Meredith Clement

NORTH BERWICK - Meredith F. Clement, 84, passed away peacefully at home in North Berwick surrounded by his family. Known as "Pap" to many, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

One of four sons, he was born Feb. 28, 1920 to Roger and Ida (Ricker) Clement. He went to public school in Berwick. After the death of his father, he and two of his brothers, James and George, operated the Clement farm. In 1941, he went to welding school in South Portland and worked on World War II Liberty ships. He was married to Stella Thompson in 1943 before being called to serve in the United States Army. During World War II, he spent some time in Europe with the 5th Infantry. After his service years, he worked in construction with Clement and Wentworth and then for the State of Maine Highway Division as highway foreman for 34 years. After retirement, he was road commissioner for North Berwick for a year (1979-1980), worked part time for SAD 60 School District, and was a VIP fan for Noble Girls Basketball (1989-1994). He was also a member of the American Legion Quint Cheney Post 87 in North Berwick and the Disabled American Veterans.

He was predeceased by his brothers, James, George and John.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Clement, two sons, Dale Clement and daughter-in-law Pamela and Robert Clement, all of North Berwick; three grandchildren, Anthony Clement and his wife Jodi, great-grandson Nicholas all of Milton, Fla., and Sheri Clement and her husband Joel Levesque, and great granddaughter Jillian, all of Windham, Maine and Amy Clement of Nottingham, N.H.; and also a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside memorial service was held Tuesday, in the Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.

Christopher Dewolf

KITTERY - Christopher R. Dewolf, 41, of Dennett Road in Kittery, died on Jan. 6, 2004 in Portsmouth, N.H., the result of a traffic crash.

He was born in Biloxi, Miss. on Nov. 25, 1964, to Richard and Elizabeth Dewolf. He attended schools in Swanton, Vt. and graduated from Portsmouth High School with the class of 1983, where he played baseball as a freshman, and soccer and hockey throughout his high school career. He received an associate's degree from Southern Maine Technical College and a bachelor's degree in organizational management from Daniel Webster College.

He met his high school sweetheart Kelly Johnson, while they attended Central Baptist Church together, and in 1986 were married and shared a wonderful life together as husband and wife and best friends.

He shared his passion for hockey and working with youth, as junior varsity hockey coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School for several years before becoming varsity hockey coach at Marshwood High School. He also coached Dover Youth Hockey for many years.

He had a passion for his chosen profession, fire fighting. His love of the job was evident by the enthusiasm he brought to work every day and the relationships he fostered through his years of service. He began his fire-fighting career as a call firefighter with the town of Kittery, serving in a number of capacities and forming many lasting friendships. In 1987, he was hired by the City of Dover Fire Department, serving as a firefighter, paramedic and lieutenant. He was currently employed by the Newington Fire Department, as a lieutenant. His dedication and knowledge of the job earned him the respect of many colleagues throughout the country. He was active in training as an instructor for New Hampshire Fire Standards and Training, and received extensive training at the National Fire Academy. He enjoyed his work with the Fire Emergency Training Network (FETN), where he served as a correspondent. He was one of the first to provide coverage at the Pentagon during the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

He was an avid Red Sox fan and Civil War buff.

His first love however was undoubtedly his family.

He enjoyed time spent with his loving wife Kelly (Johnson) Dewolf, and his two wonderful children Lindsay Rebekah and Jonathan Mark Dewolf, who will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his father, Richard and his wife Joanne Dewolf of Greenland, N.H.; one brother, Shawn and his wife Lynn Dewolf of North Berwick; one step-brother, Michael Scherb of Portland; one step-sister, Katie Scherb of Portsmouth, N.H.; two uncles, David and his wife Cynthia Harris of Orange, Mass., and Les and his wife Enise Cromack of Montague, Mass.; his in-laws, Ken and Nancy Johnson of Kittery, and brother-in-law, Eric and his wife Elizabeth Johnson of York.

A funeral was held on Tuesday at his church, the Eliot Baptist Church on Route 236 in Eliot.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made in memory of his mother Elizabeth, to the American Cancer Society 1599 Clifton Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Felicia Dorman

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Felicia Jean Dorman was born Felicia Jean Burkott, to the late Walter and Rosalie (Penas) Burkott on Sept. 6, 1940. She died on Feb. 11, 2005 after a two-month illness.

She was a 1958 graduate of Westfield High School, and attended Holyoke Community College. She worked at Columbia Bicycle, The Westfield School Department, and the United States post office in Springfield, Mass., where she retired in 2003.

