William Scarborough Sr., 85

KENNEBUNK - William B. Scarborough Sr., 85, died on June 1, 2004 at Huntington Commom, Kennebunk, surrounded by his loving family. He had lived at Huntington Common for the last five years where he was cared for by the devoted staff at Bradford on the Common.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1918 in Englewood, N.J., son of the late William B. Scarborough and Dorothy S. Scarborough. His youth in Englewood and Kennebunkport was filled with many adventures and wonderful times with his boyhood friends, the stories of which he loved to share with his children and grandchildren. He graduated from the Brooks School in North Andover, Mass., then from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., class of 1942. He interrupted his studies at Williams to enlist in the United States Army Air Force. He rose to the rank of captain as an engineering officer dedicated to the maintenance and repair of long-range bombers. He served in the Pacific Theatre primarily on the Philippine Islands for the duration of World War II. Although his graduation was delayed by his war service he was still considered a member of the class of 1942 and was always as active as he could be in Williams alumni activities with a number of his dearest college and sporting friends.

He started his family in Williamstown after World War II and in 1960 he moved wife Betsey and four children to West Simsbury, Conn. There he worked in sales in the school equipment industry throughout the '60s, '70s, and into the early '80s.

His greatest passions in life were his love of family and friends and the pleasure he derived from the great outdoors. This was especially so as he grew up and lived a part of each year of his life in the state of Maine where as a young man he was very proud to have fought the great fire of 1947, and as a father introduced his children to all the natural wonders on the coast of Maine.

As a lifelong sportsman and outdoorsman he loved to ocean fish for mackerel, stripers, and blues (when they came back) and he traveled the world with great friends in pursuit of salmon and trout. He skied with the original National Ski Patrol as a young man, and reveled in teaching all of his children to ski. He was a member of the Simsbury Fish and Game Club, the Sportsmans' Club of Hartford, and a lifelong member of the Kennebunk River Club where he served as both commodore and director. He was a devoted lifelong parishioner of St. Ann's Church, Kennebunkport where he served on the vestry for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betsey (Rimmer) Scarborough of Simsbury, Conn. and Kennebunkport, Maine; his four children, Bill Scarborough Jr. and David Scarborough of Kennebunkport, Deeann Krahl of Simsbury, Conn. and Katie Bateson of Cheshire, Conn.; two sons-in-law, Frederic Krahl and Bob Bateson; and five beloved grandchildren, Jonathan and Liza Krahl, and Whitney, Billy and Alex Bateson; one sister, Nancy Angier of Providence, R.I.; one brother, Frederick Scarborough of Williamstown, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.
