Edwin L. Strout
Edwin L. Strout, who lived in Gray most of his life, died unexpectedly at his home on December 30.

He was born in Poland, a son of Edwin R. and Beatrice W. Strout, and attended Pennell Institute. He married Judith Butler on June 11, 1953, and worked for Gray Electronics for more than 30 years.

He was a volunteer fireman and constable for the Town of Gray.

He is survived by his wife; a sister, Sylvia Pawlowski, of South Portland; two sons, Jeffrey, of Poland, and Timothy, of Springvale; two daughters, Linda Gay, of Sanford, and Julie Mason, of Turner; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held last Tuesday, with Pastor Darwin Vail officiating. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Elaine M. Moran, 79
Elaine Marie Moran, 79, of New Gloucester, died Wednesday July 27, 2005 after a lengthy illness.

Elaine was born in Auburn on September 26, 1925, a daughter of William Ferracci and Gabrielle (Martin) Ferracci. She was educated in Mt. Vernon, NY, schools and graduated from AB Davis High School Class of 1943.

She worked for many years as a Direct Care giver at Pineland Center. After retirement she volunteered at Memorial School in New Gloucester helping especially with the reading program. She was an avid reader, enjoyed yard sailing, and getting away to camp.

She will be remembered as a generous, liberal, understanding and open-minded woman. She had a wonderful sense of humor and wit who liked to keep things light and maintained this spirit throughout her life. Most important to her was her family and any occasion for a gathering.

She is survived by five children: Roger LeClair, Jr. of Gray; Dr. James LeClair, of California; Barbara Milleisen of New York; Dorian LeClair, of Bowdoin; and Richard LeClair, of Freeport; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert Ferracci, of Monmouth, and William Ferracci, of Florida. She was predeceased by her two husbands, James Moran and Roger LeClair, Sr., her brother Fern, and her granddaughter Loni LeClair.

Services for Elaine will be held at a later time by the family. Arrangements are under the care of Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME 04096.

Eleanor Sawyer dies in Virginia
Eleanor F. Sawyer, 97, died January 5 in a Virginia Beach, VA, nursing home.

Mrs. Sawyer was born in Gray to the late Otis and Fannie Witham. She was a lifelong resident of Gray until 2002, when, due to declining health, she moved to Virginia to be close to her daughter and grandchildren.

She worked for many years as a telephone operator for the Pine Tree Telephone Company.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Witham.

She is survived by her daughter, Helen I. Gilpatrick and husband James T. Gilpatrick, Jr.; a grandson, James O. Gilpatrick; two granddaughters, Kathy McLawhorn and Lorie Goode and her husband Allen Goode; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Goode and Janet Hill; and a great-great-grandson, Alexander Hill; all are from Virginia Beach. She is also survived by a cousin, Nancy Ore, of Norway; a niece, Dorothy Leavitt; a nephew, Stephen Witham; and many other nieces and nephews, as well as friends in the local area.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, January 8, in Virginia Beach.

Elizabeth Caswell dies at 81
Elizabeth Merrill Berry Caswell, 81, passed away February 15.

She was born in New Gloucester on September 30, 1923, daughter of Henry True and Ina (Haskell) Merrill.

Elizabeth graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1942 and graduated from Dr. Leighton's Hospital in Portland as an LPN. She worked in the field of gynecology and obstetrics until she was married in 1945 to Ronald Walter Berry, of New Gloucester, who died in 1966. Elizabeth enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting and was a 60-year member of the Sabbathday Lake Grange. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed family gatherings.

Elizabeth was predeceased by two brothers, Blynn and Henry Merrill. She is survived by her daughter, Althea Driscoll and her husband Stephen; her two sons, Stephen Berry and wife Bonnie, of Gray, and Walter Berry and his wife Rena; seven grandchildren, Leesa and Jennifer Driscoll, Mitchell Berry, Cindy and Patricia Berry, Tim Lewis and Angie George; one brother, True Merrill and wife Mary; and many nieces and nephews.

There was a period of remembrance on Friday at Wilson Funeral Home. A graveside service will be announced in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to New Gloucester Rescue, P.O. Box 82, New Gloucester, Maine 04260.

Mrs. Caswell's Family would like to thank the Staff at Clover Manor for the wonderful care they provided.

Elizabeth Clement Beverage
Loving mother and grandmother Elizabeth Clement Beverage, 83 died Thursday at her residence in New Gloucester.

Born in Portland, the daughter of Wesley and Annie Clement Freese, she attended local schools, graduating from Westbrook Junior College.

Mrs. Beverage lived in New Gloucester 44 years and attended the First Congregational Christian Church of New Gloucester. She belonged to several associations, including the Order of Eastern Star, Gold Star Wives of America, New Gloucester Congregational Evening Guild, Roach Pond Improvement Assn., American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the Maine Association of Retirees.

She enjoyed fishing and family activities at her camp at Roach Pond.

Pre-deceased are her first husband Howard Jordan and her second husband Henry Beverage.

