Maurice Dumas

BIDDEFORD - Former resident Maurice H. Dumas, 52, of Penn Yan, N.Y., died at home April 1, 1999 of brain cancer.

He was born June 16, 1946 in Biddeford, a son of Fernand Reno and Anna Dumas, attended Arundel Grammer School and was a 1964 graduate of St. Louis High School. A National Merit Scholar, he was awarded a four-year scholarship to Columbia University, where he studied journalism and French.

Mr. Dumas was a schoolteacher in Stratford, N.H. prior to working as a news reporter for Penn Yan’s weekly Finger Lakes Times and later for the daily Chronicle Express.

He coached soccer for the County Youth Soccer Program.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Frances Dumas; his mother, Anna Doucette of East Hartford, Conn.; three brothers, Charles of Scotia, N.Y., Conrad of Greenfield, N.H. and Andre of Hartford, Conn.; two sisters, Colette Hatfield of Frederick, Md. and Marie Scotilla of Wheat Ridge, Colo; 10 nieces and nephews.

Ralph Parsons

EAST LEBANON - Ralph E. Parsons, 77, of Bigelow Road, died at home Wednesday (listed Friday, April 23, 1999).

He was born Dec. 26, 1921 in Lebanon, the son of Harold I. and Thelma M. (Tibbetts) Parsons, and was a graduate of Lebanon Academy. He received his degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Hampshire.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, achieving the rank of sergeant.

He was an engineer for New England Telephone in Boston, Mass., Manchester, N.H., Portland and Whippany, N.J., retiring in 1986.

Mr. Parsons was considered a telephone pioneer, family members say, and was an active ham radio operator, using the call latters W1ZQ.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betsy Lawson Parsons of East lebanon; two daughters, Linda of Mountain Air, N.M., and Peggy Leavitt of Rochester, N.H.; grandsons Peter and Joshua Leavitt of Rochester.

Rita Sullivan

SANFORD - Rita Sullivan, 79, of Kilby Street, died Wednesday (listed Friday, April 23, 1999) at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

She was born March 15, 1920 in South Berwick, a daughter of Pete and Philomene (Gagnon) Perreault and attended schools there.

Mrs. Sullivan was a Sanford resident for 57 years and a summer resident of Cedar Drive in Square Pond in Shapleigh since 1951.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Richard H. Sullivan of Sanford; a brother, Robert A. Perreault of Jacksonville, Fla.; five sisters, Mary Hunter and Jeannette Frost, both of Dover, N.H., Ora Nickerson and Eleanor Bartus, both of Manchester, N.H. and Annette Bartus of Gainesville, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Clark

ALFRED - Dorothy R. Clark, 93, of Kennebunk Road, died Wednesday (listed Friday, April 23, 1999) at Newton Center, Sanford.

She was born Nov. 3, 1905 in Portland, a daughter of William C. and Flora A. Smith Miller and had lived in Alfred since moving from Portland in 1944.

A 1927 graduate of Deering High School, Mrs. Clark graduated in 1929 from Gorham Normal School with her teaching certificate. Shortly after graduation, she began teaching at Sebago Lake Primary School, where she taught for four years before a 10-year teaching stint in the Portland school system. In 1948, she began working for the Alfred School District, where she taught for 24 years, retiring in 1972.

An enthusiastic gardener, Mrs. Clark often dried her own flowers and created arrangements and crafts for family and friends. Survivors say she was a dedicated mother and teacher who touched the lives of her students during her 38-year teaching career.

She was predeceased by her husband of 27 years, Carl F. Clark, in 1968.

Survivors include her daughter, Marion (Becky) R. Hanson of Midlothian, Va.; two grandchildren, Eric Hanson of Alfred and Kathryn Bayne of Chase City, Va.; two great-grandchildren and several cousins.

Eleanor Eldgedge

SANFORD - Former resident Eleanor Pratt Eldredge, 74, of Cape Neddick, died Thursday (listed Friday, April 23, 1999) at York Hospital.

She was born July 10, 1024 in Portland, the daughter of Lorne K. and Theresa (Winslow) Pratt, and was a graduate of Sanford High School.

She moved to York at the age of 17, and was in charge of the garden section of the Eldredge Lumber Company for many years. Mrs. Eldredge was well known in the community because of the time she spent at the lumberyard.

She was a member of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach and participated in various church activities. She had been a member of York Beach PTA while her children were growing up, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. Boardman-Ellis Post #6977 in Cape Neddick.

A winter resident of Hawaii, she had just returned from there a few weeks ago, family members say.

