Frank Waldron Jr.

KITTERY - Frank T. Waldron Jr., 87, of Eliot Road in Kittery, died on Dec. 19, 2004 at York Hospital.

Born in Kittery Point on March 30, 1917, he was a son of Frank T. Sr. and Ella May (Sawyer) Waldron. At an early age he moved with his family to Kittery where he attended local schools.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army, serving in the 3rd Infantry, he was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Kittery / Eliot Veterans of Foreign Wars. Upon separation of service from the Army, he entered the work force at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he was employed in shop 72 as a riggers helper, he later worked in shop 07 as a mason, retiring after 35 years of service in 1971.

He enjoyed the out of doors especially deer hunting, he also enjoyed watching football, and was a great fan of the New England Patriots.

His first love was unquestionably his family. His wife Sarah (Leavitt) Waldron, was a very important part of his life until her death in 1998. He enjoyed his children, and was always glad to help them however he could.

He is survived by his loving family; one son, Howard and his wife Mona Waldron of Cornish; two daughters, Muriel and her husband Stephen Foley of Kittery and Jean and her husband Robert Walker of Kittery; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Sarah, a brother Paul Waldron, and three sisters, Gertrude C. Thompson, Bertha Gerry, and Pauline Gerry.

A funeral will be celebrated today at 11 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery, with the Rev. Stephen Aldrich officiating.

Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406, or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Elmer Ward Jr.

GREENBRAE, Calif. - Elmer L. Ward Jr. died at Marian General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif. on Dec. 14 following a lengthy illness. He was 79.

Mr. Ward was a graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover (1943), Harvard College(1947) and the Harvard Business School(1950). During WWII he served as a Naval pilot. Aviation became a lifelong passion and he continued to fly small planes until a few years before his death.

Mr. Ward was an avid and a talented golfer, who competed in both the U.S. and British Amateur championships. He was a former member of Somerset Hills, Baltusrol, Pine Valley, Shinnecock, The Country Club, and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in Scotland. Mr. Ward was also a past member of The Racquet Club and The Brook in New York City.

In 1952, he joined Palm Beach, then a subsidiary of the textile company, Goodall-Sanford, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Palm Beach, Inc. was later purchased and taken public. Under Mr. Ward’s leadership, the company evolved from a small suit manufacturer to a Fortune 500 conglomerate of apparel manufacturers listed on the NYSE. Mr. Ward was the president and CEO of Palm Beach Inc. during the late 1960s and the Chairman of the Board from 1972-1987.

Mr. Ward also served on several Boards of Directors, including Eastern Airlines, MidLantic Bank, Coca-Cola Bottling Company of NY and Callaway Golf Company, where he became a manager for the apparel licensing division in the 1990s.

Following a small family ceremony in San Francisco on December 18th, there will be a funeral service and Interment will be held in Kennebunk, Maine later next spring.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Joanne James

KENNEBUNK - Joanne (Wallace) James, 53, passed away peacefully at her home in San Francisco, Calif. Dec. 1, 2004, surrounded by loved ones. She had valiantly fought lung cancer for two years.

She was born in New York Feb. 23, 1951, the daughter of the late Helen (MacConney) James and Robert W. James of Kennebunk. She grew up in New York, New Jersey and New England. She graduated from Russell Sage College in 1973. After college she served in the AmeriCorps VISTA program (Volunteers in Service to America), and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1970s.

She was an athletic lover of the outdoors and a gracious friend, as well as an accomplished and talented commercial painter. She participated for many years in the San Francisco Western Round-Up Conference and was a member of the Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco where she found comfort, spiritual guidance and opportunities to share her many gifts with others.

In addition to her father, she is survived by and was loved by her life partner, Mary Skinner; her twin brother Ronald James; and other siblings, Lucile Bonet, Linda O'Connor, William James, Jonathan James, Christine James, and Jennifer Grant; one grandson, Peyton Skinner; many dear friends in both the Bay Area and elsewhere; and her closest companions in life, her dogs, Rusty and Billy.

A celebration of her life was held on Dec. 11 at the Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco. A memorial service for her will be held in Maine in the coming spring.

Scott Currier

KITTERY - Scott Joseph Currier, 38, of Kittery Point, passed away suddenly on Dec. 13, 2004.

He was a loving husband, son, grandson, brother, uncle and dear friend to hundreds. He was the son of Charles and Rose Currier

He was a self-made real estate developer who was proud of his livelihood. His pride and joy was the home he built and made with his wife, Jessica.

