Walter Ducharme

SPRINGVALE - Walter E. Ducharme, 76, of Springvale, a long-time resident of Wells, died Oct. 24, 2004 at home after a long illness.

He was born in Sanford on Nov. 19, 1927, a son of John E. and Marion (Reid) Ducharme Sr., attended Sanford schools, and was a 1947 graduate of Sanford High School.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

For many years, his wife, the former Estelle Moulton, owned and operated the Brookland Motor Court on Route 1 in Wells, retiring in 1988. In their retirement, they lived in Springvale, and spent winters in Sanford, Fla. She died Oct. 28, 1999.

An active mason, he was a member of the Ocean Masonic Lodge 142 in Wells, member of the Valley of Portland Scottish Rite, member of the Kora Temple Shrine, and a member of the Madonna Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Kennebunk. He was also a member of the Bauneg Beg Grange and the York Pomona Grange.

He was a member of the Congregational Church of Wells, UCC.

Survivors include three sons, W. Eric Ducharme and his partner, Ron Appleby of Alfred, Errol N. Ducharme and his wife Candy of Springvale, Larry E. Ducharme and his wife Faith of Peaks Island; four daughters, Marilyn Cote and her husband Phil of Springvale, Noreen Bridges and her husband Donald of Lebanon, Lori Ann Black and her husband John, of Springvale, Julie Johnson and her husband David, of Wells; two brothers, Donald Ducharme of Durant, Fla., and John Ducharme of Val Rico, Fla.; three sisters, Donna Irish of E. Baldwin, Nancy Clark of North Berwick, and Doris Emerson of Alfred; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday in the Congregational Church of Wells, with the Revs. Herb Henry and Carleton Gunn officiating. Burial will follow in Ocean View cemetery in Wells.

William Ruud

KENNEBUNK - William Howard Ruud was born in Manhattan, N.Y. to Dr. Norman Ruud and Dr. Virginia Ruud.

His parents, and his sisters; Nancy Schneider and Jane Lowe predeceased him.

He leaves his loving wife, Emelia (Aceti) Ruud; his sister, Barbara Chatfield; two stepsons, Joshua and Lucian Smith; many nephews and nieces.

He graduated from the Kingswood School in 1964 where he made his reputation as a creative young man full of irrepressible and irreverent humor. At Kingswood, he developed a strong love and appreciation for music that endured throughout his life. When he wasn't playing music, he would spend his free time learning how to fly and earned his pilot's license before he could drive a car. He had many fond memories of summer days spent with family and friends at their summer home in Quogue, Long Island, N.Y.

He attended Colby College for a year and a half before enlisting in the Navy during the Vietnam war. He flew A6 attack aircraft while aboard the Enterprise and the Kitty Hawk. He was heavily decorated and received the Presidential Citation for his bravery in combat. His call sign was Big Skinney.

After the Navy, he graduated from the University of Hartford with a major in electrical engineering. He worked for many years in the aerospace industry. He joined the MITRE Corporation in Bedford, Mass. where he became director of Prototype Development.

He maintained a security clearance during his professional life.

He retired to Kennebunk. He and his wife, Emelia, were married in 2000. They both shared a love of the ocean and at various times they could be seen floating down the Kennebunk River in wet suits, careening along Gooch's Beach in their speedboat, or slowly making their way in their sailboat, Trilogy. As his health declined he was seen less on the water but he remained active in the community as a member of the River Committee, where he enjoyed working with the other members on issues important to the Kennebunk river.

He loved his four-footed friends, Sheba and Mo who predeceased him, and Cato who will miss his generous handouts and affection.

Friends and family will gather at 12:30 to 1 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunkport. At 1 p.m., rain or shine, a river-walk along the monastery paths will commence to honor his love of the Kennebunk River and the ocean. Casual attire. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to: Kennebunk Animal Shelter, Kennebunk Rescue, Adopt A Platoon, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce, Veterans for Peace, Franciscan Monastery.

Wanda Skardzius

CAPE ELIZABETH - Wanda Skardzius, 80, of Scott Dyer Road in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, formerly of Red Bank, N.J., died on Oct. 20, 2004 at Haven Healthcenter of Cape Elizabeth.

She was born on Aug. 8, 1924 in New York City, a daughter of John and Tessie Stockus.

She was predeceased by her husband John S. Skardzius, and her grandson Paul Thomas.

