William Fernald

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - William David “Bill” Fernald, 88 of Portsmouth, died on Jan. 28, 2005 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford following a period of failing health.

Born in Kittery Point, he was the son of Everett and Dorothy Louise (Waldron) Fernald. He attended Kittery schools graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1933.

As a teenager he moved with his mother to Portsmouth, where he remained in the family home. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Corps in World War II.

He enjoyed people, managing the Federal Cigar Shop in downtown Portsmouth he was able to meet and enjoy many customers everyday. He also managed the State Liquor Store for more than 20 years.

Upon retirement he enjoyed the seacoast beaches, gardening in his yard, particularly enjoying his flowers and flowering shrubs. He was an avid reader, cook and enjoyed fishing. He also enjoyed traveling; his trips took him to Alaska, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Nova Scotia, Atlantic City and many other enjoyable destinations.

He is survived by three cousins, Annie Currier of South Berwick, Jessie Kalix of Kittery Point, and Frances Roberts of Gorham, a number of second, third and forth cousins.

A funeral was held on Friday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

George Jutras

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – George O. Jutras, a resident of Hollywood, Fla., formerly of South Berwick and Wells Beach, Maine, passed away on Dec. 26, 2004. He was born on June 18, 1911 to Canadian parents in Quebec and was the youngest of 10 children.

As a youth, he moved to South Berwick where he met his future wife Irene Lavigne. He attended Berwick Academy from 1925-1929. While at the academy, he starred in football, baseball, and basketball. In a history of Berwick Academy, published in Berwick Academy Today, in 1991 he was quoted as saying, “Boy, I loved basketball. We had a really good team my junior year. We only lost two games. One to Portsmouth High, the other to South Portland, who were the state champions of the state of Maine, and Portsmouth High who were the New Hampshire state champions. They both ended up going to Chicago for the national tournament. The only two losses that year.”

His love of sports spawned a long career as an umpire and referee in the Maine / New Hampshire area. The only reason he didn’t turn pro by attending school in Florida, is the need to support his family.

He was dedicated to Berwick Academy. He served as president of the Alumni Association from 1940-1945. He was appointed to the board of trustees in June of 1952. He served for more than 20 years, after which he attained Trustee Emeritus. He was secretary / treasurer of the Alumni Association from 1970-1973. In 1982 he received the Alumni Distinguished Service Award. He and his wife never missed an Alumni Day or banquet until 2000, when they moved to Florida. No banquet was complete without George leading the school song.

Berwick Academy’s first schoolhouse was built in the summer of 1791. In 1830 it was sold and moved to the town of South Berwick. In 1964, the academy repurchased the building and on Jan. 18, 1966 the original schoolhouse was returned to the campus. In later years it was dedicated to him.

He was charter member of the South Berwick Rotary Club and served as president, as well as an active communicant of St. Michael’s Parish. He was active in the church affairs and a mainstay in the church choir.

He served as trustee of Maine National Bank for many years while operating a gas station in South Berwick. He eventually expanded the station to include a heating oil business. After selling his business interests he joined the Maine Turnpike Authority until retirement.

In 1950, he and his wife bought an oceanfront cottage on Wells Beach, as a summer home, but eventually lived there year round until moving to Florida to join their three sons and daughter-in-law, who all reside there.

His wife Irene passed away on July 21, 2003 after 67 years of marriage. They shared a love for South Berwick, the Academy and Wells Beach.

When it became difficult, he and his wife moved to an assisted living facility in Hollywood, Fla. and were able to spend time with their three sons and daughter-in-law for the first time in many years. Unfortunately, this time together was much too short. Time with parents should never be wasted in the later years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Irene; his three sons, David Jutras of Hollywood, Fla., Paul and his wife Ann of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Richard Jutras of Bradenton, Fla.; four grandchildren, Robin Rivet, David J. Jutras, Paul Jutras and Jason Jutras; and three great-grandchildren, Robbie and Timberly Rivet, and Cara Jutras. He was also extremely close to his sister-in-law, Yvonne Cheney and husband Raymond and sister-in-law, Viola Chagnon and her children.

He was loved by everyone he came in contact with. There were many cold winter days when an oil customer could not afford the needed heating oil for the house. He always made sure the family was helped. His customers were his friends and they always came first. He will be missed by all that knew him. The world is a better place because he walked upon it.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at Wells Beach.
