Arthur Seippel

KENNEBUNK – Arthur B. Seippel, 78, of Doane’s Wharf Road, died May 3, 2005 at his residence.

He was born in Baltimore, Md. on Oct. 12, 1926, the son of John H. and Alice (Kaercher) Seippel II.

The fourth of five children, he lived in Baltimore until the age of 5, when his family moved to Evanston, Ill. He attended summer school in Culver, Ind. and graduated from Short Ridge High School also in Indiana.

He later graduated from the University of Baltimore.

He was a draftsman for a time and for several years, he worked for the United States Department of Labor. He medically retired from there in the 1970s after returning from Vietnam serving in that capacity.

He met his wife, Marjorie Hotchkiss in Evanston, Ill. and they married in 1950. They moved to Baltimore, Md. for 13 years where he worked with Martins Aircraft. He and Marjorie then moved to Virginia where he volunteered with 4-H in Clifton and Winchester, Va. In 1984, they moved to Maine.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Masonic Lodge 113 AF&AM in Baltimore, Md. and the West Kennebunk Lodge of Masons, the York Rite, and the Boumi Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Embroiders’ Guild of America where he was the first male Certified Judge in Needlework, and helped to found the organization in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas. He was also a member of the Southern Maine Embroiders’ Guild of America.

He was predeceased by a son, Bruce Conrad Seippel who died in 1993; a brother, John Herman Seippel III; and two sisters, Mary Shapiro and Alma L. Coon.

Surviving are his wife, Marjorie of Kennebunk; one son, William H. and his wife Shari of Roswell, Ga. and Kennebunk; one daughter, Aliceann (Margaret) Mason, and her husband, Richard of Seaside, Ore.; one sister, Mrs. Richard (Eliza) Solon of Redman, Ore.; and eight grandchildren, Nicholas A. Whitford Mason, Margaret E. Mason, Geoffrey A. Mason, John Edward Seippel, Jacob Seippel, Catherine Seippel, Sarah Seippel, and Rebecca Seippel.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Christ Church, Kennebunk. Burial was at Loudon Park cemetery in Baltimore, Md.

If desired, donations can be made in his memory to the Christ Church, 12 Dane St., Kennebunk, ME 04043 or to the Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.

Richard Hastings

KENNET SQUARE, Pa. – Richard W. Hastings, 77, of Kennett Square, Pa., formerly of Kennebunkport, passed away on May 4, 2005 after a brief illness at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, Pa.

He was the husband of Lois W. Hastings, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage.

Born in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of the late Rowland J. and Eunice (Leach) Hastings. He graduated from Exeter Academy, served 18 months overseas with the U.S. Army and graduated from Williams College in 1951.

He was an executive with Smith Kline & French in Philadelphia from 1951 to 1969. The family then moved to New Jersey where he was director of Government Affairs for Ciba Geigy. After retiring from Ciba in 1978, he followed

his dream and opened his own business in Kennebunkport. Dick and Lois’ store, The Yellow House, included handcrafted items some of which were made by he himself, incorporating his hobby of furniture making. While in Maine, he served with the Literacy Volunteers of America and was an active member of the Kennebunk River Club.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, sailing and birding. He was an avid tennis player, a passion he passed along to his children and grandchildren. He also had a strong love of animals and nature and enjoyed his daily walks with his dogs.

In 2001, he and his wife moved back to the Philadelphia area to be closer to family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one brother, Phillip Hastings of Williamstown, Mass.; one son, Peter Hastings (Donna) of Mendham, N.J.; three daughters, Jennifer H. Doherty (James) of West Chester, PA., Daryl Hastings (James Pitts) of Pittstown, N.J., and Sally W. Hastings of Roxbury, Conn.; and six grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Animal Welfare Society, Old Holland Road, West Kennebunk, ME 04043.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donald Parker

ELIOT – Donald Louis Parker, 81, of Governor Hill Road in Eliot died on May 3, 2005 at York Hospital.

Born in New Bedford, Mass. on March 23, 1924, he was a son of Francis A. and Aurie (Barstow) Parker. He was a graduate of Northeastern University with a degree in engineering.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Force. A decorated pilot, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service to his country.

He always wanted to fly even as a teenager. He used to sneak into Boston from his home in New Bedford, Mass. to take flying lessons at the old East Boston Airport.

Following his military service he was employed in Amesbury, Mass. at Cargo Care Engineering as an engineer. He was employed there for more than 30 years.

