Rena Perkins

OGUNQUIT — Rena Winn Perkins, age 94 of Beach Street, died July 18, 2005 at York Hospital.

She was born in York’s North Village on August 31, 1910, a daughter of Charles F. and Hattie L. Hill Winn. She attended local schools and graduated from Wells High School. She later attended and graduated from McIntosh Business School in Dover, NH.

She was a well known and respected business person in the Ogunquit area. She owned and operated, with her family, the Betty Doon Restaurant and Hotel on Beach Street for over 30 years.

In 1966 with her son, Newell, they opened and operated Perkins Real Estate on Beach Street. She retired at the age of 74 to winter in her Florida home.

Mrs. Perkins, at the time of her passing, was the longest standing member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church.

The Perkins/Winn family tree in North Village and Wells, dates back to the mid 1600’s.

Always interested in history and genealogy, she was often sought out for her knowledge of the family trees in Ogunquit, York and Wells.

She is predeceased by her husband, Grover S. Perkins, Sr; her two step daughters, Murial P. Eslinger and Marcel P. Taft; her brother, Arnold Winn; and her sister, Gertrude Winn Allen.

Surviving are her two sons, Grover S. Perkins, Jr. and his wife Margaret, of North Village in York, and Newell S. Perkins and his wife Nancy, of Ogunquit; two step sons, Marlowe Perkins of Mechanicsburg, PAQ and Merlin Perkins of Cortez, CO; a brother, Marlowe Perkins of Mechanicsburg, PA.; four grandchildren, LtCol Lee-Ann Perkins of Ramstein AB, Germany, G. Steve Perkins, III, of Moscow, Russia, Christian P. Perkins of Boston, and Jason S. Perkins of New York City; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Private family services will be held. If desired, donations can be made in her memory to the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, PO Box 801, Post Road, Wells, ME 04090.

Max Andrews

KENNEBUNK — Max Holt Andrews, 82, of Huntington Common, died the afternoon of Oct. 31, 2005, at Southern Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Ellsworth on May 9, 1923, to the Rev. Zebedee and Myrtle (Bradley) Andrews. During his youth, he lived in Lincoln, Cape Porpoise, West Scarborough, Searsport, Randolph, Ogunquit and Union: towns where his father served as Methodist minister. He graduated from Gardiner High School, class of 1939, and Coburn Classical Institute, Waterville 1940. He entered Springfield College with the class of 1944. In December 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and ultimately served with the 9th AAF in England, France, Germany and received four medals, one with the oak leaf cluster for the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to Springfield receiving his B.S. degree and M. Ed. degree in 1947.

At this time he met his future wife, Jane (White) Tippett of Longmeadow, Mass., and they married in 1948. In 1952, he was selected to head up the planning and organization of the new UConn Student Union Building at Storrs. He served as director until 1956, when he was invited to plan and monitor the construction of the Loeb Student Center at New York University, located on Washington Square at the foot of Fifth Avenue. In 1966 he was invited to plan and supervise construction of the new Student Union at Queens College, City University of New York. During his career in the College Union field, he was active in the professional organization, “The Association of College Union International.” He was elected president for 1963-1964. That same year, he received a University Citation, the equivalent of an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Buffalo for “outstanding contribution to the field of student personnel administration.” In 1970 he received the Butts-Whiting Award. In 1976, he and his wife Jane left Westport, Conn. for full time in Kennebunkport. They had a home on Chase Hill for many years. They bought the Maine Stay Inn. While Jane managed the inn, he worked as assistant director of the Portland School of Art (now the Maine College of Art) until full retirement in 1985. He then served on the board of trustees until 1992. He was a former member of the Cape Arundel Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years of Kennebunk; two sons, John and wife Judy, and James and wife Debbie, all of Arundel; grandchildren, Zebedee and wife Katie of Scarborough, Abra Andrews of Sanford, and Dylan Andrews and his partner Heidi Brown of Sanford, and Page of Syracuse University; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Keegan Andrews of Scarborough.

There are no visiting hours. A graveside service was held Saturday at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk with the Rev. Dr. Burton S. Howe officiating.

If desired, memorial donations may be made in his name to Maine College of Art, 97 Spring St., Portland, ME 04101.

Jean Bosworth

KENNEBUNK — Jean H. Bosworth, 81, of Acorn Circle, died the afternoon of Nov. 3, 2005, at Maine Medical Center.

She was born in McAlester, Okla. on April 15, 1924, the daughter of Harry S. and Elizabeth Campbell Smith Hodgins. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Wethersfield, Conn., where she attended local schools, graduating from Wethersfield High School, class of 1941. She then continued on to Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y., where she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing.

On Sept. 27, 1947, she married Donald H. Bosworth in Thompsonville, Conn.

She was a long-term public health nurse. She worked for VNA in Hartford for many years. In association with her profession, she was a long-term participant in the Framingham Nurse’s Study program.

After vacationing in Maine for many years, she and Donald became permanent residents of Maine in 1991, first living in Cape Neddick, and then Cape Porpoise.

She was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Harry Hodgins.

Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, of Cape Porpoise; two daughters, Wendy B. Case and her husband Edmund Case of Newton, Mass., and Dr. Donna E. Bosworth and her husband, Dr. Lawrence Borland of Murrysville, Pa.; five grandchildren, Emily and Adam Case, Kate, Seth and Keely Borland.

There are no visiting hours. A memorial service was held on Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Wethersfield, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to: The Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094; or The American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Rd., South Portland, ME 04106.

Dale Goodwin

KENNEBUNK — Dale C. Goodwin, 74, of 12 Christian Lane in Kennebunk died on Oct. 28, 2005, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

He was born in Presque Isle on May 27, 1931, a son of Maurice and Annabelle Butler.

He had worked many years as a building contractor and also was a masterful stained-glass artist.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and had received numerous medals including two bronze stars, the combat infantry badge and the Presidential Unit Citation.

He is survived by three sons, Daniel of Lake Tahoe, Gerald of Kay Marathon, Fla. and John O. of Wells; two grandchildren; and a half sister, Adwina Lago of Wilcot, Conn.

There will be no formal funeral service. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care of Maine, Portland.

Albert Kajander

WINCHESTER, Mass. — Albert A. Kajander of Winchester, Mass., Reading, Mass. and Maine, died on Nov. 3, 2005.

He was the beloved husband of Maxine M. (Lybeck) Kajander; loving father of Stephen of Winchester, Mass., Susan Condon of Kennebunkport, R. Scott and his wife Judy Barolak of Reading, Mass.; and devoted brother of John Kajander of Houston, Texas.

He worked for the Riverside Press, the book manufacturing division of Houghton Mifflin Company for 23 years, the plant closed; then Acme Printing Company for 12 years and then retired.

He was chairman of the Tufts class of 1945’s 45th reunion, president and trustee of the Edgecomb Tennis Club in Kennebunkport, and treasurer and secretary of the Winchester Badminton Club; also an active member of the First Congregational Church of Winchester.

Services and Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice Care Inc., 41 Montvale Ave., Stoneham, MA 02180 or to the Winchester ENKA Society, 1037 Main St., Winchester, MA 01890.

Audella Newell

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Audella (Whicher) Newell, 93, of Hattiesburg, Miss. died Nov. 2, 2005, at Windham House.

Services were held Sunday at Rose Hill Cemetery, Houlka, Miss.

She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Newell.

Survivors are two sons, William R. Newell of Pagosa Springs, Colo. and George A. Newell Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; two daughters, Mary H. Corkern of Meridian, Miss., and Elizabeth N. Payne of Hattiesburg, Miss.; one brother, Edward J. Whicher of Kennebunk; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements by Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home, Hattiesburg, Miss.

Memorials may be made to French Camp Academy, Frenchy Camp, Miss.

Elizabeth York

PORTLAND — Elizabeth York, 82, of Westbrook, formerly of Ocean Park, died early Saturday morning at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

She was born in Medford, Mass. Sept. 11, 1923, the daughter of George and Lois (Osgood) Skillins and graduated from Lynn Classical School. She attended Colby College and later graduated from Burdett Business College.

For many years she summered in Ocean Park where she met her husband Donald. They married and moved to Montreal while still summering in Ocean Park. She and her husband moved permanently to Ocean Park in 1977.

She was an accomplished artist winning first prize in the first Old Orchard Beach Art Competition. Her loves included animals, gardening, professional football and most fondly watching her grandson in his various sporting events.

She is predeceased by her husband Donald York in 1984 and one granddaughter Krista.

Survivors include three sons, Richard York of Kennebunkport, Gary and his wife Elise York of Westbrook and Glen and his wife Stephanie York of Scarborough; one grandson, Brian York of Scarborough; and two nephews, Richard Skillin and his wife Caryl Skillin and John Stephenson and his wife Nancy.

Basil Rounds Jr.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Basil D. Rounds Jr., 84, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly a longtime resident of the seacoast, died on Nov. 2, 2005, in Tucson.

Born in Lewiston, on July 8, 1921, he was a son of Basil D. Sr. and Nellie D. (Anderson) Rounds, attended local school, graduating from Lewiston High School with the class of 1938.

Following high school, he served his country as a member of the United States Navy until 1944. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1944 until his retirement from the supply department in 1974.

On June 14, 1941, he was married to his loving wife of many years Lorraine P. (Beaudoin) Rounds, who predeceased him in 1997.

In 2001, Basil moved from his home here in Kittery to Tucson where he was closer to his cherished daughter Donna Lee Rounds and his son in law and best friend Cosmo DeSantis.

A loving, quiet and gentle man, who loved the sea on the coast of Maine and the mountains of the West has now made the journey to a shining sea and will be greatly missed by the family he held so dear.

