Lottie Riley

KITTERY - Lottie (Stewart) Riley, 85, of 143 Rogers Rd., Meeting House Village, died on Oct. 24 , 2004 in Woolwich, Maine.

She was born on July 30, 1919, in Ashland, Maine, the daughter of William A. and Bernice (Richardson) Stewart. She moved to Rumford, Maine at age of 4, graduating from Stevens High School with the class of 1937. She furthered her education graduating from Favorite Beauty School in Portsmouth, N.H. in 1939.

She met and married her loving husband of 53 years Leland L. "Butch" Riley Jr. Together they made their home and raised their family in Kittery.

She worked in the cosmetology field for many years. She owned her own beauty shop and worked in several shops in the area. She served as director of Le Baran Academy in Dover, N.H. sharing her expertise with scores of students throughout the years.

Later she worked at the Institute for Living in Hartford, Conn., as a psychiatric aide.

Most recently she has lived at Meeting House Village in Kittery where she has made many wonderful friends, with whom she was able to enjoy the last years of her life, especially her dear friend Charles Perry who cared for her and watched over her.

She was a member of the Second Christian Congregational Church, Kittery. She was a Girl Scout leader, delivered meals on wheels, and worked at the church thrift shop.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Susan Riley of Woolwich, Maine.

She was predeceased by her husband Leland L. "Butch" Riley.

A memorial service was celebrated at her church, the Second Christian Congregational Church UCC, in Kittery on Wednesday.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Second Christian Church UCC, Government Street in Kittery, ME 03904.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Louise Sprague

KITTERY - Louise Ray (Foster) Sprague, 90, died unexpectedly on Oct. 25, 2004 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, due to injuries sustained from a fall.

She leaves her devoted husband, Ralph A. Sprague of Sentry Hill York. She wed Ralph on May 28, 1932 and they were happily married for 72 years after a lifelong courtship that began in the fifth grade. She lived in Kittery her entire life until most recently when she moved to Sentry Hill of York with her husband.

She also leaves two daughters, Sandra S. Beveridge and son-in-law Frank D. Beveridge of Scarborough, and Sally J. Gould and her son-in-law Alan D. Gould of Newton, Mass.; one grandson, Christopher Clarke of Carlsbad, Calif.; one granddaughter, Kimberly Pesik and husband Mark Falconer of Seattle, Wash.; one granddaughter, Tamara Pesik and husband Mark Borst of Hampton, N.H.; and two great-grandchildren, Evan Patrick Clarke and Annabelle Olivia Falconer.

She was born in Kittery on May 14, 1914 and graduated from Robert W. Traip Academy in 1931. She was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during the World War II, and was later employed as a legal secretary for Elmer J. Burnham for 26 years. She started her own real estate business in 1975 and drafted her husband to work with her in their successful business known to locals as the "Ralph and Louise Sprague Realty," later retiring to their winter quarters in Largo, Fla.

She was a member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and the Mother's Club of Kittery. She was an avid knitter and bridge player, a wonderful ballroom dancer with her husband. She and her husband also spent a lot of time working in many community activities. In recent years, she relished an occasional trip to Foxwoods Casino. Her favorite pastime was sitting at the Nubble Light enjoying a Brown's ice cream cone with her husband. She loved spending quality time with her family, many friends, and her beloved dogs, Beignet, Cody, Cassie, and Daisy.

A memorial service was held on Friday at her church, the Second Christian Congregational Church UCC in Kittery, with a time of refreshment and sharing to follow in the church parish hall.

Jaroslav Stepancik

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Jaroslav "Jerry" Stepancik, 51, of Wakefield Street in Rochester, N.H., died on Oct. 25, 2004 in Lowell, Mass. as the result of a homicide.

He was born on April 12,1953 in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, to Jarolim and Blazena (Satinova) Stepancik. He defected from then Communist-controlled Czechoslavakia, eventually receiving political asylum from the United States. After emigrating in 1982 he was sponsored by Henry and Sophie Berounsky of Portsmouth, N.H., who found him a place to live and employment at Paul Griffin's Construction Company. He became a naturalized American Citizen in October 1988.

He made many friends during his years of employment at Griffin Construction Company in Portsmouth, N.H., Claude Dubois Excavating in Biddeford, Radenhausen and O'Neill in Center Moriches, N.Y. and most recently at Helfrich Brothers Boiler Works in Lawrence, Mass.

He was active with the local Working Dog Foundation, he enjoyed working with all the police officers in the foundation especially with Capt. Ferland of the Portsmouth Police Department. He assisted many local police K-9 handlers with the training of dogs in police protection, apprehension, and search-and-rescue techniques. He was also recognized for the donation of a police K-9 to a local police department.

He is survived by one daughter, Petra Elizabeth Stepancik; his former wife, Beth (Crockett) Stepancik, one sister, Marcella Tichavska of Ostrava, Czech Republic; and many friends.