He lived in the seacoast for many years, enjoying homes in East Kingston and Exeter. He has made his home with his wife Linda in Eliot for 15 years.

He was an avid pilot and outdoors enthusiast, he loved sailing and enjoyed membership in the Little Harbor and Kittery Point Yacht Clubs, he enjoyed skiing especially with his family and possessed a wonderful sense of humor. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.

He will be missed by those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife Linda (Gould Thorpe) Parker of Eliot; one daughter, Dawn Gail Merrill of Nashua; three sons, Blake Parker of Boston, Mass., Donald Matheson and his wife Bea of Brentwood, N.H. and their children Abigail and Ian, and Scott Matheson and his wife Amy of Ossipee, N.H. and their daughter Hanson.

A memorial service was celebrated on Saturday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association or the New Hampshire SPCA, PO Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885-0196.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Nancy Heath

A memorial service for Nancy Heath of Kennebunk who passed away Dec. 3, 2004 will be held on her birthday, Friday May 13 at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church on Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport at 11 a.m.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy Ames and her husband Timothy of Kennebunk and grandsons T. Christian Ames and Nicholas Ames.

A reception will follow at the Nonantum Resort. All are welcome to attend. Father Dan Riggall of Saint David’s will officiate.

Mary Davis

YORK – Mary (McIntire) Davis, 88, a lifelong York resident died Dec. 7, 2004 at her home.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday May 20, in the First Parish Church in York. Burial will be private in the First Parish cemetery in York.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Land Trust, PO Box 1241, York Harbor, ME 03911.

Gary Moulton

YORK – Gary V. Moulton, 52, of Bullfrog Lane died April 21, 2005 at York Hospital.

He was born in Chelsea, Mass., son of Robert V. and Katherine (Gerry) Moulton. He was a 1972 graduate of York High School and graduated from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in 1974. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before starting his own business, G.V. Moulton Plumbing and Heating 20 years ago.

He was a very active member of the St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge in York and was the 1984 Worshipful Master of the Lodge. He was instrumental in starting the DeMolay Chapter for Boys in York and served as a Dad Advisor. He was a Shriner and DeMolay Master Councilor in the Kittery DeMolay Chapter. He also proudly served the community as a member of the York Fire Department.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife on many cruises and RV trips. They had a winter home in Chokoloskee, Fla. where he spent his days fishing and relaxing outdoors. Family was especially important to him, and he was very proud of his three grandchildren Hunter, Jillian, and Wyatt.

Equipped with a very strong work ethic and a love of helping others, he was always willing to jump in and lend a hand. He enjoyed hunting, reading, singing and playing his guitar, and he will always be remembered as a great storyteller.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Moulton of York; three daughters, Heather Bice and her husband Josh of Boca Raton, Fla., Amber

Kerly and her husband Steve of St. Augustine, Fla., and Brianna Moulton of York; two stepsons, Richard and Patrick Dennis of York; his parents, Robert and Katherine Moulton of York; one brother, Timothy

Moulton and his wife Gail of Amelia Island, Fla.; two sisters Wendy Mracek and her husband William of York, and Roxine Myshrall and her husband Robert of Kingfield, Maine; three grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of his life was held on Sunday in the First Parish Congregational Church, York St. York. A Masonic Service was held in the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boston Shriners Hospital, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.

Alice West

SANFORD – Alice C. West, 92, a resident of Mayflower Place, Sanford formerly of Kennebunk, died April 19, 2005. She was the widow of William G. West who died in 1988.

She was born in Dorcester, Mass. on Feb. 22, 1913, a daughter of Maurice and Sarah Howes Cousens.

She attended West Kennebunk schools.

She worked various of jobs such as the former Kesslen Shoe and the Hills News Agency both of Kennebunk. She was also an employee of General Electric Company in Somersworth, N.H. for more than 30 years.

She lovingly volunteered at the Old Timers Shop in Sanford and the Southern Maine Agency of Aging for more than 20 years.

She was a member and past matron of the Madonna Chapter of the Eastern Star of West Kennebunk.

She painted for a hobby and also took great pleasure in playing bingo.

She was predeceased by her brothers, George and Thomas Cousens and her sister, Marion Cousens.

She is survived by her two sons, Richard Bowley of Brookville, Fla., and Robert Dennett of Annapolis, Md.; one daughter, Nancy Bowley of Sanford; six grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

The Madonna Chapter 144 O.E.S. held a service on April 21. A private graveside service was held at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Memorial donations may be made to the Madonna Chapter 144, c/o Roma Pelletier, 53 Limerick Rd., Arundel, ME 04046 or Mayflower Place, 27 Mayflower Pl., Sanford, ME 04073, in her memory.