Their beautiful home was open to their large family and extended group of close friends, and was the site of many happy gatherings, including their wedding in the summer of 2002. He will be best remembered as a gregarious man with generous spirit and caring ways toward all he knew. He will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Jessica (Gooch) Currier and their best friend, Hobie; a large family including grandmother, Antionette Counter, and his brother and sisters families, Kevin and Mary Currier and their children Keegan and Caitlyn, Marc and Suzanne (Currier) Genest and their children, Dylan and Marley, and Moe and Kellie (Currier) Bassett and their children, Reed, Marissa and Adam.

His own words best reflect the life he lived and his memory that will live on in our hearts.

"I am thankful for Saturday evenings wrapped up all warm and comfortable in bed watching TV with my wonderful wife, our big brown dog and our big fat orange cat.

"All four of us can look around at any time and rest easy knowing how lucky we are to have each other. I think I speak for all four of us when I say there is no other place or no one else we would rather spend our time with. That's something to be thankful for!! Life is grand. Remember to take the time to enjoy it."

A funeral was held on Tuesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church "South Church" at 292 State St., Portsmouth, N.H.

Arline Ferm

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Arline G. Ferm, 91, of Berwick, died Dec. 20, 2004 at Rochester Manor in Rochester, N.H. She was born in Sterling, Conn. on July 2, 1913, a daughter of George and Nellie (Brown) Gallup.

She moved to Maine in 1921. She graduated from Berwick High School in 1931.

She married Thure A. Ferm on Dec. 25, 1935 and was married for 60 years. They lived on Knox Lane in Berwick for many years.

She was employed by the Berwick schools as a secretary for 10 years. For most of her life, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Eastern Star of South Berwick. She was also a very active member of the Methodist Church of Berwick in the Gleaners Group. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, and spending time with her loving family.

She is survived by one son, Robert Ferm and his wife Janet of Manchester, Mass.; one daughter, Carol Broadbent and her husband Richard of West Lebanon, Maine; and five grandchildren, Lindsey Ferm, Erik Ferm, Leslie Broadbent, Craig Broadbent and his wife Bethany, and Victoria Ingersoll and her husband Peter.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thure A. Ferm, two brothers, Paul and Harold Gallup and a grandson, Alexander Ferm.

There will be a funeral service today at 11 a.m. on at the United Methodist Church in Berwick. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick, in the spring of 2005.

Ida Fraser

KENNEBUNK - Ida Catherine (Gaudet) Fraser left the world on Dec. 14, 2004, having lived almost 97 years in devoted service to her family and friends.

Born in Tignish, Prince Edward Island on Jan. 12, 1908 to Dugald Gaudet and Theresa (Gallant) Gaudet, she left the island at the age of 11 when her mother died. The family moved to Mexico, Maine, where her father found employment and had family to help care for his four children.

She graduated from Gorham Normal School in 1932 and began a rewarding teaching career that lasted for 40 years. She was the last teacher to preside in a one-room schoolhouse in Frye, Maine. Her day began by lighting the fire for heat and breaking the ice on the water bucket. She also taught in the Rumford-Mexico area and spent many happy years in service of the West Peru Elementary School from which she retired in 1970. She and her husband of 56 years, Babe Fraser, moved to Kennebunk in 1970 and spent their retirement years surrounded by their children and grandchildren. They were loved and cherished.

She was a famous cook. Her dinner table accommodated a great number of family and friends from around the world. No one who knew her could forget her wonderful Saturday night suppers. She leaves a world grateful for her generous hospitality and sincerity.

She spent four years in the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Home and became part of the family in this wonderful facility. She is grateful to the staff and fellow residents for the caring and comfort that was administered daily. As in the rest of her life, she was known here as a courageous, loving woman of great wisdom and humility.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donia J. Fraser (Babe) in 1988.

She leaves her children, Theodore Fraser of Kennebunk, Maine and Providence, R.I., John Barry Fraser and Monica Conly Fraser Graves of Kennebunk Beach, and North Hampton, N.H., and Cynthia Fraser Graves and her partner, Dominic Cacciola of West Kennebunk; two grandchildren, Rebecca Graves of Princeton, N.J. and Eben Morse Graves of New Windsor, N.Y. Newer members of the family include her granddaughter's husband, Ahmet Bayazitoglu; one great-grandson, Osman Graves Bayazitoglu; and her grandson's finance, Mariana Torrens.

A Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Joseph's Church in Biddeford on Friday. Interment will be in the spring.

Patricia Gordon

MADRID, N.Y. - Patricia Gordon, 77, died Dec. 15, 2004 at Fletcher-Allen Medical Center, Burlington, Vt.

