listed Thursday, March 2, 2000) at H.D. Goodall Hospital.

He was born in Boston, Mass. on Oct. we, 1916, the son of John R. and Emeline F. Holman Jones and lived most of his adult life in Cambridge, Mass.

Mr. Jones was employed as an automobile mechanic for Andelman Auto Services in Massachusetts before retiring and moving to North Berwick in 1973.

Fond of woodworking, Mr. Jones was also talented in art.

He was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte Chingo Jones in 1989.

Surviving are three sons, David W. Jones of Billerica, Mass, John F. Jones of Lowell, Mass. and Peter R. Jones of Wells; one daughter, Charlotte A. Prentice of Arlington, Mass; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Agnes Norwood

SACO -- Agnes Esther Norwood, 88, of Charles Street, died Wednesday (listed Thursday, March 2, 2000) at the Gorham House in Gorham.

She was born in Saco, March 28, 1911, a daughter of Edward William and Nellie Lowell Curran. She graduated from Thornton Academy in 1931.

She moved to Charles Street in 1961 and lived there for more than 35 years.

She was a member of the United Baptist Church, Saco and past president of the Bradford Chapter DeMolay mothers club, Old Orchard Beach.

She enjoyed outside work and gardening.

She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Norwood, who died in 1980.

She is survived by two nephews and three nieces.

LUCAS

DAVID died Wednesday (listed Thursday, March 2, 2000) in Sanford. Visiting hours 6-8 p.m. tonight at the Heald Funeral Home, 61 Main St. Springvale, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Jim McAtee and Pastor Rick Leach officiating.

NORWOOD

AGNES of Saco died March 1, 2000 in Gorham. Visiting hours 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home, 13 Portland Rd., Buxton. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Frances Porter and Dr. Burton Howe will officiate. Spring burial will be in South Buxton Cemetery.

Sandra Camire

WELLS -- Sandra L. Camire, 56, of Burnt Mill Road, died Saturday (listed Thursday, May 11, 2000) at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kennebunk.

She was born Jan. 28, 1944 in Rochester, N.H., a daughter of George R. and Rita Burbank Lord, and educated in Rochester and Somersworth schools.

Mrs. Camire was a former employee of the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Berwick Estates and Atria of Kennebunk, where her former co-workers say she was a kind, caring and compassionate person.

Her interests included gardening, especially her flowers, collecting antiques, reading and spending time with her husband fishing. She was an avid supporter of the Animal Welfare Society in West Kennebunk and sponsored a child with the International Children's Fund.

Survivors include her husband, Dannie R. Camire of Wells; her mother of South Berwick; a stepson, Louis R. of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews.
