Sedgley Miller

YORK – Sedgley Miller, 84, died unexpectedly on Feb. 19, 2005, after living with his daughter in Avon, Mass.

He was the son of John and Lois (Hatch) Miller and graduated from Sanford High School.

Survivors include one brother, John and Norma Miller of Ogunquit; two sisters, Nell Leary of Farmington, N.H., and Alice Burkett of Chula Vista, Calif.; one daughter, Constance Miller-Clinton of Avon, Mass.; three grandsons; and two great-granddaughters,

His favorite place was Cape Neddick Golf Course, where he was a starter for many years.

He was a veteran of World War II Army Air Corps.

He was predeceased by his wife Constance (Greenwood) Miller of Sanford, sons Ernest of Sanford, Richard of Chicago, Ill., Lois of North Carolina.

A funeral was held Wednesday at St. Michael’s Church, in Avon, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s research.

Theresa Noble

ACTON - Theresa Marie Noble, 76, of Sanborn Road, died Feb. 15, 2005 at her residence.

She was born in Westville, N.H. on Oct. 3, 1928, a daughter of Arthur and Cecilia (Demaris) Gaudette.

She attended local schools and worked in nursing care for most of her life. She had worked for Parkview Lodge in the Sanford area for many years.

She enjoyed baking and crocheting.

She married Keith Noble on Oct. 1, 1972.

She is predeceased by a daughter, Tina Moulton who died in January of 2005, and a brother, Joseph Gaudette.

Surviving are her husband, Keith of Acton; five sons, Bill Gonyer of Oregon, Leon Moulton and his wife, Vicki of West Charleston, Vt., Dwayne Moulton and his wife Joanne of Acton, Richard Moulton and his wife Terri Lynn of Acton and Keith Noble of Biddeford; four daughters, Rita Hunt and her husband Robert of Haverill, Mass., Sheila Palermo and her husband Peter of Epping, N.H., Diane Batchelder and her husband Daniel of Suffolk, Va., and Dawn Noble and her husband Jay of Kennebunk; one sister, Gloria Corson and her husband Ronald of Rochester, N.H.; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held in the spring.

Elizabeth O’Brien

KITTERY - Elizabeth R. “Betty” O’Brien, 79, of Badgers Island , died on Feb. 18, 2005 at York Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Mossblown, Scotland on Nov. 21, 1925, she was a daughter of Adam D. and Mary L, (Robertson) Neville. She attended schools in Annbank, Scotland.

In 1945, during the war, she met and on Oct. 4, at St. Quivox in Prestwick, Scotland, married her loving husband of nearly 60 years, Elmer M. O’Brien. She came with her husband to this country and together they settled and raised their family in Kittery.

She enjoyed many years of membership as an avid golfer at the York Golf and Tennis Club in York, she was a long time member of the “Lame Ducks” bowling league in Portsmouth and enjoyed the friendships she made over the years playing both sports. She was an outstanding knitter; the handy work she has made over the years will remain cherished gifts to many. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, together with her son David, an avid New York Yankees fan, enjoyed many spirited discussions about the rivalry over the years. For many years she and her husband enjoyed time spent at Heartland Resort in Haines City, Fla.

Her first love was undoubtedly her family, a loving wife and fiercely protective mother, provided for a loving and supportive home for her children and later her adored grand and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Elmer M. O’Brien; one daughter, Maureen E. and her husband William Saddler of Boca Raton, Fla. and their children, Heather, Brenna, Adam and Evan; one son, David O’Brien of Kittery Point, and his children, Nicholas and Carley O’Brien; two beloved great-grandchildren, Sam and Will; one sister, May Greer of Ayer, Scotland; two brothers, Adam Neville of Dundee, Scotland and David Neville of Ayr, Scotland; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother William (Willie) Neville.

A memorial service was celebrated on Wednesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Her family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to the Friend Raising for Skilled Nursing, C/O York Hospital, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Clara Russell

BERWICK - Clara Russell, 85, of Berwick died Feb. 16, 2005 at Frisbee Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Dover-Foxcroft on Dec. 3, 1919, a daughter of Talmadge and Abbie (Dickey) Crabtree.

She graduated from Dover-Foxcroft High School and was a homemaker all of her life.