Surviving are one son, Wayne H. Jordan of New Gloucester; five grandchildren, Wendy Ordway, Daniel Jordan, Susan Bartlett, Karen Harlow, all of New Gloucester, and Patty Wolcott of Lake Placid, N.Y., and 13 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Emily Gallant, 75
Elizabeth Emily "Barbara" Gallant, 75, died September 4 at a Portland hospital.

Born in Lynn, Mass., she was a daughter of Martin and Francis Stevens Dolan, and attended local schools.

Mrs. Gallant was a 38-year member of Gray Unit American Legion Auxiliary, Cabane 1003, 40 and 8, the Senior Citizens of North Yarmouth, Extension of North Yarmouth and St. Gregory's Parish, Gray.

She was previously a member of the Parent Teacher Association and Fireman Auxiliary.

Her husband of 43 years, Clifford H. Gallant, Sr., died November 10, 1987.

Surviving are five sons, Clifford, Jr., of Portland, Thomas, of Waldoboro, Kenneth, of Kennebunkport, Steven, of Westbrook and Scott, of Gray; two daughters, Gaye G. Prescott, of Westbrook and Elaine M. Gallant, of North Yarmouth; two brothers, William and Richard Dolan, both of Revere, Mass.; a sister, Doris Christie, of Revere, Mass.; 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray, Maine.

Ella Dow Tayman
Ella Dow Tayman, 72, of Gray, died December 25 at a Portland nursing home.

Born in Portland, Mrs. Tayman was the daughter of Reverend Chauncey and Ella Dow Harding. She graduated from Winslow High School, and worked at Songo Shoe and Fairchild. She married Melvin E. Tayman in 1947. She was an avid Boston Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots fan.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1992. Mrs. Tayman is survived by two sons, Robert E. Tayman, of Gray, and Richard E. Tayman, of Portland; two brothers, Charles Harding, of Naples, FL, and Lawrence Harding, of Portland; one sister, Elizabeth Pettingill, of Kissimee, FL; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were private. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Emily Segars
Emily M. Segars,87, of New Gloucester, died December 20 at a Lewiston Nursing Home. She was born March 21,1917, to William A. and Clara (Merrill) Bridgham. She attended Poland schools and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School.

Mrs. Segars worked at Lown and Crest Shoe for 18 years. She also worked for13 years with Concord Group Insurance Companies, retiring in 1982, and returning a year later to work part-time for another 7 years. She was a Charter Member of the Busy Bee Club of Poland (60+years); a member of Golden Sheaf Chapter 114, Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years, serving as Worthy Matron several terms; a member of Hiawatha Rebekah Lodge, later affiliated with Fidelity in Auburn (50+years), a member of Androscoggin Valley Chapter of Insurance Women (International). As a member of Certified Professional Insurance Women, she was named Insurance Woman of the Year in 1982.

She served as a volunteer at the New Gloucester News since 1983.

Mrs. Segars is survived by three sons, Ronald and his wife Marilyn, of MA, Roger, of Brunswick, and Charles and his wife Linda, of New Gloucester; seven grandsons, six great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons, two great-great-granddaughters two step-grandsons, four step-great-grandsons and two step-great-granddaughters.

A funeral was held at the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester; committal will be in the spring, with Reverend Linda Gard officiating.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Erma Mitchell passes away
Erma Mitchell, 77, of New Gloucester, died April 17, 2005 at Bolster Heights Nursing Home.

Born December 13, 1927, at Poland, Maine, she was the daughter of Wendell C. and Annie Farwell Strout of Poland.

Erma was educated in Poland grammar school and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1946. She married Rodney E. Mitchell June 9, 1946. Mrs. Mitchell was employed at the Summit Springs Hotel, Mansion House at Poland Springs, and was a housekeeper for Mrs. A.B. Ricker and Colonel Henry Woodberry. She also worked as a cook for Gray Manor, and lastly was a personal companion to five women.

Erma was a 35-year member of the Gray Unit # 86 American Legion Auxiliary and was Sergeant-at-Arms for several years, and was the greeter for the public bean suppers. Erma was the champion seller of raffle tickets for the Cumberland County supper at the Gray Post. A 25-year member of Cabane 1003 of the 40 & 8, she was Garde de la Porte for several years and was active in their many projects. Erma was a 60-year member of the Sabbathday Lake Grange, a member of the New Gloucester Congregational Church and the 6th Street Church in Auburn and the Red Hat society. She enjoyed camping, American Legion events and partaking in Red Hat society events.

She was predeceased by her husband, Rodney E. Mitchell, in 1990.

Surviving are two daughters, Norma Lea Sundberg, of Ogunquit, Wendy and her husband Bruce H. Emery, of Gray, and one grandson, Heath L. Emery, of Gray.

A visitation period was held at Wilson Funeral Home, and a funeral was held immediately following the visitation period, Pastor Richard Campbell officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation of your choice.

Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
