Earle Dutch

NORTH BERWICK - Earle C. Dutch, 86, died suddenly at his home on Somersworth Road, Jan. 7, 2005. He was born in North Berwick on Aug. 16, 1918, the son of Chester Floyd and Jessie (Chase) Dutch.

Growing up on a large farm and being educated in a good school system were pluses for him. The value of a sound education and hard work were basic principles he acquired from his father and instilled in his sons and grandsons.

The 400-plus acre Dutch Farm afforded many fields, streams, and woods. This was nature's paradise for Earle Dutch, who early in life realized that he loved the outdoors and all that nature provided. Trout fishing in the two well-stocked brooks that ran through the farm, deer hunting in its dense white pine woods in the fall, and hunting rabbits in the winter were great sports, but it was trapping of fur that was most rewarding. From the day when he first tended his brother Bradford's trap line, he was hooked on a sport that probably changed his life forever. He became very successful and one of the best-known trappers in the state of Maine and was elected to the Maine Trappers Association Hall of Fame in October of 2001.

He was a conservationist and loved nature and wildlife. He worked closely with the game wardens and biologists monitoring game and their habitat in the area. He taught classes in trapping and helped certify trappers and he was always available to remove a skunk, raccoon, beaver and any other nuisance animal to a better environment.

He combined his schooling, farm chores, and love for the outdoors with a fine athletic career. He was a standout athlete in football, basketball, and baseball at North Berwick High School.

Following his father's death and graduating high school, he worked for his brother Floyd in the meat business. He took over the business in 1962 and was very successful until his retirement in 1986.

He married Marie Andersen of Watertown, Mass., in North Berwick, Feb. 25, 1939. Marie died Sept. 4, 1999, two days following her 82nd birthday. They were married for more than 60 years.

He and his wife loved to travel and they made several trips to Europe together, plus cruises to the Caribbean, and South America. They both earned Grand Mariner status with the Holland American Line. On one voyage, country-boy he out shot a member of the Swedish National Team at trap shooting at the ship's stern and was awarded a porcelain vase. They enjoyed winter vacations at Ormond Beach, Fla., with their friends and he continued for several years after Marie's death.

He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of North Berwick and held the position of deacon for 60 years. He was also a member of the Yorkshire Lodge IOOF ( International Order of Odd Fellows) in North Berwick, York County Trappers Association, Maine Trappers Association, and Sportsmen's Alliance of Maine. He was a loyal Red Sox fan and followed UNH men's hockey.

He is survived by his two sons, David E., his wife Linda, and Kenneth H. and his wife Sonja, all of North Berwick; two grandsons, Jeremiah B. Dutch of Yokohama, Japan, and Erik W. Dutch of Milton, N.H.; one brother, Bradford M. and his wife Dorothy of North Berwick; one sister, Alice A. and her husband Malcolm Foss of Dover, N.H.; one brother-in-law, Abe Kaloustian of Natick, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. Least to forget his two step-granddaughters, Brenda M. (Mrs. Stephen McCarthy) of North Berwick and Lisa L. (Mrs. Robert Gerry Jr.) of Sanford; and step-great grandchildren, Meghan Gerry, Julie and Sean McCarthy.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in North Berwick. Interment followed in the Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick.

Family flowers only. Donations may be made the Earle C. Dutch Outdoor Education Scholarship at Noble High School, c/o Paul Andrade MSAD 60, PO Box 819, North Berwick, ME 03906.

David Grant

KITTERY - David Campbell Grant, 62, of Halstead Street in Kittery, died unexpectedly on the evening of Jan. 8, 2004, at York Hospital.

Born in Mt. Desert Island on Oct. 15, 1942, he was a son of George and Lucille (Campbell) Grant. He attended local schools graduating from Mt. Desert High School. He served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserves.

His career as a barber spanned a total of 42 years. He was well known in the Portsmouth Area Community for the years he spent at Bernard's Barber Shop in Portsmouth, serving as a barber, and mostly as a friend to so many in the community. His day often began at three or four in the morning, opening the shop for the early crowd which had formed over the years. He saw Bernard's through several moves first from its location downtown, near the Colonial Theatre, to its location on Congress near Middle Street, after the fire in 1963, then to its current location on Bridge Street in 1979. He started his career working for Bernie Lajoie and took over as owner for many years until he sold it to his dear friend John Carroll in 1993. Even after its sale he remained on keeping a full day and enjoying all his customers, even after a full day it was not unusual for him to pack a few necessities and go to a customer who was ill or shut-in and give them a cut at home before returning to his family.

He enjoyed so much of life, from antiquing, where he added to his collection of razors, and the children's books he so enjoyed collecting, to his love of Westerns featuring his favorites, John Wayne, Gene Autry and the like, to his love of sports especially the Red Sox and his eventual enjoyment of the Patriots after beginning a New York Giants fan. He was an avid rock 'n roll music fan enjoying "The Boss" Bruce Springstein, and most any other rock 'n roll music. It was not uncommon for him to play U2 while working or to travel to a concert to see his favorites perform.

For anyone that truly knew him, the community has lost a generous, kind and dedicated friend and his family has lost a loving, and wonderful member.

He leaves his loving wife of 39 years Shirley (Clauson) Grant of Kittery; one daughter, Wendy Grant and her partner Nathan Webster of Portsmouth; one sister, Carol Howatt of South West Harbor; one brother and his wife, George and Lucille Grant of Newport, Maine; three nephews; one niece; and one great niece.

He was predeceased by his daughter Kimberly Grant in 1989.

A funeral will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the South Church in Portsmouth at 292 State St. Friends may visit with his family today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery, ME 03904.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Kittery Fire Association, Walker Street, Kittery, ME 03904, or to the American Red Cross "Tsunami Relief."

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