His parents and a brother Pavel Stepancik predeceased him.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Working Dog Foundation C/O NH Municipal Association, PO Box 617, Concord, NH 0302-0617.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Muriel Labarge

KENNEBUNK - Muriel A. Labarge, 69, a resident of Jaclins Way, Kennebunk, died Nov. 1, 2004 at the Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford after a long illness.

She was born in Ossipee, N.H. on July 26, 1935, a daughter of Albert and Viola (Avery) Nichols. She attended Ossipee schools.

She was a homemaker for many years.

She enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Ralph Labarge who died in 1999.

She is survived by her five sons, Gary Googoo, Lee Nichols, Wayne Langley, Bill Jordan and Steve Googoo; seven daughters, Carol Smith, Linda Spang, Pam Sanborn, Mary Lapierre, Helen Nelson, Donna Keegan and Cindy Carlson; one sister, Virginia Wasson; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, where a funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire memorial donations to the Labarge Family c/o Carol Smith, PO Box 766, Kennebunk, ME 04043 in her memory.

Frederick Thyng, MD

KENNEBUNK - Dr. Frederick W. Thyng, 89, a retired physician and long-time resident of Kennebunk passed away on Oct. 28, 2004 at Southern Maine Medical Center after suffering a severe stroke.

He was born in New York City on March 5, 1915, but grew up in Shapleigh, Maine and graduated from Sanford High School in 1932. He then attended Bowdoin College graduating with honors in 1936. After college, he went to Tufts Medical School again graduating with honors in 1940. Following medical school, his further training included a two-year rotating internship at Worchester City Hospital, and a radiology residency both in the U.S. Public Health Service and at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York between 1951 and 1955. Also between 1942 and 1951 he cared for tuberculosis patients at Battey State Tuberculosis Hospital in Rome, Ga., when his wife Wilma was also a patient.

He was medical director and chief of radiology services at the Boston U.S. Public Health Service Hospital from 1955 to 1967. He was board certified in radiology in 1956. In 1966 he was awarded the Commendation Medal of Service by the surgeon general in recognition of his exemplary contributions to radiology and training programs in clinical medicine. He was a career officer in the U.S. Public Health Service retiring from active duty in 1967 with the rank of colonel. After this he continued in the private practice of radiology and as a consultant until 1982 when he retired with his wife to Kennebunk.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Coast Guard, receiving the American Theater Ribbon. He was also a member of several professional societies including the American College of Radiology, the Radiology Society of North America, the New England Roentgen Ray Society and the American Trudeau Society. He was also a member of the Tufts Millenium Club.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Wilma "Billy" Thyng from Emery Mills, Maine in 1936. They were happily married for 63 years until her death in March 2000. They loved life, especially their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, living in Kennebunk, gardening and traveling around the world.

He is survived by one son, Frederick J. Thyng, M.D. of Yarmouthport, Mass.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service for the immediate family only will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Dublin Christian Academy, Box 521, Dublin, NH 03444.

Rosaire Toulouse

KITTERY - Rosaire (Auguste) Toulouse, 85, of Shapleigh Road in Kittery died on Oct. 26, 2004 at York Hospital.

Born on Oct. 22, 1919 in Lac Megantic, P.Q, he was the son of Fortunat and Alice (Gendron) Toulouse. He moved as a young man with his family to the Jackman, Maine area, and graduated from Jackman High School with the class of 1938. He furthered his education in Detroit, Mich., where he attended welding trade school.

He entered the United States Army in September of 1942 and was trained in Ft. Belvoir, Va. and attended communications school in Athens, Ga. He was assigned to the 13th Armored Division in California. He received training as a combat engineer in Texas before being deployed to the European theatre of War, just after D day. He remained in combat duty until the end of the war assigned to the 7th Armored Division and 3rd under Patton. He was also assigned to the 13th (Black Cats) for nearly seven months before he returned to the United States for recuperation. He was last assigned to Camp Beals in California and discharged in December of 1945. He became a citizen of the United States in 1943.

In September of 1951, he met and married his loving wife of 53 years Patricia Helene (Manary) Toulouse, together they have made their home and raised a family in the seacoast area.

He started his career as a boilermaker just before his entrance in to the armed services in 1942, upon his return he worked as an ironworker and then for over 40 years as a boilermaker. He retired in October of 1981 from local 29 after receiving his 40-year pin.

He is survived by his loving family, his wife Patricia, and their five children, one daughter, Laurie and her husband Colo "Butch" Hayes of South Berwick; four sons, David and his wife Anneliese, of Freeport, Alan and his wife Gail, of E. Wakefield, N.H., Gary and his wife Kathleen, of Groose Ile, Mich. and Daniel and his wife Jamie, of Gilbert, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and two nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday at his church, St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery, with burial following in Orchard Grove Cemetery.