Mrs. Eldredge enjoyed swimming, gardening, knitting, needlepoint and quilting and had made a number of quilts for her family. She enjoyed the company of her family, especially her grandchildren, survivors say.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wolfrett P. “Sport” Eldredge, who died in 1977 and by a brother, Robert Pratt in 1971.

Survivors include a son, Scott W. of Cape Neddick; two daughters, Janice Eldredge Roberge of York Beach and Judith Eldredge McKenna of Amherst, N.H.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Dagny Sjulander

BUXTON - Dagny H. “Farmor”Sjulander, 96, of Treadwell Road, died Wednesday (listed Friday, April 23, 1999) at Mercy Hospital, Portland.

She was born Sept. 14, 1902 in Sweden, the daughter of Swen and Ida Magnason Anderson, and emigrated to the United States in the early 1930s.

She was employed as a housekeeper and cook in the Dedham, Mass. area and was employed at a stitching factory in the Boston, Mass. area. She moved to Buxton in 1965.

Mrs. Sjulander was predeceased by her husband, Ellis Sjulander in 1973.

Survivors include a son, Nils of Buxton; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four nieces and one nephew.

CLARK

DOROTHY R., of Alfred died April 21, 1999 in Sanford. Visiting hours 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Heald Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Springvale, where a funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday; Rev. Chandler Holmes officiating. Burial at Chadbourne Cemetery, Lyman, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alfred Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 36, Alfred, 04002.

COLE

RICHARD B. Jr., died April 20, 1999 in Kennebunk. Memorial donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 622 Congress St., Portland, 04104.

ELEANOR PRATT, of Cape Neddick and formerly of Sanford died April 22, 1999 in York. Visiting hours 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York. Funeral 11 a.m. Monday at Union Congregational Church, Church Street, York Beach. Burial at First Parish Cemetery, York. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 969, York Beach, 03910.

RALPH E., died April 21, 1999 in East Lebanon. There will be no visiting hours. Graveside service 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cold Spring Cemetery (new section), East Rochester, N.H.; Rev. DAGNY, of Buxton, died April 21, 1999 in Portland. Private family burial at South Buxton Cemetery., A celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, May 2 at Bar Mills Community Church. Florence Nunan

CAPE PORPOISE - Florence E. Nunan, 94, a longtime resident of Cape Porpoise, died Wednesday (listed Friday, May 7, 1999) at Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born June 17, 1904 in East Boston, Mass., a daughter of Elisha Freeman and Lina Onthank Nunan, was a graduate of Kennebunkport High School and took post graduate courses there.

She was employed with the U.S. Postal Service and was postmaster for Cape Porpoise, retiring in 1964 after 42 years of service. She was a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States (NAPUS).

Miss Nunan was a member of the Church on the Cape for more than 60 years, and was chairman of the board of trustees for many years, as well as a member of the finance committee.

She held memberships in the Kennebunkport Historical Society, the Olympian Club and the AARP, and was a member and former chaplain of the Fifty Plus Club in Kennebunk.

She was predeceased by a sister, Doris MacKenna.

Survivors include a niece, Lorraine MacKenna Bennett of Wells; two grandnieces, Carol Harriman Tremblay of Dexter and Kathie Harriman Abbott of Springvale; two great-grandnieces, a great-grandnephew and one great-great- grandnephew.

Raymond Savage

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Raymond H. Savage, 79, of Heath Street, died Wednesday (listed Friday, May 7, 1999) at the Renaissance Nursing Care Facility, Biddeford.

He was born in Steuben on Sept. 24, 1919, a son of Wayne and Katie (Savage) Savage, and was educated in Steuben schools. He moved to Old Orchard Beach 60 years ago.

Mr. Savage was employed by the Town of Old Orchard Beach in its Public Works Department for 25 years, until his retirement in 1974.

On March 9, 1963 he married Marie C. LeBlanc.

Survivors include his wife and a daughter, Tammy Velez, both of Old Orchard Beach; two stepsons, Tony Clark and Richard Clark, both of Newport; three stepdaughters, Margie Ross and Patricia Monk, both of Old Orchard Beach, and Connie Cash of Kennebunk; and two granddaughters.

HUTCHINS

MIRIAM, of Lyman, died Feb. 26, 1999 in Portland. A graveside service will be held 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Oceanview Cemetery, Route 1, Wells; Rev. Susan Heafield officiating. Arrangements by Hope

FLORENCE E., of Cape Porpoise died May 5, 1999 in Kennebunk. Visiting hours 6-8 p.m. Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.
