Georganne Hanson

KITTERY - Georganne N. Hanson, 91, of Kittery, died Nov. 27, 2004 at the York Hospital, York.

She was born in Van Buren, Maine on Dec. 25, 1912, the daughter of Florent and Zitee Cyr.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Linwood Hanson who died in 1993.

She was employed for 20 years as a head housekeeper at The Howard Johnson in the Portsmouth traffic circle.

She lived in Kittery and Portsmouth her whole life.

She is survived by two daughters, Brenda M. Gauvey and Judith E. Babine, both of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Gordon; one sister, Yvonne; five grandchildren, Lisa A. Hughes, Wendy Pevehouse, Michael Babine, Jimmy Babine and Gene W. Hughes III; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held today at noon on at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Lawrence, Mass.

Arrangements are entrusted to The J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery.

Isabel Irwin

KITTERY - Isabel A. Irwin, 77, died Nov. 18, 2004 at York Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Montpelier, Vt. to Cipriano and Maria Amor on Jan. 29, 1927. She graduated from the University of Vermont and immediately began her 25 year teaching career at many high schools and colleges. During her time in the Spanish Department at the University of New Hampshire, she received her master's degree and started the Junior Year Abroad program for Spanish students.

After 25 years of teaching, which she loved, she was nevertheless ready for a new career. With some instruction from her sister and from the Gemological Institute of America, she and her daughter Ann, opened a jewelry store, G. Irwin Company, in Kittery in 1987. The business continues on Route 1. She thoroughly enjoyed her time as a jewelry store owner.

She leaves her husband George Irwin of Kittery; three daughters, Ann Pardoe of York, Maria Franco of Oakland, N.J. and Laura Morris of Cape Elizabeth; two sisters, Dolores Monks of Andover, Mass. and Amparo Bliss of Vermont; one brother, Luis Amor of Vermont; seven grandchildren from ages 10 to 25 of whom she was very proud.

A memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Frances Carlson

KITTERY - Frances Evelyn Carlson, 83, formerly of North Haven, Conn., Wolfeboro, N.H., and Kittery, Maine, died Nov. 12, 2004 at the Renaissance Nursing Home, Biddeford after a period of failing health.

Born April 22, 1922 in New Haven, Conn. to Fred and Bertha (Bramble) Goss, she was pre-deceased by her husband Robert H. Carlson. Together they owned and operated Pond View Nursery in North Haven for many years.

An accomplished gardener, cook and seamstress, she enjoyed fishing and music.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Thomas H. and Sandra A. Carlson and Robert J. and Pauline Carlson, both of Rochester; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road in Kittery on Friday at 4 p.m. A reception will immediately follow at the home of Thomas and Sandra Carlson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Joseph Dassel

KENNEBUNK - Joseph Lester Dassel of River Locks Road, Kennebunk, passed away suddenly but quietly in his home on Nov. 5, 2004. He had just celebrated his 86th birthday with family and friends. Evelyn, his beloved wife of 63 years, one daughter, Lorraine Star of Kennebunk, his two grandsons, Christopher and Judson Star, two nephews, Michael Mihalik and Robert Dassel, and one sister, Leona Peck of Buffalo, N.Y. survive him.

He was born in Dunkirk, N.Y. on Oct. 22, 1918. He joined the Navy in 1936 and spent four years serving his country. He loved the Navy and was always proud of his service. He met his wife at a USO dance in Brooklyn, N.Y. while he was serving on, coincidentally, the USS Brooklyn. He was honorably discharged in 1940 and was married on April 16, 1941 at St. Rosalia's Church in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Even though he was working in a defense industry, he re-enlisted in the Navy in 1944 because of his sense of duty and love of his country. He served honorably until the end of World War II.

He worked for Sperry Rand Corporation for 40 years where he was a machinist and a shop steward. He retired in 1980 and moved to Kennebunk to be close to his daughter and grandchildren.

He was a proud member of the Elks for 50 years and was a founding member of Lodge 2008 in Elmont, N.Y. where he served as Exalted Ruler in 1961. He was a tireless worker for Elk charities and youth organizations. At his death, he was a member of the Biddeford Saco, Wells, and Sanford lodges.

He had been in declining health for the past five years but he always kept his sense of humor and love for people. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He was proud of his family, his service in the Navy, his membership in the Elks and being an American. Even though he was ill, he made sure he voted on Election Day.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Wells and he also enjoyed visiting with the friars at the Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk.

