Evelyn Wentworth

WELLS - Evelyn H. Wentworth, 94, formerly of Heather Lane, died April 3, 2005 at Sentry Hill at York Harbor. She was born in Mexico, Maine on Oct. 27, 1910, the daughter of Forrest C. and Gemma (Richardson) Hunt.

She graduated from Mexico High School and attended Gorham Normal School.

She was affiliated with her husband, Robert P. Wentworth, in the operation of the Narragansett Hotel at Kennebunk Beach until 1959. In the fall of that year, they moved to Wells where they bought the property on Route 1 known as The Sea Gull Motor Inn. After selling this business in 1973, she again joined her husband in the operation of Brookside Garden Center on the Sanford Road at Wells Corner, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of the First Parish Unitarian Church of Kennebunk, and was active in its various organizations.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, who died in 2002.

She is survived by one daughter, Annette M. Wentworth of Kennebunk; one foster daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Sheila) Breary of Cape Porpoise; and several nieces and nephews.

There are no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday May 6 at Ocean View cemetery in Wells.

If desired, donations can be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells.

Lewis Holden

ELIOT - Lewis H. Holden, 80, passed away Jan. 19, 2005 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a period of failing health.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H. on Sept. 18, 1924, the son of Mabel and Henry Holden. He was brought up in Bath and attended schools there. He moved to Eliot with his wife, Rita, in the mid 1950s.

He was a machinist for more than 25 years at Kidder Press in Dover, N.H. before retiring. He also owned and operated a wooden shingle mill for many years.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army and stationed in Germany. He was highly decorated.

He was a member of Masons Naval Lodge 184, Kittery, Eastern Star, Kittery, The Veterans of Foreign War, the American Legion, South Berwick Rod & Gun Club, and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by one daughter, Abigail (Gail) and her husband Warren DeWildt; two grandsons, Kevin and his wife Alyson DeWildt of Brewer, and Jason DeWildt of Gilmanton, N.H.

He was predeceased by his brothers Roger S. and Clayton.

A funeral was held on Saturday at The J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery. Rev. David Avery, pastor of The First Congregational Church of Eliot officiated.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to The American Heart Association, Northeast Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham MA 01701.

Shirley Aumand

KENNEBUNK - Shirley P. Aumand, 68, a resident of Kennebunk, died at her home Jan. 19, 2005 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous 17-year battle with cancer.

She was the granddaughter of Polish immigrants and was born in Manchester, N.H. to the late Senator Norman A. Packard and his wife Estelle (Dziura) Packard. She graduated from Central High in 1954. After raising her family, she returned to school and received her BA from Notre Dame and her masters of liberal arts from Harvard University.

She was an avid reader with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. One of her greatest loves was teaching. She inspired numerous young students at several colleges in both Maine and New Hampshire. She specialized in the fields of world history, international relations and Latin American studies. Another of her great loves was traveling. She and her husband visited all seven continents and more than 160 countries throughout their lives together.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Jerry; four daughters, Atty. Darla of New York City, Natalie Ahern of Hingham, Mass., Larissa of San Diego, Calif. and Alicia Pantaleo of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. She was also the beloved “Nana” of five grandchildren, Patrick, Katie, Molly and Rory Ahern, and Hayden Pantaleo who was born in December.

She is predeceased by two brothers; Norman and Randall Packard and survived by two sisters, Melody Wood of Brownsville, N.J. and Verdy Michaud of Bedford, N.H.; one brother, Sherman Packard of Londonderry, N.H.; plus several nieces and nephews.

Shea will be remembered by friends and family as a woman of strong convictions and outstanding charisma. Her warmth, energy, humor and determination were captivating. She was known for her feisty determination and willingness to speak out about injustice regardless of the situation or the consequences. She touched many lives through her strength of character, kind heart and generous nature and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Gail Boston

KENNEBUNK - Gail V. Boston Jr., 71, of Cherrywood Lane, died Jan. 24, 2005 at Southern Maine Medical Center following a long illness. He was born July 11, 1933 in Biddeford, the son of Gail and Florence (Willis) Boston Sr.. He graduated from North Yarmouth Academy.

He served with the U.S. Army Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict.

On March 26, 1967, he married Elizabeth Hilton at the Kennebunk Baptist Church.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, for 25 years, retiring in 1998.

He was a member of The Advent Christian Church in Kennebunk. He enjoyed gardening and carpentry; he made and donated items to the Mothers’ Club at Kennebunk Lower Village to be sold at their fairs..

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Boston of Kennebunk; one daughter, Mrs. Darlene Severance of Kennebunk; two grandchildren, Todd Severance of Biddeford and Melissa Severance of Kennebunk; several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visiting hours.

Funeral services will be private, at a later date.

Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Helene Summers

KENNEBUNK - Helene (Kerr) Summers, 97, formerly of Huntington Common and Bridgeport, Conn., died Jan. 18, 2005 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Schenectady, N.Y. on Oct. 2, 1907, the daughter of Thomas W. and Bessie (Barrie) Kerr. She graduated from Schenectady, N.Y. High School and Meredith College in North Carolina.

She was a homemaker all of her life and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Schenectady, and former PTA President and PTA Council President in Bridgeport, Conn.

Her Husband, Lt. Col. J.L. Summers, died in 1997.

She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Jaylene Kerr Summers of Arundel; and two grandchildren, Shaw David Tilton of Lyman, and Nathaniel Jay Tilton of Charlestown, Mass.

