Alma Leavitt

OGUNQUIT - Alma Elizabeth (Deam) Leavitt was born in her parents’ house near Wade Park in Cleveland, Ohio. She lived most of her adult life in Cleveland Heights where she raised her family and pursued her many interests and volunteer activities. She returned to the Wade Park area in 1999 to live at Judson Manor. She was the widow of Luther Cass Leavitt Jr. who died in 2001.

She graduated from Shaw High School in 1930. She received a B.A. in Political Science from Flora Stone Mather College, Case Western Reserve University, in 1935. Her college career was interrupted by a one-year stay at a sanitarium in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, where she was treated for tuberculosis.

After college, she went to work at the East Cleveland Public Library. Thereafter, she held a succession of administrative positions at places such as Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland and the Talon Zipper Company in Meadville, Pa. In spite of the impressive job titles she was given, the jobs required no more than typing skills. Concluding she needed more challenge, she took a civil service test and in 1939 she was hired by the Social Security Administration as one of its first female field managers, based in Erie, Pa. The job required her to drive from town to town in eastern Pennsylvania to enroll persons in the new program called social security, which she did from a table set up in the lobby of courthouses and post offices. She held this position until her marriage to Lieutenant Leavitt on Nov. 22, 1941. She moved constantly thereafter, depending on where her husband was assigned by the U.S. Navy. After her husband went to sea, she returned to Cleveland with her daughter, Jean, to live with her parents until the end of the war.

In 1948, she and Luther made Cleveland Heights their home. They raised four children there and attended Hope Lutheran Church, which was founded by her parents in order that her father could attend services in English, not German. She was involved in numerous activities and organizations. She worked every primary and Election Day at the neighborhood-polling place, volunteered for PTA at Noble School and Monticello Junior High, and was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She drove cancer patients to their chemotherapy appointments, served on the Board of the Florence Crittendon Society and was elected president of the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Organization in 1970.

She was a member, until she died, of the Western Reserve Herb Society, the Lecture Recital Club, Ikebana International, the Cleveland Garden Club, the Moses Cleaveland Chapter of the DAR and the College Club of Cleveland. She was accomplished at numerous crafts: loom weaving, sewing, needlepoint, knitting and hooking. She and Luther were regulars at the Cleveland Playhouse and the Cleveland Orchestra. They were in a duplicate bridge club for more than 25 years and enjoyed curling at the Cleveland Skating Club. For many years they were members of the Saturday Night Dance Club.

In 1964, she began spending her summers in Ogunquit, where she and Luther built a summer home. She went there every summer thereafter. In Ogunquit, she was active in the altar guild at her summer church, St. Peter’s By-the-Sea, a bridge club and a croquet club.

She will be buried in Ocean View cemetery in Wells, with her husband and deceased son, Richard.

She is survived by one brother, Dr. William L. Deam of Miami, Fla.; three daughters, Jean Gendron of Philadelphia, Hannah Leavitt of Harrisburg, and Anne Leavitt of Seattle, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Her first love was unquestionably her family; she loved time spent with her grandchildren, all of whom lived close to her while they were growing up and were able to spend a lot of enjoyable time with their grandmother and many nights at her home, enjoying time spent in the kitchen learning to cook and bake and just being with her.

Most recently she moved from her home in Kittery to the Atria of Kennebunk where she quickly began to enjoy the activities offered and the new people she met.