The family would like to thank Dr. Steve Johnson, Dr. James Georgitis and his nurses and staff, and Dr. Charles Parent and Dr. Jonathan Shill and the nurses and staff of the Medical Group for their excellent care of Mr. Dassel over the past five years.

Funeral arrangements are at the discretion of the family and will be announced at a later date.

Donations can be made to the Elks National Foundation, 2750 North Lakeview Ave., Chicago, IL 60614 in honor of Mr. Dassel.

Nella Hudon

WELLS - Nella Rose Hudon, 47, of Meetinghouse Road, Wells, died Nov. 13, 2004 in her home lovingly surrounded by her husband, Dennis, her sister, Lynne Sauer and brother-in-law, Wilfred Hudon, and her dogs, Gunner and Chantz, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She went peacefully, as graceful in death as she was in life.

She was born in Portland on Feb. 15, 1957, a daughter of Miles and Dr. Ruth (Endicott) Freeman.

She attended Ogunquit Village School and Wells Elementary School where she met her future husband, Dennis. After graduating from Wells High School, she attended the University of Maine in Portland. Following the university, she attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston for a two-year apprenticeship program for piano technicians.

She loved watching the stars at night, photography, and traveling with her husband. She also enjoyed rubber stamping and spending time at the beach with her girlfriends. She enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors and spent a lot of time out with her dogs. She loved knitting and music, playing six different instruments including piano and guitar.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis, of 23 years; her parents, Miles and Dr. Ruth Endicott Freeman of Ogunquit; one sister, Lynne Freeman-Sauer of Wells; and many nieces and nephews including many friends who called her "Auntie."

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Highpine Baptist Church in Wells with Pastor Stephen Espling officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Maine Children's Cancer Program, 100 Route 1, Unit 107, Scarborough, ME 04074, in her name.

Mary MacDonald

KENNEBUNK - Mary (Tisdale) MacDonald, 83, a resident of Larboard Lane in Kennebunk, died on Nov. 14, 2004 at her home.

She was born on Oct. 19, 1921, in Springfield, Mass., a daughter of John and Irene (Alger) MacDonald.

After graduating from high school, she earned a bachelor of arts degree from Albion College in Albion, Mich.

After raising her six children, she earned her master's of library science degree from the Pratt Institute on Long Island, N.Y. She gave over a decade of service as a reference librarian at the Mamaroneck Free Library in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

She was active as a volunteer at Graves Library in Kennebunkport, the Senior Center in Lower Village Kennebunk, and a participant at "Bodywise" at the University of New England in Biddeford.

She could be seen regularly walking on Gooch's Beach where she collected sea glass and rocks.

She enjoyed reading, knitting, and other hand crafts and watching the seasons change on the marsh.

She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren always looking forward to her large family gatherings several times a year.

She was predeceased by her brother, John MacDonald who died while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.

She is survived by two sons, Keith Scott Perkins of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Marvin Earl Perkins III of Pittstown, N.J.; four daughters, Sandra P. Rosenshein of Lutherville, Md., Cynthia P. Morris of Kennebunkport, Mary P. Morris of Warner, N.H., and Irene P. Glissman of Simsbury, Conn.; one sister, Janet MacDonald Babington of Kingston, Ontario; and 10 grandchildren.

Friends may call on her family from 2 to 5 p.m. today at her home in celebration of her life.

Herbert Miller Jr.

WELLS - Herbert C. Miller Jr., 72, a resident of Bourne Avenue, Moody, died Nov. 5, 2004 at the York Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Lowell, Mass. on April 1, 1932, a son of Herbert C. and Edith (Edmondsen) Miller Sr.

He graduated from Medford High School in Medford, Mass. and Northeastern University of Boston. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was employed by the Raytheon Corporation as an accountant. He was a former owner and proprietor of the Lilly Kemp Catering in Massachusetts for several years.

He and his wife moved to Maine in 1982, where he built homes and sold real estate for several years. He was employed by the town of Wells as a parking lot attendant for the last eight years.

He was a member of the Medford Lodge, Scottish Rite, Aleppo Temple of Wilmington, Mass., the Lions Club of Wells and the Congregational Church of Wells.

He enjoyed cribbage and loved to travel with his wife of 35 years.

