Maria Lasher

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Maria Lasher, 80, of Cass Street, died on Feb. 21, 2005 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness. She left us peacefully and began her journey to her heavenly home.

Born on Jan. 26, 1925, in Anno Viannos, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, beloved daughter of Xanthippi and Aristothame Nerantzakis and beloved sister to Eleni, Galati, Nikitas, Chrisoula and Katerina, she began her full life.

As a teenager during the occupation of Greece, first by the Italians then later during World War II by the German forces, she was quite brave and adventurous. Facing many hardships and the conditions that are usually present during war times, many times she would venture through fields of mines just so she could pick various greens so that her family could have food to eat and many times her spunkiness and wit got her out of tight spots with the enemy soldiers that she encountered.

Her bravery, strength and colorful personality were constant throughout her whole life. After marrying she gave birth to five children; Rena, Manoli, Xanthoula, Basili, and finally her baby Robert Jr. Her first two sons died in infancy, which was a heartbreak that stayed with her until the end.

In 1962 after remarrying, she and her husband Robert Lasher Sr. and their family came to the United States and settled in the Kittery, Maine / Portsmouth, N.H. area, where Robert served in the USAF. It was quite a change for her and not a completely happy one since leaving her beloved family and homeland was a heartbreak she always felt.

She bore it well and bravely faced all that life brought her way, especially whereas by doing so she was providing her children with a good life and anyone that knew her, knew that there was nothing more precious to her than her children.

Through the years she also helped raise, just as if they were her own, her grandchildren - Teddy, Maria, Elizabeth, Robert Abrams Jr., Rena Bold, Mikyla and Robert Lasher III.

She was also blessed with a great-granddaughter Zoe, which filled her with joy. All her grandchildren were blessed from knowing her, feeling her love and learning much of her wisdom, which she shared with them all. They all brought her indescribable joy and were always in her thoughts.

Through her life she also worked hard outside of her home always willing to carry more than her share of life’s responsibilities. In the ‘80s she and her husband and son Robert had a pub, Chuggers, in the Concord, N.H. area. Everyone knew Ma and Pa Chuggers, of course the backbone was Ma who ran the pub with a lot of love, a baseball bat, and the best of food. Another one of her qualities was that she was a super cook, from her chili, lasagna, pizzas, and of course her mouth-watering salads and french fries that her grandchildren always demanded.

Through her life, she touched so many who will never forget her, had friends too numerous to count who will miss her dearly and have been there for her, like her oldest friends Luz (Rod) Rodriquez, and George and Sharon Strangas, and so many, many more.

So finally, through many prayers, God has taken His daughter Maria to her heavenly home where her beloved mother, husband and two sons and all her loved family members and friends, who have gone before her are waiting to welcome her to her final home where she can have a new life with them and the Lord, one full of happiness and peace where pain and suffering have no place to dwell.

As for all of us, we now have an extra special angel that will be watching over us and waiting to welcome us, the ones who have already been so enriched by her.

She is survived by her son Robert Jr. and wife Debra and beautiful grandchildren Mikyla and Robert. Her daughter Rena and her husband Mike and their children and their mates Ted and Karen, Maria and Bill, great granddaughters Zoe and Elizabeth. Her daughter Centula and her mate John and her children Robert Abrams Jr. and Rena and husband Mike Bold. Her sisters and brother, numerous nieces and nephews in Greece. Also her sister Chrisoula and husband Tony Tzortzakis of Portsmouth and their children Fotini and Jesse, and great nephews Kevin, Angelo and Heather, Tyrel and Anthony, who were all so supportive and kind to her and the family and the little one who brought her so much joy. We rejoice for you dear mama, but we shall miss you terribly and we pray that you finally rest safely and in peace in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A funeral will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, N.H.. Visiting will be on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery.
