Beatrice Crimmins

KENNEBUNK – Beatrice Elizabeth (Sears) Crimmins, 88, a resident of Sanford, N.C. died April 16, 2005 at Pinelake Nursing Home in Carthage, N.C.

A native of Milford, Mass. her survivors are two daughters, Meredith A.C. Carlberg of Waxsaw, N.C. and Susan C. Spell of Sanford, N.C.; one son, Joseph (Jody) M. Crimmins of Lyman; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was a former resident of Kennebunk and enjoyed returning to Maine each summer.

Leslie Dorr

YORK – Leslie W. Dorr, 67, son of the late Burgess F. and Beatrice E. Dorr, won his battle with cancer and went to be with the Lord on April 13, 2005.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1937 in York. He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized on Oct. 24, 1950 at the age of 13. He graduated high school at Robert W. Traip Academy in Kittery. He enjoyed country music and played guitar and sang for many years. In later years he sang primarily gospel music in churches and presented a gospel program of music with his youngest daughter, Karen.

He was very active in the educational ministries of the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point. He also served on the deaconate board there and filled the pulpit as a lay preacher on many occasions.

He retired from the town of Kittery in 1997 after 38 years of service as superintendent of Waste Water Treatment. He was called to the ministry shortly after retirement and pastored the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh until December of 2003. He held weekly Bible Studies and began a Men’s Prayer Breakfast which met at a local restaurant. He also voluntarily provided worship services for a local nursing home during this time.

He loved his Lord, his church family and the close friends he made along life’s way. He was certainly thankful for his own family. He enjoyed his boat and his times at the lake with his grandchildren.

He leaves his beloved wife of 46 years, Beverly Dorr; one very close and loving sister, Marion Niles and her husband, Alden; three precious daughters, Sheryl Taylor and her husband Paul, Lori Johnston and her husband Terry, and Karen Twombly and her husband, Robin; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh.

In lieu of flowers, he desired that contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh, Maine at 600 Shapleigh Corner Rd. to further enhance the advancement of the Kingdom of God.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Carol Emery

YORK – Carol Elizabeth Emery, 91, of York, died on April 24, 2005 at the Harbor Home.

Born on June 5, 1913 in Hillsboro, N.H., she was the daughter of Arthur McNally and Phoebe B. Cram.

She graduated from Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro, N.H. and received her R.N. degree from Margaret Pillsbury School of Nursing in Concord, N.H.

She was the wife of Roger L. Emery Sr., who died in May of 1979. She and her husband lived in Kittery, for most of their married life. They thoroughly enjoyed many years of retirement during the winter months in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Much of her life was devoted to nursing at the Portsmouth Hospital, private care and nursing homes both in New Hampshire and Florida.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Rebekahs and Second Christian Church, Kittery.

She is survived by her two sons, G. Richard Emery and his wife Alice of Kittery Point, and David C. Emery and his wife Roni of York; one step-son Robert Emery of Florida; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one step-son, Roger L. Emery Jr. She will be sorely missed by her children, grandchildren and friends.

Funeral services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Harbor Home, in care of Kathy Vinet, 6 Norwood Farms Rd., York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Richard Groves

NASHUA, N.H. – Richard S. Groves, 59, of North Hampton, N.H., died April 22, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Nashua, N.H. on March 29, 1946, the son of John S. and Phyllis (Buxton) Groves and was a 1966 graduate of Nashua High School. He was also a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. He made Rye and Hampton his home for many years.

He worked as an automotive service manager for many dealers in the seacoast area.

He was predeceased by his father and his mother. He is survived by two sons, Sean Groves of Concord, N.H., and Derek Groves of Merrimack, N.H.; two brothers, John Groves and his wife Judi of York Beach, Steven Groves and his wife Kathy of York Beach; one sister, JoAnn Daniels and her husband Mark of Kittery; three grandchildren, Brandon Groves, Breanna Groves and Zachary Groves.

The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Bonnem and the nurses on the third floor Oncology Unit of Portsmouth Hospital for for their wonderful care.

Funeral services will be held privately.

Arrangements entrusted to The J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery.

Blanche Harrigan

KENNEBUNK – Blanche A. Harrigan, 101, died April 17, 2005 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in St. Bruno, Canada on March 1, 1904, a daughter of Arthur and Annabelle (Charbonneau) Robert.

She attended schools in New Haven, Conn., and was a self-employed seamstress, specializing in bridal gowns. She resided in Stanford, Conn. for many years and moved to Wells in 1971.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Wells and a member of its Sodality. She also enjoyed crochet, knitting, cooking, gardening, reading, and was a self-taught oil painter.

She is predeceased by her husband, John J. Harrigan, who died in 1971; four brothers; and four sisters.

Surviving is one son, Kevin J. Harrigan and his wife Theresa of Fairfield, Conn.; four grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday at St. Mary’s Church, Wells. Burial followed at Ocean View cemetery in Wells.

If desired, donations can be made in her memory to St. Mary’s Church, 236 Eldridge Rd., Wells, ME 04090, or to the Maine Right to Life Committee, 8 Green St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Neil Kelly

OGUNQUIT – Neil Roger Kelly, 53, of Ogunquit, died Feb. 8, 2005 at Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West, Fla.

He was born on March 1, 1951, and had been battling bladder cancer for several months.

He leaves his partner of nine years, Mark J. Fervidness.

He was predeceased by his father John Kelly.

He is survived by his mother, Marjorie Kelly; and his two sisters Linda and Sue Kelly.

Burial will be at the convenience of his family and a memorial will be held at St. Mary’s in Wells on Monday May 16 at 6 p.m. (reception to follow).