She was born Verna Patricia Weatherbee in Haverhill, Mass. on June 8, 1927.

She is survived by her husband, of 59 years, Merton Gordon; five sons, Michael and his wife Nancy of Lyman, Bruce and his wife Dale of Madrid, N.Y., Glen and his wife Debbie of Potsdam, N.Y., Jon and his wife Cherie of Madrid, N.Y. and Robbie of Russell, N.Y.; one sister, Janet Brady of Kerrville, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Toussaint and Rosemary Gordon, both of Kennebunk; 13 grandchildren; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother Donald Thompson and a granddaughter, Patty Gordon.

In her lifetime, she lived in many places including Haverhill, Mass., Old Orchard Beach, Kennebunk and Lyman, Maine, Kerrville and Ingram, Texas, Cairo, Egypt, Abu Dhabi and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and London, England. She traveled to Greece, Scotland, Malaysia and Spain.

She was a homemaker who loved cooking, gardening, reading and being in the company of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Prayers were said Tuesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, followed by a graveside committal service at the Gordon Private Cemetery, Lyman.

Her family suggests that donations in her memory be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, 16 South Winooski Ave., Burlington, VT 05401.

Ann Moulton

KENNEBUNKPORT - Ann F. Moulton, 85, a resident of Chestnut Street, Kennebunkport died Dec. 17, 2004 at her home after a long illness, surrounded by her family.

She was born on Dec. 1, 1919 in Bangor, the daughter of Joseph and Alice (Tracy) Henry.

She attended parochial schools in Brewer. She moved to Portland in the late 1930s. She worked as a ship fitter at New England Shipbuilding in South Portland during World War II. In 2000 she was awarded the "Rosie the Riveter" for her service during the war. Even more importantly, it was during her years at the shipyard where she met and married her husband of 60 years, Frank (Ray) Moulton in 1944.

She and her husband moved to Kennebunkport in 1945. She worked at Kesslen Shoe for several years until they purchased the Anvil Apartments. She managed the apartments for many years.

She always loved art and loved painting from Arundel Point locations. She and Ray had a camp Down East and she loved painting scenes looking across the lake. She had a real love of nature and always appreciated the beauty around her. She was an avid bird lover and watcher. She enjoyed history, especially Maine history, often times passing along historical wisdom to her eight grandchildren. "Shoot pictures not guns" was her motto. She loved the ocean, lighthouses, and bright sunshine. She was always walking, and especially loved walking down the river and around the point.

She and her husband were very active in the Wells Grange for many years. After his retirement in 1984, they spent winter months in Lake Whales, Fla. with family and many friends at Saddlebag Lake Resort.

She was predeceased by a daughter Ann A. Henry, and a sister Alvina Jordan.

She is survived and missed very much by her husband, Frank (Ray) Moulton; one daughter, Donna (Della) Evans; two sisters, Mary Hood and her husband Nelson of Auburn, Maine and Florida, and Ginny Williamson and her husband Buster of Lake Umbagog, Maine and Florida; eight beloved grandchildren of Maine, New Hampshire, Tennessee, and Texas; and 10 beloved great-grandchildren of Maine and Knoxville, Tenn.

There will be a private graveside service at Arundel cemetery in Kennebunkport.

David Shields Sr.

KENNEBUNK - David Hill Shields Sr., 66, of High Street died Dec. 20, 2004 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born May 5, 1938 in Biddeford, a son of Frederick and Irene (Hill) Shields. After graduating from Kennebunk High School in 1956, he earned his associate's degree in business administration in 1958 from Nichols Junior College in Dudley, Mass. While in school, he proved to be an outstanding athlete by winning the Jake Jackson award for sportsmanship and lettering in high school. He followed that stellar performance by lettering in both soccer and lacrosse at Nichols Junior College. He was a member of the Maine National Guard for more than 10 years.

He was the third generation to take over and run Shields Meats and Produce in Kennebunk. He owned the business for more than 45 years of its 84-year history.

He was very active in the town that he loved. He was a town of Kennebunk Board Selectman for more 28 years. He served as an EMT and Kennebunk Fire Departments from 1961-1994. He served as the assistant fire chief beginning in 1980 for 10 years. He was involved with the Kennebunk / Kennebunkport Athletic Boosters, Gary Pike Foundation, Kennebunk Parks and Recreation Board, Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, a member of York Lodge of Masons in Kennebunk and Kora Shrine Temple of Lewiston, and was a York County Deputy Sheriff. In addition, he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Rotary Award in 1994 and the Kennebunk Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award in 1974.

