She graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree. On July 30, 1949, she married Dr. Paul L. Sweet in Rochester, N.Y.

Dr. and Mrs. Sweet moved to Danbury, Conn. in 1954, and lived there until 1986. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Danbury. She was also a member of the Danbury Garden Club, and was active in numerous civic and charitable organizations. Locally, she was a volunteer at Laudholm Farm. She enjoyed her grandchildren, coin and stamp collecting, and gardening. Her sons stated she was a terrific cook.

Norma Drews

KENNEBUNK — Norma Drews, 81, of Cat Mousam Road, Kennebunk, died, Jan. 14, 2006, after a brief, courageous battle with cancer.

She passed away at home, in peace and without pain, surrounded by her two loving daughters, Joyce McKay of Kennebunk and Linda Morgan of Buffalo; son-in-law Tom McKay; and her only grandson, Jason McKay of Kennebunk and Tucson.

She is survived by two brothers, Robert Helmuth of Lancaster, N.Y., and Norman Helmuth of Auburn, N.Y. For 45 years she was married to John W. Drews, who predeceased her in 1991.

She was born and lived most of her life in Buffalo and Lancaster, N.Y. She moved to Kennebunk in 1993. An avid gardener, she was a lover of both animals and people. She touched everyone with her kindness, sincerity and desire to help, asking nothing in return.

“She lived her life bravely and authentically. Her heart always led the way,” remembered daughter Joyce McKay. “She went out of her way to cheer for the underdog and help anyone down on their luck.”

She was a tireless animal lover, and was very active in animal rescue and fostering programs with Safe Haven.

“At a young age, Momma taught us to love animals, and that life is precious. When she moved to Maine, we began rescuing cats and kittens from the area shelter. Many times we’d sit up around the clock, caring for them until they were well enough to be adopted. We fostered more than 80 in all, many of them very ill, and never lost a single one. We’d even carry them around the house in our sweaters. We refused to let them die.

“She was beautiful,” McKay continued. “I loved to see her outside in the garden, wrapped in sunshine, with a stray leaf or two stuck in her beautiful silver-gray hair. Her braid wrapped around her head like a halo. She looked like a Swedish doll, with cherry-colored cheeks and her cheerful smile.”

Whatever she did, Norma totally immersed herself. “She’d come in from gardening looking like a child that had played hard and with abandon. When she baked, she looked like a sugar cookie, covered with flour.”

For Norma, every minute of every day was a celebration. “Mom never wanted to ‘call it a day’ and go to bed before midnight,” McKay remembered. “That meant the day was finally over, and she always wanted to squeeze a little more from each one. So she’d write one more letter, or knit another row in a hat she was making for American Indian children in the Southwest.”

She never wanted a thing for herself, McKay said. “Only to make us and everyone she knew happier.”

If friends desire, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 901 Washington Ave., Portland, ME 04103, which provided wonderful care, kindness and support during her passage, or to Safe Haven Animal Shelter and Humane Society, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090.

A private memorial service was held for family and close friends.