Family flowers only; his family suggests donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Phyllis Waldron

KENNEBUNK - Phyllis (Greenaway) Waldron of Kennebunk, died at her home on Nov. 1, 2004 after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Dover, N.H. on Nov. 14, 1914, daughter of Robert Wilson Greenaway and Annie (Stearns) Greenaway. She was graduated from Dover High School and Wheelock College in Boston, and taught briefly in the Dover Public schools before her marriage in 1940 to George F. Waldron of Dover.

They moved to Garden City, N.Y. where she taught first grade for seven years at the Cathedral School of St. Mary. (Episcopal)

She went on to study art, which was her lifelong interest. She served on the board of the New Jersey Chapter, National Society of Arts and Letters for 18 years, and the Board of McCullough Hall Historical Museum in Morristown, N.J., and volunteered at Morristown Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Art Guild of the Kennebunks and Maine Women in the Arts. She exhibited her work widely in New Jersey, Buck's County, Pa., Long Island, N.Y. and Maine.

She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church, Kennebunk and served on the Altar Guild there for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, George F. Waldron.

She is survived by one son, Charles Greenleaf Waldron of Fort Mill, S.C.; one daughter, Gail Stearns Chandler of Cape Porpoise, Maine; four grandchildren, George F. Waldron of Maryville, Tenn., Christine Waldron Thomas of Lake Wylie, S.C., Amy Greenaway Peabody of Pietra Marazzi, Italy, and Kate Waldron Peabody LeGault of Colchester, Conn.; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at St. David's Episcopal Church, Route 1 South, Kennebunk at 11 a.m. on Monday with Rev. Daniel Riggall officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. David's Episcopal Church, PO Box 165, Kennebunk, ME 04043 or Hospice of Southern Maine, 901 Washington Ave., Suite 104, Portland, ME 04103.

Ruth Cluff

ARUNDEL - Ruth M. Cluff, 79, of Sinnott Road, died Nov. 25, 2004 at a Portland hospital.

She was born in North Kennebunkport on Feb. 22, 1925, a daughter of Clarence and Grace (Woods) Emmons.

She attended local schools and worked as a housekeeper for many years. She operated a day-care center where she cared for many state children, as well as working with her husband at the family fish market.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and bowling.

She was also a member of the American Legion Auxillary.

Her husband of 41 years, Roy P. Cluff died in 1986.

She is survived by seven sons, Gerald Roy Cluff of Wells, Edgar Allan Cluff of Yakima, Wash., Douglas Owen Cluff of Kennebunk, Donald Nelson Cluff of Kennebunkport, Rodney Earl Cluff of Hooksett, N.H., Richard Gordon Cluff of Kennebunk, and Robert H. Cluff of Buxton; two daughters, Grace Maxine Cole of Limington, and Edith Louise Richards of Buxton; two brothers, Robert Emmons of New Mexico and Raymond Emmons of South Carolina; three sisters, Edith Wilson of Buxton, Virginia Mahar of Hollis and Mary Emmons of South Carolina; 30 grandchildren; and 57 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. Burial followed at Arundel cemetery in Kennebunkport.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Maine Cancer Foundation, 970 Baxter Blvd., Portland, ME 04102.

Matthew Flaherty

SCARBOROUGH - Matthew J. Flaherty, 86, of Wells, died Nov. 29, 2004 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

He was born in Portland on Jan. 29, 1918, a son of Mark and Ann (Welch) Flaherty.

He graduated from Deering High School in Portland in 1937. While there, he excelled in football, basketball, and track and field. This athletic prowess continued at the University of New Hampshire resulting in three letters in each sport. He was a national-level hammer thrower and was inducted into the UNH Hall of Fame. As a World War II Veteran, he served in Germany and Italy.

He had a farm in Dover, N.H. and taught biology at Dover High School. There, he was also a coach for 15 years where he led the basketball team to the state title in 1942. For the next 23 years, he was a high school principal in Alton, N.H., South Berwick, and Wells, Maine. He was known for his leadership in education and his innovative approach to teaching.

Above all else, he is remembered for his kindness and the respect he gave to all individuals. His daily actions supported his integrity, family values, and unwavering honesty. He found the goodness in all people and was known as a champion of the underdog.

He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Kathleen Ahern; his parents; and three sisters, Dorothy MacLean, Rete Bonner, and Eileen Leach.

He is survived by his wife, Helen H. Flaherty of Wells; four daughters, Kathleen Davidson and her husband Dr. Robin of Clinton, Mass., Luanne Dadura and her husband Edward of Mooresville, N.C., Mary Eisenhard and her husband John of Pavilion, N.Y., and Dorothy Saucier and her husband David of Old Town; three stepchildren, Georgia Rencher and her husband Frank of Kooskia, Idaho, Alan White and his wife Jeanette of Anchorage, Alaska, and David White and his wife Cynthia of Sandwich, N.H.; five sisters, Adelaide Luttrell, Agnes Flaherty, Helen Vankevich, Mary Nelson and Katherine Massell; one brother, Edward Flaherty; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 236 Eldridge Rd. in Wells with Father Joseph Ford. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland, on Friday at 11 a.m.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
