Elizabeth Wooldridge, 80

OGUNQUIT - Elizabeth H. "Betty" (Howard) Wooldridge, 80, of Ogunquit and formerly of Wollaston, Mass., died June 3, 2004 after a lengthy battle with osteoporosis and lymphoma. She died peacefully at home in Ogunquit surrounded by her family looking out at the Marginal Way and the crashing of the ocean waves.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1923, a daughter of Herbert and Olive (Wood) Howard.

She was educated in the Quincy, Mass. School System and the Chandler School of Boston.

She was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed the many aspects of motherhood and even more so as a special Nana. She had previously worked as a secretary at John Hancock Insurance, Northeastern University and Bethany Congregational Church in Quincy, Mass.

She did extensive volunteer work in Quincy, Mass. which included PSSB Social Welfare Agency and the Senior Housing Center at 1000 S. Artery.

She married Roy L. Wooldridge on Dec. 14, 1951.

She and her husband retired to their "special place by the sea" in 1989. Upon their retirement she volunteered with Project Love at the Ogunquit Village School where she became lovingly known as Mrs. Woolie. She also became a volunteer for the York Hospital Gift Shop.

She will be sorely missed by her family.

Surviving are her husband of Ogunquit; loving mother of Ann E. (Wooldridge) Gillespie and Scott M. Gillespie of Marshfield, Mass., and Janice L. Wooldridge of Moody; devoted Nana of Meredith A. and Samuel R. Gillespie of Marshfield, Mass. and Emilee H. Wooldridge of Moody; loving sister of Richard A. Howard of Bluebell, Pa., and previously deceased brother Lawrence W. Howard of Lake Worth, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. Peter's By the Sea at Cape Neddick with Rev. David Holyrod officiating.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests gifts be given in her memory to York Hospital, Attn. Fund Raising, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells, ME 04090.

Marvin Smith

OGUNQUIT - Marvin M. Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Ogunquit, Maine, formerly of Cranston, R.I., a retired executive, died June 3, 2004 at the Fall River home of his son, Robert Smith. His son also maintains a home in Cranston, R.I.

He was the husband of Marcia (Brooks) Smith. born in Boston, a son of the late Jacob and Mae (Weiner) Smith, he had lived in Cranston, R.I. for many years before moving permanently to his summer home in Ogunquit, and his winter home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

He had been CEO of the former Kelly's Sporting Goods Inc., which he founded for 40 years, retiring in 1995, and also retained ownership of the real estate complex on Sockanossett Crossroads.

He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific aboard the USS Cepheis as a seaman first class, and was involved in the invasion of Okinawa.

He enjoyed four very happy years working at Harbor Candy in Ogunquit.

He was a member of Temple Beth-El in Fall River, Mass., and Congregation ETZ Chaim, Biddeford.

He was a member of Mount Hope Lodge of the Masons, Fall River, Mass., and the York Lodge of Elks.

He was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Fall River, Mass., and a member of the Cape Neddick Country Club.

He supported and sponsored several religious, community and youth leagues throughout the state of Rhode Island. He was also a supporter of the West Kennebunk Animal Shelter and the Perkins Cove Rotary Park.

Besides his wife and son Robert, he leaves another son, Joel Smith of La Jolla, Calif.; one brother, Arthur Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

He was the twin brother of the late Barbara Stearns.

A private burial was held Friday in Beth-El Cemetery, Fall River. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ogunquit.

Jim Case, 60

WELLS - Jim B. Case, 60, of Canterbury Road, died May 30, 2004 at a Portland hospital.

He was born in Amarillo, Texas on March 16, 1944, a son of Charlie and Nadine Beatrice (Neatherlin) Case and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell with a BS degree in engineering.

He worked as an engineer at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 18 years, and he enjoyed playing Blue Grass music and fishing.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He married Maureen Lynch on June 6, 1970.

He is survived by his wife of Wells; his mother of Anson, Texas; two daughters, Wendy Case of Belmont, Mass. and Susan Case of Wells; and one brother, Wendall Case of Anson, Texas.

There will be no services at this time.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

John Downing, 71

KENNEBUNKPORT - John C. Downing, 71, formerly of Grandview Road, E. Greenwich, R.I. died May 31, 2004 at St. Elizabeth Home, in E. Greenwich, R.I. He was husband of the late Joan C. (Donovan) Downing.

