Lena M. Hill

Kennebunk — Lena M. Hill, 93, a resident of Huntington Common, died Feb. 9, 2006, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Calais on July 12, 1912, a daughter of Raymond and Ethel Rouse Garnett and attended Calais schools.

She and her late husband Roland Hill previously ran a cottage-rental business in Moody Beach for several years. They also owned Hills News Agency store in the late 1920s, located on Main Street in Kennebunk, where, in addition to selling newspapers, periodicals, guns, and fishing and hunting supplies, they had a popular soda fountain. In 1935 they opened the Arundel Market on Route 1, Arundel. They stayed in business until their retirement in 1957.

She was a member of Christ Church in Kennebunk and a life member of the Priscilla Chapter of the Eastern Star of Kennebunk.

Lena enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.

Lena was pre-deceased by her husband Roland Hill, who died in 1994, two brothers, George and Walter Garnett; and three sisters, Marion Lord, Pauline Quilter, and Ethel Littlefield.

She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Daggett-Cote of Kennebunk, and a son Edward R. Hogue and his wife Leonora of West Kennebunk, and 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, with an Eastern Star service at 4 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

A funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 13, at the Chapel with the Rev. Ellie Mercer officiating. Interment will be in Hope cemetery in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094, in Mrs. Hill’s memory.

The family of Lena M. Hill would like thank to the staff of Huntington Common for providing care that allowed her to remain at home until her death. They also wish to thank Beacon Hospice for their wonderful care and support over the past two years.

Arrangement are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Edwin Kimball

YORK — Edwin “Cider” Kimball passed away after a brief illness on Feb. 9 at age 87. A lifelong resident of York, he was the son of Harold and Grace (Whitten) Kimball.

He spent many years in York politics as selectman, treasurer, administrator to the Board of Selectmen, Planning Board and others.

Married to Jeanne Ann Roberts of Stamford, Conn., in March of 1943, they were married for almost 63 years. He is survived by his wife and two children, Lee Kimball of South Portland and Lynn (Kimball) Gruber, and three grandsons of Upton, Mass.

He served five years in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater with the 76th Division. His military service continued with the Army, retiring as a major from the Army Reserve in 1978.

He was a charter member of The Rotary Club of York; an active member of the First Parish Congregational Church; a member, and later chairman, of the Board of Directors of the Kennebunk Savings Bank; and Commander of the York American Legion. He was also a member of the St. Aspinquid Lodge of Masons; the Board of Directors of the Old York Historical Society; and the Board of Directors of the York Golf and Tennis Club. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Maine Seniors Golf Association.

A memorial service was held Feb. 13 at the First Parish Congregational Church on York Street in York.

Joan Messier

KENNEBUNK — On Feb. 12, 2006, Joan Flanagan Messier, 78, formerly of Hamden, peacefully passed away, surrounded by family.

She is predeceased by her husband Donald. She leaves her daughter, Mini Walsh of Kennebunkport; her son, Don Messier of Kennebunk, Maine; her daughter, Kathy Nutter of Kennebunk; her daughter Sue Zukoff of Hamden, Conn.; and her daughter, Renee Messier of Biddeford.

She also leaves her brothers, Jack Flanagan of Hamden, Conn.; Jimmy Flanagan of Branford, Conn.; Charlie Flanagan of Branford, Conn.; and Bobby Flanagan of Higganum, Conn.; as well as her grandsons; Neil and Brendan Messier, James and Rob Nutter and Makary and Rory Zukoff.

A funeral mass will be on today at 10 a.m. at St. Rita’s Church on Whitney Ave. in Hamden. Burial to follow at St. Mary’s cemetery in Mount Carmel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 901 Washington Ave., Suite 104, Portland, ME 04103.

Rene Paquette

ELIOT — Rene Eugene Paquette, 65, of Bolt Hill Road died at his home Feb. 10, 2006, after a brief illness. born in Plymouth, N.H., on Jan. 25, 1941, he was the son of the late Ernest J. and Rhenda B. (Lucier) Paquette.

He attended the Ashland (N.H.) public schools and served in the United States Navy from April 1959 to April 1963. He was employed by the U.S. government at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an electronics mechanic and Production Shop planner. He was later employed by Analysis & Technology, Inc. as an inventory technician following his retirement in 1993. Rene was a very talented woodworker who built toys and furniture for both friends and family. He also enjoyed reading about the old West and took up computers in his retirement. Rene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Marie Julie in 1947, Anne G. Larochelle in 1974, and Helen Brousseau in 2005.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Alice (McNamara) Paquette of Eliot; his daughter, Tammi Maines and her husband William “Rick” of Sanford; seven brothers, Bernard A. Paquette of Ashland, N.H., and Lake City, Fla., Robert W. Paquette of Bennettsville, S.C., Richard Paul Paquette of Franklin, N.H., Joseph Ronald Paquette of Cordele, Ga., and Tilton, N.H., F. Andre Paquette of Laconia, N.H., Ernest A. Paquette of Ashland, N.H., and Raymond M-R. Paquette of Hebron, Conn.; two sisters, Lorette M. Thibeault and Paula F. Paquette, both of Franklin, N.H.; and two grandsons, Zachary and Alexander Maines of Sandford. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Leo Larochelle and his wife, Celine of Manchester, N.H.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Feb. 14, 2006, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 106 School St., in Franklin, N.H., at 10 a.m.; the Rev. Raymond E. Gagnon celebrated the Mass. Interment took place within a niche at the Columbarium at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Rt. 3, Boscawen, N.H. There was no visiting hours.