He is survived by one daughter, Donna Lee Rounds of Tucson, Ariz. and her husband Cosmo DeSantis; one brother, Richard H. Rounds of Tucson; one sister, Shirley A. Philbrick of Corpus Christi, Texas; one granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Joyal and her husband Richard of Barneveld, N.Y.; two grandsons, Christopher J. Rolfe and wife Mary of Falmouth, and William D. Rolfe and wife Brenda of Ayer, Mass.; seven great-grandchildren, Audrey and Richard Joyal, Brandon, Allison, and Tyler Rolfe, and Zachary and Alexandra Rolfe.

Kingsbury Browne Jr.

KENNEBUNKPORT —Kingsbury Browne Jr., 82, of Kennebunkport, died on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2005, of pneumonia.

He was born on Nov. 18, 1922, in Brookline, Mass. and raised in the Boston area. After attending Milton Academy preparatory high school, he went on to graduate cum laude from Harvard College in the wartime class of 1944. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps with the 313th Bomb Wing on Tinian Island where he commanded the 19th Photographic Laboratory. After the war, he studied at Harvard Law School, and received his L.L.B. degree in 1950. While at law school, he met Annette Upson of Newark, Ohio whom he married in June 1949. In the ensuing union of 56 years they raised a family of six children and six grandchildren. He began his formal legal career in Washington, D.C., with an emphasis on tax policy that subsequently evolved into nationally recognized expertise on land use and conservation. He was a former partner with the Boston law firm of Hill & Barlow, was a Fellow of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Law School studying land conservation in Amer

ica. He inspired the founding of the Land Trust Alliance, a non-profit organization established by the land trust community in 1982 to coordinate land preservation efforts. His friends knew first hand of his love for the outdoors. His avocations included fishing, gardening and bird watching, and he made numerous excursions by float plane with H. King Cummings of Skowhegan to Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. He had particular interest and was well schooled in the areas of archaeology, art, geology, and history. Many organizations benefited from his leadership; he served on the board of directors of Guilford Industries of Maine (now Interface Fabrics), Plimouth Plantation, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Children’s Zoo of Boston, and the Windsor School.

In addition to his wife Annette, he is survived by three daughters, Annette of Fort Myers, Fla., Juliet T. of Portland, and Gabriella R. of North Andover, Mass.; three sons, Kingsbury III of Golden, Colo., Mark A. of Mexico City, and Christopher U. of Fairfax, Va.; his younger brother David of Plympton, Mass.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunk.

Irene DesJardins

WELLS — Irene A. DesJardins, 90, of Furbish Road, Moody, formerly of Waltham, Mass., died Nov. 14, 2005, at her home.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass. on Sept. 2, 1915, a daughter of Henry and Victoria (Roy) Beaudoin. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Waltham in 1933.

She enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage with her husband “Tone.” In 1972 they retired and moved to Maine where they could enjoy the ocean every day. She loved the ocean and could often be found down by the shore reading her books.

She and her husband also traveled to Florida every winter, a trip they always looked forward to. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also a communicant at St. Mary’s Church in Wells and loved the music in the church.

Her husband Anthony C. “Tone” DesJardins predeceased her in 2000.

Surviving her are her four sons, Peter of Wrentham, Mass., David of Wells, Wayne of Chelmsford, Mass., and Alan of Wells; one sister, Doris Olsen of Grey Eagle, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

DESJARDINS — Friends of Irene DesJardins may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated with Father Ford at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Church on Eldridge Road in Wells. Interment will follow in Ocean View cemetery in December.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells, ME 04090.

Doris Ferns

SACO — Doris K. Ferns, 95, of Wells, formerly of Mooers, N.Y., died on Oct. 27, 2005, at The Monarch Center in Saco.

She was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y. on Aug. 21, 1910, the daughter of Charles H. and Eunice Martha (Hayes) King.

She graduated from Plattsburgh High School. She received her teaching diploma from Plattsburgh Normal School in 1932 where she served as the vice president of her class and as editor-in-chief of the Cardinal Yearbook. She was an honor student and described as “best natured” in her senior yearbook. She also took graduate courses at Albany State University. While attending the rededication of Hawkins Hall in 1999, she received an honorary BA degree along with her 1932 classmates. She was a loyal and devoted Plattsburgh graduate and will be missed.

On Dec. 28, 1947, she married Melvin A. Ferns in New York City. Melvin died Jan. 12, 1985.

She was a teacher for 41 years, retiring in 1973. Most of her teaching years were spent at Mooers Central School, teaching eighth- and ninth-grade English.

She was a member of the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Saranac Chapter 1142 of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, NYS Retired Teachers’ Association (zone representative), American Legion Auxiliary 538 of Mooers, and Miramichi Chapter 477 of the Order of the Eastern Star (past Matron). In Maine, she was a member of York County Retired Teachers’ Association and the Historical Society of Wells / Ogunquit.

Survivors include one son, Robert J. Ferns and his wife Wendy of Wells; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Marian King Randall, and her brother, Raymond King.

FERNS — Calling hours for Doris K. Ferns will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh, N.Y. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Mooers United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Hemmingford Protestant cemetery in Hemmingford, Quebec. Memorial donations may be made to the Mooers Free Library, P.O. Box 286, Mooers, NY 12958 or to the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 127 Beekman St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