Her hobbies were quilting, embroidery, knitting, gardening and hooked rugs. Her favorite pastimes were spending time with her animals, and travel. In the last few years, she had traveled to Singapore, Hawaii, the Netherlands, Thailand, Switzerland, Mexico, Italy, Japan, France, Kenya, Monaco, England, Alaska, the Caribbean, and several other U.S. destinations.

She leaves her husband of 45 years, Wayne A. Dorman; three children, Gayle Kolodziej of West Springfield, Mass., Dr. Sharon Dorman of Norwalk, Ohio and Kennebunkport, Maine and Dawn Soto of Westfield, Mass.; one brother, Brent Burkott of Westfield; one sister, Elaine McCants of South Carolina; three grandchildren, Melissa Soto, Brandon Soto, and Matthew Kolodziej; and her St. Bernard, Molly.

She was predeceased by a brother, Walter Burkott Jr.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk; or the Frankie Fund to help animals at 171 Union St., Springfield, MA 01105.

Marian Adams

ELIOT - Marian Frances Adams, 82, of Main Street in Eliot, died suddenly on Feb. 14, 2005 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Eliot on July 26, 1922, she was a daughter of Charles H. and Esther M. (Spinney) Hubbard. She was a 1940 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

A lifelong resident of Eliot, she was born and raised and lived with her family until her death in the only home she knew on Main Street in Eliot. In 1949 she met and married her loving husband of many years Charles Adams. Together they enjoyed raising a family, after her work career started in her younger years, she took time from work to spend at home raising her family, enjoying her role as a wife, mother, den mother and taking an active part in all the activities her children were a part of.

After her children had grown she returned to work at Rival Foods in Portsmouth as a bookkeeper, she worked for many years with Traip Academy on a Regional Academic Marine Program, funded in part by the Federal Government, a program which taught Oceanography and Marine Biology to high school students. She was later employed by the National Bureau of Credit as the office manager and by CCS in Portsmouth, retiring in the mid 1980s. Her first love was undoubtedly her family, she enjoyed watching her grandchildren in any sport they were a part of, she was a regular attendee at community sporting events, enjoying basketball and football.

She with her husband enjoyed traveling across the country several times in their camper, she enjoyed bus trips with her friends and all types of handiwork including knitting and sewing. She enjoyed her friends, together with the other “Sunshine Girls” they enjoyed breakfast at many local restaurants.

She is survived by her loving family, her daughters, Diane and her husband Jim Zimmermann of Wilbraham, Mass. and their children Kristel Castonguy, Kathy Zimmermann and Tiffany Zimmermann, Nancy and Robert Fontaine of Eliot and their daughters, Stephanie Tarr, Kristine Fontaine and Shelby Fontaine, one son, Ralph Stephen Adams and his wife Linda of Eliot and their children, Angela Adams and Charles Adams II; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend and neighbor Bonnie McKowen.

She was predeceased by her husband Charles in 1995.

A service was held Feb. 18 at the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Family flowers only; donations may be made in her memory to a charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Christine Bates

Berwick – Christine Bates, 98, of Berwick Road, died Feb. 14, 2005 at her residence.

She was born on April 16, 1906, the daughter of Noah W. and Nettie L. (Toothaker) Randall.

She attended local schools and was a homemaker all of her life.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and its Women’s Society.

Her husband, William E. Bates, died in February of 1988. She is also predeceased by two sisters, Agnes Randall who died in 1989 and Ruth Randall who died in 2002.

She is survived by one son, Roger of Fairfield, Pa.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.

Arrangements are by Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick.

Cynthia Cantwell

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Cynthia J. Cantwell, 65, of Fort Pierce, died on Feb. 9, 2005. She was a native of Barrington, N.H., she moved to Fort Pierce from Eliot, Maine 24 years ago.

She was a bookkeeper for a truck brokerage firm. She also enjoyed needlework, traveling, and reading.

She is survived by her husband Edward D. Cantwell of Fort Pierce; three sons, Edward Cantwell Jr. of Farmington, N.H., David Cantwell of Vero Beach, Fla., and Donald Cantwell of Tampa, Fla.; two daughters, Sharon Travis of Coco, Fla., and Carole Labadie of Brevard, N.C.; three brothers, Everett Landry of Fort Pierce, Eugene Landry and James Landry Jr. both of Barrington, N.H.; one sister, Shirley Gilmore of Fort Pierce, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life was held on Feb. 12, in Vero Beach.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Local arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Harold Crichton

BIDDEFORD - Harold L. Crichton, 87, and formerly of Mars Hill, died Feb. 20, 2005 at Shaw House, Partners in Care Giving, in Biddeford.