The family suggests expressions of sympathy in Rene’s name be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 901 Washington Ave., Suite 104, Portland, ME 04103.

Eileen Vanasse

DAMARISCOTTA — Eileen Heffernan Vanasse, 84, a resident of 35 Water St., formerly of North Smithfield R.I., and Kennebunkport, died Feb. 1, 2006, on the skilled unit of Fieldcrest Nursing Home in Waldoboro after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born Aug. 17, 1921, in North Smithfield, R.I., the daughter of John J. and Catherine O’Connell Heffernan. She attended schools in Blackstone Mass., is a graduate of the Elms College in Chicopee, Mass., attended Providence College and received her master’s degree in education from Rhode Island College.

She married her husband Albert J. Vanasse of Woonsocket, R.I., on Aug. 28, 1946, in Pawcatuck, Conn.

She began her teaching career in Warwick, R.I., the following year in Bellingham, Mass., and then at the North Smithfield School for a year. She then took time off to raise her children, then returned to the North Smithfield School system for 11 years, finding great joy in teaching fourth-grade children.

She and her husband volunteered at the Meeting St. School for Children with Disabilities and special needs in Providence, R.I. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and walking the beaches near her summer homes in Fortunes Rocks and Kennebunkport. They moved to Damariscotta from Rhode Island in 1984.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Albert J. Vanasse of Damariscotta; a son, David Vanasse and his wife Julie of York; two daughters, Nancy Vanasse of Tenants Harbor, and Jane Ludwig of Damariscotta Mills; seven grandchildren, Amy Weyand Acuna of Venice, Calif.; Lydia Vanasse of Dover N.H.; Jake Ramsey of Arlington Va.; Owen Ludwig of Falstaff Ariz.; Devon Ludwig of Middletown, Conn.; Jasper Ludwig of Olympia, Wash.; David House of Dorchester, Mass.; three great-grandchildren Sam MacLean of Dover, N.H., Ava MacLean of Dover and Dakota Acuna of Venice, Calif.

A private celebration of life service will be held in the spring.

Interment will be in Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va.

Robert V. Elwood

WORCESTER, Mass., and MOODY BEACH — Robert V. Elwood, 60, of Worcester died Feb. 4, 2006.

He leaves his wife of 36 years, Susan E. (Doherty) Elwood; three daughters, Erin Elwood, wife of Michael Bernard of Stratham, N.H., Meghan Hubacz, wife of John Hubacz of Wells, and Shannon Delello, wife of James Delello of Portsmouth, N.H.; three grandchildren, Madison and Alex Bernard and Sean Delello; a sister, Susan Devaney of Village of Loch Lloyd, Mo.; and several nephews and nieces. He was extremely close with his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and nephews and nieces.

He was born in Providence, R.I., son of Vincent and Margaret (O’Hare) Elwood, graduated from St. John’s High School and the University of Massachusetts. Mr. Elwood was a self-employed certified public accountant in Holden for many years. He was a member of the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Worcester Lodge of Elks. He enjoyed his summers in Moody Beach, as well as spending time with his grandchildren and he ruined the punch line of many a good joke.

Mary Louise Fisher Jekelis

WELLS — Mary Louise Fisher Jekelis, 80 of Wells died Jan. 14, 2006, at the Monarch Center in Saco.

She was born June 17, 1925 ,in Uniontown, Penn., to Donald and Marie Fisher. Her life with her family began upon her marriage to Leopold Edward (Jake) Jekelis on May 21, 1949. She steadfastly followed him wherever his Air Force career took him, from Ohio to Alabama, to Washington, D.C., Pennsyl-vania, Oregon and finally to Colorado.

Mary was employed as a sales clerk for the J.C. Penney Company for 18 years.

She was the bedrock of her family and contributed greatly to the determination, loyalty and love that carried forward into their lives, “as well as the stubbornness and occasional orneriness,” her family said. Whether it was dancing in the kitchen, camping in the wilderness, or playing catch in the yard, she shared a special place in their lives.

From her family: “You will always be a part of us, Mom! Keep Dad company until we are all together again.”

Surviving are two sons, D. Michael Jekelis of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Patrick (Rick) Jekelis of Aurora, Colo.; two daughters, Frances L. Cooledge of Wells, and Judy J. Winger of Overland Park, Kansas; a brother, Donald Fisher; and nine grandchildren.

There are no services locally. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Fort Logan National cemetery in Denver, Colo., where she will be buried alongside her husband.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

Joan Messier

KENNEBUNK — On Feb. 12, 2006, in Kennebunk, Joan (Flanagan) Messier, 78, formerly of Hamden, peacefully passed away, surrounded by family.