At the request of the family, there will be no services.

Donations can be made in her memory to the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk, PO Box 235, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Joseph Bielawski

BERWICK - Joseph T. Bielawski, 58, of Lebanon, died Jan. 18, 2005 at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass.

He was born June 30, 1946 in Schwabisch, Germany, the son of Michael and Marie (Putowa) Bielawski. After moving to Belgium, it was best for them and Joseph to move to America to Norwich, Conn. where his mother still resides in the house she, her husband and Joseph fixed up.

He attended Norwich Free Academy from where he graduated in 1965 and he then served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968.

Later, he started working for Malden Mills as a supervisor. It was there he met his wife, Pamela Harpole. They married on July 4, 1981.

He enjoyed gardening and computers.

He is predeceased by his father who died in 2000.

Surviving are his wife of Lebanon; his mother of Norwich, Conn.; and his daughter, Katie Bielawski of Waltham, Mass.

There will be private family services only.

Arrangements are by Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick.

Theresa Cerabona

ELIOT - Theresa Ann “Teri” Cerabona, 37, of Eliot, died on Jan. 21, 2005 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H. on May 14, 1967, she was the daughter of Dominick H. and Janice A. (Hood) Cerabona. She attended local schools, graduating from Marshwood High School with the class of 1985. During her high school career she was an active member of the Marching Band Color Guard, the Concert and Jazz Bands and National Honor Society. She continued her education majoring in business administration at the University of Maine in Orono, where she was also a member of Delta Zeta Sorority.

She enjoyed many arts and crafts, making her early career, traveling around the country, setting up arts and crafts departments for Ames Department Stores all the more rewarding.

She later enjoyed a career in banking, which took her from Maine to Tulsa, Okla. and Dallas Ft. Worth, Texas, before returning here to settle back in Eliot.

Her compassion, and kindness were evident as a wonderful daughter, sister and as an aunt, which she particularly enjoyed. The time she spent with her many nieces and nephews were some of her most enjoyable.

Throughout her six-year illness she continued to exhibit compassion and kindness coupled with a tremendous display of courage, strength and hope. Her final act of compassion was to offer hope to many others through organ donation. She was thankful for the support she received from so many, including the staff and physicians at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Her first love was undoubtedly her supportive and loving family, who will miss her dearly. They include her parents Janice A (Hood) Cerabona of Eliot, and her father Dominick H. Cerabona of Eliot; her twin sister, Susan and her husband Larry Peterson of Etna, Maine; one brother, Marc and his wife Kristen of Kennebunk; one cousin, John Alexander of York; and her many nieces and nephews

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Wednesday at St. Raphael Parish Church in Kittery, with Rev. Fr. Frederick Sweeney officiating.

In lieu of flowers her family requests donations be made in her memory to the New England Organ Bank, 1 Gateway Center, Suite 202, Newton, MA 02458 or to Seacoast Dialysis, 195 Commerce Way, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Kenneth Whitaker

OCEAN PARK – Kenneth V. Whitaker, 85, of Ocean Park, died Jan. 16, 2005 at the Veteran’s Hospital at Togus.

He was born in Berwick on July 15, 1919, a son of Walter Leland and Lena Aliceson (Fall) Whitaker.

He attended Berwick schools and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked as a coverer and insulator in Shop 56 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired from there in 1978 after 33 years.

He married Elizabeth M. (Walker) Whitaker on July 7, 1979.

He was a lifetime member of the DAV and enjoyed singing. In his earlier years, he also enjoyed hunting.

He attended the Faith Light Church in Old Orchard.

He is predeceased by a son, Lawrence G. DeWitt of North Berwick in 2000; three brothers, Raymond Whitaker of Berwick, Wilbur Whitaker of Eliot, and Roland Whitaker of Portsmouth, N.H.; and a sister, Marion Andrews of Eliot.

Surviving are his wife of Ocean Park; two daughters, Mary Fuller of South Berwick, and Elizabeth Brunette of Rollinsford, N.H.; two sons, Fred Whitaker of Winthrop and Maurice R. DeWitt of Jersey City, N.J.; one brother, Elsworth Whitaker of Massachusetts; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, Berwick, with Rev. E. Terry Courtney officiating.

Donations can be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.

Carlita Smith

KENNEBUNK - Carlita M. Smith, 68, a resident of Haley’s Wood’s, Kennebunk died Jan. 24, 2005 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kennebunk.

She was born in Waterboro on April 8, 1936, a daughter of Malcolm Cooney and Alice Luella (Huff) Smith. She attended Waterboro schools and graduated from Sanford High School in Sanford. She continued her education at Gordon College in Boston, Mass. and Wycliffe College in the Mid-west. She received her master’s degree at the University of Maine in Orono.

She served as a missionary teacher to the children of missionaries in Cuba, Bolivia, Peru, Equador and Mexico for more than 25 years. She was serving in Cuba at the time of the Cuban evacuation. Following her missionary work she became employed with the Portland School Department in Portland, and served in the Language Department for several years.

She was a concert pianist and also an ordained minister.

She is survived by two brothers, Carlton M. Smith and his wife Delores of Groton, Conn. and Robert A. Smith of Waterboro; one sister, Kathy M. Ackerman; several nieces and nephews; and great-grand nephews and nieces.

Friends may call at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, Friday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at the chapel with the Rev. James King of the Kennebunk Baptist Church officiating the service. Spring Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterboro.