Surviving are her two daughters, Christine Robichaud and her husband Arthur, of Kittery and Margaret Thomas of Sebastian, Fla.; one sister, Eleanor Carpenter of West Orange, N.J.; and six grandchildren, Elizabeth Robichaud, John Robichaud, Matthew Thomas, Arron Thomas, Nicholas Thomas and Katherine Thomas; one nephew, Roderick Carpenter and wife Susan; one niece, Deborah Vincent and her children Kimberly, Betsy and Christopher.

A funeral was held on Wednesday at the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery, with the Rev. Dr. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot officiating.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Andree Amelotte

YORK - Andree C. Amelotte, 62, formerly of North Berwick, passed away peacefully, Oct. 25, 2004 at the Harbor Home in York after a lifelong battle with multiple sclerosis.

She was born April 6, 1942 in Marlboro, Mass., the daughter of Roland and Adrienne (Labelle) Amelotte. She graduated high school in 1959 from St. John the Baptist Academy in Syracuse, N.Y. and then from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., as a registered nurse. She loved working and caring for children at St. Christopher's Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. She was also a member of Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick.

She is survived by her daughter, Tina (Carpenter) Cochran and husband Alex Cochran, of Rochester, N.H.; her father, Roland Amelotte of Wells; three brothers, Richard of York, Pa., Gerald of Troy, Maine and Michael of Lyman; three sisters, Suzanne Golden of Lakeland, Fla., Helene Ennis of Wells, and Ann Stuckey of Englewood, Fla.; and one precious granddaughter, Julia Reede Cochran.

Despite enduring 36 years with M.S., she was best known for her strong faith, generous spirit, and incredible kindness. She will be missed beyond measure.

A celebration of life service will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick. Refreshments to follow.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Eleanor Flavin

BIDDEFORD - Eleanor A. Flavin, 96, died Oct. 29, 2004 at York Hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Biddeford until her last four years. She moved to the Atria in Kennebunk, where she made many new friends.

She was born in Biddeford on Oct. 17, 1908, the daughter of Patrick and Alice (McCarn) Mahaney.

She was a former employee of Swift & Company, an active member and supporter of St. Mary's Church, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a wonderful friend to many.

She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Stuart V. Flavin Sr. on Nov. 4, 1977.

Surviving are two sons, Stuart V. Flavin Jr. and his wife Eleanor, of Newark, N.Y. and Dr. David P. Flavin and his wife Catherine, of Eliot; five grandchildren,

Katherine Flavin Badertscher and her husband Mark, Stuart V. Flavin III and his wife Dawn Pelton, Elizabeth M., Moira E., and Brendan D. Flavin; three great-grandchildren, Stuart and Olivia Badertscher, and Kaila Pelton-Flavin; and several cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at St. Mary's Church in Biddeford. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Biddeford.

Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to St. Mary's Church, PO Box 515, Biddeford, ME 04005.

Cathryn Hess

KENNEBUNK - Cathryn (Murray) Hess, 88, of Kennebunk, died Oct. 28, 2004 at the Huntington Common.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on April 25, 1916, a daughter of William Joseph and Margaret Teresa (Blake) Murray. She attended and graduated from St. Brendan's School and married Andrew C. Hess on Oct. 25, 1947.

Prior to her marriage, she worked on Wall Street, and in the 1940s, worked for the law firm of Parker, Chapman and Flattau, who were involved with the Norden Bomb Sight in Manhattan, where she had clearance for restricted and confidential information.

She was also an executive secretary for Polaroid and Grand Union Corporations.

Her family moved to Vermont in 1973 and she was hired by the UVM Medical School in Burlington as a receptionist. After her husband's death in 1981, she returned to UVM as a receptionist and later secretary for the alumni office for the medical school.

She was predeceased by two brothers, William Murray and Thomas Murray; three sisters, Helen Murray Dugan, Margaret Wittman and Marie Cunningham Smith.

She is survived by one son, Andrew Murray Hess and his wife Karen, of Glenville, N.Y; two grandchildren, Anna Clare Hess of Atlanta, Ga. and Matthew Blake Hess of State College, Pa.; one daughter, Martha Blake Hess-Pomber and her husband Lloyd, of Arundel; four step-grandchildren, Donald Pomber of Sebastion, Fla., Nancy Hanna and her husband Nathan, of Round Pond, Maine, Kimberly Graham and her husband Andrew, of Cumberland, and Joseph Pomber and his wife, Leah of North Grosenordale, Conn.; and six step-great-grandchildren, Thomas, Matthew Lloyd, Brynne and Stephen Hanna, and Russell and Elly Graham.

