Helen Ainsworth

KENNEBUNK – Helen W. Ainsworth, 96, of Fletcher Street, died the afternoon of April 8, 2006, at York Hospital.

She was born in Shrewsbury, Vt., on Dec. 15, 1909, a daughter of the late David and Emily (Williams) Wetherby. She was the widow of George Kenneth Ainsworth.

She attended grammar school in Shrewsbury, Vt., and graduated from Wallingsford High School, Wallingsford, Vt.

She was employed as a design engineer of the air brakes division of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, N.Y., for 30 years. When the plant closed, she moved to Montreal, Canada where she was employed at the Montreal Locomotive Company for three years. Upon retirement in 1972, she moved to Kennebunk and lived with her long-time friend, Rachel Lockerby.

She enjoyed reading, playing golf and knitting for her family and friends. She also knit for the Kennebunk Museum, The Old Timers’ Shop of Sanford and the Head Start Program.

She was predeceased by her son, Kenneth, two brothers, Barney and Bert Wetherby and two sisters, Mary Collins and Minnie Wetherby.

She is survived by five grandchildren, Gail A Krutka of Weldell, Mass., Tim Ainsworth of Council Bluffs, Iowa, June A. Ring of Lincoln, Nebraska, Brenda A. Depp of Royal, Ark., and David Ainsworth of Stafford, Mo.; eight great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held in Vermont at a later date.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Elizabeth Brooks

SACO – Elizabeth M. (Connell) Brooks, 86, a resident of Saco formerly of Kennebunkport, died April 10, 2006, in Saco after along illness.

She was born in Hudson, N.H., on Sept. 20, 1919, a daughter of Orrin H. and Clara B. (Hare) Connell.

She was a long-time homemaker and spent most of her married life in Connecticut, and more recently in Lyman and Kennebunkport. The Brooks had no children.

She was predeceased by her husband, James R. Brooks and her two brothers, Orrin H. and Ralph Connell.

She is survived by one step-sister, Florence Travis of North Carolina; one step-brother, Arthur Leach and his wife Shirley of Turbot’s Creek, Kennebunkport; and several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Gladys Bryant

ATHENS – Gladys Mae Bryant, 85, of Athens, Maine, died April 14, 2006, at Readington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

She was born April 27, 1920, in Kennebunk, a daughter of Hartland and Daisy (Wildes) Hutchins.

She was a past member of Rebekahs. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Her husband, Victor M. Bryant, predeceased her.

She is survived by one son, Ray Bryant of West Stewartstown, N.H.; two daughters, Alice Williamson of Kingfield, Maine, and Joanne Watts of Harmony, Maine; four brothers, Lester Hutchins of West Kennebunk, Ralph Hutchins of West Kennebunk, Robert Hutchins of Colorado, and Kenneth Hutchins of West Kennebunk; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A Rebekah service was conducted Tuesday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Kennebunk Baptist Church on Main Street in Kennebunk with Pastor Tim Hutchins officiating. Interment followed in Pine Grove cemetery in West Kennebunk.

Mary Cole

WELLS – Mary A. (Cheney) Cole, 84, a lifelong resident of Wells, passed peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on April 14, 2006.

She was born in Wells on Jan. 19, 1922, daughter of the late Grover and Alberta (Annis) Cheney. She started her education in a one-room school house in Wells and was a graduate of Wells High School, Class of 1939.

Her husband, Charles A. Cole, died in 1991, after sharing 52 years of marriage. For many years, they spent their winters in Delray Beach, Fla.

She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 41 years, and in 1970, she followed in the footsteps of both her father and mother as postmaster in Wells – she served in this capacity until her retirement in 1980.

She was a member of The Congregational Church of Wells. She was also a member and Past Noble Grand of the Olive Rebekah Lodge 21 of Kennebunk, Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, Friends of the Wells Public Library, Ladies Auxiliary of the Wells Beach Hose Company, the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center and the National and Maine State Postmasters Associations. She was a member and served as Master of the Wells Grange 453 Patrons of Husbandry, a member of York County Pomona 14 and Maine State Grange. She remained involved in civic leadership and community activities well into her later years.

In 1968, she chaired a Wells Grange Community Progress Committee and suggested that the town of Wells needed a public library, and she committed herself to that vision for years. Through persistent lobbying, dedication and hard work, her goal became a reality when the Wells Public Library was dedicated in February 1979. She was recognized for her service as a founding member of the Wells Public Library and was bestowed with the status of Lifetime Honorary Director in 1991. A stained-glass window was installed in honor of Alberta (Cheney) Morison and Mary Cole for their long devotion to the library in 1991.

