Edwin Littlefield

OGUNQUIT — Edwin Maxwell Littlefield, 88, of South Street, Ogunquit, died Dec. 21, 2005, in his home after a long illness lovingly surrounded by his family.

He was born in Ogunquit on Sept. 24, 1917, the son of C. Herbert and Clara (Maxwell) Littlefield. He graduated from Wells High School in 1935 and attended the McIntosh Business College in Dover, N.H. In 1940, he married Eleanor Elizabeth Galeucia.

He served in the Navy during World War II. After the War, he worked at Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut for three years and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist for more than 30 years.

He was born with an entrepreneurial spirit. He owned and ran the Footbridge Takeout in Ogunquit, the Dreamer’s Delight Restaurant, and an eight-bedroom guest house – Ye Olde Maxwell Place. The guest house had been in his mom’s family since the late 1600s and pretty much in its present form since 1720.

As busy as he was, he always greeted the day with a smile. In his words, “Every day is a holiday”; to him the sky was always blue. He was well known around the town that he loved for his good nature and his charitable ways. He loved the tourists that came to town and always tried to make them feel at home. When the beach parking would fill up, he would put out a sign and advertise free parking. Oftentimes the tourists would ask what they owed for the privilege of parking for a day at the beach and he would refer them to his sign. He also allowed many of the local workers to park there. He would often park more than 100 cars in his field.

He was a member of Ocean Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Wells. He was a longtime member of the Ogunquit Methodist Church.

He enjoyed his family, coffee with his buddies at Dunkin Donuts and McDonald’s, traveling, a good cribbage game, running the guesthouse, and singing. He would break out in song whenever the mood hit him. After building his new house, he also took special pride in his lawn.

His wife Eleanor in 1989; two sisters Persis Keene and Ethel “Peg” Smalley predeceased him; and sister-in-law and special companion Priscilla Galeucia.

Surviving him are two daughters, Ellen Preble and her husband David of South Gardiner and Elissa Boulier and her husband Gerald of Wells; four grandchildren, Alex and his wife Kristin, Jason, Jeremy, and Michael and his wife Michelle; one great-granddaughter, Kaylie; two sisters-in-law, Carole Coker and husband Richard and Barbara Pavlovich and her husband Paul; and many nieces and nephews.

A Masonic service was held, followed by a funeral service at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells with Pastor Sharon Miesel. Interment will follow in the spring in Ocean View cemetery in Wells.

Should friends desire memorial donations may be made to either: Hospice of Southern Maine, 901 Washington Ave., Suite 104, Portland, ME 04103 or United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit, 1026 Route 1, York, ME 03909.