Born in Malden, Mass., a son of the late John C. and Alice B. (Douglas) Downing, he had lived in E. Greenwich for 20 years, summered in Kennebunkport, Maine for 30 years and had wintered in Bradenton, Fla. for three years.

He was a dedicated employee of New England Electric for 43 years, starting his career as a lineman in Boston and retiring as a vice-president of Narragansett Electric in 1993.

He was a 1951 graduate of Malden Catholic High School, and a 1962 graduate of Northeastern University with a bachelor of science in business administration.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 3rd Infantry Division stationed out of Indiantown Gap, Pa. He was an active and often colorful member of the N. Kingstown, R.I. Rotary Club, was a long-time sponsor of Save the Children and the Malden Catholic Alumni Fund.

He is survived by three sons, Mark C. Downing of Dedham, Mass., John C. Downing of E. Greenwich, R.I., and Mike C. Downing of Kennebunkport; one daughter, M. Catherine Black of E. Greenwich, R.I.; two brothers, William Downing of Medford, Mass., and Fred Downing of Gloucester, Mass.; one sister, Dorothy Fleming of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday in Our Lady of Mercy Church, E. Greenwich. Burial with military honors was in R.I. Veterans Cemetery.

Marie Kehoe, 90

KENNEBUNKPORT - Marie E. Kehoe, 90, wife of the late Laurence F. (Larry) Kehoe, died June 2, 2004.

She was born in Frenchville, March 30, 1914, the daughter of Marcel Raymond and Flavie (Gauvin) Raymond. Her childhood years were spent in Frenchville and Eagle Lake, Maine. At the age of 19 she moved to Old Town, where she lived for 43 years. After her marriage to Larry Kehoe in 1975, she moved to Kennebunkport, where she and Larry had a very happy life until his death in 1998. She then moved to Indiana to be with her daughter. She loved to sew, and throughout her life made lots of her own clothing. She had many other hobbies, including writing poems, crocheting and collecting dolls that she made the clothing for. Her favorite job was in the flower department at the W.T. Grant Store, where she met many people and excelled at creating beautiful flower arrangements. She always had a ready smile and willingness to give a helping hand. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by one daughter, Carol A. Clark of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two brothers, Leo Raymond and his wife Shirley of Old Town, and Norman Raymond of Sulphur, La.; two sisters, Janet McPherson of Connecticut and Thelma Alkas and her husband Sam of Connecticut; three grandchildren, Kristina Gauthier of Vilonia, Ark., Andy Gauthier and his wife Lynette of Hampden and Marsha Cyr and her husband Glen of No. Yarmouth; and four great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Emelda Perry and Annette Waye, and three brothers David Raymond, Ernest (Don) Raymond, and Gilman Raymond.

A memorial mass was celebrated on Monday at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 10700 Abiote Center Rd., Ft. Wayne, Ind. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk at a later date.

Donna Crawford, 74

WELLS - Donna (Ringquist) Crawford, 74, a resident of Stephen Eaton Lane, Wells formerly of Paxton and Worcester, Mass., died June 7, 2004 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief illness.

She was born in Worcester, Mass. on Nov. 21, 1930, the daughter of Eignar and Ethel (Gafvert) Ringquist. She graduated from North High School in Worcester, Mass. and Leslie University in Boston, Mass., where she received an associate's degree in childhood education.

She was the director of the Greendale Nursery School in Worcester, Mass.

She belonged to the Eastern Star Madonna Chapter of West Kennebunk and the Arundel Beach Club.

She loved the beach, stories about Worcester, Mass. and also spending time with her grandchildren and her family.

She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Sidney Crawford of Wells, who she met in the fourth grade; three sons, Jeffery C. Crawford of Florida, Christopher K. Crawford and his wife Karen of Worcester, Mass., and Jay S. Crawford of Kennebunk; and four grandchildren.

Eastern Star services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, where a memorial services will be following with the Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Rd., South Portland, ME 04106 in Mrs. Crawford's memory.

Charlotte Niles, 83

KITTERY - Charlotte A. Niles, 83 of Shapleigh Road in Kittery, died on June 1, 2004 at York Hospital.

Born in Kittery Point on Nov. 30, 1920. She attended local schools graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1938, as class valedictorian and secretary.

