Lytton Dowson

KENNEBUNK - Lytton Hartley Dowson, 98, passed away Aug. 20, 2004.

Lytton Hartley Dowson, a resident of Kennebunkport and Kennebunk for close to 30 years, was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Dec. 24, 1905 to James Lonsdale Dowson and Sarah Ann (Whitney) Dowson. He was named after the British writer, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and was baptized in Philadelphia in 1907.

As his father was a Universalist minister who changed parishes when he ran out of sermons (a family joke), Lytton spent his youth in several additional Pensylvania towns: Linesville, Brooklyn and Harrisburg. He was a young adult when his father moved the family to a parish in Woodstock, Vt.

A quick learner, he was graduated from high school at 16, then attended Bryant & Stratton business school in Boston for two years to master typing, shorthand and bookkeeping, and then attended Boston College part time at night to advance his business education. He went to work for the private bank of J.M. Forbes & Co. in Boston, where he remained until his retirement 52 years later, rising to the position of secretary-treasurer. During his tenure, he traveled to Honduras in 1946, as a special assistant to W. Cameron Forbes, formerly governor of the Philippines.

In 1932, in Boston, he married Marion (Welcome) Johnson of Pawtucket, R.I. The couple first lived in an apartment in West Newton, Mass., before purchasing a home in Waban, Mass. a decade later. As this Beacon Street house had been built in 1740, the couple lavished care on its restoration, doing most of the painting and decorating themselves so that, in the early 1970s, the home was occasionally opened to the public as a historical showpiece.

An avid tennis player, he was a member of the Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Mass. He entered, and won, many tournaments. For most of his adult life, he spent two or three evenings a week playing tennis there after work. He served as president of the club in 1957-58 and was on a first-name basis with many tennis greats of the day, such as Victor Seixas and Hazel Wightman.

After only a few piano lessons, he taught himself to play "Someone to Watch Over Me," "The Very Thought of You" and "Love is Sweeping the Country" as part of a repertoire of the popular songs he loved. Of a theatrical bent, he acted in amateur plays put on by the Neighborhood Club in Waban for many years. He and Marion attended the Union Protestant Church in Waban and participated fully in the lively social life of the community. In the 1960s, he worked evenings as a real estate salesperson to help put his daughter, Sarah, through college. The family vacationed every summer in Little Compton, R.I.

Having been predeceased by his wife, Marion, in 1975, he married Regina (Keenan) Goodwin of Kennebunkport, in 1977. He moved to Maine that year and the couple lived on Peninsula Drive at Gooch's Beach. He earned a Maine Real Estate Broker's license and sold real estate in Kennebunkport for many years. He continued his tennis and social life as a member of Kennebunkport's River Club. He and Regina divorced amicably in 1983, citing lifestyle differences, but remained devoted friends.

He is survived by one daughter, Sarah Whitney Dowson, of New York City.

Arrangements are under the care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