In addition to being an accomplished knitter, she enjoyed researching her family genealogy and the rich history of the town of Wells, bowling, reading, painting, card playing and going to bingo with friends.

She looked forward to family gatherings and outings, and she will be missed by all. For the past nine years she also enjoyed the companionship of Christy, her Collie.

She is survived by her six children, Justice Roland A. Cole and his wife, Thomasina of Wells, Charlene Bailey and her husband, Robert of Salem, Mass., Cheryl L. Cole of Silver Lake, N.H., Roxane A. Cole and her husband, James Keil of Westbrook; and one grandson, Pierce Cole of Wells.

She was predeceased by her son, Richard Grover Cole, and her sister, Madelene M. Cheney.

A Rebekah memorial service was held Wednesday evening at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m., at the Congregational Church of Wells, Post Road, with the Rev. Herbert Henry officiating. Interment will be at Ocean View Cemetery, Wells,

Glen Dusseault

WELLS – Glen R. Dusseault, 44, passed away suddenly on April 10, 2006, near his home on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.

Born in Sanford, on Dec. 5, 1961, he was the son of Richard and Betty (Rogers) Dusseault of Wells.

He grew up in Wells, and was a fisherman almost from birth. He graduated from Wells High School in 1980, and later followed his childhood dream of moving to southeast Alaska where he spent the past 24 years. He was a free spirit and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed a rugged subsistence lifestyle. His livelihood was fishing and crabbing commercially; hunting, trapping and working on various construction projects that included building his own home at Naukati Bay. When times were tough he often said, “It’s not a hassle – it’s an adventure.” His sense of humor, kindness, and generosity will be greatly missed by the many friends and family who shared his adventures here and in Alaska. He will always be remembered with great admiration for having the courage to pursue his dream.

Besides his parents, he is survived by five sisters; Norma Bee and her husband Herbert Bee of Wells, Joan Nixon of Wells, Denise Dusseault of Portland, Brenda Berenty of Apex, N.C., and Anne Farnsworth of Arundel; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Eleanore Jemison

CAPE PORPOISE – Eleanore (Roberts) Jemison, 84, of Kennebunk, died April 13, 2006, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Sherman Spurr of Cape Porpoise.

She was born in Salem, Mass., on Sept. 11, 1921. She was the daughter of Menzia and Harriett (Sheehan) Roberts.

She was a devoted mother and wife who helped build the medical practice of former husband Howard A. Jemison Jr., M.D.

She was an invaluable asset for many years as office manager for her daughter and son-in-laws’ business in Massachusetts. She was an avid reader and

crossword enthusiast and loved antiques. She also, for many years, worked for various antique dealers in Essex, Mass., and for a period of time had her own shop called the Jemison Forge. She loved the ocean and taught her children and grandchildren how to find those special beach treasures.

She was pre-deceased by a grandson, Conan Jemison.

She is survived by one son, Howard A. Jemison III and wife Susie of Ariz.; son / nephew, John T. Roberts and wife Jerry of Massachusetts; 11 grandchildren, Kaci Jackson and husband Carlos of Connecticut, Erica Baltazar and husband Joseph of California, Eli Jemison of Oregon, Elizabeth Jemison-Ahamed and husband, Basheer of Florida, Branden Jemison of Arizona, Angela Butler and husband Shane of Arizona, Shawna McInelly and husband Kaylon of Arizona, Curtis Mitchell of Arizona, Stephen Mitchell of Arizona, Derek Spurr and wife Laura of Massachusetts, and Heather Spurr Kirwin and husband Tom of Massachusetts .

She was a great-grandmother of five, and because she predeceased her four siblings, she became the matriarch of her family and was adored by her nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.

She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.

Virginia Littlefield

SANFORD – Virginia “Ding” (Brown) Littlefield passed April 14, 2006, at the Newton Center in Sanford.

She was born in Waterville, June 23, 1920, a daughter of E. Stanley and Katherine (Adams) Brown. In 1921, they moved to Kennebunkport where she graduated from the high school in 1938. She graduated from Westbrook Junior College, (NEU) 1940, then attended Bates College. She married Maurice B. Littlefield April 15, 1943.