He was predeceased by his parents and his step- mother, Susan (Bean) Shields.

He is survived by his wife and companion of 45 years, Sondra (Stevens) Shields of Kennebunk; four sons, David H. Shields Jr. and his wife Jeni of Cape Elizabeth, Gregory A. Shields and wife Sara Legere, Dean F. Shields and wife Michelle and Steven O. Shields and wife Rose, all of Kennebunk; one daughter, Kacey E. Shaw and husband Allen L. Shaw Jr. of Mountaintop, Pa.; three brothers, Frederick H. (Ted) Shields Jr. and his wife Marie, James H. Shields and his wife Minerva, all of Kennebunk and Christopher O. Shields and his wife Cecile of Greenville; 15 grandchildren, Brenden, Austin, Phoebe, Lindsey, Kelsey, Gibson, Caleb, Alden, Eric, Sydney, Keisha, Jesse, and Luke Shields, Ehryn and Allen Shaw.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Christ Church, Dane Street, Kennebunk with the Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating the service. Interment will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk in the spring.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the David H. Shields Sr. Scholarship fund in care of Kennebunk Savings Bank, Financial Center, PO Box 770, Portland Road, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Orris Allen

OGUNQUIT - Orris Allen, 78, of Agamenticus Road, Ogunquit, died Dec. 17, 2004 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H.

He was born on May 16, 1926 in Newburyport, Mass., a son of Daniel and Gladys (Sargent) Allen. After graduating from Berwick Academy, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for the Moore Business Forms for more than 40 years, retiring as a manufacturing manager. He was a member of Ocean Lodge 142, AF&AM, in Wells and of the Kidder Old Timers Club.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Larsen) Allen in 1987.

He is survived by his significant other, Sandra Smith of Dover, N.H.; two sons, Kirk M. and Patricia G. Allen of Gorham, and Brian M. and Benita Y. Allen of Topsham; one daughter, Wendy S. Brown and her husband, Mark J. of South Berwick; six grandchildren, Jennifer T. Allen, Matthew O. Allen, Shaughn J. Allen, Chelsea M. Allen, Catherin E. Brown and Emily R. Brown; one sister-in-law, Barbara Allen of Florida.

A funeral was held Monday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York.

In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Lillian Baker

KENNEBUNKPORT - Lillian (DiGiglio) Baker, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home on the morning of Dec. 20, 2004 surrounded by family and friends.

Born Nov. 24, 1928 in Fort Lee, N.J., she attended Holy Angels Academy and graduated summa cum laude from Fordham University in 1950 with a major in philosophy. While at Fordham she met her husband, the late Charles William Baker, a career Air Force officer. After college, she worked as social worker in New York City before the couple was stationed in the United Kingdom in 1953. After many other postings, she and her husband moved to Kennebunkport in 1965 where they raised three daughters. She also spent years as a survey research caseworker through the University of Michigan.

She was a devout Catholic, who loved to study, live and teach her faith, especially to children. She was a long-time head of religious education for St. Martha parish. Through her close association with St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk, she became a member of the Third Order of Secular Franciscan and was the Chapter Minister for the order for many years. She was an ardent supporter of the monastery and, before her illness, was a leader in organizing Friends of St. Anthony's, a group of people dedicated to preserving and restoring the monastery's grounds and facilities, while also preserving its religious function as a Franciscan Monastery.

Throughout her life, she maintained a vibrant intellectual spirit, through extensive reading and personal study. She pursued graduate studies in children's literature and maintained an active real estate license. She was also an outstanding Italian cook. Her home was the center of most family gatherings and celebrations and according to her grandchildren, "everything always tastes better at Grammy's house."

She is survived by her two sisters, Catherine Santamarina and Amelia Pisano of New Jersey; three daughters and their spouses: Mary Elizabeth Baker and David J. Menapace of Kennebunk, Ruth P. Baker and Barry K. Maddix of York, and Richard Pitre of Portland; 12 grandchildren, Sarah Maddix, Clare Menapace, Jordan Kirwin, Emily Maddix, Nathaniel Maddix, Keith Maddix, Nicola Menapace, Bailey Baker, Ethan Maddix, Elizabeth Baker-Pitre, Charles Baker-Pitre, and Lydia Baker-Pitre.

She was pre-deceased by her loving husband, Charles, her brother, Leonard DiGiglio and her granddaughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Maddix.

Lillian, "Lil," Grammy, will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.

Service arrangements are pending, and information will be available through Bibber Funeral Home in Kennebunk.