She is predeceased by her husband Donald. She leaves one son, Don Messier of Kennebunk; four daughters, Mini Walsh of Kennebunkport, Kathy Nutter of Kennebunk, Sue Zukoff of Hamden, Conn., and Renee Messier of Biddeford; four brothers, Jack Flanagan of Hamden, Conn., Jimmy Flanagan of Branford, Conn., Charlie Flanagan of Branford, Conn., and Bobby Flanagan of Higganum, Conn.; and six grandsons, Neil and Brendan Messier, James and Rob Nutter and Makary and Rory Zukoff.

Bonnie Bonney

KENNEBUNK — Bonnie (Bilderback Gibson) Bonney, 61, passed away on Feb. 16, 2006, in Destin, Fla.

She was born in Portland, on March 9, 1944, and was the daughter of the late Edward L. Bilderback.

She had a love for the beach, reading, cooking, yard sales, and enjoyed her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She also had a love for cats and was involved in Feline Friends in Florida.

Throughout her life she worked at The Captain’s Restaurant in Cape Porpoise, Kesslin Shoe, Morning Star Corp., Rockwood Industries of South Portland, and the Wells Steak House. She especially enjoyed her hot dog stand “BB’s Dogs” at The Hillcrest Driving Range in Kennebunk.

She is survived by her husband, William Bonney, of San Destin, Fla., and Kennebunk; one daughter, Wendy Gibson-Gray and husband, Galen, her mother, Beryl Bilderback, all of Cape Porpoise; one brother, Edward Bilderback and wife, Janet, of Foley, Ala.; one sister, Carol Gray, of Sun City, Ariz.; and one stepson, Jeffery Bonney, and wife, Myra, of Kennebunk; six grandchildren, Lindsey, Kelsey and Gibby Shields, Christina Gray, and Shasha and Will Bonney.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the West Kennebunk Animal Welfare Society. A memorial service is planned in Kennebunk for later in June of 2006. Time and place will be announced later.

James Carter

WELLS — James O. Carter, 91, of Lynnfield, Mass., (summering on Drakes Island), died Feb. 13, 2006, at the Bear Hill Nursing Center in Wakefield.

Born in Lowell, Mass., on Nov. 22, 1924, he was the son of the late George and Sarah (Greenall) Carter.

He was raised in Lowell and was a graduate of Lowell High School. He had been a Lynnfield resident since 1950. In 1955, he became the founder and owner of James O. Carter Company Inc., in Wakefield and retired in 1976.

He enjoyed spending summers at his cottage on Drakes Island in Wells, since 1947.

He was the husband of the late Hope (Jewett) Carter. He is survived by one son, James J. Carter and his wife Marsha of Lynnfield; his two daughters, Christine Moses and her husband Steven Sculley of Weaverville, N.C. and Deborah H. Applin and her husband Rob of Lynnfield; his three grandchildren, Matthew and Thomas Applin and Sarah Wilson; and two great-grandsons.

He was predeceased by his sister Ann Carter and his brother George Carter.

A memorial service was held in the Loud Chapel of the First Baptist Church, Wakefield on Saturday.

Frances Cassidy

KENNEBUNK — Frances (Risteen) Miller Cassidy, 88, formerly of Summer Street, died Feb. 12, 2006, following a short illness.

She was born in Skowhegan, a daughter of George E. and Alice H. (Twombly) Risteen. She worked for the former Independent Reporter, a weekly paper as circulation manager. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and camping.

She is predeceased by her first husband, Howard Miller and second husband, Robert Cassidy.

She leaves one sister, Verna H. Batchelder of Freeport; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; and a step-son and his family.

Burial will be in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk.

Kendrick Holbrook

CAPE PORPOISE —Kendrick W. Holbrook, 76, of Mills Road, died the afternoon of Feb. 14, 2006, at Southern Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Portland on July 17, 1929, a son of Kendrick and Gertrude (Whitney) Holbrook. He was educated in Biddeford schools, and graduated from Biddeford High School.

On May 21, 1952, he married Gloria Hilton in Portland.

He worked for a time delivering home heating oil until he was offered the chance to work for the railroad. He hired on with the Boston and Maine Railroad (now Guilford Rail System), and started a career that spanned over 30 years as a locomotive engineer. He operated steam-powered locomotives, and holds the distinction of firing the last steam engine on the Boston and Maine during their transition to diesel power. His wife said railroading was in his blood, and he would often answer the call in the middle of the night to operate, even if it meant driving through a blizzard to get there. He retired in 1989. In his retirement, his worked for Port Lobster Company, Cape Porpoise.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, and was active in many organizations in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. In addition to railroading, he enjoyed motorcycles and dogs.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years of Cape Porpoise; four sons, Eric W. Holbrook of Fla., Brian W. Holbrook of Fla., Adam W. Holbrook of South Berwick, Kendrick W. Daggett of Kennebunk;

one daughter, Karynn McIntyre of Saco; two brothers, Donald Holbrook of Kennebunkport, David Holbrook of Cape Porpoise; one sister, Maryanne Collard of Arundel; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Per his request, there will be no services. Arrangements under the direction of Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