In 1940 she met and married her loving husband Ralph D. Dickerman. They made their home in Kittery Point until his death in 1958. She later met and in 1961 married her husband Norman N. Niles, they made their home in Kittery together until his death in 1998.

She enjoyed handiwork and was especially skilled at crocheting. Many of her family members were the beneficiaries of her skill, enjoying quilts and afghans for many happy occasions.

She was a member of the First Christian Church at Kittery Point for many years.

She will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, and for her special fondness for her grand- and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte and her husband Raymond Coury of York, and Carol and her husband Doug Kenyon of Chelmsford, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Dale Avery, Mark Avery, Dana Avery, Barbara Blue, Phil DeSoto, Doug Kenyon III, and Carey Ducharme; nine great-grandchildren Mark, Jennifer, Jeffery and Lindsay Avery, Marianna and Brianna DeSoto and Tyler, Paxton and Chloe Ducharme; one sister, Elsie May O'Brien; one half-brother, Edward Storer of York; and aunt Hannah McCloud of Kittery Point.

She was predeceased by an uncle with whom she was very close, Edward McCloud.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Baptist cemetery in Kittery Point, with the Rev. Brad Hirst officiating.

Nancy J. Sanborn, 62

ELIOT - Nancy J. Sanborn, 62, of Pleasant Avenue in Eliot, died on June 4, 2004 in Dover, N.H. following a period of failing health.

Born in Kittery on Sept. 28, 1941, she was a daughter of Thomas Howard Ferguson and Thelma May (Grant) Ferguson. She was raised in Kittery and attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1959.

She will, among many other things, be remembered for her love of music, especially country music as well as her wonderful singing voice. She often enjoyed singing at the Kittery Grange and with her church choir. Although country music was a favorite, her deepest appreciation for music was with gospel singing especially that of her dear friend Ken Fernald. She rarely missed a local concert and was often comforted by his music.

She was an active member of her church, the Second Christian Congregational Church UCC of Kittery, for many years. She was a Doorkeeper, and loved singing with the choir.

She worked in the hospitality industry for many years at Valley's in Kittery where she was a hostess and member of the wait staff. She also worked for a time at Fryday's Fish in Eliot and she enjoyed her contact with the people she served and the many friends she made at work.

She was an avid bingo player, enjoying games all over the Seacoast especially at the Frank Jones Center in Portsmouth. She was also a member of the Country Music Association.

She is survived by her loving family and will be dearly missed by her mother, Thelma M. Ferguson of Portsmouth, N.H.; one daughter, Denise L. Lago and her fiancˇ James Gaunya of Rochester, N.H.; two sons, Tom Sanborn and his wife Martine of Salisbury, Mass., and Jim Sanborn and his wife Donna of South Berwick; two sisters, Brenda Coleman and her husband Dick of Cerritos, Calif., and Cindy Boyd and her husband Sonny of Kittery; eight grandchildren, Lorin Danner and her husband Rob, Becky Lago, Jill Kazee-Locke, Nikki, Maggie, Kimmy, Celine and Cameron Sanborn; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Kaitlyn Sanborn; as well as aunt and uncles, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father and her brother James W. Ferguson.

A funeral was held at her church, Second Christian Congregational Church UCC on Government Street, in Kittery Tuesday with burial following in Orchard Grove cemetery in Kittery.

Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Rd., Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Donald Eaton Jr., 74

NORTH BERWICK - Donald H. Eaton Jr., 74, of Elm Street, passed away quietly June 5, 2004 in Varney Crossing Nursing Center after a 13-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

He was born Feb. 21, 1930 in Dover, N.H., a son of Donald H. and Dorothy (Slack) Eaton Sr. He was a 1949 graduate of North Berwick High School.

He worked as a Grade 1 operator at General Electric in Somersworth, N.H. before retiring in 1992. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed camping.

He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Yorkshire Lodge 142 AF & AM of North Berwick, the American Legion Quint Cheney Post 87 and a member of the Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick.

He and his wife, Alice (VanHof) Eaton, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, of North Berwick; one daughter, Linda Hills and her husband, George of Bradenton, Fla.; one brother, Lisle Eaton and one sister, Priscilla Jane Eldridge, both of North Berwick.

A funeral was held Wednesday at the Bethel Christian Church with Rev. Robert G. Cole, Sr. officiating. Interment was in the Ocean View cemetery in Wells.