Irene Murray

SOUTH BERWICK – Irene M. Murray, 90, formerly of 89 Woodland Hills, South Berwick, died April 20, 2005 at the Harbor home in York.

She was born in Hartford, Conn. on April 19, 1915, the daughter of Harold and Mary Beidelman.

She met and married Thomas J. Murray Jr. and for many years they made their home and raised their family in East Lyme, Conn. She was a gifted folk artist who enjoyed painting, sewing, and knitting, with a special fondness for doll clothing. A tireless worker who was mother, wife and homemaker and at various times owned and operated her own curtain shop, she was employed as a medical secretary, and was a licensed real estate broker in New London County. In 1982 she moved to South Berwick, to be closer to her family. She enjoyed her new home and spent many enjoyable hours tending to her yard and small garden. She was employed as a secretary at the Kittery Recreation Department where she enjoyed meeting and working with people. Her first love was for her family.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jennifer Loomis of Greenwood, Maine, and Rebecca Ridley of Kittery; one son, Thomas and his wife Hope Murray of North Hampton, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Eleanor Beidelman of Niantic, Conn.

She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, and her daughter Pamela Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday at St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery. Burial followed at St. Ann’s cemetery in Avon, Conn.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery. Funeral services will be held privately.

Mathilde Hargan

KENNEBUNK – Mathilde “Til” M.F. Hargan, 92, a resident of Huntington Common, died on April 22, 2005.

She was born on June 20, 1912, in Bayonne, N.J., daughter of Emil Haas and Frida (Eberling) Haas. She was an active member of the Mistletoe Assembly 20 of the Rainbow Girls and a member of the Bayonne Chapter 21 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

On Oct. 2, 1932 she married Frederick Dobson Hargan and they were together for nearly 60 years until his death on Sept. 13, 1992.

A dedicated housewife and mother she held various offices in the Parent-Teacher Association of the schools in Rutherford, N.J. where they lived for more than 30 years.

She was active in various civic organizations including being one of the founding members of the Meadowlands Museum in Rutherford. During

World War II she was a block warden. Upon her husband’s retirement they moved to Falls Village, Conn. There she became a volunteer at Sharon Hospital. In 2000 she moved to Kennebunk where

she first resided at Portside and then moved to Huntington Common.

She is survived by one son, Louis Hargan of Cape Neddick; one daughter, Barbara Lowe of East Fallowfield, Pa.; one daughter-in-law, Mary Hargan of Redding, Conn.; and four granddaughters, Linda Bryant of Newcastle, Maine, Cynthia Van Winkle of Rutherford, N.J., Bajeerah LaCava of

Phoenixville, Pa., and Yasmeen Lowe of East Fallowfield, Pa.; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Rodger Hargan of Redding, Conn.

Memorial services and burial in Flushing cemetery in New York will be announced at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to your local library.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Dorothy Mathieu

SACO – Dorothy A. Mathieu, 92, a resident of Beach Street died the evening of April 19, 2005 at her home following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Biddeford on Sept. 15, 191, a daughter of Daniel and Eva (Menard) Hickey. She graduated from Biddeford High School in 1932.

Prior to her marriage to Raymond E. Mathieu who passed away in 1981, she was manager of several Kent’s Cleaners in the greater Biddeford-Saco and Portland areas. Since her marriage, she was a wife, mother and homemaker.

She was a lifetime parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Biddeford. She supported the church’s activities by volunteering for numerous projects and belonging to many of its organizations.

She was an avid beano player and loved to play various card games.

She belonged to the Biddeford PTA where she volunteered and chaired several activities. For many years she and her recently deceased lifelong friend, Laurette Towle belonged to Biddeford and Saco’s Thursday Club. She also supported and chaired many charitable organizations fund-raising drives which caused her many visits to the Blaine House in Augusta. She was particularly fond of the March of Dimes.

She was a charter member of the poker group called the GG’s, the gambling grandmothers, who met every Wednesday for 15 years. It has been said that it was a good source of income for her as she possessed the “luck of the Irish”; however, it was all skill. She always had her winnings of hundreds of dollars in glass bottles stored in her closet.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond E. Mathieu in 1981, and a sister Doris.

She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Rae Cote, her caregiver for several years and her husband, Eric of Saco; one son, Douglas D. Mathieu and his wife Deborah of Kennebunk; two grandsons, Benjamin Cote and Kevin Mathieu; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at St. Mary’s Church in Biddeford. Interment followed at Laurel Hill cemetery in Saco.

Catherine Sawtelle

OGUNQUIT – Catherine J. Sawtelle, 77, of Berwick Road, loving wife and mother, slipped quietly into heaven April 24, 2005 at York Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 12, 1928 in Guilford, Maine, the daughter of Henry and Dorothea (Hall) Johnson.

She was a homemaker all of her life and her enjoyment was raising her family.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Clair Sawtelle of Ogunquit; three daughters, Valerie Brown and Dori Randall, both of Wells, Anita Simpson of Stockbridge, Ga.; one son, Wilson Sawtelle of Shapleigh; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

A memorial service will be held at 2p.m. Friday, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells.

Lois Thayer

KENNEBUNK – Lois L. Thayer, 85, a lifelong resident of Kennebunk died on March 24, 2005 at her home. Her family would like to invite family and friends to her Graveside Service on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Pine Grove cemetery in West Kennebunk.

KENNEBUNK – Rene S. Rivard died Feb. 14, 2005. There will be a graveside committal service at Hope cemetery in Kennebunk on Friday at 11 a.m.