He is survived by his wife Carole (Dunlop) Miller, a retired 40-year flight attendant with Delta Airlines; one son, Ian Miller, a ranch manager of Oakdale Calif.; two sisters, Gladys Edie of Kalamazoo, Mich. and Edith LaMarca of Sandwich, Mass.; and one grandson, Justin Miller of California.

A funeral service was held Saturday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells with the Rev. Gordon Miller officiating.

Gladys Shum

YORK - Gladys (McCoubrey) Shum, 96, died Nov. 9, 2004 at Sentry Hill, York Harbor. She previously resided on Agamenticus Road in Cape Neddick.

She was born Sept. 16, 1908 in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland, the third daughter of Samuel G. and Jenny (MeWhirter) McCoubrey.

In 1912, shortly after the loss of the Titanic, she sailed along with her mother and sister to Canada where they joined her father who was involved in the establishment of a paper mill. She recalled the cabin stewardess pointing out icebergs during the ship's passage. She spent her early years in Iroquois Falls, Ontario, 150 miles south of Hudson's Bay. Later, her family moved to Three Rivers, Quebec. In 1937 she went to Boston where she was employed at the Moore & Summers Insurance Company. There, she met Alden F. Shum. They were married Feb. 2, 1937 in York Village. She became a naturalized American citizen in 1940.

In 1942, she and her husband bought an old farm on Agamenticus Road, one mile from Ogunquit Village. At the time she bemoaned the fact that it was so far out of town. Over the years they restored the early 1800's farmhouse, and prior to the installation of plumbing, she often bathed in the summertime under the waterfall on the nearby Josias River.

Over the past 60 years she was involved in many community activities. She was a member of the Old York Garden Club, the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, the Ogunquit Women's Club, and the York Hospital Auxiliary. She logged more than 700 hours as a volunteer at York Hospital. She was one of the first nurse's aids at York Hospital.

For 40 years she was associated in various capacities with the Ogunquit Memorial Library. She retired as a librarian at 80 years of age.

She enjoyed traveling and going to musical concerts with her dear friends. She hooked rugs, one of which won an award at the Eastern States Exposition. She was especially proud of her beautiful flower gardens. She will be remembered as a kind and gentle woman, truly one of the good ones.

She is survived by one nephew, Brian D. McCoubrey, of Wakefield, Mass.; one niece, Barbara H. Grover of Cape Neddick; and many great nephews and nieces. She entrusted her care in her 90s, to her great nephew Michael and his wife Patricia Weare of Cape Neddick.

She was pre-deceased by her husband who died in 1979 and her siblings Margaret, Mary, and David.

There will be no visiting hours.

A memorial service was held on Saturday at St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor.

Margaret Cibulas

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Margaret (Enos Zumstag) Cibulas, 95, of Bridgeport, Conn., beloved wife of the late Erwin Cibulas, died Nov. 8, 2004 in Cambridge Manor, Fairfield, Conn.

She was a lifelong resident of Bridgeport, Conn. and a graduate of Central High School as well as a former employee of the City Trust Company.

She is survived by one son, Erwin Jr. and his wife, Janet of Ogunquit; one daughter, Phyllis Kepshire of Fairfield, Conn.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Kathy Couture

YORK - Kathy Ann Couture, 47, of Sewalls Pasture Road, Cape Neddick, died Nov. 14, 2004 after a battle with breast cancer.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1956 in Augusta, the daughter of George and Joan Anderson. She was raised in North Berwick, and attended SAD 60. She graduated from Noble High School with the class of 1975. Her father was residing principal of Noble High School, who retired in 1978.

She resided in Cape Neddick for more than 25 years and was employed at various large insurance, financial and retail businesses from Boston, Mass. to Freeport, Maine. She attended New Hampshire College and graduated in the class of 1983 with a major in general management. She had been working in computer software since 1983 and was a software contracting consultant for the last 12 years.

She loved building her own homes, outdoor activities including Caribbean cruises, karate and family gatherings all of which she shared with her loving husband, Marc Couture, of 26 years.

She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her, including her husband; four sisters, Carol Fitzpatrick and her husband John, of Accord, N.Y., Janice Anderson of Lincoln, Janet Murch and her husband Mike, of Winterport, and Laurie Belden and her husband Jay, of Durham, Maine; one brother, Robert Anderson of Liberty; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.

Public visitation will be held Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York.