She is predeceased by her husband, Albert E. Russell, Sr. who died in 1993. She is also predeceased by a son, Warren Russell; three brothers, Edmond Crabtree, John Crabtree and Vinal Crabtree; two sisters, Ellen Card and Anna Crabtree.

Surviving are two sons, Albert E. Russell Jr. and his wife Monique of Lewiston, and David N. Russell and his wife Patricia of Berwick; two daughters, Barbara Straffin and her husband Larry of North Berwick, and Hilda Davis and her husband Willis Sr. of Rochester, N.H.; one brother, Charles Perry Crabtree of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Etta Moran of Frankfort, Maine; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, Friday with Rev. Mark Rideout officiating. Burial was at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.

Arrangements are by Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, Berwick.

Avonia Readio

BERWICK - Avonia A. Readio, 90, of Long Swamp Road, died Monday, March 7, 2005 at Dover Rehabilitation in Dover, N.H.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1915 in Framingham, Mass., a daughter of Walter M. and Margaret A. (Lyons) Williams.

She enjoyed camping, knitting and crocheting.

She is predeceased by her husband of 68 years Ellis E. Readio.

She is survived by four sons, Earl W. Readio of Aurora, Colo., Stuart R Readio of Berwick, Philip B. Readio of Berwick, and Douglas Readio and his wife Beth of Lebanon, Maine; three sisters, Margery Coldwell of Millis, Mass., Jean Gibson of Framingham, Mass., and Eleanor McCall of Salem, Ore.; one brother, Robert Williams of Framingham, Mass.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial gathering will be held Friday from 1-7 p.m. at the home of Stuart R. Readio, 75 Long Swamp Rd., Berwick, ME 03901.

Helen Stableford

KENNEBUNK - Helen (Keller) Stableford died peacefully on March 4, 2005 after a brief illness. She was born on Sept. 5, 1917 in Meriden Conn.

She was the widow of Frank E. Stableford, also of Meriden, Conn., and the loving and loved mother of four children, Sue, William, Ernest, and Christina; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Tyler, Brook, and Abigail; and the great-grandmother of Zachery and Claire Helen.

She taught school for many years, first in her hometown of Meriden and later in Bethany, Conn. After retirement, she moved to Kennebunk to be close to family. She especially loved walking Kennebunk and Parsons Beach, docenting at the Portland Museum of Art, gardening, and traveling to Florence, Italy.

A memorial service to celebrate her life is planned for Saturday April 23 at noon at the Kennebunk Unitarian Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Caring Unlimited, 257 Main St., Sanford, ME 04073; or the Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St., Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Gregory Johnson

WELLS - Gregory S. Johnson, 55, of Blackberry Lane, died March 4, 2005 at his residence.

He was born in Tuscon, Ariz. on Feb. 28, 1950, the son of Warren A. and Martha (King) Johnson.

He graduated from Arizona State University and served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. He was assigned as an Intelligence Officer and retired in 1992 as a major.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, was a clown with the Shrine and also assisted with several local community fund-raising efforts.

He is survived by his son, Christopher Johnson of North Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Gail Lynn Wright of Niceville, Fla.; and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3p.m. today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells. Burial will be at Arlington National cemetery at a later date.

Carol Riley

OGUNQUIT - Carol K. Riley, 90, of Ogunquit, Maine, and Hot Springs, Ark., and died at Hot Springs on Feb. 18, 2005.

Born on Dec. 25, 1914 in Claremont, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Dorcas (Campbell) Kiniry and Ralph Wiley Kiniry. Her education included Colby Sawyer College in New London, N.H., Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia, Ark., and the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Ark.

After meeting at the World’s Fair in New York, she married Henry D. Riley in Claremont, N.H. She and Henry lived in Coronado, Calif. while Henry served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She worked as a sales associate at I. Magnin. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, she and Henry lived in Cambridge, Mass., Asbury Park, N.J., Richmond, Va., and Manette, Ore. before settling in Hot Springs in 1949. Her husband worked for Reynolds Aluminum and she began her career as a serious artist. She became one of Hot Springs Art Center’s Charter members and was active in promoting arts in that community. She also was a member and frequent exhibitor at the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit.

Until recently, she maintained studios in Ogunquit and in Hot Springs. Her distinguished career as an artist was influenced by her extensive travel to other countries, including New Zealand, Thailand, Tahiti, Australia, Greece and England.

