Ludmila Hoffman

OGUNQUIT — Ludmila (Mila) W. Hoffman, Ed.D., passed away peacefully at her home in Ogunquit, on June 13, 2006, with her immediate family at her side following a multi-year battle with cancer. She held degrees from Colby College and Boston University. She was a recognized and well-regarded clinical psychologist, therapist and senior academician in the Boston area. Over the course of 30 years, she was in a joint private practice in Newton and Cambridge, Mass., with her husband, Dr. Herbert J. Hoffman.

Her life was distinguished by her extraordinary love, devotion and commitment to her family, friends and life itself. Her commitment to excellence as a psychologist was unsurpassed. A loyal and devoted wife, co-parent, and professional partner with her husband, she adored her children, Kim and Barry, and together with Herbert, loved, nurtured, guided and supported them with thoughtful, purposeful and unwavering dedication.

She brought an infectious energy and excitement to all of her private and public endeavors. She created a sense of community wherever she lived – from Newton to Cambridge to Costa Rica and finally in Ogunquit, Maine. These communities often brought together individuals in common purpose who otherwise may have never met. Those that she encountered often reported that they were not only more enlightened, but also more positive about their own lives and the course of humanity, as a result of meeting and interacting with her. In addition to being a leader in professional education, she also gave unselfishly of her time to assist her community in establishing policies for the delivery of social services. Active in progressive politics, she was a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq and the Administration’s assault on civil liberties.

In recent years, she turned her energy to honing her writing skills. She became quite accomplished and her articles often appeared in local papers and other publications.

She liked to collect shells on the beach, make sounds of birds and witness the joy of laughing dogs. She feared wars and loss of her children, dreaded injustice or physical pain. She celebrated our glorious Earth and having lived, lived, lived.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Dr. Herbert J. Hoffman of Ogunquit; her daughter, Kim E. Hoffman of Glastonbury, Conn.; and a son, Barry A.L. Hoffman of Los Angeles, who with his partner, Christopher Larson, have a daughter, Hope Rebecca Hoffman-Larson.

A memorial in Ludmila (Mila) W. Hoffman’s honor will be held at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology in Dedham, Mass., on Sept. 21, at 5 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
