Diane LaPointe

KENNEBUNK - Diane A. LaPointe passed away peacefully on July 31, 2004 at Huntington Common surrounded by her children and other family members. She had fought a courageous battle with cancer, and her strength and faith throughout this ordeal served as an example of her commitment to serving others.

A long-time resident of Kennebunk, she was born in Lawrence, Mass. on July 16, 1943, the daughter of Hedwig A. Bernard and the late Valmore A. Bernard.

Educated in both Lawrence and Methuen schools, she was employed for many years at Huntington Common, and earlier, in the hospitality industry in the Kennebunk area.

In September 2001, she was honored by the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport community by being named "Citizen of the Year." In receiving this honor, she was aptly described as an everyday person doing extraordinary things to help others. Her life was truly a tapestry of acts of kindness, not only for her family, friends, co-workers, and the elderly with whom she worked, but for anyone whom she saw as having a need. Douglas Stockbridge, managing director of Huntington Common, described her at the time of this award as "just a remarkable human being who thinks of other people way before she thinks of her own needs." Another citizen, applauding her selection as Citizen of the Year added: "Diane is the embodiment of the unique fabric of our two townspeople who care about one another, and quietly, without recognition, go about helping others, day after day."

Her primary mission in life was that of being a caring, devoted mother to her four children. She was proud of their achievements, both in their personal and professional lives; her children, in turn, realized that it was their mother's sacrifices, including working long hours, while always being there for them, that made this possible. "Our beloved mother touched so many lives. Her caring nature, her love for children, her infectious smile, and warm sense of humor will be part of our lives forever. In a word, she was the perfect mother."

She is survived by her mother, Hedwig A. Bernard of Lawrence, Mass.; four children, Donald E. LaPointe III and his wife Lisa, of Amesbury, Mass., Denise A. LaPointe of Boston, Mass., Deborah A. LaPointe-Sleeper and her husband Brian, of York, and Deanna E. Ruland and husband Todd, of York; seven grandchildren, Justin Donovan, Kassie LaPointe, Luke Claflin, Sam LaPointe, Max LaPointe, Emma Ruland and Sophia Ruland; five siblings, Geraldine Bernard of San Leandro, Calif., Peter R. Bernard of Garden Grove, Calif., Doris B. Czajkowski of Sterling, Mass., Valerie M. Mosko of Salisbury, Mass., and Maureen B. Rodrigues of Salem, N.H.; her former husband and friend, Donald E. LaPointe Jr. of Greenville; and 13 nephews and nieces.

A funeral mass will be held today at 10:15 a.m. at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Memorial contributions may be made to Beacon Hospice, 54B Atlantic Place, South Portland, ME 04106.