Gilles Thivierge

QUEBEC, Canada – Gillees Thivierge, 78, of Quebec, passed away April 22, 2005 at La maison Michel-Sarrazin in Quebec City following a lengthy illness.

He is survived by his two daughters, Josee Thivierge of Quebec and Myra Thivierge of Kennebunk; one granddaughter, Sasha Thivierge-Bonney and son-in-law Jeffrey Bonney, both of Kennebunk.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Monday in Quebec City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: La Foundation Maison Michel-sarrazin, 2101 Chemin Saint-Louis, Sillery, PQ, Canada G1T 1P5.

Gladys Clark

KITTERY – Gladys N. Clark, 95, of George Street, Kittery, died on April 18, 2005 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Detroit, ME on Nov. 20, 1909, a daughter of Henry Rockwell and Achsia (Basford) Nichols and attended local schools. She furthered her education at Farmington State Normal School and later earning her bachelor of science degree from Farmington State Teachers College.

She met and married her loving husband James Albert Clark who predeceased her in 1984.

A dedicated educator, she taught many students during her years of teaching. She taught school in all grades from 1929 until 1931 at the Town Farm School in Corinna, Maine, from 1931-1932 she taught in Newport, Maine at the Gilman School and she was employed for more than 24 years at the Horace Mitchell School in Kittery Point teaching the third grade from 1949 until her retirement in 1974.

Active in her community, she supported the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum, Friends of Rice Public Library, she served as the vice president of the Women’s Club and was a member of the York County Retired Teachers Association for many years, where she served as secretary for a time and on many committees including membership, personal growth and service, professional affairs, scholarship, research and served on the Iota Bulletin Committee.

She enjoyed gardening, reading and cooking as well as travel especially to Florida as well as collecting coins and rocks and minerals.

She is survived by one son, David and his wife Marcia Clark of Sabattus; four grandchildren, Tracy Gosslin and her husband Robert of Lisbon, Deborah Clark of Sabattus, Stephen and Michelle Murchie of Kensington, Md., and Michael Clark of Lisbon; four great-grandchildren, Lorra, Amanda, Justin and David; and one sister, Charlene Foster of Detroit, Maine.

Funeral services will be private at her family’s request. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to her church, to the Elevator Fund at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 60 Government St., Kittery, ME 03904.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Dr. James Beckerley II

KENNEBUNK – Dr. James G. Beckerley II of Huntington Common, Kennebunk died late evening April 18, 2005 at his residence.

He was born in Chicago, Ill., the son of James and Clara (Ungewitter) Beckerley.

He graduated cum laude from Stanford University in 1935 with a BA in physics and a minor in math. He was an instructor of physics at the University of Georgia and Judson College in Rangoon, Burma. He and his wife fled Burma with their infant son after continuous bombing by the Japanese. In 1945 he received his doctorate in physics from Stanford University.

From 1946 until 1949 he was employed with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission working as a director of Classification.

As a spokesman, he was involved in the Fushs and Rosenburg trial where atomic secrets were disclosed to the Soviets.

As Director of Classification, he analyzed information that the suspected spies had provided to the Soviets.

He explained that the information involved a transatlantic spy ring that lead to the Fushs being sentenced to 14 years and the trial of the Rosenburg’s.

Later an employee of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, he worked on projects involving the purification of graphite. This process eventually lead to the production of plutonium from uranium and ultimately developed into a $100 million project.

He also worked on the creation of hydrogen heavy water, which was used as a moderator in nuclear reactors.

From 1959 until 1962 he worked for the International Atomic Agency in Vienna, Austria as a physicist and senior scientific editor, a division of Scientific and Technical Information.

In 1972 he became the Senior Environmental Analyst, directorate of Licensing for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C.

He was associated with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, George Washington University, the Schlumberger Company and president of his own company Radioptics of Plainsview, N.Y. He also had many publications as editor of Annual Review of Nuclear Science and the American Nuclear Society. He is also listed in the Who’s Who for Columbia University.

He was predeceased by his wife and son John who died in an accident in Austria at the age of 10.

Survivors include one son, James Beckerley of Kennebunk; two granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

A family graveside service will be held at Mt. Auburn cemetery in Cambridge, Mass. at a later date.

Donations may be made in his name to Stanford University School of Humanitarian and Sciences, PO Box 20466, Stanford, CA 94305-2070.