In 1964, she was awarded the John F. Kennedy Top Award of the National Association of Painters in Casein. She accepted that award in New York City. Her work is housed in many public and private collections, most notably the Winthrop Rockefeller Collection, Minnesota Mining and numerous banks. Her work has been shown at numerous galleries throughout the United States. She has won more than 20 cash awards and purchase prizes and has held 18 one-man shows. Her professional memberships include the American Watercolor Society, National Association of Painters in Casein, National Association of Women Artists, California Watercolor Society and Who’s Who in American Women.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry D. Riley.

She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Kiniry Thomas of Damariscotta; two nieces, Carol T. Burrall of Bremen, Maine and Jennifer T. Read of Bozeman, Mont.; one nephew, William C. Thomas of Portland; four grandnieces, Wiley B. Macleod, Jennifer M. Burrall, Kristen A. Read, and Michaela R. Thomas; and one grandnephew, Zackery R. Thomas.

A memorial service was held at the Hot Springs Funeral Home Feb. 25.

Adelaide Cormier

BEVERLY, Mass. - Adelaide L. “Lally” “Ad” (Henken) Cormier, 84, died Feb. 20, 2005 at her home following a long illness. She was the wife of Vernon Cormier, with whom she shared 66 years of marriage.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of George and Emily (Miller) Henken.

She was a graduate of Salem schools.

In her younger years, she was employed by Webber’s Department Store, Jordan Marsh and Sewtelle’s Stationery Supply.

Over the years she, affectionately known as “Lally” or “Ad” to her friends and family, co-hosted, with her husband Vernon, many jam sessions with great music and great food for many very talented musicians on the North Shore. She loved to cook, garden, entertain, read and decorate her home, but her greatest love was caring for her family.

She is survived by her children, Dianne Belisle, Carmen Madore and her husband, Ronald, Vernon Cormier Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, all of Beverly and Kenneth Cormier and his wife, Eleanor of York; one brother, Richard Henken of Beverly; nine grandchildren, John, Dale and Dana Acciavatti, Ross and Stephen Madore, Teresa Bussiere and Lauren, Elise and Scott Cormier; two step-grandchildren, Corey and Chris Walker; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late George, Emily and Mildred Henken, Mary Newton, Lucille Childs, Dorothea Brown, Georgiana Doherty and Priscilla White.

A memorial service celebrating her life was held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Beverly on Feb. 26.

Joseph Detullio

WELLS - Joseph V. Detullio, 87, a longtime resident of Wells, died March 4, 2005 at Sentry Hill in York.

He was born in Derby, Conn. on Aug. 19, 1917, a son of Louis and Louise (Derosa) Detullio and attended Derby schools.

He served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines and in New Zealand where he elected to stay for an additional year, and was a Purple Heart recipient.

He was a self-employed building contractor, and was also a licensed plumber and electrician. He built the first drive-in theater in Derby and traveled all over New England doing building construction.

He moved his family to Wells in the 1960s and continued his building contractor business. Among his many accomplishments, he was most proud of his construction of St. Mary’s Church and St. Joseph’s Church in Saco. He helped build Oak Hill Plaza in Scarborough and the Red Coach Inn in Portland, which is now Verrillo’s, and bought Camp Wells By The Sea and turned it into a housing development.

He also served many years as code enforcement officer for Kennebunkport, was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, and a member of the Wells Lions Club, and the Wells Grange. He enjoyed the outdoors, sports, cooking, and living by the ocean.

He married Anne R. Savoy in 1946. They enjoyed dancing, especially the jitterbug and he became known as “Shakey.” Anne died in 1996.

He had spent the last two years at Sentry Hill and had received many awards while there.

He was recently going to be honored and recognized by the governor of Maine, and was to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

His family is very proud of his accomplishments and he was loved by all who knew him.

He is predeceased by two brothers, Patrick and Larry; a grandson, Joseph P. Detullio, and a great grandson, Nathan Patrick Cahoon.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph of Wells, and Arthur of Eliot; one daughter, Joanne Chadbourne and son-in-law John of Wells; one brother, William of Derby, Conn.; five grandchildren; and seven-great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at St. Mary’s Church, Wells. Burial will be at Ocean View cemetery in the spring.