She was active in Girl Scouts, one of the last girls awarded the Eagle Scout Award and she participated for many years in all phases of Scouting. She was a member of Deering Chapter 39 OES and a 50 plus member; also holding chairs in other chapters. She was treasurer of both the M.F. Bragdon Paint Company (Bragdon’s) and Brafield Realty Company in the “Old Port” area on Exchange Street. She worked for some time as bookkeeper for the Minot Corporation which she found satisfying. She was active in PTA, Deering Band Mothers (sending the band to Kennedy’s inauguration), Dorothy Mason’s Dance School’s recitals, and Preble Lodge bean suppers. She was a super knitter, even to the level of making argyle socks and sweaters.

Surviving are her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, Maurice B. Littlefield of Sanford; three sons, John E. Littlefield of Delcano, N.J., Howard M. Littlefield of Cape Elizabeth, and Donald C. Littlefield of Scarborough; one daughter, Jane L. Frankland of Lyman; two sisters, Priscilla Martin and Jane Houston, both of Kennebunkport; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Tuesday at Bibber Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco.

Gerard Pepin

KENNEBUNK – Gerard J. Pepin, 83, a resident of Cat Mousam Road, Kennebunk, died the evening of April 10, 2006, at RiverRidge in Kenne-bunk after a brief illness.

He was born in St. Norbert, Canada, on Oct. 2, 1922, the son of Rudolph and Lydia (Voyer) Pepin.

He attended Sanford schools.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the 82nd Seabees.

He was a partner with his brother in R. Pepin and Sons Inc.

He was a member of St. Martha Church in Kennebunk.

He was predeceased by his wife Rita (Roger) Pepin in 2000, two brothers, Bertrand and Roger Pepin, and his sister, Carmen Dolbec.

He is survived by his three daughters, Irene Pepin of Kennebunk, Janet Perry of Dover, N.H., and Yvonne Stolp of Greer, S.C.; one brother, Sylvio Pepin, and two sisters, Marie Ange Caron and Gertrude Berthiaume, all of Sanford; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk. Interment was in St. Ignatius cemetery in Sanford.

Barrett Stevens

KENNEBUNK – Barrett Whitney Stevens, 98, a resident of Huntington Commons, Kennebunk, formerly of Wilton, Conn., died April 10, 2006, at his home after a long life.

He was born in Lexington, Mass., on May 21, 1907, a son of Ralph Leslie and Marie (Clarke) Stevens. He attended Ridgefield School and graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.

He served in the United States Army Air Force as Lieutenant Colonel in World War II.

He was employed by the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company in New York City for 30 years before retiring in 1972.

He was member of the Fly Club and Hasty Pudding at Harvard University, the Harvard Alumni Club, Ex Members of Squadron A, Rotary, the River Club of Kennebunkport, and a long-time member of the choir at St. David’s Episcopal.

He enjoyed painting watercolors, piano, playing tennis and reading.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Louise (Herrick) Stevens who died in 1996. She had been ordained as an Episcopal priest. Also his sister, Ruth Freeman and his brother, Alexander Stevens.

He is survived by his two sons, Alexander Whitney Stevens of Westport, Conn., and David Herrick Stevens of Oakton, Va.; one daughter, Leslie Clarke Stevens of Ahwahnee, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Benjamin and Harry Stevens of Westport, Conn., Sara, Alison, Taylor, and Margaret “Maggie” Stevens of Oakton, Va.

A memorial service will be held on June 17, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Route 1 south, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Beacon Hospice, 54B Atlantic Pl., South Portland, ME 04106, in his memory.

Lois Connelly

WELLS — Lois Ann Connelly, 75, of Hillside Street, died early morning on April 20, 2006, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born in Cambridge, Mass., on June 12, 1930, a daughter of Charles N. and Elizabeth (Blight) Young. She grew up in Belmont, and graduated from Belmont High School.

On July 4, 1953, she married Frederick W. Connelly after the two eloped to New Hampshire.

She was employed for more than 20 years as a repair woman for the telephone company. She enjoyed sewing and her computer. Along with her husband, she was a member of the Senior Club in Moody.

Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, of Wells; three sons, Frederick W. Connelly Jr., of Edgartown, Mass., Thomas M. Connelly of Littleton, Mass., Charles E. Connelly of Belmont, Mass.;

two daughters, Kathleen A. Connelly of Littleton, Mass., Jeanne M. Good of Cary, N.C.; one brother, Alan Young of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Donna Heaney of Acton, Mass.; and 12 grandchildren.

A funeral was held Monday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells. Burial followed in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.