She also had a very special and loving relationship with her goddaughter, Margaret Blake Moore. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and her cousins in Ireland.

Services will be private. Burial will be at the Fort Ethan Allen cemetery in Colchester, Vt.

Melba Lloyd

KENNEBUNK - Melba "Polly" Lloyd, 94, homemaker, died on Oct. 26, 2004 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

She was born in Sherrill's Ford, N.C., and was a former resident of Belmont, Mass. and Kennebunk, Maine prior to moving to Fountain Hills, Ariz., in 1986.

She was an active member in the Women's Club in Belmont and Kennebunk while a resident there. She was a recipient of several awards for her achievements in crewel embroidery and crocheting.

She was the daughter of George and Sally Sherrill.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharyn Potter, one son-in-law, Thomas Potter, and one grandson, Robert Potter, all of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Lensie and J.B. Sherrill of Gastonia, N.C.

She was predeceased in death by her husband of 68 years, Rt. Lt. Colonel Stacy G. Lloyd.

Services were held Monday at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment was at the National Memorial cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, Ariz.

Richard Low Sr.

OGUNQUIT - Richard Sylvester Low Sr., 84, of Ogunquit, died Oct. 30, 2004 at York Hospital surrounded by his family after a long illness.

He was born July 22, 1920, a son of Edgar and Marjorie (Shortridge) Low in Sanbornville, N.H.

He graduated from Rochester High School in Rochester, N.H. in the class of 1938.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed as a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years .

He enjoyed woodworking, reading, writing, and trips to Perkins Cove for a good cup of coffee.

He is survived by his wife, Andria (Brin) Low of Ogunquit; one son, Richard S. Low Jr. of Florida; two daughters, Jacqueline Nowell of Washington, D.C. and Michelle Low of Ogunquit; two grandchildren, Kristen and Joshua Nowell; and one great-grandchild, Raiden Nowell.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Ocean View cemetery Post Road, Wells on Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Sharon Miesel officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330 in his memory.

Ann Marie Rice

KENNEBUNK - Ann Marie (Proctor) Rice, daughter of Eloise (Betz) and Wesley Proctor, born Jan. 28, 1932, died at home on Oct. 31, 2004.

She graduated from Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in 1953, was a pediatric nurse at Boston Children's Hospital, Boston, Boston Floating Hospital, then moved to Greenfield, Mass. where she worked at the former Franklin County Public Hospital and the Health Services at Greenfield Community College.

She is survived by three sisters and one brother, Beverly Boyer of Dover, Del., Nancy Greenleaf of Brunswick, Betsey Nidecker of Lake

Charles, La., and Wesley Proctor of Oswego, N.Y.

One brother, Peter Proctor predeceased her.

She is also survived by her former husband of 26 years, Donald N. Rice of Sunapee, N.H.

She leaves five children and five grandchildren, Kim Cooper and her husband, Tom of Scottsdale, Ariz., Tim Rice and his wife Elise of Greenfield, Mass.,

Susan Welenc and her husband, Doug, and grandchildren Brianna, Elizabeth and Douglas, all of Greenfield, Mass., Karen Cronan and her husband Michael and granddaughters, Megan and Shannon Cronan all of Newburyport, Mass., and Jay Rice of Darien, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Burial will follow at Pine Grove cemetery in Falmouth.

Donations can be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 901 Washington Ave., Suite 104, Portland, ME 04103.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Maurice Richardson

WELLS - Maurice "Sonny" Richardson, 60, of Wells, passed away quietly Oct. 26, 2004 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Feb. 15, 1944 in South Berwick, a son of Maurice and Lillian Richardson. He served his country proudly in the United States Army for three years.

For 16 years, he had been a grinder at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in North Berwick.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Linda (Franz) Richardson; three step-daughters and their spouses, Deborah Fenderson and her husband Larry Fenderson of Wells, Catherine Sullivan and her husband Michael of Rochester, N.H.; and Kimberly Daggett of Wells; four grandsons, Andrew and Alex Sullivan, David Williams and Donald Fenderson.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. Interment at a later date in the Maine Veteran's cemetery in Augusta.