He was born in Mars Hill, Maine on May 20, 1917, a son of David and Annie May (Montgomery) Crichton.

He attended local schools there and worked for Sears and Roebuck for many years in management. He had also sold real estate for a time.

He enjoyed gardening and was also an Eagle Scout.

He is predeceased by his wife, Patricia Findland; and four beloved brothers, James, Robert, Philip and Paul.

He is survived by his daughter, Marion Crichton King of Kennebunkport; two granddaughters, Allison Mary Lindy and her husband, Matthew of Chicago and Lauren Crichton King of Boston, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at St. David’s Church, Route 1, Kennebunk.

Burial will be at the Kings Grove cemetery in Mars Hill in the spring.

Ruth Howard

WELLS - Ruth P. Howard, 80, of the Renaissance Nursing Home in Biddeford, formerly of Skinner Mill Road, Wells, died Feb. 9, 2005 at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born June 27, 1924 in Hackensack, N.J., the daughter of Oscar and Ruth (Meeker) Tischbein. She and her husband Walter lived in New Jersey then retired in Maine in the early ‘70s. She worked for the York County Coast Star and was an integral part in starting Laudholm Farm Trust. She loved every animal and bird, gardening, and rowing to the ocean on the Merriland River.

She is predeceased by her husband, Walter and her brother, Alan Tischbein.

She is survived by two nieces, Jill Tischbein and Amy Cramer of Kingwood, Texas; one nephew, Alan Tischbein of Upper Saddle River, N.J.; one sister-in-law Janet Tischbein of Ramsey, N.J.; close friends Elaine Triplett and Robert McLaughlin; several cousins and friends.

A funeral service and Interment will be held in the spring of 2005.

Lawrence Johnson

WELLS - Lawrence E. Johnson, 82, of Walnut Street, passed away Feb. 19, 2005 in York Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born May 21, 1922 in North Berwick, the only child of Floyd R. and Mildred (Johnson) Johnson. He was a graduate of North Berwick High School. He worked for many years at D’Arcy’s Mill in North Berwick before working as an assembler at Hussey Manufacturing in North Berwick.

He was an avid sports fan who followed the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He had collected stamps for his entire life.

He is survived by one step-son, William Stumpf of Wells and one step-daughter Diane L. Stumpf of Sanford; and his aunts and uncles, Harvey and Elizabeth Johnson and Haven McCrillis, all of North Berwick; and his former wife and friend, Marjorie Johnson of Sanford.

A funeral was held Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Spring Interment will be in the Hillside cemetery in North Berwick.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Merle McCollumn

KITTERY - Merle “Mike” L. McCollumn, 74, of Hartley Farm Lane in Kittery, died on Feb. 17, 2005 at his home surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Hornell, N.Y. on April 4, 1930, a son of Raymond Harry and Teresa Elizabeth (Stanley) McCollumn, he attended local schools graduating from Hornell High School.

He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force for four years during the Korean War. Following his service to his country he was employed as an air traffic controller, until his retirement.

He was a member of Saint Raphael’s Parish, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post 0178.

He was a very talented artist, working in oil, woodcarving, and sculpture. He was also talented in furniture building.

He lived with his wife of nearly 50 years Mary Ellen in Florida, N.C., Delaware and New York State before moving to Kittery in 1996.

One of his proudest achievements for a lasting legacy is the beautiful stone wall that graces the front of his property in Kittery. This he worked on while receiving chemotherapy for cancer during the summer of 2004.His family will be forever grateful for the loving care and support given to him during this time, by the staff at the Oncology Department at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He is survived by his loving family who will miss him dearly. They include his loving wife Mary Ellen (Mangold) McCollumn of Kittery; one son and his wife Michael John and Catherine McCollumn of Syracuse, N.Y.; two daughters, Kathleen Ann McCollumn of Lunenberg, Mass. and Patricia Ellen McCollumn of Kittery; one granddaughter, Meaghan Elizabeth McCollumn of Syracuse, N.Y.; three brothers, Gerald McCollumn of Hornell, N.Y., Robert McCollumn of Hornell, N.Y., and William McCollumn of West Henrietta, N.Y.; four sisters, Mary Delap of Painted Post, N.Y., Carolyn Amell of Painted Post, N.Y., Sally Bragg of Waterloo, N.Y., and Linda McCollumn of Avoca, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Joyce Holtz, and a brother James McCollumn.

A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at his church St. Raphael Parish Church in Kittery on Monday.
